Toph leads the discussion and review of Fine Young Cannibals' 1989 album ‘The Raw & The Cooked' – including, as always, albums + songs on our radar and much more!   Stop the presses...we did two episodes in 8 days!  Which makes us proud as pie.  Tune in to hear the boys discuss the sweet sultry (I guess) voice of Roland Gift, provide the story of how this "spin off" band came about, and play the strangest game in the history of 2T&A.  Will this episode be raw? Will it be cooked? Will it be a Gift?  Will it be a good thing?  Will we drive you crazy? Will you be satisfied?  Or will you take what you can get?  Regardless -- don't look back, and give episode 92 a listen.  It's ok.  It's alright.

Où sont passées nos années 80 ? (Episode 2 : The Fine Young Cannibals)

RETRO RHLSTP #87 - I've Never Stabbed Anyone…Oh No, I Have. - A tired and possibly ill Richard Herring tries to get through another podcast without vomiting on his guest, the disaster-magnet that is Janey Godley. She talks candidly about marrying the son of a Glasgow gangster, her many family tragedies and how she survived them plus how Jerry Sadowitz was almost killed at one of his first gigs, what she'd like to do with Roland Gift, witnessing horrific accidents and heart-warming scenes from daily life. Plus the Bay City Rollers, Vesta curries, working with your daughter, performing in a prison and that wonderful moment when you forget that you've stabbed someone. Some truly incredible stories from this brilliantly funny, mildly terrifying, but ultimately rather lovely woman. In the second episode of Season 2, I'm delighted that we have Dave Randall with us as our special guest where we're talking about the mindset aspects of curiosity, identity, collaboration, the power of our instinct. For me, my chat with Dave highlights why living our life that aligns with what we value most is one of the most important paths we can take. Dave is a guitarist, producer, composer, author and social activist. Musically, he has worked with artists like Faithless, Sinead O'Connor, Dido, Emilíana Torrini, and Roland Gift and contributed to the 1 Giant Leap Project, featuring musicians from all around the world including  Neneh Cherry and Michael Stipe. His current collective is called Slovo with singer Barbarella and their latest album is called Bread & Butterflies. It expands previous collaborations with hip hop innovator Mike Ladd. And Barbarella is a truly remarkable vocalist, switching between loose Gwen Stefani like vocals and on Call Me, powerful, soaring opera. You can't put a genre on it and that's a good thing to my mind. We've been taught to compartmentalise too many things for too long.Dave is also the author of the excellent “Sound System: The Political Power of Music” – a fascinating read on the power of music for both protesters and agitators and for the ruling corporate and governmental classes. The paradox of protest and pacification.I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. There was no escaping the Fine Young Cannibals and their chart-topping album, The Raw and the Cooked, in 1989 and 1990. Combining new wave, techno, and soul sounds, the album was #1 for seven consecutive weeks during the summer of 1989, and their lead singer, Roland Gift, graced the cover of Rolling Stone, was named one of People's 50 Most Beautiful People, and had a golden voice that drew comparisons to Al Green, Sam Cooke, and Mick Jagger.  And while their success was short-lived (The Raw and the Cooked was the group's second and final studio album), their music left an indelible impression on pop music and on Chris and Jon. Listen as the two take a look back on this vital and hugely successful 1989 album, as well as their shared affinity for peanut butter sauce.

In this edition, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, we decided to give you the opportunity to watch our selected episode of Pops along with us (providing you keep a finger on the pause button, as we're over five times longer). It's just come out on BBC4, giving you an invaluable opportunity to tut to yourself and say; "God, they didn't even mention that Richard Skinner keeps saying "It's the way you tell them" to Simon Bates, the thick twats." Yes, we're smack in the middle of the Eighties, and a mere nine days away from Live Aid - and no-one realises yet what a massive fault-line it's going to create in Popland, when the dinosaurs come marching back and cram everything around them into their gaping maws. Least of all us, as we're too busy skulking around in a post sixth-form haze, sitting through a Saturday detention due to Tipp-Ex-related obscenities, and pitching a Pants Tent to George Michael in Barry Island Butlins.  Musicwise, however, this episode veers all over the shop, from Pete Burns taking the last stand for Pop Weirdness to Tears For Fears poncing about in Montreux to Paul Weller in his Pants to Oompah Reggae to Mick Hucknall annoying people trying to play pool to Roland Gift singing like he's got a hot bit of potato in his mouth to Ian Astbury dressing up like someone who reads palms in a caravan off Blackpool Pier. It's actually better than expected, although the No.1 is depressingly rammel. And as luck would have it, one of us - who was a Hip Young Cockleslinger at the Barry and District Times - has pulled out his scrapbook and treats us to his original reviews.  Neil Kulkarni and Simon Price join Al Needham for a solid pick at the scab of 1985, veering off on the usual tangents, which include having to go to school with the Topless Lovelies, the correct procedures of cock-drawing, trying to dress like Paul Weller and ending up looking like Eric Morecombe, Quincy Punks, and the Treacherous Steph of Basingstoke. Naturally, swearing is deployed. Often. Mix) - Red Flag 15. 1963 - New Order     Notes and other random things: Believe it or not, I get a lot of great email from listeners, so before I get to the music, let's dig into the CRC mailbag:   Dear DJ Tintin, You're always busy with your pod-thingy. What, you too much of a big shot to call anymore? Signed, Mom.   Heh...sorry, mom. Just trying to give people their fill of good retro music. I'll call you next week. I promise. Okay, that's it for the mailbag this week.     As for the music, most of this episode is rather upbeat and fun with one glaring exception: 1963 by New Order. Regular listeners will notice that New Order turns up a lot in these podcasts, yet I've never really devoted much time to writing much about them. I don't know why that is, exactly. After all, they're one of my favorite bands of all time, so you'd figure I'd give them a ton of column inches in my write-ups. But, everything about the band has always been understated, from their lyrics, to their cover art, and even to their significance in music history. In a weird way, I suppose, my omissions might be a greater sign of respect for a group that managed for so long to conceal itself. I mean, they weren't much for interviews and their liner notes rarely revealed anything about the members. Heck, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris were sort of unwilling rock stars anyway, their new band coming about after the dissolution of Joy Division and the death of former band mate and lead singer Ian Curtis. There was some serious discussion as to whether or not they wanted to continue as a band after the tragedy. Thankfully, they did continue on. They overcame early criticisms of being a Joy Division sound-alike and eventually developed their own sound, creating some of the most memorable dance music from the 80s. Blue Monday, for instance, is still the top-selling 12" dance mix of all time. (Check out CRC #19 to hear the song.) As for 1963, there is disagreement about its meaning. A superficial listen to the lyrics reveals a grim scenario whereby a man murders his lover and takes on another. The song is a recap of the failed relationship and seems to be sung from the perspective of the deceased. When taken into account with the date, 1963, however, the song, depending on what you believe, takes on a deeper significance. While much of New Order's music is left for open interpretation, as the band has said, it has also been said that lead singer Bernard Sumner wrote the song about the death of John F. Kennedy. According to some, Sumner had a theory that surmised JFK hired a hitman to kill Jackie so that he could be with Marilyn Monroe. History turned out differently and the bullets found a different target. So distraught was Monroe, she killed herself. The song, therefore, is sung from Jackie's perspective, begging John to spare her life. It's an interesting theory, but history will also show that Monroe died a year before Kennedy. Some have suggested the song refers to a soldier taking on another wife while fighting overseas and killing his domestic lover out of necessity or perhaps guilt. Some have suggested “Johnny” is a reference to Bernard's adoptive father John Dicken. Whatever the case, it's admittedly a sort of a down way to end a podcast lyrically, though the song's producer, Stephen Hague, has pointed out that it's the only song about domestic violence you can dance to. I'll hang my hat on that statement. New Song by Howard Jones is the first appearance for HoJo on CRC. With few exceptions, his music was always positive, but when you’re a self-described optimist that glove would seem to fit. Listen closely and see if you don’t find similarities between this song and Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel. While it’s long gone now, Jones' distinctive Mohawk hairdo was quite the spectacle back in the day. They were one-hit wonders in the U.S. with their 1987 hit Living in a Box, but the band of the same name had a second album that did quite well in Sheffield, England, their place of origin. The song Blow the House Down from the 1989 release Gatecrashing included Queen’s Brian May on guitar. This particular song is from their eponymous debut.   After Living in a Box, the podcast took an odd house-y kind of turn. Pablo has a dub feel and comes from Beloved’s remix album called Blissed Out. I’ve Been Thinking About You is the 12” version of the #1 tune by Londonbeat from 1991. The original appeared on their second full-length release called In the Blood. The first time I heard this tune, I thought it was Roland Gift and the boys from Fine Young Cannibals. A reasonable mistake, but a mistake no less. Ride the Bullet is the b-side of Crucified, probably the best-known hit from Army of Lovers. They always reminded me of Dead or Alive with Victorian-era costumes instead of drab-looking gothic clothes. This particular track was remixed by DNA, who has done many remix projects including the classic version of Tom’s Diner by Suzanne Vega (CRC #9) I Say Yeah is an awesome dance track by Italo-Disco producer Stefano Secchi. This particular song is the Razormaid! remix of the track and features vocals by Orlando Johnson. React 2 Rhythm grew out of the West London dance scene. The song here, Intoxication, was the second major release from the group, having signed initially to legendary producer William Orbit’s Guerilla Records imprint. This particular mix, the Dubfield Mix, was one of two by techno outfit Leftfield. The other was called the Clubfield Mix. At least half a dozen others remixed this track including pre-eminent 80s remixer Justin Robertson and John Digweed. Underworld has appeared on CRC before with their track Skyscraper I Love You (CRC #17). Here they return with the album version of Dirty Epic from the same dubnobasswithmyheadman CD. It’s hard to believe the transformation these guys have gone through over the years and maybe even harder to believe Karl Hyde and Rick Smith have been making music together for over 30 years. Though they haven’t yet been on CRC, their early ‘80s outfit Freuer will make an appearance at some point in time. Finally, there’s the Camouflage track X-ray. This version was taken from their limited, 2-disc, numbered best of collection called Rewind. In case you were wondering, I own pressing #3502. As the band puts it, they “liked the aura of the letters forming this word.” Before shooting the video, they wanted to watch the film The Man with the X-ray Eyes. The main character in the film is named Ray Milland. Because it took them ages to find a copy of the film they had watched as children, they eventually named the bonus track of the X-ray single In Search of Ray Milland. Bet you didn’t know that! Seems like these write-ups keep getting longer and longer every new episode. I’ll have to work on shortening them. I just don’t want to gyp any of the bands out of their due glory, though I may have to concentrate on the songs that have really neat stories behind them in the future. I don’t know. We’ll see, I guess. That’s all for this episode. I’ll be back again soon with more mail from the mailbag and some more groovy retro tunes. Until then…be good, everyone. By the way, the image associated with this episode is Half Face with Collar by Roy Lichtenstein. It is significant not only for the high price it was supposed to fetch at auction (and didn’t), but for the fact it was completed in…you guessed it…1963. You also might notice the cover art isn't flowing with my standard BPM Editions, however these wallpapers I grabbed from Out & About Las Vegas were just too perfect to not use.  You'll find that there is a storyline.  First, he (hottie in the picture) gets ready for the evening.  The second cover will be him meeting someone and the third, well I'm pretty sure you can guess what happens.  Don't worry mom and dad, it's PG-13 and pretty darn clever if you ask me. Kicking things into gear, Timbaland and Justin work out the Carry Out.  Considering I wasn't feeling the last two Timbaland singles with Justin and another with Nelly, I think it's the kick-ass Chew Fu remix that makes this song.  Keeping the energy tight is Elevated, the latest featuring the I'm Your Goddess, Tara McDonald.  The Morgan Page remix of Fantasy by Nadi Ali is a progressive workout that stands equal to the trance version I featured a while back. Daruso has been riding high with Since You Been Gone, so I took on the Buzz Junkies production, which was the least commercial of the bunch.  This is followed by some serious Miami house and great vocals before tempering down a bit with a classic remake,  Do For Love, a rework of the old Bobby Caldwell Top 40 hit What You Won't Do For Love from 1979.  This is one of my top ten all-time favorite songs, so I was definitely interested to see what Vinny and Jaidene did with it.  Out of all the mixes that accompanied the track, Dave Aude won hands down.  Instead of trying to make it into some big electro number, Dave takes us down the road of smooth and easy progressive without going all over the place.  If there were ever a nice update of this song 30 years later, this would be it. In keeping with the momentum, The Temper Trap deliver their latest Love Lost.  I have to admit I am blown away by this song.  The soulful vocals sound very much like Roland Gift of Fine Young Cannibals fame.  While this isn't going to light up any dance floors, the Rollo & Sister Bliss mix is perfect for poolside parties. Another fabulous summer song, I've been all over lately is Mark Picchiotti and Sun Drae's Let the Music Guide You.  This is absolutely beautiful and perfect for summer.  Expect a funkier version to make an appearance on the upcoming Beach House 2010. I realize many of you may be scratching your heads about what's next, but you gotta give Enrique his due.  Since he crossed over in 1999, he's done a fantastic job of keeping his ears on the floor, the dance floor that is.  All of his songs are accompanied by amazing remixes by some of the top talents of the moment.  In this case, Avicii has been ultra hot lately, with his big room progressive productions.  That's why I also paired I Like It with Rhythm Master's I Feel Love.  It seems to me I had a remake of this Donna Summer classic sung by a guy last year, but I can't find it.  That version was a dead-on turn of the original.  This version, however, does a complete 360 from the original by dropping the familiar pulsating synth originally performed by Giorgio Moroder.  I'm a huge fan of Donna and the original, but I am equally impressed with this whole new perspective of a classic disco song. For the GaGa monsters, I added one of the three Monster mixes that I showcased in my recent G-Spot.  DJ Oskar does a kick-ass progressive mash-up that fits the song so perfectly, as well as this set,

Shock World Service 001: The Clocks Were Striking Thirteen by Jon Averill 22/01/07 Dublin, Ireland 1. I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - According To Plan Strange that I chosen a goth rock/post-punk revival track for the very first track on the first ever podcast, but I have. 2. Robots In Disguise - DJs Got A Gun Pretty awful track that hasn't aged all that well to be honest but hey, it was 2007. 3. 23 Skidoo - Last Words Perhaps the first bit of decent music on the Shock World Service. ‘Last Words' is a jam off 23 Skidoo's album ‘The Gospel Comes To New Guinea' from 1981. 4. The Flying Lizards - Sex Machine An experimental duo that surprisingly had some main stream chart success in the early 80s with their strange but brilliant cover versions. 5. The English Beat - Mirror In The Bathroom Formerly 'The Beat', a 2 Tone ska revival band founded in Birmingham in the late 70s. After the Beat split up Andy Cox & David Steele joined up with vocalist Roland Gift to form Fine Young Cannibals. When Fine Young Cannibals split up Roland Gift appeared in some episodes of the Highlander TV show. What a career. 6. The Psychonauts - Hips For Scotland I'd always thought of The Psychonauts as part of the big beat scene of the late 90s, but they were actually a far more interesting act than that. Psychedelic folk of the quality of ‘Hips For Scotland' requires no further exegesis. 7. Mr Hopkin's Crazy Computer - Crazy Mr Hopkin's computer is unlikely to be actually crazy but I enjoyed this cover of the Gnarls Barkley omnipresent radio hit. 8. Roxy Music - The Main Thing (Rub'n'Tug Mix) At the time of recording this podcast i'd never listened to Roxy Music. 8 years later I have. 9. In Flagranti - What Are You Doing After The Orgy? More a loop than a track from New York based Sasha Crnobrnja & Alex Gloor. From the time we had Sasha DJ for us we can tell you he's a fan of art, high quality porn & Gaelic football. 10. Common - New Wave (Playgroup Remix) Trevor Jackson's remix of Common drops his vocal over the Tom Tom Club's ‘Wordy Rappinghood'. Simple & effective. 11. Vincent Price - Extract from Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Raven' I could contentedly listen to Vincent Price recite the phonebook but luckily for us this is an extract from one of Poe's finest. 12. Jóhann Jóhannsson, Gudmundur Kristmundsson - Odi et Amo This vocals on this beautiful piece of nordic music feel like a kindred spirit of Mr Hopkin's Crazy Computer. The track also feels like the end of something – luckily it's also the end of our first ever podcast. Please note there will be no refunds at this point.
