In this episode, Toni sits down with Amanda Smith, a functional canine nutritionist and founder of Canine Gut Solutions, to talk about the connection between gut health, nutrition, and chronic health issues in dogs. Amanda shares her journey from a 20-year career in veterinary medicine to becoming a nutrition consultant after her own French Bulldog was diagnosed with pancreatitis, leading her to question conventional feeding recommendations and explore a more holistic approach. Amanda explains why so many dogs struggling with issues like chronic itching, digestive problems, and inflammation may need more than symptom management. She discusses the importance of fresh food, gut health testing, food and environmental sensitivities, and how understanding what's happening inside the body can help pet parents make more informed decisions instead of relying on trial and error. The conversation also explores pet parent advocacy, asking questions, and building confidence when navigating veterinary care. Toni and Amanda encourage listeners to think critically, seek education, and remember that improving a dog's health doesn't have to be overwhelming. It's an insightful discussion packed with practical advice for anyone looking to better understand the role nutrition plays in their dog's overall well-being.
A broken heart is never just emotional—it can become deeply physical. Nurse practitioner Jessica Love shares her powerful journey from ICU nurse to patient after experiencing stress-induced cardiomyopathy, also known as "broken heart syndrome," during her clinical training. What began as subtle symptoms of fatigue and chest pressure quickly escalated into a life-threatening cardiac event, reshaping everything she thought she knew about stress, health, and healing. Her recovery became a turning point, shifting her focus from treating disease in the ICU to preventing it through whole-person care. In this conversation with Dr. Michelle Robin and Bayleigh Soza, Jessica explores how chronic stress impacts the heart, why women's symptoms are often missed, and how nervous system regulation, awareness, and daily habits can transform long-term heart health. Key Takeaways: Broken heart syndrome can occur unexpectedly when chronic or emotional stress overwhelms the body, even in young and healthy individuals. Stress often shows up physically before it is emotionally recognized, with symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, and reduced energy. The heart and nervous system are deeply connected, meaning emotional regulation directly influences cardiovascular health and resilience. Women's heart symptoms are frequently subtle and can be overlooked, making awareness of early warning signs especially important. Daily practices like gratitude, movement, sleep, nutrition, and nervous system regulation can significantly support long-term heart health and prevention. Jessica blends conventional medicine with functional and lifestyle-based approaches to support long-term health and wellness. Her education and clinical experience allow her to support patients through personalized strategies including nutrition, movement, and lifestyle interventions. Many people cannot resist short-nosed dog breeds because they are cute, loving, loyal, and even portable. However, they require a high level of maintenance if they are to live long and healthy lives. Janet King and Dr. Alice Jeromin are joined by Dr. Liesl Bigge, a small animal internal medicine specialist, to discuss how to properly take care of French Bulldogs, Pugs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and all types of brachycephalic dogs. From addressing their breathing issues to treating their gastrointestinal problems, they present the best practices to keep them healthy and active if you own or are planning to adopt one. Dr. Bigge also discusses the true costs of having short-nosed dog breeds and why you need insurance coverage from day one.◇ ─ ◇ ─ ◇Froggy's Golf Ball Retrieval offers the best programs helping you achieve the most from your water hazards. Since 2008, Chicago French Bulldog Rescue (CFBR) has been saving Frenchies from dire abuse and neglect situations--some even facing euthanasia. Mychelle Peterson got involved with CFBR as a donor in 2012 and later became a volunteer. "They have very high medical costs. They have a lot of medical concerns and a lot of people purchase the dogs or adopt the dogs without full understanding of a lifetime of care. What our founder, Mary, saw was a real need for not only rehabilitation and medical support when these dogs need to be either needed to be rehomed or go into palliative care, hospice care. Chicago, French Bulldog Rescue is committed to the long-term care of these dogs. Sometimes they are not able to be adopted and they become forever fosters," she explains. Peterson is now part of CFBR's social media team, and she says there is so much good and bad when it comes to social media. "It's brought tremendous awareness to what wonderful dogs they really are. The downside is people see dollar signs, and so we have irresponsible breeders. We have unethical breeders who are trying to bring about unique colors and markings, and those are all coming with the cost, and the cost of being paid by the dogs. It's recessive genes. It's inbreeding. It's so many different things," she explains. So far, CFBR has rescued more than 400 Frenchies, placing the majority in loving homes--including Izzy, who Peterson adopted in 2022. "The reason we have Izzy is because her breeder who wanted to charge $7000 for her, decided a $100 series of shots was not worth the investment, so she and her brother contracted parvo which is a treatable, but deadly virus, and they were going to be euthanized," she recalls. Fortunately, the vet contacted CFBR and the organization covered all the medical bills as they have for so many other Frenchies. Peterson says in 2025, medical cost exceeded $200,000 for the first time in the organizations history, and all that money comes from donations so every little bit helps. "$5 makes a difference. We are talking about the life and death of these dogs," says Peterson who hopes more people with get involved with CFBR via their upcoming Pupchella fundraiser on May 16th at Rizzo's in Wrigleyville, but she adds there are other ways to help. "Sharing a social media post, engaging with her contact gets a notice by other people. If you don't have, the financial means to be a donor, volunteer. We need volunteers. We are nothing but our donors and volunteers," says a grateful Peterson. Chicago French Bulldog Rescue, a Difference Maker.

Happy Thursday, my darling pop culture junkies! We are back with another episode of Pop Culture Mondays on Thursdays, and honestly? The vibes are shifting. From a major mascot overhaul to some of the wildest viral news we've seen all year, we are diving deep into the zeitgeist today. Inside This Episode: • The Passing of the Torch: Out with the old, in with the... wrinkly. We discuss why Potato the French Bulldog is officially replacing Baby Yoda as the Pop Culture Mondays mascot. • The Project Hail Mary Phenomenon: It's more than just a hit movie; it's a fashion movement. We're breaking down the film's success and why everyone is obsessed with Ryan Gosling's sweater (and how to get the look). • The Great Kit Kat Heist: Someone has a serious sweet tooth. We look into the baffling disappearance of 435,000 Kit Kat bars. Where did they go? Why? And how do you even hide that much chocolate? • Debunking the Great Escape: You've seen the video of the dogs "escaping" in China. We set the record straight—the footage is real, but the narrative you're reading in the captions is pure fiction. • The No Kings March: Breaking down the cultural impact and the noise surrounding the latest movement hitting the streets. • Druski's Latest Controversy: We're talking about Druski's whiteface impression of Erika Kirk. Was it satire or did it cross the line? The internet is divided, we want your thoughts. This week's PCM: https://popculturemondays.com/2026/03/30/holy-hail-mary/

The French Bulldog has been the most popular breed in the United States four years in a row. It also can't breathe the way other dogs breathe, can't reproduce without surgery, and can't swim. None of that is in the Instagram caption. In this episode, Coach Francis traces the Frenchie from a Nottingham lace factory through a Parisian brothel to the most copied dog face on the internet — and explains what it actually means to own the world's most misunderstood animal. We go from Gamin de Pycombe — a champion French Bulldog who went down with the Titanic in 1912, insured for the equivalent of $17,000 today — through near-extinction in 1940, a viral comeback, and four consecutive years at #1 on the AKC's most popular breed list. And then we talk about what we actually built. The flat face, the compromised airway, the C-sections, the spinal deformities, the heat risk. The real cost of owning this dog — financially, physically, and ethically. This is not an episode against the French Bulldog. It's an episode for the owners who want to do right by one.

Fenbendazole Side Effects in Dogs: What Breeders Need to Know About Rare ReactionsFenbendazole (Panacur) has been a go-to dewormer for veterinarians and breeders for over 40 years — but a rare, life-threatening blood disorder in a 10-month-old French Bulldog is prompting a closer look. Dr. Marty Greer joins host Laura Reeves to share what happened, what it means, and why being an informed consumer of veterinary drugs matters more than ever.Marty shares her experience with a young French Bulldog who developed severe pancytopenia — dangerously low white blood cells, platelets near zero, and declining red blood cells — after a 10-day course of fenbendazole for Giardia. In this episode, Marty and Laura cover:Idiosyncratic vs. idiopathic reactions— what the difference means and why it matters when a drug you trust causes an unexpected responseThe fenbendazole case— a detailed walkthrough of diagnosis, the ruling-out process (parvo, tick-borne disease, vaccines, other drugs), and the treatment that turned it around within 24 hoursThe FDA Dear Veterinarian letter— as of April 2024, pancytopenia had been reported in 12 dogs on fenbendazole; this case may make 13How to report adverse drug reactions— and why that reporting matters for future label updatesMDR-1 gene mutations— which breeds are affected and what drugs to watchTrimethoprim-sulfa (Bactrim/Albon)— breeds at higher risk for platelet drops, including Samoyeds, Dobermans, Goldens and BorzoiTopical flea/tick products— the "heebie-jeebies" skin sensation and what to do if your dog reacts every monthReading package inserts— a practical tip: search for the drug name + "package insert PDF" and use Ctrl+F to find terms like "pregnant," "breeding," or "male"Key takeaway: Fenbendazole remains a safe, widely used drug — but as with any medication, idiosyncratic reactions can happen. Send a textA working dog powers through a hot training session, then stops. The clock is ticking, because core temperature can keep climbing even after the effort ends. We sit down with JAVMA student award winner Sarah Parnes to unpack a simple, field-ready strategy that changes outcomes: cool first, transport second. Using the gear most of us carry—a water bottle, a towel, a small cooler—Sara's team tested multiple methods outdoors to mirror real-world conditions. One approach stood out: a voluntary head dunk that quickly blunted the post-exercise temperature rise while other techniques only reduced heat more slowly. We dig into why the head matters for thermoregulation, how targeted cooling may protect the brain and calm the system, and what owners can do when water is limited. If a dog won't dunk, pouring water over the head or using a wet towel still helps, but the dunk delivered the strongest effect. We also break down the early signs of heat stress that many people miss: ears pulled back, a long curled tongue, squinting eyes, shade seeking, and sudden reluctance to move. For brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs and Pugs, we share prevention tactics that reduce risk on hot days, from timing exercise to creating shade and ensuring fresh water.Sarah also opens up about the research journey, from designing realistic protocols to exploring unanswered questions—like how post-exercise drinking during a dunk may influence cooling, and what head-focused alternatives work for dogs that avoid submersion. Whether you handle working dogs or walk a weekend warrior, you'll leave with practical tools to act fast and smart when the temperature spikes. If this conversation helps you or your dog community, subscribe, share the episode, and leave a quick review so more listeners can find these life-saving tips.JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.24.06.0368INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ® OR AJVR ® ? In this episode of Talking Away the Taboo, Dr. Baron is joined again by Pam Krooth as they pick up right where their first conversation ended, the moment Pam received the call about a little boy available for adoption. Pam shares her experience adopting her son, David, from Ethiopia, including the emotional weight of the legal process, the heartbreak of separation during visa delays, and the realities of bringing a young child into a new country, culture, and family. She reflects on the importance of ethical adoption practices, thorough preparation, and honest self-assessment before choosing this path. The conversation also explores raising a child of color in a Jewish family, navigating dual racial and cultural identities, and why love alone isn't enough without intentional representation and open, ongoing dialogue. Pam emphasizes respecting a child's timeline, avoiding secrecy in adoption, and creating space for age-appropriate conversations about identity and origins. This episode offers an honest look at what adoption truly asks of parents, and how openness, humility, and care help build trust over time. Like so many, Pam Krooth, LCSW, spent years trying not to get pregnant, only to find herself aching for the thing she once assumed would come easily. What followed was a long, emotional road marked by pain, heartbreak, and the slow, painful shift between expectation and reality. Throughout Pam's story, we see how the path to the family she hoped for looked nothing like what she once imagined, and how hard it was when the timing was out of her control. After infertility, postpartum depression, and a miraculous adoption, she found her way to a different kind of motherhood, which reminds us to stay open to the many ways a family can be created, because the unexpected path can sometimes lead somewhere even more beautiful. This raw, honest conversation reminds us that there isn't one way to become a parent, and that every path, however unexpected, is miraculous. Send us a textWe sit down with Drs. Paul Freeman and Nick Jeffery to discuss a treatment for down dogs that's changing outcomes and conversations: percutaneous intradiscal chondroitinase injections that act like chemical fenestration, reduce extruded disc material, and help non-ambulatory dogs recover without opening the spine. We walk through the origin of the idea, the ethical hurdles, and the growing dataset behind safety and effectiveness. You'll hear why deep pain–positive dogs with acute disc injuries often do as well with enzyme injections as with decompressive surgery, and how careful case selection can minimize risk. We get practical about inclusion criteria—currently focused on dogs under 15 kg, with French Bulldogs now included under close monitoring—and the technical realities of needle placement, imaging guidance, and when to add MRI. We also dig into the strategy of treating three to five disc levels to lower recurrence, and why this multi-level approach could outperform single-site surgery over the long term. The conversation doesn't dodge the hard calls. We compare large compressive lesions versus primarily contusive injuries, discuss when early surgery still makes sense, and share early experiences expanding to cervical cases with ultrasound and fluoroscopic checks. Looking ahead, we explore research priorities: defining time windows for chronic presentations, tracking recurrence across breeds, and building the evidence to place chondroitinase correctly in the treatment pathway. We even touch on how AI could one day use imaging data to predict which dogs need urgent decompression and which can safely recover with enzyme-first care.If you're an ER vet, GP, or neurologist looking to offer owners real choices, this is a grounded, data-informed guide to a less invasive option that can preserve mobility and reduce euthanasia driven by cost. Listen, share with your team, and help more “down dogs” stand again. In this installment of RRP Trainer Chronicles, an OTTB on Tap Original Series, we catch up with returning trainer Chelsey O'Brien as her 2025 RRP Makeover journey takes shape. This year, Chelsey is retraining two very different OTTBs—each with their own story and style.✨ Peppy (JC name: The Pepsodent Show) has stepped into the hunter ring, showing the elegance Thoroughbreds can bring to the discipline. She also takes us behind the scenes at the Virginia Thoroughbred Association Yearling Futurity, where she proudly presented homebred colts and fillies just a year after foaling them out. With her philosophy of striving to be 1% better every day, and her belief that training is an art form, Chelsey shares one of her go-to OTTB training tips that listeners can put into practice. If you love stories of OTTB versatility, retraining insights, and the heart behind the Retired Racehorse Project Makeover, this episode is a must-listen.
