Send us a textWhat if the key to transformative coaching isn't about adding climate awareness to your practice, but recognizing it's already there? Climate biodiversity coach Lydia Stevens and regenerative leadership coach Grattan Donnelly challenge us to look "upstream" beyond immediate client concerns to the interconnected living systems that shape all human experience.The powerful metaphor they share illuminates why this matters: villagers downstream rescue bodies floating in a river but rarely venture upstream to discover why people are falling in. Similarly, coaching that ignores ecological context addresses symptoms rather than root causes. "Business as usual is downstream," explains Donnelly. "Until we start thinking about what kind of world we really want to live in."This expanded awareness doesn't require changing client agendas. Stevens points out that climate consciousness isn't something "outside" coaching—it's embedded in everyday life. The framework they share expands traditional coaching domains (self, team, organization) to include land, workspace, wider ecosystems, and biosphere, recognizing that all human activities exist within living systems.Their methodology often involves nature itself. Donnelly conducts sessions as outdoor "walk and talks," letting nature serve as co-coach. This practice activates the calming parasympathetic nervous system, allowing clients to literally see challenges from new perspectives. "When I slow down, I see twice as much," he notes. This integration of "head, heart, gut, and earth" creates conditions for profound mindset shifts without forcing climate topics.At its core, climate-conscious coaching recognizes what Donnelly calls the false "story of separation" between humans and nature: "We're not a part of nature, we're not apart from nature. We are nature." Christiana Figueres (the woman behind the Paris Agreement) is possibly the best-known official in the global climate change movement. The former Costa Rican diplomat and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (2010-2016), managed to bring together 195 nations to sign the historical 2015 agreement that set the “1.5C” target/warning. She wrote The Future We Choose, cohosts the Outrage + Optimism podcast, has a moth, a wasp and an orchid named after her, and has won countless international awards for her work. In this episode, we challenge each other on whether hope and optimism are still useful given we've passed the 1.5C threshold in February, whether the Paris Agreement is still viable almost 10 years on and the viability of the green energy transition. We don't agree on a number of points, but we come together on what keeps us in the “fight” …love. This international team of researchers and this team working out of France show fossil fuels will become net-energy negative in the future. We are spending more energy to get less energy than before—our net energy is “plummeting”.The world's consumption of fossil fuels climbed to a record high last year according to the University of Exeter's Global Carbon Project and NASA. Ellen is spearheading the integration of Mastercard's Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy into the organization. As part of this work, she is driving climate leadership for Mastercard-wide programs and commitments, such as reaching net-zero emissions by 2040, and helping accelerate the company's impact in climate action initiatives like Priceless Planet Coalition. Mastercard's ESG efforts, established more than a decade ago, are rooted in a belief of doing well by doing good in order to have true impact and enable both people and the planet to thrive. Previously, Ellen served as Chief Impact Officer and Head of Sustainable Impact at HP. Her global team developed and delivered a wide range of programs focused on climate action, human rights and digital equity. Earlier in her career, she served in several management and consulting roles. Ellen is part of the advisory board of the Ocean Plastics Leadership Network, is a deputy advisor on the World Economic Forum's Champions for Nature community and has served as a faculty member of The Prince of Wales's Business & Sustainability Programme at the University of Cambridge. The way I think about sustainability jobs now, every job is a sustainability job. Some people may have heard that before, but I truly believe that, especially as we're working across all the different areas of MasterCard to innovate in this space. I need marketing professionals to help us inspire more sustainable consumption in the messaging that they're creating and in the partnerships and the sponsorships that they're funding. I need engineering to be thinking about how energy efficient is the code they're creating, they need to be on board with this as well. I need our technology team to ensure that when we're expanding our data centers, they're choosing the most sustainable servers and partners who can help us innovate and achieve net zero. So no matter what role you're in, there really is a sustainability impact and an angle to that job. I just encourage people to think about what they can do to raise the bar to make more aggressive progress in this space. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? We're just seeing such a shift. There's never been so much positive energy in terms of tackling the climate crisis and it's coming from all different areas. The next generation is certainly being more vocal than ever before. I'm seeing innovation and inspiration come from different colleagues where maybe you didn't hear it so much in the past, but now, everybody wants to be on the sustainability team and they're bringing real ideas and solutions and innovation. I just feel like the energy that is focused on this issue right now is stronger than ever before, and I think that's really exciting. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read? I tend to be more of a podcaster or a newspaper reader, so I'm going to choose a book that's based on my favorite podcast, Outrage and Optimism. The book is The Future We Choose by Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? I mentioned Outrage and Optimism, that podcast, if you haven't listened to it, I think it's a fantastic resource. Project Drawdown continues to bring incredible tools as well to this space. In terms of staying on top of the latest news, the climate forward section of the New York Times I find is very valuable. The Guardian also reports quite a bit in this space. Since Dr Stephan Harding passed away in September 2024, he has been deeply mourned by the climate community,  many of whom have been touched and inspired by his life and work. In honour of his extraordinary contributions to our understanding of this beautiful planet, we're re-releasing the Deep Time Walk, narrated by Stephan, and which has already been downloaded over a million times. This re-release includes an introduction by hosts Paul and Tom, and Tom's eulogy, which he shared at Stephan's memorial service on 30th September. Stephan Harding was a founding member of Schumacher College where he was a Deep Ecology Research Fellow, celebrated teacher and author. As a celebration of this remarkable and beloved man, we hope you enjoy his history of Gaia, told through immersive sound. We encourage you to set aside time to sit comfortably, relax, and learn to “walk well into the life of Gaia” as Stephan puts it. Stephan has had a massive influence on the climate movement, inspiring global leaders to shift their world view towards a Gaian view. If you're hopeless you don't exercise what agency you might have.”41:25 Jimi - “What does poverty mean to you when you hear that word? … Poverty has more components to it than economics. . .”  … It took men a long time to realize that they were acting exactly as they should. You know, I thought I could come down and offer some pointers… And that's NOT what they needed. They needed somebody to come along and say, I understand your attitude. I get why you see the world the way you do... there's not a lot of good options on your horizon, you don't see a way out of this.”44:40 Scott: "Your comment about those who are economically wealthy, but spiritually-impoverished is important... We come in many ways impoverished as well.”FUTURE WE CHOOSE46:20 Chris, "Biospherically, the system is designed to renew; we're just sitting on top of potential all the time." 48:20 Scott, “First we saw a vicious cycle between environmental degradation and the impoverishment of their farms… We had a vicious cycle, what I learned from them is there is a possibility in that of creating a virtuous cycle, and actually a win-win…  We often look at human need and environmental issues as a zero sum game... and I think there's tremendous potential if we: 1) seek out the win win, 2) approach everything from a spirit of abundance rather than scarcity, 3) partner with those we serve... “Probably the greatest untapped resource in the world (is subsistence farmers), they have so much to offer, so much creativity, and THEY'RE THE ONES who planted 61 million trees, not us! ... Can we alter the course of climate change? One woman who can answer with authority is the internationally recognised leader on global climate change, Christiana Figueres. An absolutely remarkable woman, Ms Figueres was formerly the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Demonstrating immense diplomacy, resilience and determination, she successfully orchestrated negotiations with 196 countries to reach the historical Paris Agreement of 2015. Now hugely decorated, she is the co-founder of an organisation called Global Optimism, co-host of the podcast “Outrage & Optimism” and the co-author of the recently published book, “The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis".As the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) approaches next week, Ms. Figueres sits down with Annie to explain where the world is right now - what has been agreed, what needs to be done and importantly, what YOU can do. And moving away from the idea of right or wrong, and towards the idea of alignment.Finding purpose, joy, and curiosity, in a sustainable creative practice.Building a sustainable business that enables you, your creative practice and the planet to thrive.Here are some highlights:Why the word rewild?“There is a sense that we all ought to do things certain ways, there is an element of duty, there's an element of guilt around environmentalism. But there's also just this sense of being in a box, of how one ought to behave, how one ought to run a small business, run a creative practice. The meaning of rewild that I love is about breaking free of all of that, letting go of that social conditioning and stepping into your full power, as an environmentalist, as a designer maker. So ‘rewild your creative practice' is the kind of call to action, I guess. And then the benefit of doing that is that you, your business, and the planet all get to thrive.” It's not YOUR fault“Climate crisis is not your fault. It's not, 71% Of all the carbon released into the atmosphere, since the Industrial Revolution, has been emitted by just 100 companies. Countless governments have had the chance to solve this issue, probably before you were even born. And there are billionaires mass producing crap, and sending rockets to Mars. So none of this is your fault. It's just not. So you can let go of that guilt. And you know why that's important, because guilt is not the soil in which creativity thrives. We need creative people to solve this problem.“ Regeneration, it's not just for the planetAre you taking resources from yourself without replenishing them? We need to build creative practices that regenerate and nourish us as humans, that fill our cup that feed our soul, give us energy. If they're just draining us and exhausting us and taking from us that's not sustainable. It's also not good for the planet because if you're trying to create a planet positive, creative practice, and you burn out, the benefit that you're having is no longer being delivered. We need multitudes of bodhisattvas, of those who are selfless, those who know how to see the benefit of others as their own benefits, the well-being of the planet as their well-being.'” “Even though what is being shared is so painful, instead of drowning and being overwhelmed by the sorrow, my breathing becomes my foundation. I’m still present with the suffering, but I can guide the suffering. And this inner work, we believe [it] is so necessary for everyone today, because what we are facing will bring up a lot of emotions and feelings and even a sense of despair. And we all need a place of refuge and we need communities. I truly believe that community is the way forward; we cannot do it by ourselves. There’s no superman that can change the situation. We really need a collective movement, a collective awakening, a collective practice.” “It would be very easy to say, ‘I’ve spent ten years following my spiritual pursuits and 15 years working in the climate movement. Now I want to integrate them, I need to go away and think up a plan and come up with an ideology and a view that is one of integration.' But all we will have done is add to the number of ideologies and views out there. So it has to be about creating an intentionality and a presence and a space from which something can emerge. And that process can probably neither be hurried nor slowed down, but [it also] can’t be born unless it has space to breathe.” “The first thing that I feel will be important for me in returning to my life is the acceptance that normal life is different, and that I can’t expect perfection from myself. That in itself creates a relaxation. The best that we can do is bring more presence and more intentionality, and move in a direction that has that infused in it, and be able to let go of the things that distract us, the ideas that trap us – but that’s going to be a process.”

Then we will have the ingredients to offer to the world, to the workplace, to our families, to our loved ones.” “The necessary step that we all need to take is moving mindfulness away from being something that happens in isolation from the world, to something that happens while we are in the world and that the world can become a tool for.” “The only way in which we have a sense of collective purpose is in the unity of how we direct our attention towards the present moment, towards the world that we’re living in, that we’re all working to protect, but which the busyness of that activity is preventing us from seeing.” “I feel like I’ve spent half my adult life focusing primarily on presence and spiritual development, and the other half on raising a family, the problems of the world, and climate change – and now I feel like the interesting work is at the intersection of those two. I don’t feel like we can really advance unless we’re able to bring those two different elements together in ourselves, in our work, because we’re not really doing it at the moment.”“The systems and the institutions that we have relied upon to see us through this great crisis don’t look capable of delivering what we want. So where’s the edge that we need to dwell with in order to move forward? I believe it’s the integration of how we’re living our lives, how we’re bringing presence and insight to our moment, to the moments of our life and the great challenges of our generation.” “What we need is a collective awakening. Our teacher has said, ‘One Buddha is not enough anymore for our times, for our suffering, for the situations that we are facing. We need multitudes of bodhisattvas, of those who are selfless, those who know how to see the benefit of others as their own benefits, the well-being of the planet as their well-being.'” “Even though what is being shared is so painful, instead of drowning and being overwhelmed by the sorrow, my breathing becomes my foundation. I’m still present with the suffering, but I can guide the suffering. And this inner work, we believe [it] is so necessary for everyone today, because what we are facing will bring up a lot of emotions and feelings and even a sense of despair. And we all need a place of refuge and we need communities. I truly believe that community is the way forward; we cannot do it by ourselves. There’s no superman that can change the situation. We really need a collective movement, a collective awakening, a collective practice.” “It would be very easy to say, ‘I’ve spent ten years following my spiritual pursuits and 15 years working in the climate movement. Now I want to integrate them, I need to go away and think up a plan and come up with an ideology and a view that is one of integration.' But all we will have done is add to the number of ideologies and views out there. So it has to be about creating an intentionality and a presence and a space from which something can emerge. And that process can probably neither be hurried nor slowed down, but [it also] can’t be born unless it has space to breathe.” “The first thing that I feel will be important for me in returning to my life is the acceptance that normal life is different, and that I can’t expect perfection from myself. That in itself creates a relaxation. The best that we can do is bring more presence and more intentionality, and move in a direction that has that infused in it, and be able to let go of the things that distract us, the ideas that trap us – but that’s going to be a process.”

Menders have material intelligence, they have acquired skills. Making is, I think, completely integral to mending. I don't think it works the other way around. I think a lot of makers can mend, but it's not necessarily their driver. There are lots of tribes of makers, and some of them are interested in innovation. And so improving is more of their state of making. And yes, they are mending something, but not in order to mend it back to what it was. We then just think about it as a kind of access of care, and you think about conservation, you think about maintenance, you think about care in daily life and repair, and then hacking and then adapting and so on.”Waking people up to remember that we have making“It was kind of like, ‘Okay, let's open that cupboard and remember we have it.' We don't have to invent it, it's there, we just kind of forgot about it. Too many people forget about it. And Fixperts, Maker Library Network, they really are taking that notion with a social agenda together. So there was an area in ‘The Power of Making' that was very much about communities making together, so it wasn't so much DIY culture, it was ‘MIY' culture, and it was very much the early 3D printers. […] Or materials like Sugru are about fixing but also inventing and maybe doing repair for someone else, and there was this whole notion of the social of communities doing things for themselves and for others.”The importance of engaging with young people to create change“When you think about the challenges we're facing with the environment, it's not just about coming up with how to clean in the ocean or how to reduce carbon footprints, you need a major cultural shift to support young people to even learn to think like that.  We have to engage much earlier with younger people at the stage when they are thinking about what their values are, how they understand themselves and creativity. It becomes a different kind of premise for me than teaching design.  It's not just the sense and the mindset, it's actually enabling. The idea is not enough, they also have to have the skills. One of the new board members is our good friend, Andy Karsner! He joins us at the top of the episode for a quick update on what these seats at the table mean for the Oil and Gas industry moving forward, but especially for humanity and the climate. Second, the unprecedented ruling by a Dutch Court which ordered Royal Dutch Shell to cut its carbon emissions by 45 percent from 2019 levels by 2030 happened. This week, the Nature Agenda. A forest the size of France has regrown since 2000 and The Biden administration introduced its “America the Beautiful” plan. In it, they plan to conserve 30 percent of the nation’s land and water by 2030, calling it the country’s first-ever national conservation goal. Long overdue, but on the table.   Speaking of nature, later in the episode we discuss the role philanthropy can play in accelerating innovative actions and radical collaboration across movements to meet the impact of the climate crisis with the requisite attention. ‘A Fund for the Earth’ as it were.   We invite Dr. Andrew Steer, formerly President and CEO of the World Resources Institute, and as of April 2021, the CEO and President of the Bezos Earth Fund, to talk us through the opportunities and challenges ahead for philanthropy as we begin to make the systemic transition to a green economy.  We ask how he will be looking to spend his whopping $10 Billion (with a B) budget to secure the SDGs by 2030 and create the biggest impact to accelerate various sectors towards their positive tipping points.   And an absolute smash this week in music from Marie Spaemann. Happy 51st Earth Day, everyone!   Today marks the first U.S. Earth Day Summit convened by President Joe Biden with the aim to strengthen climate ambition among invited world leaders ahead of the COP26 meeting in Glasgow in November.   And while the global community anticipates the details of the U.S’s own NDC announcement expected shortly before or at the summit itself, we speak to John Kerry in his role as Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, about his recent deployment overseas to meet delegates and colleagues ahead of the summit to discuss climate ambition and the urgent need for even more ambitious targets to be pledged in this most decisive decade.   And just before the interview, we bring the latest in climate news this week. We discuss the latest IEA report citing carbon dioxide emissions are forecast to jump this year by the second biggest annual rise in history, the UK’s Prime minister, Boris Johnson, pledging to reduce emissions 78 percent by 2035 compared to 1990 levels, and the U.S. Treasury appointing a climate counsellor, John Morton, to coordinate the efforts of a new climate hub focused on leveraging finance to confront the threat of climate change. Maria Alegría Serna (Bologna-Trento-Zürich) from Colombia came to Europe with the goal to gain more knowledge about the complexity of the food systems as well as about sustainable innovations that she can bring back home to reduce food waste. In Valencia, Maria learns about the power of collaboration and good communication between the industry and local farmes, something that she is missing in Colombia. Food has always been special for her family and Maria is enlightened by the community that can be created around food, e.g. through growing your own food within urban areas and share it with your neighborhood.
