Paramount Pictures is set to take another shot at remaking the classic sports comedy-drama film The Longest Yard. The original 1974 version, which earned critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination, was a delicate balance of comedy and drama, starring Burt Reynolds as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe, a former football star facing a prison sentence. In 2005, a remake directed by Peter Segal, with Adam Sandler in the lead role, took a lighter, more comedic approach and featured a star-studded cast. Despite its commercial success, Sandler publicly confessed that the remake couldn't hold a candle to the original. Now, Paramount Pictures is giving it another go, led by Gunpowder & Sky's Van Toffler and former MTV Films boss David Gale, with Rodney Barnes penning the script. The new iteration aims to bring a fresh perspective to this prison football story, offering a unique take on a classic narrative.
On this weeks segment of Open Tabs, I invite my friend Chris Rivera, aka Diabeto, back onto the podcast to help me review a couple of comedy classics. We continue our journey into the world of Adam Sandler Reboots, Remakes, and Re-Dos in this months episode by looking at the film that would later be remade as an FX original series starring Charlie Sheen 2003's “Anger Management”In a double whammy since both this film and last month's were both directed by Peter Segal we decided to hold off on passing judgement on “The Longest Yards” until we watched and collected the data this month to make sure we had all the facts before making our decision. Will we be able to compartmentalize our personal feelings towards this film to observe without bias? I guess you'll just have to listen to find out.Comments can be directed to AdamSandlerCinematicUniverse@gmail.com and don't forget to follow us on Twitter @TheASCU

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying our damnedest to remember all the things we keep forgetting each day. We're talking about the Peter Segal film from 2004, 50 First Dates.I'm sure we've all got some first dates that we'd really like to forget. The food could have made us sick. Our date was embarrassingly rude to the waiter. It ended in a weird bed with someone who grunts a little too much.Suffice it to say, we all wish that we could have those dates that seem like they should be featured at the end of a sappy romcom. Maybe Hugh Grant shows up and everything will finally be okay.Better still, what if you could relive that date hundreds of times over? Wouldn't that be swell? In some ways, it's hard not to envy poor Lucy in this film. You get to spend an exciting first date with your great love over and over!I'd prefer that without the debilitating brain injury. Endless first dates are nice, but not being able to remember anything? It seems like I've written myself into a corner with this dream. Time to find some scientists to figure this out!(Recorded on September 15, 2022)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:50 First Dates - The Movie Database (TMDB)Punch-Drunk Love (2002) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Uncut Gems (2019) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Jack and Jill (2011) — The Movie Database (TMDB)I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Billy Madison (1995) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Happy Gilmore (1996) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Waterboy (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Wedding Singer (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Big Daddy (1999) — The Movie Database (TMDB)That's My Boy (2012) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Pixels (2015) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Kevin James — The Movie Database (TMDB)Blake Clark — The Movie Database (TMDB)Sean Astin — The Movie Database (TMDB)Boy Meets World (TV Series 1993–2000) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Sixth Sense (1999) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Tommy Boy (1995) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Hubie Halloween (2020) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh (2018) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Office (TV Series 2005–2013) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Hitch (2005) — The Movie Database (TMDB)
As the Eagles & Chiefs prepare for the Super Bowl and since this is Groundhog Day, we thought we'd repeat ourselves and cover a football movie all over again: The Longest Yard. Okay, the 1974 version of The Longest Yard was 115 podcasts ago, while we're talking about the Adam Sandler remake today. Critics don't like this take on the Mean Machine very much, but we ranted about the way they often turn up their nose at comedies and remakes. We just think this is the funnier movie of the two, especially when Chris Rock or Kevin Nash are involved. And, hey, Burt Reynolds even has a major—and we think effective---supporting role. That doesn't mean that this version is perfect though, partly because director Peter Segal doesn't balance the tone very well and he hits most of the same beats the original did. A big plus was casting actual NFL players and pro wrestlers to play the cons and the guards, which allows for the gridiron action to look more real than it might have. So don't cheat at the game you love and then sulk your way through life. Instead, play as hard as you can and then risk your life just to one-up your tormenter as we say nicer things about this edition of The Longest Yard than you might have expected us to. Let's hear from you via Twitter (@moviefiend51 and @scoringatmovies) or an email (scoringatthemovies@gmail.com).
This week the boys welcome 'Proper Podcaster' Stig from Modern escapism to talk The amazing Crash Dummies, Travelling around the Mid-West and Idiot Circus Boys. --- Debuting in August 2020, Modern Escapism was created as an outlet for our team to get together and discuss their hobbies, interests and passions in life. Before we started, none of the team had ever met in person, only via the internet. It was our host Oodles, who had previously done other podcasts who put a call out in a discord group to see if any like-minded people fancied getting creative to start a new podcast. With a ragtag team of people with similar interests and creativity, ideas soon flowed. The shows format was decided, logos were created and soon after Modern Escapism was born. Over the months we became close friends, tightened up our format and even added an additional member when Candy joined the crew in May 2021. We've gone from strength to strength, building a passionate audience and honing our craft. In June we successfully launched our Patreon and our sister podcast, a Dungeons & Dragons actual play podcast called 'Do Dragons Dream of Scorched Sheep?' --- Tommy Boy is a 1995 American buddy adventure comedy film directed by Peter Segal, written by Bonnie and Terry Turner, produced by Lorne Michaels, and starring former Saturday Night Live castmates and close friends Chris Farley and David Spade. This was the first of many films that Segal has filmed with former SNL castmates. It tells the story of a socially and emotionally immature man (Farley) who learns lessons about friendship and self-worth, following the sudden death of his industrialist father. The film was shot primarily in Toronto and Los Angeles under the working title "Rocky Road". Tommy Boy grossed $32.7 million on a budget of $20 million. The film received mixed reviews from critics.[3] Since its release, Tommy Boy has become a cult classic and been successful on home video.[4][5] Tommy Boy and the 1994 horror film Wes Craven's New Nightmare are dedicated to Gregg Fonseca (1952–1994), who died eight months before the release of Tommy Boy. While Fonseca did not work on either film, he served as production designer on the first two Nightmare on Elm Street films, as well as Coneheads and both Wayne's World films which, like Tommy Boy, were produced by Lorne Michaels.
Mark and Erik discuss the 2008 comedy Get Smart. In this episode, they also talk about TV adaptations, swordfish and walking into door frames. Enjoy!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to make our dad proud by saving the family automotive parts business in the 1995 film from Peter Segal, Tommy Boy. What we've got here in the ‘90s is an era of comedy films, namely those starring people like Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Chris Rock, and David Spade, that has a special place in the hearts of many. Heck, just ask Steven to tell you all about those films. I'm sure he could wax lyrical about them for a long time. There's something special about them. The stakes are about as low as you can get in a film. The comedy is a specific sort of loud, brash, and crude. The characters are perfect examples of buffoons. You know what you're going to get with them. What you'll be getting, if you set your expectations at the right level, is a perfectly adequate and nice movie. It's not going to shake the world with its storytelling, but that's not the goal of a movie like Tommy Boy. If you're hoping for The Shawshank Redemption or Casablanca, then you need to look elsewhere, friend. What this film excels at is warming hearts and producing giggles. That's because it's got a heart as big as its comedy. It's the perfect encapsulation of everything that our dearly missed Chris Farley wanted to bring to this world. He wanted to bring silliness and happiness into this world. I think he did exactly that with this film. While Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may have been the runner-up to former President Donald Trump in the recent CPAC straw poll, his chances of ever becoming president himself are not good, according to Florida’s top Democrat. “You know, he went MIA for three weeks in November claiming that he was working on some statewide plan. My take is that he probably had COVID and didn’t want to tell people when the vaccines first came to our state,” Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services Nikki Fried tells co-host Molly Jong-Fast on the latest episode of The New Abnormal. Fried also spills the tea on DeSantis’ handling of the coronavirus pandemic and his real boss—Trump. “A lot of it was, he [DeSantis] was getting his nod from President Trump and wasn’t able to do anything without President Trump’s approval, and the same thing is happening here, because now President Trump is a resident. So I’m sure that [DeSantis] is consistently calling the president and I’m sure the president’s wealthy friends in the state of Florida are asking for the vaccines, and so they’re getting it delivered to them.“But Fried isn’t done truth-telling about DeSantis and how his vaccine rollout will burn down his presidential aspirations, after he allowed non-residents to claim coveted doses for themselves while Floridians went without. “He allowed for out-of-state people to come into the state. So we heard, you know, big donors and people on the boards of hospitals and nursing homes were flying into our state,” she tells Molly. Also in the episode, Peter Segal of NPR’s beloved quiz show Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me! joins Molly to talk about the emotional life of politics and everything that isn’t on Twitter. Sagal feels passionately that when the aliens come down to Earth, they are going to not see much of a difference between left and right wing cable television rhetoric.“Differences that are obvious to us would not be to a Martian,” he says. “Looking at a camera and explaining to us very seriously and very sincerely why another group of people are terrible... They’re trying to get the audience to feel the same way about the opposite group of people, to feel indignant, to feel angry, to feel righteously upset about how awful these people are to feed that fuel. And what that says to me is that we’re more alike than we thought.”And then the crew brings on David Shor, who says his job is to “get Democrats elected” but his formal title is head of data science at Open Labs.Shor tells us how Democrats can win elections and the big problem with the 2020 election.“One of the big stories of this election is that those non-white conservatives started to vote more like white conservatives, that we started to see this ideological polarization that’s happened over the last four years,” he says. “This has been a long-term trend, 2018 was worse than 2016. I think it’s something that a lot of people ignored, that there were a lot of races where Democrats did substantially worse than [Hillary] Clinton among non-white voters, and it was impactful. The reason we lost the Florida Senate race, or the Georgia gubernatorial race, if we had done as well among non-white voters as Clinton did, we wouldn’t have lost those races. And in the same way, going to 2020, I think, you know, 2020 was worse than 2018. And if you look at some survey data, you get some hints as to why. We ended up asking after the election, we did a large post-election survey of Latinos and asked a battery of issue questions just to try to get at what was motivating some of these voters who switched over. I think the single largest predictor was attitudes toward crime, attitudes toward public safety, attitudes toward policing.”All of that plus Kyrsten Sinema’s Marie Antoinette imitation and the secret to getting that sought-after “NPR voice” on the latest The New Abnormal. If you... Wait Wait Don't Tell with Peter Segal, had Bryan Cranston on as a guest last week and he was asked about his Charlie Manson story. Tommy Boy is a 1995 road comedy film directed by Peter Segal, written by Bonnie and Terry Turner, produced by Lorne Michaels, and starring former Saturday Night Live castmates and close friends Chris Farley and David Spade. This was the first of many movies that Peter Segal has filmed with former SNL castmates. The film was shot primarily in Toronto and Los Angeles under the working title "Rocky Road". TOMMY BOY Plot Synopsis: Tommy Callahan Jr. is a slow-witted, clumsy guy who recently graduated college after attending for seven years. His father, Big Tom Callahan, owns an auto parts factory in Ohio. When Tommy arrives back home, he finds he has a position at the factory waiting for him. His dad also introduces Tommy to the new brake pad division of the factory and to Tommy's soon-to-be stepmother, Beverly, and her son Paul. But when Big Tom dies, the factory threatens to go under unless the new brake pads are to be sold. Therefore, Tommy must go on the road to sell them, along with the assistance of Richard, Big Tom's right-hand man. Will Tommy save the company, or will the factory, and the town, go under? Join Kevin, Kyle and Hayley as they take a look back at this fan favorite comedy with a fantastic cast and see how it has remained a true classic to this day, and a film that represents everything that Couch Potato Theater is all about. Pete Segal has established himself as a sure-handed comedy director with hits under his belt like Get Smart, Anger Management, 50 First Dates and, perhaps his most revered - Tommy Boy (which currently celebrates its 20th anniversary!) On the set of Grudge Match... He also happens to be my best friend. But I still learn some things about his path I didn't know. From a show biz-connected set of parents, going from New York to L.A. to Phoenix back to L.A. again, through USC as a Broadcast Journalism major, to working in local T.V., Pete showed that always pushing the envelope of creativity - at any level - would get noticed and appreciated. It's not what it looks like... You'll hear some great stories about the late Chris Farley, some insight into what it's like to direct strong personalities like DeNiro and Nicholson...and there's even a pretty great O.J. story. (Yes, that O.J.) We also talk too much about stuff that nobody will think is funny but us. But listen anyway... -LM You can follow Pete on Twitter @pete_segal
