Organized and Fabulous Mom - Organization made easy for overwhelmed moms Simplified and Fabulous Mom

Hey Friend!  When I opened this book with my son this morning, I had no idea how much I needed to read that. It was so perfect for what I was already talking with my family about. Sometimes it's just the way we are looking at things that make them seem so awful. I challenge you to look for the good in every situation, and in every person you interact with and find a way to be a blessing in someone's life today! As we go through each day, we can get so distracted by our never ending to-do lists, problems and challenges, or just the busyness of everyday and forget to check our thoughts. Did you know that even plants need to hear positive things? Our words and thoughts are so important!  When we look at the messes in our homes, many of us forget that others have children in the hospital that can't play with toys or dress themselves. We forget that our kitchens are messy because we have delicious food, and many around the world would love to have our problems! They would love to have a husband who works long hours and comes home exhausted at night, because theirs hasn't worked in years.  When we look for the bad things we are ALWAYS going to find plenty. We are human after all. None of us is perfect, myself included. BUT, when we start to look for the good, we start to see little, tiny things everywhere that we can be thankful for! Let's all work on looking for the best things in our homes and in those around us and saying out loud what it is we see.  We can all use a compliment and praise every day, right? Cooking up Connection: Holiday Meal Strategies for a Happier Family with Bri DeRosa

Helping Families Be Happy

On today's episode of the "Helping Families Be Happy" podcast, host Christopher Robbins, co-founder of Familius Publishing, husband, father of nine, author, fisherman, backpacker, and aspirational musician based in the Central Valley of California, talks to Bri DeRosa about books, particularly what to do for holiday meals and those recipes that we want to make and how to have that be a wonderful experience.    DeRosa is a freelance writer and communications consultant with expertise in creative and dramatic writing, arts education, and service learning. Bri has over a decade of experience in program development for non-profits and small businesses and has been the content manager at the Family Dinner Project since 2014. Additionally, Bri has contributed to three cookbooks and actively engages in family dinner practices with her husband and two teenage sons.   Episode Highlights:  02:02 DeRosa explains that the Family Dinner Project is a non-profit program under Massachusetts General Hospital Psychiatry, highlighting the benefits of family meals and noting the gap between potential benefits and actual family meal practices. 03:07 As the holidays approach, Christopher discusses the stress associated with traditional family gatherings and queries about alternatives to meeting at a grandparent's house. 05:37 DeRosa points out that research suggests the quality of interaction at family meals is more important than frequency and shares tips on how to make holiday gatherings more meaningful and stress-free. 06:58 DeRosa encourages sharing the stories behind traditional dishes to create a richer family experience and suggests activities like a family photo caption contest and storytelling prompts to engage everyone and make the holiday special. 07:51 Christopher introduces the concept of an heirloom dinner, encouraging the exploration of family stories and histories related to traditional foods. He also introduces the topic of handling difficult conversations at dinner, such as politics or religion, that can create division. 09:08 DeRosa continues to offer creative ideas for family engagement, like drawing family trees on paper tablecloths and playing trivia games to learn about each other in a fun setting. 10:52 DeRosa mentions the idea of a 'politics jar' where individuals can contribute a quarter each time they mention a hot-button topic, encouraging redirection to other conversations. 11:27 DeRosa provides solutions for surprise tensions at the dinner table, such as taking breaks, focusing on gratitude, and steering conversations towards positive subjects. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining boundaries and redirecting negative discussions. 13:28 DeRosa advises coordinating with hosts to create a quiet, safe space for neurodivergent children and to establish clear expectations for both the child and other family members regarding food and seating arrangements. 15:10 Setting expectations with the neurodivergent child is also stressed, says DeRosa. She suggests bringing familiar foods for the neurodivergent child to avoid pressure and make them feel at ease during meals. 15:57 Christopher talks about the challenges of having children with soy allergies and the importance of being aware of dietary restrictions during family gatherings. 16:22 DeRosa shares that she may host a varying number of guests and talks about the family tradition of making a New York-style crumb cake and stuffing with a special ingredient from her mother and grandmother. 17:53 Christopher describes his Thanksgiving routine of brining a turkey and making garlic raspberry mashed potatoes with parmesan, a fresh garden salad with avocados and blue cheese, and fresh rolls with homemade jam. 18:55 DeRosa discusses her Thanksgiving menu, noting adaptations for a neurodivergent family member, like garlic mashed potatoes without Parmesan and a kale salad with dates and pumpkin seeds.   Key Points: DeRosa underlines the value of family meals for various aspects of well-being and identifies the disconnect between the potential benefits and the reality of family dining habits. Strategies for inclusive and stress-free holiday gatherings are discussed, including managing sensitive topics and enhancing the experience through storytelling and family history exploration. Practical advice is offered on how to accommodate neurodivergent family members at gatherings, such as setting clear expectations, providing safe spaces, and respecting dietary restrictions.   Tweetable quotes:  "Bridging the gap between the benefits of family meals and actual practices is key for healthier, happier families." - DeRosa "Holiday meals are about stories, not just recipes. Share the history behind the dishes to enrich your family experience." - DeRosa "For neurodivergent family members, comfort during meals comes from clear expectations and familiar foods." - DeRosa "Garlic mashed potatoes and a fresh garden salad with avocados and blue cheese - holiday cooking is as much about tradition as it is about taste." - Christopher Resources Mentioned Helping Families Be Happy Podcast Apple https://thefamilydinnerproject.org/ Podcast Editing

@thefamilydinnerproject thefamilydinnerproject.org MAKING THE MOST OF DINNER WITH ADOLESCENTS Beat Dinner Table Tension for Good - The Family Dinner Project Home for Dinner: Mixing Food, Fun, and Conversation for a Happier Family and Healthier Kids (Harper Collins, 2015)  Eat, Laugh, Talk: The Family Dinner Playbook (Familius, 2019). WHY THE FAMILY DINNER PROJECT?  Research shows most think eating family dinner is a good idea, but fewer than 1/2 of American families do so. 70% of meals are eaten outside of the home and 20% in the car!    The Family Dinner Project is all about the not perfect but “good enough” meal to inspire families to get back to the diner table.    Bottom line: studies show regular family dinners reduce high-risk teenage behaviors such as: substance abuse, smoking, eating disorders, behavioral problems in school. Family dinner is also correlated with lower rates of depression and suicidal thoughts.    Dr. Fishel shares what motivated her in 2010 to create the Family Dinner Project and the evidence based benefits to the BODY (eating at home is healthier: lower rates of childhood obesity), BRAIN (cognitive benefits: school readiness, earlier reading and higher academic performance) & SPIRIT (mental health benefits: family dinner is a more powerful deterrent against high-risk adolescent behaviors than attending church or getting good grades!).    WHY DOES FAMILY DINNER HAVE SUCH AN IMPACT?  Long ago families had built in connections throughout the day, now we can all be “together” in the same house and be completely disconnected. Who doesn't sometimes text their kids in their own home?    The real power of family dinner is that it provides a reliable time for parents and kids to connect with one another- face to face!  At its core family dinner is a ritual with scripted and unscripted parts! Assigned seats, same meal rotation but new conversations re: what's happening in kids' lives and world events.    Family dinner is an opportunity for : Early detection of problems and conflicts in your child's life.  Storytelling, which is the main way we all make sense of the world!    HOW DO WE DEFINE FAMILY DINNER ANYWAY?   Ideally, NOT “Leave it to Beaver” but hopefully more of a “team sport” with many hands making lighter work.   For single parents or other families with a traveling parent, just 2 people have to eat together for it to be considered a family meal.    Take Out OK too! If a meal is eaten with conversation and story telling, that's a family dinner.    Once a week is better than none, and it doesn't have to be dinner. Possibilities: 7 breakfasts, 7 dinners, 2 weekend lunches, and even nighttime snacks! Goal is not to achieve a magic number but just to increase connection.    WHAT GETS IN THE WAY AND WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED FROM FAMILIES AND RESEARCHERS?  Lack of Time  Hard work of making dinner  Picky Eaters  Too much tension and conflict at the table Teens not wanting to eat with parents    Solutions: Flexible courses, push back on culture of extra time commitments, share the load, make double batches, cook with shortcuts, deconstructed ingredients for picky eaters but no bribes, go easy on criticism and avoid hot button topics. 80% of teens value family meals but it needs to be a bridge to their world, not a place where they feel like they can't be themselves.    Dr. Fishel shares her own experiences with her mom, Edith's, “speedy” cooking and her dad, James's, world class storytelling.    She is forthright re: experience as a working mom getting dinner on the table with 2 sons, sees dinner as an adjunct to family therapy and employs past family dinner experiences as a powerful teaching tool for psychiatry residents studying family dynamics.    BIO  Anne Fishel, Ph.D. is a family therapist, clinical psychologist, and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School. She is Director of the Family and Couple Therapy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, MA. Dr. Fishel is also the executive director and co-founder of The Family Dinner Project, a non-profit initiative, based at MGH, that helps families on-line and in communities to have better and more frequent family dinners. She is the author of Home for Dinner: Mixing Food, Fun, and Conversation for a Happier Family and Healthier Kids (Harper Collins, 2015) and the co-author of Eat, Laugh, Talk: The Family Dinner Playbook (Familius, 2019).

In today's episode of the “Helping Families be Happy” podcast, host Dr. Carla Marie Manly, a practicing Clinical Psychologist, Wellness Advocate, and Author based in Sonoma County, California talks with Christopher Robbins, Founder of ‘Familius Publishing'. He is talking about the 10 Habits of Happy Family. He also shares tips to those struggling families who are missing all these elements of being a happy family. Episode Highlights 01:53 – Dr. Carla enquires, where the 10 Habits come from? 03:47 – Christopher shares, they started to frame this around these 10 habits and it was nine at first. 04:47 – The 10th habit is about giving because giving as a family will strengthen that family when they look outside of themselves, says Christopher. 07:37 – Dr. Carla asks Christopher about his views on people who are struggling to find that time to sit down at the family dinner table and connect. 09:22 - All you listeners out there who might have not had a family dinner in a while such sage advice. Start small pick one day one meal and make that filled with love and joy, says Dr. Carla Marie Manly 11:06 – Christopher states, it's all about the time that you can give to another person to show your interest in that person. 13:05 – We don't need any healthier habits here but consistency is such an important part of showing love, says the host. 19:29 – Dr. Carla says when we're connecting with someone if we don't understand them, that alone can be so connective. 22:06 – Christopher mentions that healing is more than just a band-aid.  23:33 – There are so many people who are discouraged, who have anxiety in some form or another, and we can't say to a depressed person, don't be depressed, mentions Christopher 25:49 – When we show our love, not just say we love you but show we love you it's just the best thing in the world for the part of the body, mind, and soul. 27:38 – When we forgive, we heal that is truth. So, if we want to heal together, learn to forgive each other and move on. 30:14 – Christopher says, no matter what it was working, there were lessons taught and opportunities to talk and to learn and to trust and to love. 32:33 – The host states that when we join with a child in sweeping the floor or folding the clothes or picking up their room and making it a game and making it fun, we accomplish the same task, but we accomplish it with joy and connection.  Three Key Points Christopher highlights, no one habit is better than another and they don't even prioritize these. The 10 habits are - eat together, heal together, laugh together, learn together, love together, play together, read together, talk together, work together, and give together. It is really about creating intentional habits that make us healthier human beings and thus supporting a healthy family. We need to do our best slowly but surely to make some of these habits come to life in our homes. Tweetable Quotes “Depression and anxiety tend to be reduced when we volunteer when we give.” - Dr. Carla Marie Manly “My recommendation is to start slow, pick one day a week that you say as a fan” - Christopher Robbins “Eat, laugh, and talk that provides you with recipes, games and conversation starters.” - Christopher Robbins “You can show love to your family by also making sure that there are consistent fouls that are helpful.” - Christopher Robbins “Consistency does bring that peace of safety and safety builds trust.” - Dr. Carla Marie Manly “We have a great book called ‘The Big Book of Family Games; this book has no technology allowed.” – Christopher Robbins “Sometimes just by showing the interest builds that trust that then allows them to start sharing with you.” – Dr. Carla Marie Manly ‘When people start sharing with you, their problems, their challenges, they're not necessarily asking you to solve them for them.” - Christopher Robbins “Forgiveness asks us to let go keep a good boundary maybe set a new boundary, but to let go of the resentment, let go of the pain.” - Dr. Carla Marie Manly “Take advantage of the opportunities that exist in the world and marine life is not just to be endured, supposed to be enjoyed was to our best to enjoy it.” - Christopher Robbins   Resources Mentioned Helping Families be Happy Podcast Apple Dr. Carla Marie Manly Website LinkedIn Twitter   Instagram Podcast Editing Christopher Robbins: Website

This episode can be summarized with one word: boundaries. As a married couple bound by covenant, you are charged with upholding your commitment with diligence and wisdom. Sometimes in-laws aren't on board with that vision, especially if they don't understand the complete dynamics of your marriage or season in life. This can create stressful, unenjoyable relationships. In this episode, we propose 5 principles we believe to be crucial for happy, health in-law relationships. Along the way, we share tangible ways to make steps in the right direction... especially if you're experiencing difficulty in this area. Show Notes: The big idea: in-laws should advocate for our marriage instead of for only their child. There may be relationship problems and frustrations, but if they're not "the big issue" above, they can be worked out with grace and patience. 5 Principles for Healthier, Happier Relationships with In-Laws: Have grace: Remember, they need grace, they're not perfect... just like you. Understand what "leave and cleave" means. Matthew 19:4 (Jesus speaking) Establish boundaries. Communicate clearly to them what you expect from them. ("We want you to advocate for our marriage." "Respect our marriage." Etc...) Ask clearly for help and communicate expectations. Have perspective about in-law relationships: do what works for you, and don't compare to others or put too much weight in cultural context. Remember that Jesus is working in you and through you to perpetuate the gospel in those relationships. Today's Couples Challenge: Go through the 5 above principles for healthy in-law relationships. Identify any potential in-law pain points. Create a plan for a biblical way forward that protects your marriage and honors relationships. Mentioned in the Show: Learn more about The 31-Day Pursuit Challenge, our couple's devotional. Ask any question, leave us a voicemail, or write a letter to your spouse! Don't forget! Please SUBSCRIBE, RATE, and REVIEW this podcast on your app of choice. It takes 30-60 seconds, and it helps get the word out about gospel-centered marriage. Thank you!

Kathryn interviews Harvard Medical School professor Anne Fishel PhD, author of “Home for Dinner: Mixing Food, Fun, and Conversation for a Happier Family and Healthier Kids”. If we could lower rates of obesity, break the cycle of alcoholism, and decrease the incidence of teen pregnancy, shouldn't we try it? Fishel shares hard numbers to prove that eating dinner as a family does all those things and more - it's good for the health, brain, and spirit of all family members. Kathryn also interviews Wall Street tech leader Caroline Arnold, author of “Small Move, Big Change: Using Microresolutions to Transform Your Life Permanently”. 90 percent of individuals that make New Year's resolutions will fail to keep them. Noticing this trend, Arnold started her year of behaving differently and made microresolutions that target specific behaviors to meet more precise and obtainable goals. Her creative insight has helped to make her one of the leading innovators on Wall Street.
