Asia is bracing for tariffs from Donald Trump's election victory. The President-elect is proposing adding up to 20 percent on import tariffs, but is also vowing to impose 60 percent on Chinese imports. But Asia business correspondent Peter Lewis told Heather du Plessis-Allan Asia has been preparing for this for a couple of years now. He says some economists reckon this could knock 2.5 percentage points off of China's GDP, and Japan and South Korea could also get dragged into the crosshairs. Lewis says there's also a lot of questions around security - as Trump calls for countries to pay more for Taiwan's defence. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kiwis are being warned to prepare for a more challenging trade environment as Donald Trump returns to the White House. Trump has proposed a tariff of up to 20% on all imported goods, with China potentially receiving special treatment and a tariff of up to 60%. New Zealand exports about $8 billion worth of goods to the US every year, and tariffs could have a significant impact. Damien O'Connor was a Trade Minister during the Biden Administration, and told Kerre Woodham that any tariffs implemented by Trump as President, we simply have to live with. He says that if tariffs are slapped on in the US, then other exporters will simply shift their product to the other markets as well, so we may have to compete with them on price. “These tariffs will not help anyone across the globe, including the very people in the US who they think it's designed to help.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rosemary Banks – remember that name. She now has one of the most important jobs for New Zealand – a potentially $2 billion job. She's woman in Washington DC, our ambassador to the United States. Her mission: get us an exemption from Trump's tariffs. The scale of the problem: massive. Early estimates show that at 20% it could cost us $1.7 billion every year. Total exports currently $8.8 billion. It can be done: the Aussies got an exemption on steel and aluminium in 2018 under Trump. Is she up to the job? I'm told yes. If anyone can do it, Rosemary Banks is the person you want up there. I'm told she has excellent contacts in the Republican Party and is working the phones hard. She was asked to stay on by Winston Peters back in May, in anticipation Trump might get in. She's the same ambassador who was in charge when we nearly got an FTA during Trump's first term. Of course, it's not all on her. Winston and Todd McClay and Luxon will play their parts too. But the ground game is on Rosemary. We may have some advantage here in that we export food, and food is something Trump probably doesn't want to make more expensive. Then there's the uncertainty of whether Trump will actually make good on his campaign big talk. Rosemary's not waiting round for that certainty, they have a plan and by God it better be a good one. We like to hate on diplomats - oh they just go to nice dinners, drink wine and shmooze. Well, it's time to crack out our best pinot, use the contacts and make the deals happen. Gita Sjahrir, Head of Investment at BNI Ventures, and Jeremy Au discussed: 1. 200% China Import Tariffs: Jeremy and Gita explored Indonesia's recent imposition of up to 200% tariffs on Chinese imports like footwear, clothing, textiles, cosmetics, and ceramics. Indonesia's trade minister's remarks "I told my colleagues not to be afraid or hesitant. America can impose tariffs of up to 200 percent on ceramics and clothing; we can too" show that America is serving as a role model for further trade decoupling and is no longer a champion for free trade. They discussed the rationale of "protecting MSMES" - with varied impacts on different sizes and types of local businesses. Gita highlighted Indonesia's historical tendency towards protectionism and the broader implications of such policies on the country's business environment. Jeremy and Gita agreed that while tariffs might provide short-term relief, they do not address the underlying systemic problems around industrial policy or "ease of business" reforms. 2. Ransomware Attacks on 282 Agencies: Jeremy and Gita discussed the recent ransomware attack that compromised the data of millions of Indonesian citizens. Gita explained that hackers held government data hostage and later returned the key due to the government's unpreparedness. She mentioned that ministers and heads of security showed a lack of responsibility and accountability, which highlights the urgent need for improved cybersecurity measures. Gita and Jeremy also discussed the broader implications of such lapses on public trust and governance. They emphasized the importance of having knowledgeable leaders in charge of technology and security to prevent future breaches. 3. 27,000+ Government Apps Consolidation: Jeremy and Gita touched on the Indonesian government's initiative to consolidate over 27,000 government apps into a more efficient system. President Jokowi's directive aimed to reduce redundancy and improve cybersecurity. Gita mentioned that one ministry alone could have over 500 apps, and the government spent around $386 million in the past year creating new apps. They explained that the consolidation effort is intended to streamline operations and enhance security by reducing the surface area vulnerable to attacks. They also discussed the challenges of implementing such a consolidation and the resistance from those benefiting from the current inefficiencies. They emphasized the importance of political will and effective communication in driving these large-scale changes. They also added that the agency responsible for this initiative would be called GovTech Indonesia, similar to Singapore's successful model. Jeremy and Gita also discussed the potential relocation of Chinese companies to Indonesia, Indonesia's private sector's resilience despite governmental challenges, the need for cybersecurity improvements following recent data breaches, and strategies for reducing bureaucratic red tape to foster a better business environment. Trump Vindicated: Supreme Court Sides on Steel Import Tariffs

Real News Now Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 9, 2023 3:55

The apex judicial institution in the United States, the Supreme Court has thrown its weight behind ex-President Donald Trump on a case that touched on steel import tariffs. This case had been the centre of strong opposition by the current administration under the leadership of President Joe Biden. USP Holdings, a key player in the scenario, held the view that the tariffs implemented during the Trump era were out of line. However, the judicial courts lower in the hierarchy disregarded their appeal. On the other hand, the Biden administration broadly kept the tariff levels as they were, despite the pushback from USP Holdings and like-minded steel importers. These dissenters argued that the tariffs set in place had brought about negative effects on their operations. In essence, the tariffs were a thorn in their side. As a pro-manufacturing advocate, Scott Paul, the current President of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, openly supported the stance taken by the Biden administration. He reasoned out that making a hasty move to scrap off the tariffs on steel imports without having an alternative plan in place could spell economic doom. In particular, critical states such as Pennsylvania and Ohio could bear the brunt of a sudden tariff lift, leading to massive layoffs and factory shutdowns. The ripple effect would be a socio-economic impact felt deeply by the residents in these states, extending to the political landscape.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

2019 ending without a Santa rally

Kia ora,Merry Christmas and welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead news the year is winding down without a Santa rally this year. First in the US, there has been an unfortunate and sharp drop in durable goods orders in November, down a startling -5.7% on an actual basis year-on-year.American capital goods orders actually fell an even more startling -13% year-on-year, while the more widely reported non-defence component was down -9.2%.New home sales data delivered much better data, up almost +17% year-on-year, even if this aspect of their housing market is only 12% of their overall housing market. (The existing home-market was up +2.7% in November year-on-year.)Also turning positive was the Chicago Fed's National Activity Index and that was up a bit more than expected. The Atlanta Fed's GDPNow model is showing that American GDP growth probably inched up in the fourth quarter of 2019 to +2.3% and that is slightly above more analysts' estimates. (For comparison, Massey's GDPLive model shows New Zealand's Q4 growth at +2.4% although weakening a little.)In Canada, they report GDP growth monthly, and in October it was running at a weaker +1.2% and well below the +1.6% in September. In China, they announced lower imports tariffs on more than 850 products ranging from frozen pork, hi-tech components and vital medicines next year, as Beijing looks to boost imports amid a slowing economy and a trade war with the United States. They are adopting temporary import tariffs, which are lower than the most-favoured-nation tariffs, on 859 products, according to a statement released by their Ministry of Finance. [Advert]With Hatch, anyone can invest in the US share markets.Billionaire Warren Buffett says investors should stick to areas they know, so it’s no surprise that Kiwis are backing technology companies through our investing platform. Companies like Nvidia, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Disney and Tesla regularly feature as our most popular shares.Visit www.hatch.as/investing to buy any of these US-listed shares and learn more. Overnight, equity markets were pretty stable with only minor gains or losses in most of the major ones. However the exception was Shanghai which dropped -1.4% yesterday in a move not matched elsewhere in Asia and probably related to the tariff drop. Locally, the ASX200 dipped -0.4% while the NZX50 was up +0.6% and both of these were among the larger movers globally. And although there is no Santa rally this year, we should note that the equity market bull run, which started in March 2009, looks like it will continue well into 2020. The S&P500 is up +250% in those almost 11 years, and that is equivalent to an annual gain of +9%. Of course, the rise hasn't been smooth as most readers will know.In Australia yesterday, the release of private sector credit data showed some large negative moves in the 'personal' category. This is where you see Buy Now, Pay Later schemes eating into traditional consumer credit, and the Aussie moves are large (and larger than in New Zealand). For the year to November, this category fell almost -5% taking a toll on traditional credit card and store credit transactions. The UST 10yr yield is unchanged at 1.92%. Gold is at US$1,483/oz and up another +US$5 overnight.US oil prices marginally firmer at just on US$60.50/bbl and the Brent benchmark is now just under US$66.50/bbl.The Kiwi dollar will open firmer today at 66.3 USc. On the cross rates we are also firm at 95.8 AUc. Against the euro we are likewise firmer at 59.8 euro cents. That puts our TWI-5 at just on 71.4 and that is a six-month high.Bitcoin is up +2.5% today, now at US$7,346. The bitcoin rate is charted in the exchange rate set below. You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes.Get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz and subscribe to receive this podcast in your favourite podcast app - we're on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or subscribe on our website.Tell your friends and leave us a review - we welcome feedback.

There are several markets now that are very viable for 3D printing, and that's what Steve Crimi, CEO of Goldsol, Inc., is looking at right now. Steve, along with his business partner and wife, Brenda, sells lots of different products on Amazon in particular. He has spent his lifetime owning and operating successful businesses in the industries of electrical, energy efficiency, and LED lighting. Steve recognizes that 3D-printed end-use products, not just prototyping, are here to stay, and it's a very big market in and of itself. Very recently, the US government is charging product importers a tariff of 10% percent, increasing to 25% at the beginning of next year. The vast majority of products purchased in the United States being imported, Steve knows importation may just not be cost effective anymore. Steve takes a look at how import tariffs may accelerate 3D-printed consumer goods.
