Welcome to a Tuesday update from Unmade. In the interests of topicality we're reworking our publishing rhythm this week. We've brought forward to today our usual Thursday audio-led interview to focus on the Paramount Upfronts which kicked off in Sydney yesterday. And our member-only post which usually happens on a Tuesday, will be later in the week. Further down, we've also got better news on the Unmade Index which finally broke its eight day losing streak. If you've been thinking about upgrading to an Unmade membership, this is the perfect time. Your membership includes:* A complimentary ticket to all of Unmade's events, including HumAIn (2025), REmade (1 October), Unlock (31 October), and Compass (November);* Member-only content and our paywalled archives;* Your own copy of Media Unmade. How Paramount is making one plus one add up to moreParamount yesterday become the first of Australia's TV companies to show its hand during 2025 Upfronts season. One of the challenges of covering Upfronts presentations is that they tend to be a grab bag of announcements, without there necessarily being a unifying theme. That was certainly the case with Paramount, with announcements covering free to air commissions for Network 10, local commissions for streaming service Paramount+, the company's global content pipeline, converged trading technology upgrades with Paramount Connect, and a rebrand that will see 10 Play disappear so it will be Ten across both linear and streaming. And that in itself was the unifying theme. Albeit by accident rather than plan, the global ownership structure of the company leaves Paramount as the best placed media company to argue that the sum of its parts adds up to more than the whole. While Paramount Plus isn't the biggest subscription streaming platform with an advertising tier, it gets to be the only one that is part of a local Upfront. While a distant third behind Seven and Nine in broadcast TV, Ten gets a pipeline of global formats and content from its parent company. While 10 Play isn't as big as Seven's FAST (free ad supported TV) channels, advertisers and agencies can buy across both Paramount+ and 10 Play.To lean in to the acronyms, Paramount is the only company locally that can offer advertisers audiences across SVOD, BVOD, FAST and FTA. The sum of the parts has the potential to equal more than the wholeUnder Hugh Marks, Nine's portfolio felt like a company where its assets across TV, streaming, publishing and radio added up to more than the whole. More recently one plus one has equalled two at best.Seven West Media's TV and publishing assets feel similarly disconnected, even more so since being split into seperate divisions ready for some sort of M&A activity.ARN Media's (so far failed) takeover plan for SCA was about being stronger in the single medium of audio. Southern Cross Austereo's valuation will go up as soon as it finally offloads its fading regional TV licences (presumably mostly to Paramount) and becomes a pure play audio company. So what to make of Paramount's announcements? There's a further investment in live reality TV alongside I'm A Celebrity. Big Brother returns to its original home where it ran for its first eight seasons, before three seasons on Nine where it relaunched well out of the 2012 Olympics before fading, and five seasons on Seven which took much of the life out of the format by moving to a cheaper pre-recorded format.Big Brother will be live on Ten and streamed 24 hours a day live which is almost exactly the sort of content FAST was invented for. There were no other major format surprises. Have You Been Paying Attention, MasterChef, Taskmaster, Survivor, and Thank God You're Here all return. The Project stays on air.Talking ‘Bout Your Generation (or Talkin' ‘Bout Your Gen as it will be this time) has been revived minus Shaun Micallef as host. Sam Pang will get his own show.During the podcast conversation with sales boss Rod Prosser and programming lead Daniel Monaghan, I didn't detect much of an appetite to go after a big (and expensive) sporting code. The kite flown at the weekend by NRL boss Peter V'landys feels more like an attempt to scare Nine into thinking it could face an auction. There was also some paranormal activity from Paramount. An Australian version of sitcom Ghosts, which started life in the BBC in the UK will be cast shortly (I have my suspicions we won't see it on screen until 2026). I'm intrigued how the caveman character of Robin from the original will translate into a local character without controversy around First Nations people. Monaghan tackles that in the interview. And a spooky six part scripted drama Playing Gracie Darling will land on Paramount+As well as talking about the content announcements, the interview addressed the question of how the TV industry can stop sounding defensive about its fading linear numbers and start getting aggressive about streaming.Prosser acknowledges: “We don't see ourselves as a free-to-air business anymore. We see ourselves … as a premium video business. Obviously, the free-to-air asset is incredibly important. It's important to recognize a couple of things. The first thing is that the free-to-air linear still drives the biggest reach.“The second fact is linear audiences are declining. I think none of us can have our heads in the sand about that.“We were artificially propped up through Covid. I think everyone recognises that.“And that decline that we knew was coming has come. And I think we'll see stabilisation in those audiences now.”“The reality is television is still a mass-reaching vehicle. And I think there's no reason to be defensive around that. We own it.“But I do think the linear audiences have found their place.”* Declaration of interest: My travel and accommodation for the event was covered by ParamountUnmade Index finally breaks losing streakThe Unmade Index finally broke an eight day streak of declines to record a move upwards yesterday, growing by 1.36% to 443.3 points. The best performer was Domain, majority owned by Nine, which rose by 4.3%. That in turn helped lift Nine by 2.1%.Rival TV network Seven rose by 2.9%.Among the larger stocks, Southern Cross Austereo had the worst of it, slipping by 3.8%. SCA's market capitalisation of $122m is the lowest it has ever been. The smaller audio stock of Sports Entertainment Group, owner of SEN radio, lost 7.6%.Today's podcast was edited by Abe's Audio. We'll be back with another newsletter tomorrow. We also have a clarification. In Saturday's Best of the Week, I reported that VOZ streaming would launch on November 25, as a means for advertisers to frequency cap their campaigns across differing media plartforms. I mentioned that this had previously been announced as December 29. In fact, that date is the full launch of VOZ as a trading currency and remains the same.Have a great day.Toodlepip…Tim BurrowesPublisher - Unmadetim@unmade.media This is a public episode. Not nineteen forever. That's certainly what you'd imagine if Lukasz Fabianski's career history is anything to go by. In Saturday's defeat to Man City, the West Ham goalkeeper replaced Alphonse Areola at half-time, racking up his 19th direct involvement in a goalkeeping substitution. Three of those have come since January, meaning we're hedging our bets that number 20 could well occur before the season is out. Elsehwere in the Premier League, Aaron Ramsdale, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Sam Johnstone were all thrust into action at their new clubs, while Dean Henderson not only made three vital stops in a draw for Crystal Palace at Chelsea, but in turn bagged Celebration of the Weekend. In the EFL, Bristol City's Max O'Leary and Christy Pym of Mansfield staked their claim for Save of the Weekend, on the international stage a new three-man selection was introduced for the England Men's senior team and the U21s, and over in France a ray of light was handed to much-troubled Bordeaux thanks to a last-gasp goalkeeping equaliser.

Those who challenge us fail to realize we probably have more in common than they think. It's our worldview that define our actions each day and it is out of a profound love for others that we share the message of Christ. It's this love that aims to liberate many from the self-constructed confines of sin, guiding the lost back to redemption. The news was first reported by the “Pro-Woman, Pro-Child Safeguarding, Anti-Bullsh*t,” media outlet Reduxx. According to the outlet, Twitter contacted the two women — Jasmine Sussex and Leah Whiston — on May 16, notifying them that they had violated Australian law in several of their tweets. The platform told the two that a “government entity or law enforcement agency” had informed them of their alleged crime, and that the platform had been forced to hide the content from Australian users. The posts in question had been critical of Jennifer Buckley, a female-identified male. Buckley had previously announced online that, after two years of transitioning, he had induced lactation and had begun breastfeeding his newborn son, who his wife had given birth to. Sussex was heavily critical of this, telling the U.K.’s Daily Mail that “men shouldn’t breastfeed because breastfeeding [is] for the baby,” and that “there is no evidence that any male-induced milk is equivalent to mother’s milk.” “We have no idea if the substance is even milk. It’s absolutely a human experiment on babies,” she told the outlet. As a volunteer breastfeeding counselor, Sussex was reportedly fired from her job in 2021 for failing to comply with the adoption of “gender neutral” language in breastfeeding care — a claim which the ABA denied to the Daily Mail. A year after, she was removed from the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA), Reduxx reported. “I was sacked for. … ‘Engaging in Sectarian Controversy’ in breach of the ABA constitution,” she told Reduxx. “In other words, continuing to talk about the dangers of gender identity ideology for mothers and babies, including how men were forcing their way into the breastfeeding relationship by attempting to induce lactation.” Whiston, meanwhile, is the representative for the Standing for Women Queensland (SFWQ) page. She had posted a Twitter thread on the page, revealing that an LGBT lobby group had allegedly given the ABA $20,000 for them to create an educational booklet about “chest feeding.” https://www.dailysignal.com/2023/05/22/exclusive-leaked-policy-exposes-fox-news-stances-on-woke-ideology/?fbclid=IwAR36KJiUko85jY6nRrQSX4DH2XOZAwUdyaTl-iEhQIfZe9w-ZPnsTY3cAnA Leaked Policy Exposes Fox News Stances on Woke Ideology Fox News employees are allowed to use bathrooms that align with their gender identity, rather than their biological sex, and permitted to dress in alignment with their preferred gender. They must also be addressed by their preferred name and pronouns in the workplace. These are just a few of the policies outlined in the company handbook, dated January 2021, a copy of which was shared with The Daily Signal. Fox also offers to help employees come up with a “Workplace Transition Plan” to ease their gender transition at work. The revelations comes amid conservative consternation at Fox Digital’s use of activist language like “gender affirming care” in stories on its website, as well as the site’s consistent use of female pronouns for biological males like TikTok celebrity Dylan Mulvaney and swimmer Lia Thomas (formerly known as Will Thomas). Fox also drew strong backlash for a June 2022 on-air segment praising a child’s gender transition as an “inspiration to others.” That segment briefly depicted California state Sen. Scott Weiner, a far-left Democrat who led the move to soften sex offender registry requirements for sodomy with minors, and highlighted the activist claim that a child might commit suicide if he or she is not permitted to transition. Carlson’s show was canceled April 24, days after he delivered a viral speech at The Heritage Foundation’s 50th anniversary gala. Fox News Media has not given a reason, simply stating that the two parties “agreed to part ways.” A source who still works at Fox News told The Daily Signal that after Carlson’s show was canceled in April, producers for the new 8 p.m. “Fox News Tonight” program were told not to bash Mulvaney. That directive came from high-level executives, the source said. Fox News did not respond to The Daily Signal’s multiple requests for comment. Under the category “Gender Transition,” Fox’s employee handbook promises that the company is dedicated to “expanding and strengthening” efforts to “sustain a more inclusive work environment.” The Fox employee handbook is posted on Workday, where employees can see company guidelines or policies, a former employee told The Daily Signal. “Employees who are transitioning their gender have the right to be open about their transition if they so choose, and to work in an environment free of harassment, discrimination, or retaliation, and without fear of consequences or transphobia for living openly,” the policy says. Citing the Human Rights Campaign, one of the most prominent LGBTQ organization in the country, the Fox handbook defines a slew of LGBTQ terms, including cisgender, gender expression, gender-fluid, gender identity, gender non-conforming, gender transition, LGBTQ, non-binary, and transgender. For the past several years, Fox received a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, “the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality.” A former Fox News employee told The Daily Signal that the company frequently mentions this perfect score in employee training materials. “Fox News devotes hours of programming to attacking ‘woke companies,’ but ironically Fox is as woke as the rest of them,” another former Fox News employee told The Daily Signal, emphasizing that Fox viewers would be “astonished to find out what the company is like.” Fox’s policies appear to be aligned with the legal requirements in New York City, where the company is headquartered, as well as California, where a large number of its employees work. The handbook explicitly states that any employee “may access the restroom corresponding to their gender identity.” “If a transitioning employee expresses a desire for increased privacy they will be provided access to a single occupancy restroom where available,” the handbook says. “However, no employee shall be required to use a single occupancy restroom if they do not wish to do so.” When trans-identifying TikTok star Mulvaney was first gaining prominence last year, producers for “Tucker Carlson Tonight” had to fight to be able to refer to Mulvaney with male pronouns in the show’s chyrons, the former “Tucker Carlson Tonight” producer told The Daily Signal. Carlson’s team also fought to be able to host The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh on trans issues, the producer said, but the team was repeatedly met with resistance from Fox on this due to Walsh’s frank condemnation of transgender ideology. This may have also been due in part to Fox’s view of The Daily Wire as a competitor, the former producer suggested. https://www.based-politics.com/2023/05/22/this-public-college-is-giving-out-paid-internships-that-openly-exclude-white-people/ This public college is giving out paid internships that openly exclude white people Martin Luther King Jr. famously dreamed of a day when Americans would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Well, keep dreaming, MLK, because segregation and open race discrimination are making a comeback—this time, in progressive bastions like our higher education system and in the name of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” The University of Minnesota just got hit with a federal civil rights complaint because it’s openly conditioning a paid internship program on the basis of race. Their “Multicultural Summer Research Opportunities Program” is “an intensive 10 week summer program in which undergraduate students of color work full-time with a faculty mentor on a research project.” It aims to help in “preparing students for graduate school and developing research skills,” and pays students a $6,000 stipend. A condition of the program is that it is only open to students who “identify” as “a student of color or Native American.” This program’s legality is being challenged by the Legal Insurrection Foundation’s Equal Protection Project (EPP), which “seeks to ensure equal protection under the law and non-discrimination by the government” and “opposes racial discrimination in any form.” They just filed a complaint with the Office of Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education arguing that this internship program violates the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Protection clause of the Constitution. “The U. Minnesota segregated summer program is inexcusable, and it’s shocking that a major university would so openly make educational opportunities open only to students of a certain skin color,” EPP President Bill told Fox News Digital. “There is no good form of racial discrimination. Depriving white students of educational opportunities does not promote racial or any other form of justice.” https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2023/05/21/census-new-york-city-loses-nearly-half-a-million-residents-in-two-years/ New York City Loses Nearly Half a Million Residents in Two Years New York City has lost nearly half a million residents over the course of just two years, newly released United States Census Bureau data reveals. The Census Bureau data, which shows population estimates for mid-2022, finds that fewer than 8.4 million residents remain living in New York City — still making the Big Apple the nation’s most populous city by several million. In April 2020, the very start of the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, more than 8.8 million residents lived in New York City. This figure indicates a population loss of more than five percent from April 2020 to July 2022 with almost half a million residents leaving the city. Americans moving out of deep blue cities is widespread, the Census Bureau data shows. The second largest city, Los Angeles, California, and the third largest city, Chicago, Illinois, also lost residents over the course of two years. Similarly, Chicago had about 2.67 million residents as of July 2022 but in April 2020, the city had about three percent more residents. Over the two years, about 85,000 residents left Chicago. Weight and Healthcare
Special Edition: Dangerous New American Academy of Pediatrics Guidelines for Higher-Weight Children

Weight and Healthcare

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 12, 2023 13:24

This is the Weight and Healthcare newsletter! If you like what you are reading, please consider subscribing and/or sharing! At their base, the guidelines recommend intentional weight loss for higher-weight children via “Intensive Health Behavior and Lifestyle Training” starting as early as age two (2) with drugs as young as twelve (12) and surgeries starting as early as age thirteen (13).There is a lot to unpack here, and this will be a multi-part series but I have had a flood of requests to write about them since they came out, and I had to get very familiar with them because I presented Grand Rounds at Children's Minnesota this morning, so I thought I would get started with this first ever special edition of the newsletter so that I could get this info to you sooner and keep Saturday's newsletter from becoming a novel! I'm going to start with conflicts of interest because I believe these form the rickety scaffolding upon which the rest of these recommendations rest. When I think about conflicts of interest, I generally feel that having a conflict of interest is not proof of bias, but is certainly a red flag indicating the need for taking a deeper look. Failing to freely and openly disclose a conflict of interest, on the other hand, seems more to me like a red flag doused in gasoline and set on fire. There's a lot of the latter type of red flags in these guidelines. To address conflicts of interest, the guidelines themselves state:FINANCIAL/CONFLICT OF INTEREST DISCLOSURES: An Independent review for bias was completed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr Barlow has disclosed a financial relationship with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development as a co-investigator.That's it. That is the only conflict of interest information provided. The same language is provided at the top of the guidelines and under the section “competing interests.” I cannot find any link to the actual review that they performed (if I missed it/you have it, please feel free to leave it in the comments!) I have to tell you that Dr. Barlow's disclosed relationship is pretty much the least of my concerns here. For example, based on their disclosure language you might not guess that, of the 14 authors who are medical doctors, at least 7 have taken money from companies that are developing or sell weight loss products that either directly benefit, or may benefit from these recommendations either through the development of a new drug, or approval of an existing drug for adolescents. The amount ranged from less than $20 for food and beverage (typically indicating that the doctor had attended one or more “educational” seminars by these companies,) to one author who took more than $50,000 primarily for consulting and speaking engagements on behalf of these companies. One of the companies that many took money from was Novo Nordisk, the pharmaceutical company which is aggressively marketing the drugs that are discussed in the guidelines (with an acknowledgment that they were included in the guidelines even though the research for them was published after the evidence review had already been completed.) Also, these numbers are only for 2015-2021 and where data is available. We know that Novo Nordisk has been pouring money into their effort to promote Wegovy and make good on their promise to shareholders that they would use the drug to double their “ob*sity* sales” by 2025, so it's possible that quite a bit more money has changed hands than is represented here. Regardless, as you can see, none of these payments are mentioned in the conflict of interest statement.Based on the American Academy of Pediatrics' conflict of interest statement, you also might not guess that, in fact, Novo Nordisk is a “Patron” of the American Academy of Pediatrics itself- donating somewhere between $25,000 and $49,999 to the organization.Other “patrons” of the AAP include:GlaxoSmithKline, maker of the weight loss drug alliGenentech, which sells the weight loss drug XenicalProlacta, which manufactures human milk-based nutritional products that they claim lowers the risk of ob*sityOf course, none of this is proof that they manipulated the guidelines to benefit these companies, but absolutely none of this is disclosed in the conflict of interest statement which, again…big red flag for me. Considering all of this, I am unconvinced that the American Academy of Pediatrics was in a position to conduct an “Independent review for bias” of guidelines that are incredibly favorable for their “patrons” and the companies from which the authors received money. You may also be surprised to learn that disclosure rules don't even require that they acknowledge that almost every author has a career that is based in the “higher-weight as lifelong chronic illness” model that these guidelines embrace and perpetuate. There are authors who run pediatric weight loss clinics, authors who run pediatric weight loss surgery programs, authors who are employed as pediatric weight management specialists. Below you'll find a list of the authors with information that I pulled from their various online bios about their past and current work in pediatric “ob*sity” as well as the payments I found to them on openpayments.cms.govFor almost all of the authors, these recommendations will increase the market for their services. That doesn't necessarily mean that's why they are making the recommendations, but it's still the literal definition of a conflict of interest. And yet, no disclosure of this is even required and, as you might imagine, none is made. There is also one oddity that I want to point out. Sarah C. Armstrong (who, of the authors who are MDs, took the most money from pharmaceutical companies that do or may benefit from these guidelines at $51,050.45) claims “I subscribe to a "health at every size" approach to supporting children, teens, and young adults living with ob*sity” on the same webpage on which her title is “Medical Weight Management Specialist.” That is, quite literally, impossible as those two things are mutually exclusive. Health at Every Size™ stands completely opposed to the concept of weight management and the pathologizing of body size, including the use of the term “ob*sity.” There is no ambiguity or grey area here, Health at Every Size™ is the trademarked brand of the Association for Size Diversity and Health, there are literally rules for this. So, from my perspective either Dr. Armstrong (a medical doctor who is co-authoring guidelines for other doctors) doesn't understand the basic principles upon which she claims her practice is built, or she is co-opting the language of weight-neutral health in order to promote weight loss. Either way, to me this is concerning enough to point out.I want to be clear, I don't think that these authors are necessarily trying to create profit for themselves, or to harm children. There are a LOT of degrees and certifications held by these authors, and many hold positions at prestigious universities and healthcare facilities. I think they are probably well-intentioned and truly believe that they are doing what's best for children. (As someone who is both queer and fat, I can imagine that if, a few decades ago, you had gotten together a group of doctors who had centered their careers on treating “homosexuality,” you would have gotten guidelines very much like this.) I also think that they are deeply misguided, and that's not surprising given the billions that the weight loss industry has poured into conflating health with weight and weight loss, including in the research, and the (mis) education of healthcare practitioners. If you want to send pizza money for Krisha to do a blind smell test, use PayPal to send money to KrishaAndFrank @gmail.com  Frank once went to a meetup of ex-New Yorkers to have pizza and Drake's cakes. When he mentions the creamy filling, Krisha hits the cliche deejay bell. Frank says she gets to use it because her name is first on the show and because he is not a bell chauvinist.  At the meetup, they served pie from Brooklyn Pizza, which has since closed. The pizza chef now owns Little Nicky's Pizza in Solway. Krisha wants to get some birthday cannolis from Little Nicky's. Frank is reminded of getting pizza with his dad at Columbus Circle after participating in an exercise program called “Saturday Morning Boys.” The boys would go to a calisthenics class followed by specialized classes in fencing, boxing, track, swimming, etc. On her birthday, Krisha had a mani/pedi. Her fingernails were dipped. Frank stops her from showing her toenails on camera. He knows a young woman who gets creepy messages from guys asking to see her feet. In Saturday's episode of The Honest-to-God Series on World of Empowerment Radio, Aingeal Rose and I got to grips on Understanding Humanity's Genetic Origins. It all arose from weeks and weeks of exploring who our ancestors really were, and the Nephilim and the Annunaki and the Pleiadians and the Elohim and the Star People kept coming up. So, of necessity, this episode of The Honest-to-God Series was divided into two parts because the questions just kept coming, and consequently it took longer than we anticipated. And still it is not complete. We must return to it again in the future. Watch the video or listen to the podcast to get these questions answered. But for now, in these two sessions we found that... What we've read and been taught is not correct. We realized how much we don't know. We found how much of our history has been hidden from us. We found the real purpose of control dogmas on Earth. We found who the Elite are and why they want to keep their bloodline pure. We found it is possible to change our DNA. And we found we can consciously increase our frequency. In this, the 1st part of this session on Understanding Humanity's Genetic Origins, the Questions we asked were: Who were the Nephilim? Did the Nephilim mate with humans? Where did the Nephilim come from? Were the Nephilim barbaric? Did the Annunaki create the Nephilim? Are the Nephilim related to the Elohim? Are we the offspring of the Nephilim? Are we the offspring of the Annunaki? Are the Elite the offspring of the Annunaki? Who are the Elite descended from? Were the Egyptians Annunaki? Who were the Star People? Did humans originate inside or outside this dimension? Did humans originally have 6 fingers and 6 toes? Has the Biblical Original Sin anything to do with our DNA coding? Is Genesis just a summary of millions of years of evolution? So, have a listen to our conversation and let us know your thoughts on it all. We hope you enjoy our effort to understand Humanity's Genetic Origins. Remember this discussion is in two parts, so make sure you are subscribed to us on YouTube, iTunes, Stitcher Radio, Google Play or on our podcast site at http://honesttogodseries.com so you never miss an episode.
