Today on the podcast Bobby sits down virtually with University of Pennsylvania Head Coach Dominick Catapano. Coach Catapano played lacrosse at the University of Pittsburgh before coaching at the high school level. In 2009 he became the Head Coach at Penn. During his tenure Penn has 4X been the Liberty Conference Champions and has been consistently ranked in the Top 25 for Division I. Coach Catapano is a fantastic example of an NCLL coach because he has seen this consistent success while creating an environment where all players who want to play get to play. If you listened to our last episode, this is a definite contrast to the way the Lehigh team operates AND we as a league are showcasing both teams on this podcast because we believe there is not one way to go about competing in the NCLL. As in life, there is not just one way to be successful. His latest essay covers what to do when someone begins playing the victim. Part of the problem with ever-expanding government control of our individual lives is the result of asking it to do too much. Katherine Mangu-Ward makes a convincing case for abolishing the Food and Drug Administration. She reminds us that the role of the state is to protect our rights, not to prevent us from making risky choices. Stories like this feel like job security to me. Dr. Ali Hassannia is Assistant Professor, Department of Qur’an and Hadith Studies, Shahed University of Iran. He has a PhD in Theology and Islamic Studies and has published multiple papers in Persian, Arabic and English. The paper he presented at the 7th International Islam and Liberty Conference was based on the analytical descriptive method using Quranic notions, traditional and Islamic teachings and views of thinkers. It aimed at discussing the limits of tolerance in Islam, particularly concerning freedom, and how some misconceptions could cause the tragic phenomenon of “holy ignorance”. It also criticized both Muslim and Western opinions in this regard. Finally, it showed the connection between intolerance, holy ignorance, radicalism, and lack of a sound understanding of religion. The first ever UK Chick-Fil-A was opened less than 2 weeks ago, and this weekend they announced they will be closing their doors amid backlash from the public.  This comes at the same time as a tweet went viral stating that Chick-Fil-A essentially funded a preacher's trip to Uganda that helped them craft a law imprisoning homosexuals, and even sentencing them to death. It took a lot of digging, but by my research has me calling "Myth" on this one.  Check out this article from truthorfiction.com - This website from what I can tell if fairly unbiased. If anything, they lean to the left. They rated this tweet "Decontextualized."  Even the preacher Chick-Fil-A is said to have funded said himself that he did not support Uganda's law. And the craftily worded stories support that fact by saying sneakily that "Organizers of the conference" helped create Uganda's law. I don't know if you've ever seen a speaker at a conference, but various speakers are not typically people affiliated with said conference. The fact that you spoke somewhere, and then the group that asked you to speak later decided to do something bad, is not proof that you yourself did something bad. Charlie and I spoke at the Young American's for Liberty Conference last month in Detroit. If next month, YAL decides to help craft a Medicare for All law, is Good Morning Liberty guilty of crafting the Medicare for All law? The other organization that there is actual proof of receiving donations from Chick-Fil-A was "Exodus International." Exodus International did in fact send a board member to Uganda in 2009 that said homosexuality was "Evil" in a speech at the conference. Less than a year later, Exodus' president expressed remorse for being involved with the conference in Uganda, and stated that they did not support Uganda's harsh homosexuality law. In 2012, Exodus International disbanded.  If Chick-Fil-A did in fact financially support the creation of Uganda's law, then I would boycott them myself. It should go without saying that this type of law does not fit within the teachings of Christianity in the first place, and it obviously doesn't belong in a free society.  However, it seems like this is a lot of tactical article writing on the part of those looking to tear down an otherwise stellar chicken joint.  Listen to the podcast for more! We spent the weekend at the Young American's for Liberty conference in Memphis, TN. If you haven't heard of them before, check out their website at www.yaliberty.org   www.goodmorningliberty.us   In the recent Democratic debate we were able to hear presidential candidate Andrew Yang's plan for a "Freedom Dividend," or otherwise known as "Universal Basic Income(UBI)." This is not a new idea. In fact, even one of my favorite economists, Milton Friedman, was in support of a UBI as a replacement for the current welfare system.   Yang's proposal would give a direct payment of $1,000 per month to every American above the age of 18. Rich, poor, white, black- it doesn't matter. Everyone above the age of 18 will receive this "Freedom Dividend."   The US Government currently spends $668 billion per year on welfare programs. Remember, "welfare" is just one portion of the social safety net. That number also does not take into account what state's spend on welfare; another portion of the equation that is likely to change under a UBI system.   The most recent count on the amount of adults in the US above the age of 18, has the number at 247 million. A $1,000 payment to each of them would cost 247 billion per month. That's 2.9 trillion per year to fund the "Freedom Dividend," without the administrative overhead costs.   Andrew Yang's UBI is proposed to be covered by a Value-Added Tax (VAT) of 10%. A VAT would be paid by business owners in the production phases of their products. Currently, the US does not have a VAT system in place.
