Why Working Through Ancestral Trauma Is the Key To Healing w/ Karen M. Rose

As a society, we’ve lost much of the healing knowledge that our ancestors held. With that loss, combined with corporate greed, has come a fear of herbal medicine. Karen M. Rose joins me to talk about how the Divine Feminine is rising, ancient medicine is finally coming back, and why you need to heal your spirit. Karen says we need to rediscover how to trust ourselves, unlearning all the years of corporate propaganda that have been embedded into our minds. When we’re ready to expand ourselves, we will feel more comfortable exploring ancient medicines as an alternative to modern, and in my opinion last resort, medicines. Regardless of where your medicine comes from, true healing comes from within yourself. And with the global rise of the Divine Feminine, we’re seeing mass healing on a bigger scale than ever before. But for many women, especially black women, we need to deal with ancestral trauma that’s been passed down through our lineage. What modern medicine is missing is the language of wellness. Modern medicine treats the symptoms but it doesn’t look at the root cause or the health of your spirit. We’ve truly disconnected from the spirit of the earth and are only now finding our way back. Karen believes that we all need to celebrate and feel our joy every single day. Even when you’re fighting the good fight, sad about the state of the world, or whatever other negative emotions are swirling around in you. When you embrace joy, you embrace life… and you should always strive to be that calming and joyful model for others, as Karen is every day. For Karen, our spirit is the most important aspect of ourselves to heal. There is a connection between illness and spirit; you can’t heal only one, and you might find that when you’re healing your spirit, you’re also healing your illness and trauma. How are you finding and celebrating joy every day? How have you connected to your spirit today? I’d love if you shared your thoughts in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode: Why we’ve developed a fear of herbal medicine Where healing comes from How the emergence of the Divine Feminine is healing the world What does it look like to have ancestral trauma in your lineage How modern medicine has ignored the language of wellness Why you need to stay connected to joy, especially through difficult times How you can be a model for joy and relaxation for others What the connection between illness and spirit is How you can show up in both your trauma and your joy   Quotes: “I find that our language in the West is designed to create a separation between ancient medicine and people. So, of course, if we think of it as something alternative or something that is next to normal, we have a harder time using it.” (6:34) “The more healed you become the more you see what you need to heal.” (15:22) “We’re going to delve into all the ways in which plants work in this body but also all the ways in which plants work in the spirit. They cannot be separated from what’s going on around you spiritually and emotionally.” (41:26)   Links Find the full episode post here Find Karen M. Rose Online Follow Karen M. Have you ever wanted to peel back a corner of an artist’s mind just to see what exactly it is that has inspired their work? Well, that’s exactly what we have the pleasure of doing in today’s episode with Benjamin Shine. Benjamin is a brilliant artist who has had a beautiful display in Bergdorf Goodman’s in New York City, worked on a couture line with Givenchy, and even has a piece acquired by The Met. You will definitely want to hear Benjamin’s fascinating story about how he got to where he is today. He went to fashion school, but ended up dropping out just because he didn’t feel like he had the ‘passion for fashion’ that he would need to complete the schooling and decided to pursue his sculptural artistry. He was naturally drawn to a work that isn’t seasonal as fashion tends to be. He also knew he wanted to ‘make something’, but didn’t want to be confined by the body. Have you, like Benjamin, been drawn to something that you can’t explain? Do you believe the universe has called you to that particular thing? Did you pursue it, or did you push it to the side? Let us know in the comments!   In This Episode The unique story of how Benjamin was drawn to tulle. Benjamin’s creative process when presented with a challenge. Some of the different inventions Benjamin has created and produced that fueled his creative flow and taught him a lot about the business aspect of the industry. Why the majority of the portraits he produces are women and how energy plays a part in his materials and works themselves. The lessons Benjamin has learned from the material and the importance of working alongside that material verses overworking it.   Quotes “I think that’s the beauty of aging and experiences, is you grab things as you go along and you don’t necessarily realize you’re doing it.” “There is power in that which is quiet” “Ideas of energy and things like that come into play with this material because, for me, it almost forms energy streams and this idea of manifestation it forms into and out of physical form.” “As a designer, you are thinking ahead to formulate this end product, and therefore you’re almost trying to test yourself. Can you think of all the problems that are going to come up before they happen?…. It’s almost impossible to not have an ego when you are so driven to solve the problems, and be correct, and right, and know it before it happens.”   Links Find the full episode post here Find Benjamin Shine Online Follow Benjamin Shine on Instagram   Claim your free Earth Medicine Healing Bundle Dr. Maya Shetreat Follow Dr. Maya on Instagram | Facebook | LinkedIn Podcast production support from the team at Counterweight Creative

Healing yourself from an autoimmune disease like Multiple Sclerosis sounds impossible, doesn’t it? What if I told you it WAS possible and my guest, Dr. Terry Wahls, has healed herself from MS using her own protocol? Nothing short of miraculous.   About Dr. Terry Wahls Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she conducts clinical trials. She is also a patient with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, which confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years.  Dr. Wahls restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program she designed specifically for her brain and now pedals her bike to work each day. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine, The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions. She conducts clinical trials that test the effect of nutrition and lifestyle interventions to treat MS and other progressive health problems. She also teaches the public and medical community about the healing power of the Paleo diet and therapeutic lifestyle changes that restore health and vitality to our citizens.   About The Wahls Protocol On this episode, Terry shares her miraculous story of healing herself from Multiple Sclerosis. Along with undertaking a strict routine of supplements and dietary changes, she attributes a lot of her healing to doing something every single day.  Having hope and showing her children that she was still capable to do some amount of exercise had a profound impact on her mental health, which in turn helped bolster her physical health. Terry explains what her self-care routine is. Every morning, she gets up and spends two hours caring for herself with meditation, exercise, and electric stimulation. This routine helps keep Terry’s physical and mental health in check. We spend some time together absolutely geeking out about the role of mitochondria in our bodies. It’s especially important to support our mitochondria when dealing with a chronic illness like MS, and Terry explains how she designed her protocol to do this. Luckily, other doctors and clinicians realized the value in Terry’s protocol and encouraged her to conduct clinical trials. She explains what this process looked like in the beginning. One of the biggest obstacles Terry overcame on this journey was finding a medical journal to publish her findings! Of course, we also talk about the spiritual side of Terry’s miraculous healing. Because of the fact that one year she couldn’t walk and the next year, following her protocol, she could is downright miraculous.  Finally, Terry gives us some practical advice about how to follow a Keto diet when you have an autoimmune disease. She explains when and how long you should be on the diet. How amazing is Terry’s miraculous healing journey? Did this resonate with you and your health journey? I’d love it if you shared your thoughts in the comments on the episode page.   Claim your free Earth Medicine Healing Bundle   In This Episode: The power of doing something every day How your self-care routine has a profound impact on your daily health What role mitochondria have in long-term and chronic illness How Dr. Terry Wahls embarked on a clinical research journey so her findings can positively impact more MS patients How to see the miracle in medical science What the best way to introduce the Keto diet to your lifestyle is   Quotes: “Supporting your mitochondria improved the brain’s ability to inhibit that excessive flow of information. It lets us be calmer in all of our responses.” (20:38) “Okay, let’s say that all of my physicians all across the country were incompetent. Now, what about my prospective clinical trials? What about the possibility that this stuff actually does work? Why would you want to miss out on that opportunity?” (35:05) “I want the world to know if I can come back from facing that future to this rich, full life that I have, then they, too, whatever condition their physician tells them they’re facing, there’s reason for them to have hope.” (40:35) “We can’t force people to change. They have to want to change from within. The only way to do that is to inspire curiosity, then have them understand the possibility, then have them believe that this is an achievable task.” (42:23)   Links Find the complete episode post here Dr. Terry Wahls is recruiting for the next MS Patient Study. Why Black Farming Matters w/ Leah Penniman

The ancestral connection between Black communities and farming is integral to our health and wellbeing, but unfortunately, it’s been systematically oppressed over the last centuries. I’m joined by Lean Penniman, Co-Director of Soul Fire Farm, to talk about li mission as a soil steward on an urban farm for Black and Brown people.   About Leah Penniman Leah Penniman (Li*/Ya/She/He) is the Co-Director and Manager of Soul Fire Farm. Li has over 20 years of experience as a soil steward and food sovereignty activist. Soul Fire Farm started in 2010 with Leah’s mission to reclaim the inherent right to belong to the earth and have agency in the food system of Black and Brown people.  Leah’s areas of leadership at Soul Fire include farmer training, international solidarity, perennials, writing, speaking, “making it rain,” and getting deep into the blood, sweat, and soil of the earth. Li is the author of Farming While Black, an actual love song for the earth and her peoples.   About Farming While Black We get right into it on this episode of Navigating our Terrain with my question to Leah: What does being black have to do with farming? Li explains the ancestral connection between Black and Brown people and the earth. Slave traders who brought Black people to America broke this connection. Leah talks about the history of Black farming and how when slave traders went to Africa, they targeted master farmers to bring their knowledge to America. And now, Black communities are systematically cut off from fresh and organic foods, leading to a higher prevalence of ill health. Leah explains how over the years, we’ve lost our connection to the earth. This includes a lack of gratitude for using the land. Li says this lack of gratitude has had a negative impact on the overall health of our nation. There is absolutely a connection between farming, nature, and spirituality. Leah shares some of li experiences in Ghana where she learned from Queen Mothers how to truly connect with the land. This includes asking permission from the land: When’s the last time you thanked your soil for letting you plant there or your seeds for nourishing your body? Asking permission from the earth to make changes on her shows honor and respect to the planet that’s been nurturing us for millennia. We need to allow the earth to use her voice - and even more than that, we need to listen to her. Finally, Leah gives us some practical ways in which we can make a difference in our communities. Whether we reconnect to mother earth with our own farming initiatives to supporting Black farming programs, there is something you can do right away to grow your community. How will you give back to your community today? In what ways will you seek your spiritual connection with the earth? I’d love it if you shared your thoughts in the comments on the episode page.   Claim your free Earth Medicine Healing Bundle   In This Episode: What being black has to do with farming How gardening can help black youths stay out of incarceration What a lack of gratitude for the land has done to the overall health of the nation How farming and spirituality go hand and hand How to ask permission from the land to make changes on it Why we need to allow the earth to use her voice How you can make a difference in your community   Quotes: “Of course, we know what we need to be eating, we have a desire for those foods, we know how to prepare those foods. In our community, we have a long tradition of doing that. But you simply can’t get those foods in many black neighborhoods. They’re not available, not affordable, or are inedible. It’s all of society’s responsibility to look at why we have these disparities and how we correct and create better access to healthier food.” (10:22) “That’s why we’re spiritually, physically, and emotionally sick. The earth is a sibling and we are treating the earth as a commodity.”  (25:23) “I just love the ways that we get to inspire and support each other and keep pushing the envelope towards this world that we all, hopefully, want to see.” (40:19)   Links: Find the complete episode post here Find out how you can support Soul Fire Farm and the black community Buy Farming While Black by Leah Penniman Find Leah Penniman and Soul Fire Farm Online Follow Soul Fire Farm on Instagram | YouTube | Twitter | Facebook Follow Farming While Black on Instagram | Twitter | Facebook   Rise & Root Farm with Karen Washington Watch Just Mercy on Amazon High Hog Farm with Keisha Cameron Watch 13TH on Netflix   Claim your free Earth Medicine Healing Bundle Dr. Maya Shetreat Follow Dr. Maya on Instagram | Facebook | LinkedIn   Podcast production support from the team at Counterweight Creative

The cannabis plant is one of the most holistic, natural healers in the world. It’s been revered for centuries before modern pharma criminalized the use and production of it. Tammi Sweet joins me to talk about how the cannabis plant can positively impact almost every single person who uses it. Cannabis is one of, if not the most, beneficial and healthful plants on our planet. There have even been links between cannabis and eradicating cancer cells. But Tammi doesn’t recommend using her, as she calls cannabis, without forming a relationship with her.  Another piece of advice Tammi gives, especially relevant in our current government client on the legality and funding of the plant, it to share your cannabis seeds with other growers. This allows free distribution without regulation that will benefit the cannabis industry for years to come. Tammi explains who can benefit from using cannabis. From chronic health conditions to anxiety and depression to people who want to form a bond with and boost their endocannabinoid system, cannabis is helpful for most of the population. However, Tammi warns that there are some people who should avoid using high THC cannabis and CBD. In general, cannabis can greatly improve the lives of people who use it. Helping ease pain, improve overall mood, and even impact our digestive health are only some of the positive benefits of using cannabis for its healing properties.  Tammi shares why she believes creating a tincture is the purest way to ingest cannabis. She prefers this method over smoking, vaping, or eating it. She also advises what questions we need to be asking our cannabis suppliers in order to understand the origin, purity, and strain of the plant we’re buying. Have you thought about using cannabis as part of your healthcare routine? If you already use it, what benefits have you seen? I’d love if you shared your thoughts in the comments on the episode page.   Claim your free Earth Medicine Healing Bundle   In This Episode: What the relationship between CBD and cancer cells is How you can form a bond and understanding with the cannabis plant Why you should share your cannabis seeds with other growers How hemp is related to cannabis Who and what health problems CBD can help How you can stimulate your endocannabinoid system How using cannabis can improve the quality of your life Who should avoid using high THC cannabis and CBD Why creating a tincture is the purest way to take cannabis Questions you need to ask your CBD or cannabis supplier   Quotes: “Medical professionals need to stop saying that there’s no evidence. There’s significant evidence that high THC cannabis will help people get off opioids and it is good for pain. There’s study after study after study that proves that.” (5:53) “We’re in a moment where we can actually change the paradigm. Because corporate money cannot get invested right now because it’s not federally legal, the banks can’t get involved, we are at this place where we can all have equal footing. We can support people of color, we can support women. As a way of having equal footing in this huge industry.” (22:08) “When you talk to people and they say it makes them paranoid, the first two questions I ask are, “What strain?” because it’s strain-dependent, and “what were you doing?” I think that if you open too much, in a situation where you weren’t prepared to open, I think that that would cause some negative feelings.” (50:46)   Links: Find the complete episode post here Buy the Wholistic Healing Guide to Cannabis Find Tammi Sweet Online Follow Tammi Sweet on Facebook | Instagram   Claim your free Earth Medicine Healing Bundle Dr. Maya Shetreat Follow Dr. Maya on Instagram | Facebook | LinkedIn   Podcast production support from the team at Counterweight Creative

Welcome to a special episode of MythTake! Rather than bring you our usual format of myth analysis, we're doing something a little different. The Black Lives Matter movement has been gaining renewed momentum, and hashtags like #shutdownacademia and #blackintheivory are highlighting the experiences of Black people in academia. Classics itself is a predominately white whose area of research gets co-opted for white supremacist causes. I have been a multi-potentialite for as long as I can remember. It was only recently though, that I heard the terms "Multi-Passionate" and "Multi-Potentialite. As soon as I heard it, a lightbulb went off and I immediately felt soooooo seen. This week, I'm talking to a fellow "MP" (Multi-passionate/potentialite) he's a Doctor/Artiste/Podcaster/Tv Presenter and the list goes on. We have a candid conversation about what it looks like living that "hummingbird" life. I loved this conversation with Mario and I hope you do too.   More about Mario:   Mario Evon describes his music as Reggae-Soul, a place where R&B and Soul meets Reggae. A former member of the University Singers, and background vocalist for artistes such as Alaine and Benjy Myaz, Mario has performed on the main stage at the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival and has made it to the final round of 'Amateur Night at the Apollo', in Harlem. This graduate of the University of the West Indies as a Medical Doctor, and Berklee College of Music, is also an entrepreneur and songwriter. Mario released his debut album, 'Reggae-Soul Vol. 1: ME On Love' in 2015 and in more recent times you may have heard him singing that you "Don't Need Dope To Cope" on behalf of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO), or bringing light to your Wednesday mornings on 'CVM At Sunrise'. His most recent project has been his 'Inspir-Edu-Tainment' podcast, 'Talk Truth with Mario Evon'.   Medically he functions as Dr. Guthrie, a General Practitioner, working in his own private practice, in the Emergency room at the Bustamante Hospital for Children, or conducting medicals at the Sagicor Life Paramedic Unit. The acronym, M.E. could not be more fitting for him, as he continuously spreads a message encouraging others to be themselves, and pursue their passions despite the odds.   LINKS: Find everything Mario Evon here --> http://linktr.ee/marioevon Website: http://www.MarioEvon.com Podcast: http://www.TalkTruthJA.com Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/MarioEvon Twitter: http://www.Twitter.com/MarioEvon Facebook: http://www.Facebook.com/MarioEvonMusic

If you’ve been feeling off but all your tests are coming back fine, it’s possible that you have heavy metal poisoning. Heavy metals could be behind many of the diseases and illnesses our bodies have such as digestive issues, weight gain, autoimmune diseases, brain fog, and more. Wendy Myers from Myers Detox explains how you can start to detox from heavy metals to regain control of your health and life. Wendy was feeling generally unwell through her 30s and was told she had the hormone level of someone in menopause when she was only 37. Instead of immediately going on the HRT her doctor’s recommended, Wendy decided to get to the bottom of why she had this issue in the first place. After lots of internet research, and a few out-of-pocket tests, she discovered that she had heavy metal poisoning, which was affecting all her other hormones. Wendy thought she was doing everything right. She ate a healthy diet, got lots of exercise, and generally lived well. But heavy metal poisoning doesn’t care about that. Our society is exposed to so many toxic metals - from our cavity fillings to our wall paints and more. We talk about what testing you should get done to check for heavy metal poisoning in your body. It’s an all-over approach from blood to stool. But what if you can’t afford or aren’t in a position to do all these tests? Wendy shares what some of the physical symptoms of metal poisoning are - and gives the recommendation to take her heavy metals test. Wendy believes that we need to go through a detoxification process to rid our bodies of heavy metals. But it’s not just about the detox, we need to lead a healthy, organic life to prevent the poison coming back.  Overall, for our health, we really do need to prioritize removing these heavy metals from our bodies, lives, homes, and diets. Wendy does explain who shouldn’t go through a detoxification process, as it could actually do more harm to their health, but in general, everyone should be able to detox from heavy metals safely. Wendy’s last piece of advice is to listen to your body. If you’re not feeling well and your doctors can’t figure out why you need to push harder and start investigating for yourself.  Have you been feeling unwell in ways your doctors can’t explain? Do you use commercial cleaning products? Do you have white marks on your fingernails? In This Episode: How heavy metals can poison the other hormones in your body How you can have heavy metals in your system even when you live a healthy lifestyle What tests you should get done to check for heavy metal poisoning How do you know if you’ve got toxic levels of heavy metals How you can detox your body to start removing heavy metals from your body What things you can do at home before you work with a professional  Why you need to prioritize removing the metals from your body Who shouldn’t start detoxing to remove heavy metals Why you really need to listen to your body if you’re not feeling well   Quotes: “Heavy metals can cause almost every imaginable symptom and diagnosis. They can either outright cause it or contribute to it in some way, directly or indirectly.”   (18:04) “Detoxification is a lifestyle. We are exposed to so many metals and chemicals that you have to be doing something on a daily basis to be thinking about adding detoxification to your already healthy lifestyle.” (27:07) “If people are trying to do a detox and they just feel terrible, we need to pull back and course correct and do something else. Most people feel great when they detox.” (30:07) Links Find out if YOU have heavy metals  Find Wendy Myers Online Find Wendy Myers on Instagram | YouTube | Facebook | Pinterest   Check out the full episode page Find Dr. Anna Online Follow Dr. Anna on Facebook | Instagram

By putting you first, and not the topic, we are free to explore the connections and inflection points that define you as a whole person. We are able to dig through the superficial layers to get at the real issue at hand. We are able to develop strategies and accountabilities that are required to evoke transformation.I push the boundaries of conventional coaching bias. You see, I served as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy for 22-years. I served at multiple levels of leadership over the course of my 23-year career. I spent seven of those 23-years in senior leadership roles that culminated with my service as the Commanding Officer of a Navy shore facility, where I led a total of 242 service members, junior and senior enlisted leader, commissioned officers, and Department of Navy Civilians. As a Navy Officer, I have had the honor and the burden of leading and serving citizens (people)- our most precious resource and treasure, from all over these United States of America. I didn't have the luxury to pick a niche of sailors. I had to connect and relate to service members from different regions, different military branches, different naval communities; and different races, ethnic groups, religions, and sexual orientation in order to effectively coach, counsel, evaluate, lead, manage, and mentor them. Diversity and cultural competence weren't a luxuries. They were necessary skills that I developed to effectively lead and influence. I had to meet people where they were. I have participated, planned, and lead global operations in the Arabian Gulf and Indo-Pacific regions. I have lived in India and Japan, and worked in the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. I collaborated with senior military officers and peers of regional allies and partners; and business leaders from major defense contractors. I have conducted more than 900 instances of personnel counseling, coaching, mentoring, and performance evaluations over the course of my Navy career beginning in 1996. Once you make the choice to kick that bad habit, embark on that new responsibility or reach for that seemingly unachievable dream, we expect our loved ones to be supportive of our new decisions. However, sometimes this can threaten those same people, and make them seem unattached, disloyal, or straight up mean. When the people we love don't support us it can hurt, but ultimately, it is the natural selection of those you shouldn't be surrounding yourself with. Today I am exploring what to do when those closest to you aren't ready for the changes you are making, and how to cement your new healthy behavior despite any criticism or doubt. You should never feel guilty for doing something beneficial, healthy and loving for yourself, so don't let anyone else make you feel bad about it. When you are able to adopt a positive mindset around healthy lifestyle changes, gain the tools to arm yourself against temptation, surround yourself with those that support you and believe in your ability to persevere, you can ignore the haters and improve your health and happiness. SIBO, or Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, is a condition where the good bacteria that grows in other parts of the gut migrate to the small intestine where it’s not supposed to be. You’ll have symptoms of bloating, stomach pain, cramps, and, of course, gas. The condition affects close to 60 million people across the United States, and guest, Dr. Mark Pimentel, and I have been chatting over the past year about what causes SIBO and how you can treat it. Dr. Mark Pimentel is the head of the Pimentel Laboratory and the Executive Director of the Medically Associated Science and Technology (MAST) program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. A leading specialist in studying the causes of SIBO, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), and other microbiome related diseases, Dr. Pimentel has been instrumental in delivering treatments, tests, and classifications of these gut diseases. Dr. Pimentel believes that a SIBO diagnosis is often overused as it can be a catch-all for many different types of GI disorders and that it’s important to get to the root cause of the issue before starting treatment. We talk about why your tummy makes noise, even when you’re not hungry and why you should probably be avoiding lactose in your diet. We look at the correlation between SIBO and other gut issues with certain vitamins, minerals, and gasses in the body. Do you suffer from bloating, especially after a meal? Is there a history of SIBO or other gut-related diseases in your family? Do you eat a daily probiotic?   In This Episode: What some of the conditions that cause SIBO are Why your tummy makes noise when you’re not hungry and what the migrating motor complex is Why people with SIBO should steer clear of dairy products What the relationship between SIBO, bacteria, and folate (iron) is How methane contributes to weight gain and weight loss prevention How you can incorporate probiotics in your diet when you have SIBO Quotes: “My job is to prove that you don’t have SIBO first but if you do, then we need to prove why you have SIBO.” (3:24) “The association between IBS and SIBO is clear. SIBO, an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine, is something often overlooked by medical practitioners, but it’s a condition that is getting the spotlight more and more often these days. In fact, many physicians have specialized in SIBO because they themselves suffered in the past but never had real access to help. I’m talking with my personal SIBO specialist and world-renowned doctor, Dr. Allison Siebecker, about how she started offering SIBO treatment, as well as more insight into what SIBO actually is. Dr. Siebecker believes she has had SIBO since she was only 5 years old, when she was originally diagnosed with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Though she followed medical advice for many years, her symptoms never got better, leading her to study naturopathic medicine. When this didn’t yield the help she wanted, Dr. Siebecker knew she needed to figure out the answers to SIBO for herself. IBS is the #1 gastrointestinal disorder in the world with over 20% of the population suffering from it - and SIBO is the biggest contributing cause of it, but IBS isn’t the only disease associated with SIBO. We’re looking at how our guts are made up and what a properly working intestinal tract should do. We also talk about leaky gut, whether SIBO is a serious disease or not, and how long it’s going to take to cure your body of SIBO. Have you been diagnosed with SIBO? Do you eat a lot of carbohydrates? How are you prioritizing SIBO treatment in your daily life? Let me know in the comments! In This Episode: How the intestinal tract is supposed to work and what it really looks like How leaky gut is related to the gut and other parts of the body What the symptoms of SIBO are, how they differ from IBS, and what other diseases are linked to SIBO What tests you should ask your doctor to do if you suspect you have SIBO How serious SIBO is, what causes it, and how long it takes to treat symptoms Why diet alone won’t completely cure SIBO as the bacteria overgrowth needs to be removed completely   Quotes: “When we have SIBO, all of our digestion and absorption can be messed up and that is a lot of suffering and problems.” (3:02) “If digestion is disordered, it can lead to so many other problems in the body.” (14:16) “The thing about SIBO diets is that there’s no really one right way to approach the reduction of the carbohydrates because the right way would be to remove them all if we wanted to have no symptoms at all. But that wouldn’t be good, because we need carbohydrates in our diet.” (27:32)   Links Find out more about SIBO on Dr. Siebecker’s Website Join Dr. Allison Siebecker’s Masterclass   Check out the full episode post here Keep up with everything SIBO SOS™ here Follow Shivan on Facebook | Twitter | Vimeo Join the SIBO SOS™ Facebook Community Get access to the complete SIBO SOS™ course catalog

Throughout time, poetry has been an incredibly powerful art tool that is wonderfully compelling when conveying all of the emotions that make life meaningful. Poetry can connect us across time and space and render even the smallest moments meaningful, but have you ever wondered what powers the art of poetry possesses beyond that? Join me as I uncover the intuitive, ancestral and physiological responses one can have to poetry, and explore how poetry can bridge the gap between the art and the sciences to encourage higher order thinking. Accepting poetry as a key influencing factor to encourage learning and spiritual growth in a society can help heighten our intuition and in turn, help us to lead more fulfilling lives. By looking at the movements in our language and the soothing patterns or rhythms found in poetry, it is easy to understand why poetry can be such a powerful outlet for both positive and negative emotions. It is only through the understanding of our physiological responses to poetry, as well as the emotional and mental benefits one can get from interacting with poetry, that we can begin to integrate the coupling of poetry and prose. When was the last time you calmed the chaos around you and took some time to engage in poetic language? Give yourself a minute and leave me a poem in the comments section below!   In This Episode Viewing poetry as a tool for stirring emotions and relating to the Divine How to help your brain recognize poetry as a practical way of transmitting information Breaking down the neurological similarities and healing properties of poetry and music Activating your unconscious reward pathways through the use of poetry Using poetry as a tool to turn your negative emotions into beautiful works of art   Quotes “Poetry is words put together as an art form, its communication, and it is a human connection.” (3:37) “Thousands of years ago, poems were more accessible to the average person than written communication or spoken prose.” (5:45) “You don’t even need to know anything about poetry to appreciate it, it is kind of like wine!” (6:42) “As humans, we are designed to experience all of our emotions, not just the pleasurable ones or the happy ones.” (10:45) “Aesthetic beauty, emotional depth, connection to the human and the divine, communication and education, all of this and more can amazingly be found in a book of poems.” (16:50)   Links Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook | Instagram

There is no denying that the advancement of social media has allowed us to connect in ways we never thought possible before. However, it is also undeniable that these developments have had an emotional impact on the way we view ourselves, others, and the world around us. Social media has drastically impacted how we relate to other humans on a daily basis, and how we communicate with ourselves and those we are in relationships with. On this episode, I break down just what exactly about social media makes us feel good and bad about ourselves, the benefits and repercussions of becoming heavily reliant on social media, and the reality of building up an emotional social media tolerance. Plus, I dive into the role mirror neurons are playing in your ability to empathize, the link social media use has to anxiety and depression, and what you can be doing to make your social media feed a more positive place. Don’t be left feeling unfulfilled by social media and with less-than-satisfying in-person relationships. Prioritize what reinforces your beliefs and makes you feel connected in order to get the same level of joy and excitement out of everything you do. Do you put any restrictions on yourself or your family and social media use? Let us know your family strategy in the comments section.   In This Episode Exploring the phenomenon of positive and negative social contagion The critical role dopamine, cortisol, and oxytocin play in social media thrills Factors that dictate the amount of envy you experience when using social media How to create a more positive relationship with your social media feed Framing the context of social media to how it is relevant to your life experiences   Quotes “The consensus is that we are spending too much time engaging with each other through platforms like social media, and less time engaging in person in real meaningful ways.” (1:15) “By connecting us to others and providing emotional stimulation, social media can allow us to take in pieces of all the pleasure that is portrayed using that medium.” (8:11) “Scrolling through your social media feeds at night might mean sacrificing time that would otherwise be spent developing quality relationships.” (10:48) “The emotional influence of social media is bi-directional. It causes both joy and pain, and is complicated by both internal and external factors.” (14:50)   Links Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook | Instagram

We're all familiar with the discomfort of vulnerability. When we open ourselves up we are increasing our chances of getting hurt, or being rejected for who we truly are. However, did you know that vulnerability can also increase your oxytocin, or the love hormone, and can actually be used to strengthen your relationship? On this episode, I break down the hormones and chemicals that mediate our experience of being vulnerable, the role oxytocin plays in both intimacy and feeling unsafe, and why you need to be using your vulnerability to strengthen your relationship rather than pushing it away. When you give yourself permission to be yourself in your relationship, no matter what relationship it is, it helps you live your own life more authentically. By being honest to yourself and those around you by coming from a place of love, you can become more comfortable asking for helping and have more courage in yourself. It is time to stop living in fear for what might happen, and let someone see you for who you truly are. While it is not easy to share our more innermost selves with others, if you have the strength, the rewards are worth the risk.   In This Episode Understanding the role oxytocin plays in intimacy and vulnerability Using your vulnerability as a strength to make relationships more fulfilling Fostering attention and motivation to take care of any relationship Questions to ask yourself to assess how vulnerable you are being with yourself How to increase your oxytocin to motivate yourself to live authentically   Quotes “Falling in love and revealing our innermost selves to another can be terrifying for some people. But being vulnerable can actually be the key to a more successful relationship.” (6:41) “The brain identifies vulnerability in a relationship, and then invests in trying to strengthen it.” (10:01) “Allowing ourselves to be vulnerable in our most intimate relationships, even when it is really really scary, can ultimately lead to the relationship we truly desire.” (12:43)   Links Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook | Instagram

As a society, we play much less often than we used too. While playtime and imagination used to take up hours of a child’s day, our modern society has shifted away from play and forgotten the vital role it can play in long-term health and wellbeing. Social play as a child is essential to the ability to develop critical thinking skills, resiliency and brain plasticity, problem-solving and quick adaptation, and much more. So why has our society rejected our innate natural need to have a little more play in our lives? Today we break down the exact science behind why our brains are hardwired to play, the roles of different neurotransmitter systems in the body when reacting to play, and why play is critically important during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The thinking and cognitive aspects of play increase our ability to bounce back, think for ourselves and most importantly, have fun. Although the frequency and type of play we engage in changes as we age, it is no less important. It is time to stop letting our overscheduled lives take away from the joyful experience of play. Both adults and children need social interaction and playfulness to keep their brains sharp and keep their lives full, and I believe we should embrace this desire. By encouraging your children to play more and become adventurous, you are encouraging everyone to take the time and enjoy the simplicity of play. Are you ready to invite more play into your life? Let us know how you play in the comments.   In This Episode How playing impacts the functionality and plasticity of your brain Understanding why we are driven by an animalistic need to play What happens to the chemicals in your brain and body when we play Highlighting the vital health benefits of play that extend from childhood into adulthood Breaking down how behavioral inhibition is naturally developed through play   Quotes “Play is essential for the development of an individual and the function and survival of humanity as a whole.” (5:04) “The world, our nature, our consciousness rewards us for playing, that's where the fun is. And that is a clue to the fact that we should play more.” (9:06) “Play is vital in physical health, as well as emotional and cognitive development.” (21:51) “Play is not just wasting time. Play is something we are naturally drawn to do.” (23:28) “Invite more play into your life, because play is a way that we show our love for each other and that we love ourselves.” (24:40)   Links Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook | Instagram

Some breakups hurt more than others, and generally, this is an accepted fact. But have you ever stopped to think about why the termination of some relationships hurt more than others? If a heartbreak has ever made you feel physically ill, I am breaking down some information that may help you wrap your head around the systematic issues that contributed to your real physiological response. I am introducing you to cytokines, one of the main reasons some relationships are harder to get over than others, along with other hormones such as IL 1 and CRH that are playing a role in how you process the end of a relationship. Other reasons why the end of a relationship may trigger physical responses, how your brain makes connections through the body-mind continuum and the role pair bonding plays in creating attachment will also be unveiled in this episode. Having a strong understanding of your emotions, the physiological aspects of love, and how they relate to how we experience our closest relationships is an important aspect of any connection. Exploring the real physiological response when some people fall in love will help you process your past trauma and move forward in happiness. Have you ever been lovesick? When we are experiencing scent, we are actually experiencing information.” (7:07) “The research says that it would be an acceptable hypothesis that cytokine activation may be the cause of the symptoms that ultimately lead to the depression and fatigue during a breakup.” (10:34) “To me, it is clear that our emotional life and our physical life directly affect each other.” (13:58)   Links Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook | Instagram

Whether you’ve planned to have kids or not, finding yourself a single parent is not something you set out for with intent. Being a single parent is hard work. And trying to co-parent with your ex can be an even bigger struggle. As a single parent, you’re going to struggle with feelings of shame, guilt, and pain - and the most likely source of these feelings is you. Single parenthood is a struggle that no one’s going to prepare you for and your relationship with your ex is going to be different from anyone else’s relationship with theirs. Co-parenting with your ex isn’t always going to be easy. And having an amicable relationship with your ex isn’t a one person decision. The moment you split, there are two different attitudes to parenting, two different lives, and two different opinions that will all have to be taken into account. In this solo episode, I’m talking about my personal experiences into the crazy hard world of single parenting. I tell you how I knew that my ex wasn’t “the one” and how I wish so much that we had a friendship to fall back to. I’m explaining why it’s so important to get validation from yourself and no one else. Why the other parent to your children is going to fall into their own unique ex category - and how that’s going to impact you for the rest of your life. Perhaps most importantly, I’m talking about forgiveness: why you need to forgive yourself, your ex, and all the other people that will have an opinion on your broken relationship. When my son gave his mother’s day project to his dad’s new partner instead of me, I thought my heart was going to fall out of my chest it was so broken. But thanks to my own dad’s tough attitude, I learned that it’s okay for your children to love other people in their lives. You can’t waste time sitting in shit for a long time - there always comes a point where you just have to move forward. Are you going through a divorce? Do you have children with your ex? How do you talk to your children about love and forgiveness? Leave me a comment on the episode page!   In This Episode: Why it’s so important to be friends with someone you’re going to date What you need to understand about your own self-validation What the different kind of breakups are and how will impact your life going forward Why you need to accept that you will have different parenting styles than your ex How to parent with intention Why you should consider therapy as you go through a divorce How important it is to have good friends when going through separation Why it’s so incredibly important to practice forgiveness Quotes: “Even if you want to be Ned Stark from Game of Thrones, doing the right thing for the right reasons and die with honor - an amicable relationship as a single parent isn’t really a one person decision. It takes two.” (4:35) “My only job in our interaction at this point was to demonstrate and role model parental behavior. Outside of that, friends or not, I’ve done my job.” (6:27) “Becoming a single parent, you’re redefining everything. You’re redefining who you are as a person, as a parent and what life looks like in the aftermath.” (11:24) “Allow people to show as much healthy love to your kids as possible. Is a memory ever picture perfect? I argue that while letting go of things does play an important role in life, so does holding onto memories and what makes them special for our unique experiences. No two people ever experience a situation the same, which means your memories are yours alone. By recognizing that we all remember things differently, and there is no singular truth to any situation, we can better understand how memories work and their power over us. By using a combination your memory and your body's interoceptive ability you can begin to make intelligent and appropriate decisions when negatively aroused, and decide for yourself what best serves you in those moments. One of the best ways to increase your intuition is to get out into nature and let your body become enriched by the antioxidants given to us by the Earth. Our body and mind are intimately connected to the Earth, and the more time we spend in nature the more we can increase the coherence between our brain, heart, and gut. If you find that you’re dragging yourself through the day with absolutely zero energy, you’re not alone. An alarming amount of people have a severe lack of energy - and I used to be one of them. Can you believe that I actually used to fall asleep in school? Like, head in textbook, passed out? When we’re children, having energy is just something that comes naturally. But as we get older, from teenage years and up, hormonal changes can cause our bodies to just be huge energy sucking machines. But it is possible to rebuild our energy reserves. Today on the show, I’m talking about my own personal journey from having literally no energy to having so much, it’s pretty much a never-ending flow. I’m giving you my top ten list of ways to naturally increase your energy and letting you know why it’s so vital to prioritize energy in your life. The biggest and, perhaps most important, factor to rebuilding your energy levels is to find and practice something that brings you joy. I’m not talking about buying a new pair of shoes and feeling happy at that - I mean something that sets your soul on fire and brings you purpose. Then I’m going through the rest of my list: getting enough sleep, exercising every day, playing and having fun, eating well, and practicing meditation. These are all pretty straightforward, easy to implement steps, but the fact is that so many people don’t do them! That’s why I’m talking about them today. Do you keep a daily journal? Do you build rest and recovery time into your life? How do you prioritize self-care and meditation?   In This Episode: How to be calmer What energy is, exactly How to guard and lift your energy and why you need to How to create joy internally How helping people can drain your energy Why you need to learn how to say no and hold yourself accountable How energy can help rebuild your energy levels Why proper nutrition is essential to building your energy levels Why you should practice gratitude every single day   Quotes: “Harnessing good energy is following what brings you joy.” (5:08) “Understanding the importance of play and learning to build it into your daily life is a huge game changer.” (6:36) “Journaling is critical to having an objective understanding of what it is we’re working on and what’s working and isn’t working.” (14:27)   Links Find my website at KimBao.co Check out the full episode post here   If you liked this episode, you should probably check out these past episodes: 016: How To Build A Stronger You By Working Through Your Trauma w/ Kim Bao 014: How To Break Up With Social Media w/ Kim Bao 011: How To Allow Your Passions To Dictate Your Future w/ Wynona Karbo

It was seeing my therapist once a week for an entire year that made me realize that trauma and traumatic experiences are more common than I thought. Trauma to Triumph is about showcasing inspiring people who have gone through something incredibly traumatic but have come out on top. Today is another solo episode with me, Kim Bao, to talk about what living and dealing with unacknowledged trauma is. Trauma is a psychological and emotional response to an event that is deeply disturbing and it’s a response that’s perfectly normal. However, there are times when our bodies don’t accept what has happened to us or even try to completely block it out. This means that there are some pretty bad things that have happened to us that we might have no idea about. And that’s what unacknowledged trauma is. Trauma that’s affecting you in so many ways - psychologically, physically, emotionally, and mentally - but you have no idea that it’s caused by something in your past… or present. So it means that we can be medicating for the symptoms, but we’re not treating the cause. In this episode, I talk about why it’s so important to acknowledge all your trauma and to start to work through it. This might take more than just writing in your journal. You might need professional help to do it, and that’s totally okay. There is no quick fix to trauma. You need to acknowledge it and work through it day by day. You’ll be stronger, better, and healthier for working through it. I talk about triggers as well. Triggers are huge, and if you don’t know what yours are, something can come out of nearly nowhere and knock you for six. Self-reflection is super important. Trauma To Triumph
014: How To Break Up With Social Media w/ Kim Bao

On a scale of none to forever, how much time do you spend on social media a day? If you’re anything like me, it’s probably a lot. A lot of time you spend scrolling through your feeds trying to engage with people you don’t know to grow a following because that’s what you’ve been told to do by all these business gurus out there. What if I told you there was a different way? I’m Kim Bao, host of Trauma to Triumph, and this is my first solo show. I wanted to share with you all today why I’ve decided to remove my profiles from all social media. I was always hesitant to start a social media account in the first place, and while I did dabble in 2011, it wasn’t until 2016 when I got fully hooked. I was on my way to an Unleash the Power Within event with Tony Robbins and my friend told me he was connecting to others at the event through Facebook. Intrigued, I signed up and immediately started networking. Don’t get me wrong, I grew a (comparatively) small, but highly engaged audience and have built some pretty solid relationships. But this past Christmas, I decided to do a social experiment with myself. I detoxed from social for 10 days, and when it came to head back online, I really found I didn’t want to. The benefits of being away from social media far outweighed what I got from being present online. Today, I’m sharing with you what that experience taught me and how I’m using that to explore other means of connecting, engaging, and growing my audience. I want to find out once and for all if I can do this without these social networking platforms. And above all, I want to win the way I want to, not the way someone else tells me I should. When it comes to social media, and really, all aspects of your life, ask yourself these questions: Will it help you perform at a greater level? Does it bring you joy? Do you like it? Do you plan on asking yourself these questions? What impact do you think they will have on your life? Leave me a comment on the episode page!   In This Episode: How you can connect to other people you normally never would have without social media What taking a break from social media allows you to do in its place How leaving social media can make you a better person and a more in tune friend Why social media can prevent you from following your true happiness How much time it takes to grow an engaged social media following How to grow an engaged audience without using social media   Quotes: “I have this love/hate... But not really hate… this love/disinterest of social media.” (5:39) “I really wanted my creative space to be mine and mine entirely. I wanted my voice to be more uniquely mine without the influence of competition, comparison, and distraction.” (7:52) “This isn’t where my heart is with social media. I needed to reevaluate, set up some different rules for myself and watch myself win the way that I wanted to win.” (14:45) Links Find my website at KimBao.co If you liked this episode, you should probably check out these past episodes: 013: The Importance Of Owning Your Sexuality & Why You’re Not Alone w/ Brandon Meneses 011: How To Allow Your Passions To Dictate Your Future w/ Wynona Karbo 009: The Importance Of Spiritual Wellbeing On All Aspects Of Your Life w/ Exavier Pope     Come hang out with an amazing group of badass women in a private, supportive community, Bad-Ass Women Owning Sexy Check out the full show notes for this episode! Hey everybody, this week on Eggs we take you on a little walk down memory lane that was literally 10 years in the making. We had the opportunity to sit down with our old friends Curtis Casey and Bill Delrieu, singer and bass player for the international rock music phenomenon, Phoenix, Arizona-based Vayden. Who knew it would ever work out but the moons literally aligned and we found ourselves in a room in downtown SLC reminiscing about the Phoenix, AZ rock scene circa 2005 — which was on-point BTW — building a following, concert and show promotion, Mike and Ryan's history in Phoenix and beyond, trials and tribulations of the music business and a rise to international success. This episode is a real feel-good-fest and we're excited to share the reunion with you guys. Tune in and turn up! Rate, like, share and subscribe! We discuss its impact, what iconic photo inspired it, who created it and yes - how it caused some controversy. Then, Sean says good-bye to one of his favorite series of all time in a completely non-objective review of the Sense8 series finale. Sean will answer the following questions: Did the cluster's final synchronized bow meet all of his expectations? Did the finale provide a sense of closure? When is an orgy more than an orgy?
