Dry Eye Syndrome plagues so many women as they get older. Our eyes naturally deteriorate, but there are some amazing ways that you can boost your eye health. I’m joined by Dr. Travis Zigler and Dr. Jenna Zigler, optometrists who specialize in dry eyes, to talk about what we can do right away to improve our eye health. Key Takeaways Your 3 Day Challenge to Reduce your Blue Light Exposure: Turn off or put your phones to airplane mode when the sun goes down Do something for yourself: Read a physical book, do yoga, or meditation Take the entire hour before sleep to just wind down. About Dr. Travis Zigler and Dr. Jenna Zigler Dr. Travis Zigler graduated in 2010 from The Ohio State University College of Optometry with Magna Cum Laude honors. He is the founder of Eye Love whose mission is to heal 1,000,000 dry eye sufferers naturally.  Dr. Travis and his wife, Dr. Jenna Zigler, use the profits from Eye Love to fund free and low-cost clinics in Jamaica and in the US. They also started a charity called the Eye Love Cares Foundation which provides exams, glasses, and sunglasses for those in need, free education, and scholarships for students that align with their mission. Previously, Dr. Travis and Dr. Jenna owned two optometry practices, which they sold in 2017 to focus on their online efforts. Dr. Travis enjoys reading to his son, Jude, traveling to Jamaica, and playing the ukulele while he drinks his morning coffee. In the future, the Foundation will fund permanent free and low-cost clinics in both the US and Jamaica, and it is their goal to provide optometry scholarships for students who have an interest in eye care mission work. Why We Get Dry Eyes As we age, our eye health naturally decreases and dry eyes become more common. This is much for the same reasons that women find their vaginas drier after menopause. I’m so glad to welcome Dr. Travis and Dr. Jenna Zigler onto The Girlfriend Doctor, who are both huge advocates of the Keto-Green Diet! Following a diet like Keto-Green is one of the first things you can do to improve the dryness of your eyes. This is just one of the steps that Jenna shares about how you can care for your eyes. Her other initial recommendations surround the care of your eyelids, as these have a very direct impact on your overall eye health. Travis and Jenna talk about whether you should wear contact lenses or not. They say that single-use contacts are better and also give insight into how best to care for your eyes while wearing them. We also talk about makeup. Sadly, not many brands of makeup are truly eye-safe. Travis explains why you should replace your makeup regularly, what the problem with permanent makeup is, and why he’s planning a range of single-use makeup brushes. The Problem with Blue Light It’s not just what you use on and around your eyes that can impact their health and dryness. Travis and Jenna talk about other skin conditions, such as rosacea, that relate to your eye health and what you can do to treat both. By now, you’re likely well aware of how bad blue light is for not just our eye health, but our circadian rhythm as well. Jenna and Travis absolutely recommend using blue light blocking glasses whenever you’re on the computer. But in addition to this, they encourage you to get direct sunlight without the use of sunglasses in the early morning and late afternoon light.  Jenna and Travis conclude this insightful discussion with their three best tips for improving your eye dryness. Included in this, Jenna explains how you can give yourself a gentle eyelid massage to help improve the moisture in your eyes. Travis ends by giving us a 3-day challenge to reduce your exposure to blue light in the hour before you sleep. Do you suffer from dry eyes? Will you be participating in Travis’s challenge? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.   In This Episode Why a change in diet can help with your dry eyes [7:45] How to care for your eyelids [9:00] How to wear contact lenses safely to reduce symptoms of dry eyes [13:30] What the problem with makeup is [15:30] What other skin conditions are related to your eye health [26:15] Why we should limit our use of sunglasses [30:00] How to give yourself a gentle eyelid massage [36:00] Key tips for caring for your eye health and preventing dry eyes [40:40]   Quotes “We have an overgrowth of bacteria on our eyelids. If that overgrowth becomes too much it produces a toxic waste product. That causes inflammation, redness, and irritation.” [10:44] “The sun’s also good for blue light. Blue light regulates our sleep cycle. When the sun comes up, it’s the most abundant source of blue light and it’s more than your screens could ever get close to. When the sun goes down at night, blue light goes away. Blue light going away tells our body to start producing melatonin.” [31:33] “Once the sun goes down, you should eliminate all blue light from your life. Which means putting down your phones, putting down your computers, turning off your tv because that’s going to keep you from getting in a deep sleep. Deep sleep is what you need to rest your mind and body.” [32:12] “Take the TV out of your bedroom because the bedroom should be for sleep and sex only.” [33:13] “Get your eyelid hygiene regimen down. The simplest way is adding Hypochlorous Acid to the end of your daily routine.” [41:04]   Resources Mentioned Get Your Exclusive Offer! Use Code: CABECA at Checkout! Learning To Date With More Confidence w/ Lily Womble

Whether you are in a relationship or not, dating requires a large amount of confidence and the belief in extraordinary love within yourself. Dating more confidently and brazenly is all about listening to your body and trusting in the relationship you have with yourself.  With a little work, support, and reframing, it is possible to view dating as an act of self-care and a space to feel whole within yourself.  Key Takeaways If You Want To Approach Your Relationships Brazenly, You Should: Reject narratives that tell you you are not enough, too much, or anything that is not in line with your truth Accept that you are the answer to your dating life and what is meant for you will not pass you by Stop letting the patriarchy influence the thoughts you have about yourself and where you ‘should be’ in life Normalize celebrating when you are thriving in any aspect of your life, not just dating The Connection Between Listening To Your Body and Relationships After working in various fields, Lily Womble quickly rose to become one of the top matchmakers at her firm. This was until she realized that the dating industry is very similar to the diet industry and works to feed on their client's insecurities. So, Lily broke up with the matchmaking game and started Date Brazen to help badass women find extraordinary love within themselves. Swap Your Checklist for an Essence Based List Lily believes that dating apps are like McDonald's. Your mind is programmed to want that sugar fix, and the way we have been conditioned encourages us to think that playing the numbers game will bring you more satisfaction. In reality, this false sense of accomplishment can cause more frustration.  The important thing to remember is that you are the answer to your dating life, not an app, and what is meant for you will not pass you by, regardless if you choose to use an app or not. Instead of basing your checklist off of qualities, you think you want to dig deeper into what that particular hairstyle or height actually means about the core values you are searching for. Extraordinary Is Possible As women, we have been conditioned to believe a legacy of narratives that tell us that we are not enough, too much, or incorrect the way we are. It takes incremental work to gain a sense of wholeness again and reject the patriarchy that influences the thoughts we have about ourselves. By getting to the essence of who you are and being more whole with yourself, you can use that jumping-off point to have fulfilling relationships that are on your terms and will make you feel like the amazing bright star that you are. What is your brag? We want to know! Tag us on Instagram or share your brag in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Why your checklist of what you think you want in a life partner may not actually be serving you (10:10) Tips for navigating online dating when you don’t feel super confident or are afraid of judgment (15:48) How to resolve not feeling like you are enough in order to achieve your relationship goals (22:16) Dismantling the relationship between the patriarchy and how a woman values her worth and views herself (31:08) The difference between celebrating your wins and bragging about yourself all the time (33:05)   Quotes “That is how I came to break up with matchmaking and start Date Brazen to help badass women really find extraordinary love within themselves and in their dating lives with reflective work meets tactical action.” (9:58) “The world is out of our control, there is very little that is in our control. And I think that without guidance, most people who are dating will look for those checklist things like the height, the weight, the college degree; they will look for those things because they think that is all they can control. When, in fact, it is really possible to measure how you feel in someone’s presence.” (14:14) “What I believe is what is meant for you will not pass you by. So whether or not you choose to date on an app, you will find what is meant for you.” (20:14) “This is legacy breaking work, and it takes a lot of time, and it takes me a lot of support to get to the place where I can believe I am worthy of extraordinary love and extraordinary relationships and extraordinary money and extraordinary connection.” (26:52) “I think it is a really beautiful marriage between working on your dating mindset and your dating action plan while also continuing to celebrate who amazing and whole and successful and incredible you are.” (37:21)   Links Date Brazen Website The Brazen Breakthrough Waitlist Date Brazen Podcast Follow Lily on Instagram Join the Listen To Your Body Newsletter Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! Alzheimer’s Disease is a leading degenerative disease in our older population, but it’s one that you can prevent and even treat with early diagnosis. I’m joined by Dale E. Bredesen, MD, to talk about his tremendous work with Alzheimer’s patients. Key Takeaways Minor oral concerns that can contribute to Alzheimer’s Disease Root canals Mercury Periodontitis Gingivitis Leaky Gums About Dale E. Bredesen, MD Dr. Bredesen received his undergraduate degree from Caltech and his medical degree from Duke. He served as Resident and Chief Resident in Neurology at UCSF, then was a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Nobel laureate Prof. Stanley Prusiner. He was a faculty member at UCLA from 1989-1994, then joined the Burnham Institute to direct the Program on Aging.  In 1998 he became the Founding President and CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, and Adjunct Professor at UCSF; then in 2013 he returned to UCLA as the Director of the Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research. The Bredesen Laboratory studies basic mechanisms underlying the neurodegenerative process, and the translation of this knowledge into effective therapeutics for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, leading to the publication of over 220 research papers.  He established the ADDN (Alzheimer’s Drug Development Network) with Dr. Varghese John in 2008, leading to the identification of new classes of therapeutics for Alzheimer’s disease. He and his group developed a new approach to the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and this approach led to the discovery of subtypes of Alzheimer’s disease, followed by the first description of the reversal of symptoms in patients with MCI and Alzheimer’s disease, with the ReCODE (reversal of cognitive decline) protocol, published in 2014, 2016, and 2018.  His book, The End of Alzheimer’s, was on the New York Times Bestsellers List for 5 months and is available in 32 different languages. Diagnosing Alzheimer’s Disease Dr. Dale E. Bredesen joins me to talk about Alzheimer’s treatment, prevention, and causes. This is an enlightening conversation and one that so many of my listeners and clients have asked for. This is especially relevant for women, as statistically speaking, we’re more likely to develop brain and memory-related diseases as we age. Dale provides us with some insight into why we should focus on our brain health once we turn 35. It’s never too early to prepare our bodies for healthy aging. And if you’re already showing signs of memory loss, Dale wholeheartedly encourages you to seek medical intervention early. This is one of the reasons it takes so long for an Alzheimer’s Disease diagnosis. Because we tend to shrug off minor memory failure as just being forgetful, relying more on our long-term memory, it can be difficult to pinpoint the onset of the disease. Dale also explains how some of the different subsets of Alzheimer’s Disease present and what the treatment for these should be. The Keto Diet for Alzheimer’s Prevention The first step to treating and preventing Alzheimer’s Disease, of course, starts in the gut. Dale recommends a Ketogenic diet that relies heavily on plant-based foods - much like my KetoGreen program. There are so many different approaches to Keto you can take, especially depending on what type of Alzheimer’s subset you have. But overall, Dale recommends an overnight fast, vegetable-based, and low in fats such as bacon. Dale also encourages a low Glycemic diet. This is one that’s low in sugar, even those occurring in fruits, as so many of our fruits have been genetically modified over the years to have a much higher sugar count than what’s natural. Finally, Dale gives some very valuable insight into the importance of our oral health. In fact, some of our more common dental concerns, such as gingivitis and root canals, can directly contribute to your likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s Disease! Have you started including a fast in your diet? How long do you fast for? What’s your favorite way to break your fast? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.   In This Episode Why women are more at risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease than men are [12:45] What you can do improve your brain health after 35 [18:00] Why you should stay on top of your brain health and function, especially if you have what you think is a minor problem [27:00] Why Alzheimer’s Disease takes so long to diagnose [30:30] What kind of approach you should take to the Ketogenic diet [45:00]   Quotes “This is a critical piece. You need to make sure for each person that they are getting the appropriate nutrients, blood flow, oxygenation, and hormones to the entire brain.” [19:00] “Your brain has collected so many important memories that this is one of the reasons why Alzheimer’s takes so long to diagnose. You can function so well with what you’ve already learned that the first thing that’s sacrificed, as you’re now downsizing, is the ability to learn to new things.” [30:26] “The paradox is that we are constructed to eat fruits. But the problem is all the fruits that we’re exposed to are extremely high in sugar because people want to sell fruit, they want to make money. They’ve bred these fruits to be higher in sugar. The paradox is that we’re here on Earth to eat fruits, but not to eat the fruits that are currently on Earth.” [1:01:03]   Resources Mentioned Know Your Risk for Cognitive Decline with Cognoscopy Find Out More About Apollo Health Check out Episode 42: Food As Medicine To Help Anxiety w/ Ali Miller Find Dale E. It is time to get the LOVE you WANT ladies! I’m joined by love and relationship coach, Ozzie Osborne, to talk about how relationships are all about feeling cherished and how to allow that space in your relationship. If you are ready to dig deep and learn how to balance your masculine and feminine energy with your partner you won’t want to miss this. In this episode, Ozzie and I talk about the Netflix series “Emily in Paris” and how it’s exactly what this means for romanticizing being swept away by the “prince on the white horse,” how to understand your man and that a healthy relationship is all about balance but it really starts with YOU! About Ozzie Ozzie Osborne is a heart and mind coach, she exclusively developed, her method known as the RISE program. It is a program designed to align the heart and mind for better relationships. She is passionate about coaching people who tend to lean more on their mind (masculine energy) in order to align their heart (feminine energy) to redefine masculinity, so men and women can RISE together. Ozzie discovered her life purpose and passion through the darkness of divorce. After relying more on her masculine traits since childhood she learned that in order to have a better relationship with herself and others, she needed to learn how to better align her heart (feminine) and mind (masculine) in order to RISE above the patterns of behavior that no longer served her. About The RISE Program This episode with Ozzie we talk all about how to align your masculine and feminine with your partner in order to get the love you want. This all stems from her coaching method called the RISE program. The RISE program stands for “Recognize,” “Identify,” “Surrender,” “Elevate.” Over the course of 30 days she works with her clients to acknowledge that we all have both feminine and masculine energy and how it each shows up in areas of life where there might be a disconnect. From there she allows her clients to let go of the energies that are no longer serving them and elevate both energies in a way that aligns with your higher self. In This Episode Why frustrations arise [2:56] Is it really all about being swept away on a white horse?! [5:15] Understanding your man [17:14] The past will repeat itself if you let it [21:15] Align your expectations [25:58] It’s all about partnership [32:01] Self-love is the key [33:50] Resources Mentioned Find Ozzie Osborne on Facebook | Instagram About Boss Mamas Mindset A podcast aimed to empower ladies juggling boss mama life, in order to ignite their passions, expand their minds, and elevate their business and life. If You Want to Embrace Mindfulness and Meditation You Should: Stop assuming your thoughts are facts and start being decisive about the thoughts that you give your attention Shift your relationship to your experience of life by understanding what is going on in your brain  Turn small daily practices into moments of mindfulness to help you calm your brain and take control of your mental space   When my husband Alex said he wanted to try meditating but didn’t feel he had the time or the knowledge to ‘do it right,’ I knew there had to be a better way. Luckily some friends recommended Muse Meditation Technology, and it has totally changed his and my world.   What Is Muse with Ariel Garten Muse is a brain-sensing headband that helps you meditate by translating your brain activity during meditation into guiding sounds. It was co-founded by Ariel Garten, a Neuroscientist, mom, former psychotherapist, and former fashion designer. Ariel is probably one of the most interesting people you will ever meet and is passionate about helping people understand what is actually going on in their minds.   Choosing the Thoughts You Pay Attention To Most of us go through life on autopilot, assuming that the thoughts in our head are supposed to be there and are facts. In reality, you have total control over what thoughts you want to pay attention to and the ability to take power over your own mental space.  Meditation is not about stopping your mind from wandering. It is about training your ability to notice when your thoughts are wandering and choose to focus your thoughts on things that are actually serving you. By understanding what is going on in your brain with the help of technology like Muse, you can shift your relationship to your experience of life.   How To Embrace Mindfulness Every Day Mindfulness can help you see the world differently. By truly experiencing what you are doing on a daily basis, even if it’s just putting on your moisturizer or going for a walk, you can practice mindfulness until it becomes an unconscious habit. It is possible to turn any practice in your day into a mindful moment that can reduce your stress, calm down your brain, and help you focus instead of being distracted. Are you willing to spend 3-5 minutes per day soaking in the enormous benefits of meditation, reducing your anxiety and fear biases, and applying mindfulness into your daily life? Share what you loved most about Ariel’s science-based approach to meditation and mindfulness with us in the comments section of the episode page.   Quotes: “When you meditate, you are in that space where there is nobody sitting in your brain telling you what to do, there is nobody telling you that you are doing it right. And if we could create a tool that would solve that problem for people, we could get more people meditating. And it worked!” (11:02) “Having beliefs about ourselves, that we are not good enough or the thing we did was terrible, and just living through that. But that is just a thought. That is not necessarily reality, and that is not necessarily the thing that you need to choose to go over and over and over again. Because you have a choice.” (16:33) “The trick with a meditation practice is not ‘how much am I doing it’, but it is ‘am I doing it regularly?’.” (23:06) “What you are training in focused attention meditation is your ability to notice the wandering of your mind and then shift your choices around following your thoughts. So if your mind wanders, totally no problem, the question is just what do you do with it.” (25:40) “When you engage mindfully in an act, it is as if the world becomes sparklier and brighter. You’re feeling it, you are smelling it, you are experiencing it, you are here with it here and now. You are making that moment of your life meaningful at that moment with the experience you are having. And that is a transformative way to be.” (31:07)   In This Episode Why you should embrace meditation as the most powerful stress-relieving tool available by natural means (13:30) Understanding the neuroscience behind meditation and how to overcome your wandering thoughts and stress (17:10) Dismissing the common misconception that in order to meditate you have to stop your mind from wandering completely (24:50) How to embrace and create mindfulness in your daily life to stop being so distracted all the time (27:02) How to use Muse S to improve your sleep naturally and fall asleep faster (36:30)   Resources Mentioned: Organifi Green Juice 15% Off Shop Page Learn More About Muse Here Muse Meditation Technology Use Discount Code choosemuse Here Follow Muse on Instagram | Twitter Follow Ariel on Instagram | Twitter   Related Episodes:  Episode 222: Approachable, Effective, Strategies For Managing Anxiety Even During Difficult Times with Cameron Rogers   Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

Having that temptation is normal, but what defines you is your response to it. Do you blame your dissatisfaction with life on the external—economy or weather —or do you assume that you have complete control over the situation? Once you do the latter, things will change, slowly but surely.     Progress Under Pressure As a fellow human being (I presume), our mind’s natural first choice is the path of least resistance. If you give yourself a way out, you will seek it and perhaps even take it. There’s something to be said about being kind and patient with yourself, absolutely. However, the best Plan B is no Plan B. Once you give yourself no choice but to do the hard thing, you’ll be amazed with what you’ll achieve.     You Have to Climb The Mountain to Appreciate The View We all love the idea of snapping our fingers and achieving our goals, but without the struggle of the journey, we can’t truly appreciate the achievement. Most of our autoimmune conditions stem from unaddressed childhood trauma. I’m joined by Dr. Keesha Ewers to talk about how she healed her Rheumatoid Arthritis and breast cancer by working through past traumas, and how she helps guide her patients through their own healing journeys.   The Four P’s That All People with Autoimmune Disease Have: People Pleasing Perfectionism Holding on to the Poison of Past Pain Having a Pitta Ayurvedic type   About Dr. Keesha Ewers Dr. Keesha Ewers is an integrative medicine expert, a Doctor of Sexology, a family ARNP, a Psychotherapist, is board certified in Functional Medicine, and holds an advanced certification in Ayurvedic medicine. She is also the founder and medical director of the Academy for Integrative Medicine Health Coach Certification Program. Dr. Keesha has been in the medical field for over 30 years. After a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis —an incurable disease according to Western medicine—she discovered how to reverse autoimmunity using her Freedom Framework Method, which she has now used with thousands of her own patients and teaches to her health coach students in her online certification program. She is also the founder of a branch of medicine now called Functional Sexology. Dr. Keesha is a popular speaker, including at Harvard and from the TEDx stage, and the best-selling author of Solving the Autoimmune Puzzle: The Woman’s Guide to Reclaiming Emotional Freedom and Vibrant Health and Your Libido Story: A workbook for women who want to find, fix, and free their sexual desire. You can listen to her Mystic Medicine Radio Show and find her programs on her website.   How Our Bodies Hold Onto Trauma Dr. Keesha joins me to share her incredibly personal, painful story of autoimmune disease, healing from past trauma, and now living a full and healthy life. When Keesha received a diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis, her doctor basically told her that was it - she had this forever. Keesha knew there had to be more out there besides Western medicine diagnoses, so she set out on a quest for alternative medicine. Through this search, she discovered yoga and then Ayurvedic medicine (essentially the Eastern version of Functional Medicine). Through her journey into learning more about Ayurveda, Keesha learned how our bodies can hold onto past traumas. These traumas and our body’s response to them can actually cause our autoimmune conditions! So while there are definite benefits to, for example, cutting sugar from your diet, amongst other changes, Keesha found that it was working through and healing these traumas that had the most profound impact on her. In fact, not only did she reverse her Rheumatoid Arthritis, but she also cured a later diagnosis of breast cancer.   Don’t Give These Traumas Extra Energy Dr. Keesha gets into the specifics of how our brains and bodies actually hold onto traumatic childhood events, especially when they’re reoccurring. And honestly, traumatic experiences in your childhood don’t have to be on the scale of abuse; Keesha explains how even feeling like you can’t complete, for example, running the mile in gym class can contribute to your traumas. When you start to work through these traumas, you’ll learn exactly how much energy you and your body are consciously or unconsciously giving to them. And giving that much energy to something is exhausting! When you really think about it, is there any wonder some of us respond to these events with chronic health conditions?  We’re never taught how to navigate and heal. Emotional healing is essential for our physical bodies to also heal. Dr. Keesha urges you to learn how to communicate with your body. To learn what language it speaks, understand what it’s saying, and giving your soul’s vessel what it needs to thrive. Do you have an autoimmune condition? What steps have you taken to heal your past traumas? Let me know in the comments on the episode page.   Quotes “Things were being answered in the paradigm of Ayurveda that Western medicine couldn’t answer.” [8:40] “The fact of the matter is,  Rheumatoid Arthritis is not curable, indeed Western medicine correct. But it is reversible. And that’s the beautiful part.”  [15:08] “This isn’t about the trauma. It’s about your response to the trauma. The meaning you make up for the trauma, the behavior you adapt. It becomes a maladaptive response.” [28:38] “If you look beyond the straight lines out to nature, it’s chaos! There’s so much beauty in that chaos and it’s in cycles. There’s death and then there is rebirth and there are all these renewals. The stuff that needs to die, needs to die.” [32:18] “It wasn’t about crushing or conquering cancer, it was about learning to love myself. It was learning to forgive myself.” [39:55] “The toxicity we create from ourselves is so much more potent than what we have to filter from outside.” [41:19]   In This Episode Why different people have unique reactions to the same drugs in Western medicine [9:30] How past traumas can manifest as chronic illness [13:00] Why you should reduce sugar in your regular diet [15:00] How you can start looking at your past traumas so you can heal your current health problems [22:00] How your brain processes and holds onto trauma from your childhood [26:30] How much energy you might be spending to hold on to past hurts and traumas [44:00] Why you should start talking to and listening to what your body is trying to tell you [53:00]   Links & Resources Check out the full show notes for this episode here Take the Your Longevity Blueprint Course Use code breasthealth for 15% off DIM and Iodine this month!   When most people think of marketing, they think about promotion—pushing out your message to people and hoping they’ll decide to buy. But who wants to be “marketed” to anymore? Instead, what if we thought of marketing as connecting? For this week’s Real Food Brands Marketing Podcast, host and Food & Beverage Brand Strategist Katie Mleziva lays out a 6-step framework for the journey our end consumers go through – from when they first hear about your product to deciding to buy it, try it, buy it again, and (hopefully) recommend it to others. We look at all of this through the lens of connecting: creating a two-way conversation with consumers that gets them just as engaged as you are. In This Episode:  Why we need to shift our mindset about marketing to think broadly, and from simply promoting to actually connecting. How to think about marketing as a two-way conversation throughout the consumer lifecycle.  How to overcome the skepticism people might have when they first hear about a new brand. Creative ideas for driving trial and getting your product out into the hands of your ideal consumers. Why a purchase is only the first step in your long-term relationship with your consumer. How to turn a first-time purchaser into a repeat buyer and eventually one of the biggest fans of your brand who tells their friends.  How a clear brand strategy can your products find their way into more carts. Taking a holistic approach to your health means looking at your mental, emotional, spiritual, physical, and nutritional health. I’m joined by wellness coach Sarah Anne Stewart to talk about how she encourages holistic health with her clients. She also shares some great tips on increasing your overall wellness! Key Takeaways Some quick exercises you can start doing that will help you heal your mental and emotional health and your relationship with your body. Practicing daily affirmations Getting involved in Mirror Work Writing a letter to our body About Sarah Anne Stewart Sarah Anne Stewart discovered the world of wellness as a teenager when her father received a terminal cancer diagnosis. Her family made a choice – to fight back with alternative medicine. Seven months later, her father was cancer-free, and a spark was lit in Sarah that propelled her to dedicate her life to spreading the healings her family had discovered.  Today, as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach (AADP), Sarah runs a leading private coaching practice with a focus on breaking free of diet culture through mindfulness. Her heart-centered approach has supported hundreds on their journeys to body love.  Sarah is the founder of the Awesome Inside Out Movement, an advisor to international wellness brands and soon to be Hay House author. Taking the First Steps into Holistic Wellness Sarah starts by sharing the story of when she first ventured into the wellness world. As a professional model, she struggled with what she knew to be true about her diet and lifestyle and actually putting it into practice.  She opens up and shares how she nearly killed herself with anorexia before she finally realized she needs to work on her mental and emotional health, as well as her nutritional and physical, in order to truly heal. This led Sarah on a journey into holistic wellness that included a deep spiritual practice of healing. She found a spiritual teacher who told her that she needs to relearn everything she knew about suffering. Sarah talks about self-sabotaging behavior and how, even when we’re actively trying to change our lives for the better, we can still engage in it. She explains some of the reasons for this and what we can do to stop this behavior. She also shares some mindset tips to change who and what you attract into your life. I love these tips and I think we should apply them often! Comparison is the Number One Barrier to Wellness Sarah suffered from breast implant illness for years. She found herself in a bubble of people who denied this could be happening, but eventually discovered how sick her implants were making her.  Sarah shifts into explaining the mindset behind why people get implants. Social media is often blamed for poor body image issues in young women, but it’s not uncalled for blame. Sarah believes that social media and comparing ourselves to other women is definitely one of the reasons women get implants. She encourages you to go on regular social media detoxes. Other wellness practices Sarah promotes are spending time in nature, writing or repeating affirmations, regular meditation, and engaging in mirror work. One of the ultimate things we need to do in order to heal is to stop comparing ourselves to other people. Comparison doesn’t serve you at all, my friends. It’s time we let go and embrace who we are as our unique, wonderful selves. How is this comparison serving you? How is it keeping you in a place of discomfort? What would happen if you actually let it go? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.   In This Episode Why you need to take a holistic approach to your health that includes your mental and emotional along with your physical and nutritional [7:00] How to unlearn the way you were taught to suffer [12:15] Why we might engage in self-sabotaging behavior [16:15] How to control who you attract into your life based on the thoughts you have [20:00] Some of the symptoms of breast implant illness [25:00] Why it’s important for our mental health to have social media detoxes [29:00] How to reconnect with yourself by connecting to nature and disconnecting from your thoughts [31:00] How to break free from comparing ourselves to other people [35:15]   Quotes “So often, people are reluctant to go beyond the mind because we’re taught more research means that we have a higher IQ and we’re better at coping with the world and we’ll be more successful. But, often, what it really is about is going to the space between the thoughts. It’s going into our awareness.” [13:50] “It’s not about feeling shame or guilt when you do a behavior that’s sabotaging. It’s about creating the self-awareness to recognize that there is a different way and once you know better, you’ll do better. It’s not your fault that you’re sabotaging. But it is your responsibility if you want to live an empowered life in a body that you love.” [17:11] “We all face these different parts of our life where something from our past, an old experience, or even a relationship or career might come forward later in your life. It’s about having the tools to manage what shows up.” [21:04] “The problem is that we’re in this comparison or jealousy model and we’re always on social media, we’re always looking at other people wondering why we can’t look like that. Through the acceptance and surrender, whether it’s the sickness, the not feeling well, the how we look, there is this mourning process that happens. On the other side of that is freedom.” [31:09]   Resources Mentioned Find Sarah Anne Stewart Online Follow Sarah Anne Stewart on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | Pinterest Join the KetoGreen Community on Facebook Buy Keto-Green 16 Check out the full episode page Find Dr. Anna Online Follow Dr. Anna on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter

The way we exercise after we turn 50 absolutely has to include a few essential elements. Strength training and working smarter, not harder, will keep you in tip-top condition! I’m joined by Debra Atkinson, founder of Flipping 50, to talk about keeping fit in your menopausal years. Key Takeaways Exercise smarter by doing shorter workers with bigger impact. [11:40] Prioritize strength training in your workouts to support your body as you enter your middle years [30:00] You should take a longer period of recovery in between strength training sessions. Aim for two sessions a week. [33:00] About Debra Atkinson Wellness Coach and Fitness Expert Debra Atkinson has helped over 150,000 women “flip” their second half with the vitality and energy they want. She’s the bestselling author of You Still Got It, Girl: The After 50 Fitness Formula for Women; Navigating Fitness After 50: Your GPS For Choosing Programs and Professionals You Can Trust; and Hot, Not Bothered.  Debra hosts Flipping 50 TV and the Flipping 50 podcast, an AARP top podcast for 50+ with over 1 million downloads. She is a frequent speaker and TEDx presenter of Everything Women in Menopause Learned About Exercise May Be a Lie.  She has 36 years of fitness experience, is an International fitness presenter for associations including the International Council on Active Aging, IDEA, NSCA, and Athletic Business, and CanFitPro. She’s an American Council on Exercise Subject Matter Expert, and prior Senior Lecturer in Kinesiology at Iowa State University. Debra is also the founder of Flippingfifty.com and creator of the Flipping 50 Fitness Specialist program for fitness professionals. She’s a frequent contributor at HuffPost, ShareCare, and other featured outlets and on the Education Advisory Board for Medfit.org. Why You’ve Been Exercising Wrong Most of Your Life If you’ve been listening to The Girlfriend Doctor podcast for any length of time, you know that research into women’s health, especially in our menopausal years, is severely lacking. Unfortunately, this research is no better when it comes to exercise!  I’m joined by Debra Atkinson to talk about how we can create a sustainable exercise plan that will keep us healthy into our 50s and beyond. Debra explains how she discovered the magic formula of exercise after 50: short, 20-minute bursts of exercise where you really get your heart pumping. It’s about working out smarter and harder, not longer. Debra explains what types of exercise menopausal women should be focusing on. We both understand that we’re taught to think that sit-ups and crunches are the keys to a flat and toned stomach. The truth is, these types of exercises that take us into a forward flexion are actually detrimental to our health.  Instead, we should focus on exercises like planks that work on bracing your core. Debra walks us through a simple exercise that helps us learn what it should feel like to engage our core. What Kind of Exercise You Should Do After 50 Debra shares how, as a society, we’ve lost the regular daily exercise of yesteryear. Her mother says she doesn’t regret exercising more in her life because the hard daily labor of working on a farm kept her fit and healthy. These changes are why it’s vital for us to keep exercising well into our old age. The types of exercise we should really focus on are foot movement and flexibility and strength training. Both of these will help us as we age; foot movement is beneficial for helping us move quicker, especially if we have a trip or a fall. Strength training will help our entire body and mind, and Debra explains why. When it comes to refueling our bodies after a workout, Debra lets us know exactly when and what type of food we should be consuming. There really is a specific time period where refueling does us best. She shares her favorite post-workout food and talks about other options if you’re not a smoothie person. Finally, Debra encourages you to create a workout routine you can stick to. It should include two strength sessions, three harder 20-minute sessions, and as many walks as you want every week. She also talks about recovery time between sessions and how you can adapt your routine if you don’t feel up to a workout. Are you ready to reclaim your health and fitness after 50? What’s your favorite type of exercise? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.   In This Episode Why the research into women’s health and fitness is lacking [6:00] Why short workouts are the best way to get your exercise in [11:00] Why you should focus on bracing your core with exercise like planks rather than focusing on forwarding flexion with exercises like sit-ups [16:00] A straightforward exercise that engages your core muscles [18:00] How our cultural lifestyle has changed so we don’t get as much daily exercise as we used to [24:00] Why you should focus on exercises that move your feet in different directions [28:00] When and what you should eat after your workout [36:25] How to plan your workout routine that includes flexibility in your schedule and how your body feels [42:00]   Quotes “It’s much more beneficial to do less exercise, just do it with more purpose. That’s what I found with all those months sitting in front of my computer, I was barely exercising for 20 minutes, but when you only have 20 minutes, you make every minute count.” [11:11] “You’ve got to fill this hole up that you’ve dug yourself into. You have to feel good before you can feel great. Restoring before more so that you’ve got the energy to actually do the exercise and you’re looking forward to it, not dreading it.” [24:20] “If you have a more active life overall, remember that you’re exercising so that you can play more in life. Have you ever been told to embrace self-love, when it seems like the most impossible thing in the world? The idea of self-love can lead to the cognitive dissonance that results in many of us giving up on our goals altogether. Instead of feeling ashamed at not being able to love your body, I argue that body respect and body neutrality are much more attainable and positive goals. Key Takeaways If You Want To Learn How To Respect Your Body You Have Too: Give yourself basic care and dignity Find clothes that fit your body right now comfortably Challenge yourself to stop body comparing Why Self Love Is the Wrong End Goal The concept of loving yourself is a wonderful idea. But for those of us who have come from or are currently in a state where we hate our bodies because we are stuck in the cycle and influence of diet culture, we blame ourselves and the concept of love feels incredibly foreign. You Deserve To Be Taken Care of as You Are Right Now No matter what society, influencers, and diet culture have taught you to believe, you deserve to be taken care of as you are right now. You deserve the same basic care, basic nourishment, and basic dignity that some people provide more of to their pets than they do to themselves. Get some clothes that fit, stop staring at the scale, and believe that you are worthy of love, respect, and care even if you don’t love yourself as you currently right now. The Problem With Body Comparing Comparing your body, whether it is to a past version of you or to someone else, can only do harm. While respecting the current state of your body isn’t always easy because of the messages sent to us by diet culture, it is only by rejecting the notion that smaller bodies equal better bodies that you can start to appreciate how your body is serving you. Next time you are in a conversation that results in people comparing or shaming other people’s bodies that are nobodies business, I challenge you to remove yourself or stop that conversation in its tracks. While it can be hard to muster up the courage, I promise you will feel better for it. Are you ready to replace self-love with body respect and start treating your body with the dignity and care it deserves? You can do this, I promise. Let me know your thoughts about Intuitive Eating Principle 8 in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode Why the idea of body respect is more attainable than the idea of self-love for many of us (7:40) The importance of support when learning about and implementing intuitive eating (10:48) Tips for distancing yourself from people and places that perpetuate diet culture (12:20) Health-promoting habits that you can engage in that are weight neutral (14:33) How to respect your body by wearing clothes that suit it right now (18:02) Why you need to stop comparing your body and stop being the hero (23:45)   Quotes “Intuitive Eating is not a new concept, it has been around for a long time. And humans are innately intuitive eaters so this isn’t just some other diet.’ (2:58) “I wish that the idea of body neutrality and body respect was in my lexicon, was something I had learned about, even back then. Because I think it would have been a much faster stepping stone to get to the point where I was more comfortable with my body.” (8:45) “We don’t want to make wellness another set of boxes to tick, but really making it fit for your life and doing the best you can right now. So maybe that means talking to somebody about your struggles, maybe that means getting out and moving your body in a way that feels really good for you. But coming back to basic care and dignity.” (15:41) “You deserve to be taken care of and you deserve to care for yourself right now.” (16:56) “The more we stop this constant body comparison, the easier it is for us to respect our bodies.” (27:27)   Links Join the Listen To Your Body Newsletter LTYB 288: How To Ditch Dieting (Intuitive Eating Principle 1) LTYB 289: Honoring Your Hunger (Intuitive Eating Principle 2) LTYB 292: Make Peace With Food (Intuitive Eating Principle #3) LTYB 293: Challenging The Food Police (Intuitive Eating Principle 4) LTYB 296: 3 Ways to Make Eating More Satisfying (Intuitive Eating Principle 5) LTYB 297: 3 Ways to Honor Your Body’s Fullness (Intuitive Eating Principle 6) LYTB 300: 4 Questions to Ask About Emotional Eating (Intuitive Eating Principle 7) Check out the full show notes here! Grief is one of the most difficult emotions for humans to process. I’m joined by grief therapist, Deb Antinori, to talk about how you can support yourself with brainspotting, a technique designed to ground and calm yourself. Key Takeaways: Identify what feels good, comfortable, or at least “less bad” in your body, then avert your gaze and try to return to a state of homeostasis. [26:00] Be gentle with yourself right now. The world is going through a collective trauma, so cut yourself some slack. [34:00] About Deb Antinori Deborah Antinori, MA, LPC, FT, RDT is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 29 years in private practice. She is a Brainspotting Trainer and Certified Consultant. She has been using Brainspotting since its inception in 2003 as she met the developer of Brainspotting, David Grand, in the late ’90s when he was her supervisor for her private practice of therapy. As a grief therapist, Deborah holds her FT, Fellow in Thanatology, from the Association for Death Education and Counseling. She authored a chapter on Grief and Brainspotting in The Power of Brainspotting: An International Anthology. Deborah is the author and narrator of the double award-winning audiobook, Journey Through Pet Loss. (Audie Award - Audio Publishers Association, ForeWord Book of the Year Award – Silver) She is a master's graduate of NYU’s Drama Therapy Dept. Originally an actress, she earned her BFA from the Boston Conservatory of Music and is still in the professional actor’s unions, AEA and SAG/AFTRA. She has begun work on a Ph.D. through the International University for Graduate Studies and is hoping to be able to get to Innsbruck for an EEG study with her mentor, Damir DelMonte, Ph.D., on Brainspotting for her Ph.D. when the travel bans lift. Grief Is Difficult Whether It’s a Pet or a Loved One Deb joins me to talk about the intersection of grief and brainspotting. Grief is one of the most difficult emotions for humans to process, regardless of whether it’s from the death of a loved one, a pet, or a different experience of loss. One of Deb’s specialties is working with people who have lost a pet. The death of our pets impacts many of us just as hard, if not harder than the loss of a loved one.  We all know how good it feels to sit and cuddle with our pets when times are tough. That sense of comfort and wholeness gets so many of us through difficult times. That’s one of the biggest reasons losing a pet is difficult. Deb explains what stages of grief look like when our pets die; they’re not altogether dissimilar to when we lose a loved one. Deb talks us through a practice we can use when we’re settling into our feelings of grief. She explains how this practice can help calm us down. It’s called brainspotting, and Deb has been using it since 2003. How Brainspotting Helps You Process Brainspotting helps you process difficult information and return to a state of calm. The three stages brainspotting helps guide you through are survival, homeostasis, and restoration. Our brains are at their best when they’re in homeostasis and restoration. In this episode, Deb actually guides us through the brainspotting process. We take a few minutes to guide ourselves into the right space and sitting, breathing, and feeling our brains return to homeostasis. Just like every new technique, brainspotting is something you need to consistently practice in order for it to have a positive benefit on your life and mental health. When you use it regularly, you’ll have a much easier time of returning to that state of calm. Finally, I really just want to give you permission to be kind to yourself. 2020 has been hard for all of us and it’s absolutely okay if you’re experiencing feelings of grief and overwhelm. I hope that Deb’s advice and brainspotting technique can help you return to your own natural state of homeostasis. Do something to get yourself out of your comfort zone. Collage, dance, chase your dog, watch a new series on Netflix. Get out there so you can get back into your zone. As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.   In This Episode: Why we feel so good when we’re cuddling with our pets [5:30] The stages of grief when we lose a pet [6:30] A quick practice we can use when we’re experiencing moments of grief [12:00] What brainspotting is and how you can use it for yourself [14:45] What happens when you bring your brain back into homeostasis and restoration [17:50] A simple technique to help you return to a state of calmness [24:00] Why you need to practice brain spotting to strengthen your mastery of it [30:00] Why you need to be gentle yourself during these huge times of global trauma and existentialism [34:00]   Quotes: “Moving with the feeling in the moment is the best way to help things move in a direction where you can get to the better feelings in time about the wonderful memories.” [12:02] “Each person will do brainspotting differently. They’ll find a way that works for them. Some people find the spot immediately, some other people struggle: that’s where we say, ‘just guess.’ Because, when you guess, you’re using your subcortical brain, and that’s what we really look at in the brain spotting.” [28:46] “Just have an appreciation for what your core brain and system is trying to put together. Be gentle with yourself and don’t expect yourself to be perfect. Don’t put that extra stress on yourself at this time when there are a lot of trauma signals.” [34:24]   Resources Mentioned Learn more about Brainspotting Find Deb Antinori Online You can email Deb Antinori at dantinori@gmail.com Join the KetoGreen Community on Facebook Buy Keto-Green 16 Check out the full episode page Find Dr. Anna Online Follow Dr. Anna on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter

Navigating Our Terrain
Why Working Through Ancestral Trauma Is the Key To Healing w/ Karen M. Rose

Navigating Our Terrain

As a society, we’ve lost much of the healing knowledge that our ancestors held. With that loss, combined with corporate greed, has come a fear of herbal medicine. Karen M. Rose joins me to talk about how the Divine Feminine is rising, ancient medicine is finally coming back, and why you need to heal your spirit. Karen says we need to rediscover how to trust ourselves, unlearning all the years of corporate propaganda that have been embedded into our minds. When we’re ready to expand ourselves, we will feel more comfortable exploring ancient medicines as an alternative to modern, and in my opinion last resort, medicines. Regardless of where your medicine comes from, true healing comes from within yourself. And with the global rise of the Divine Feminine, we’re seeing mass healing on a bigger scale than ever before. But for many women, especially black women, we need to deal with ancestral trauma that’s been passed down through our lineage. What modern medicine is missing is the language of wellness. Modern medicine treats the symptoms but it doesn’t look at the root cause or the health of your spirit. We’ve truly disconnected from the spirit of the earth and are only now finding our way back. Karen believes that we all need to celebrate and feel our joy every single day. Even when you’re fighting the good fight, sad about the state of the world, or whatever other negative emotions are swirling around in you. When you embrace joy, you embrace life… and you should always strive to be that calming and joyful model for others, as Karen is every day. For Karen, our spirit is the most important aspect of ourselves to heal. There is a connection between illness and spirit; you can’t heal only one, and you might find that when you’re healing your spirit, you’re also healing your illness and trauma. How are you finding and celebrating joy every day? How have you connected to your spirit today? I’d love if you shared your thoughts in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode: Why we’ve developed a fear of herbal medicine Where healing comes from How the emergence of the Divine Feminine is healing the world What does it look like to have ancestral trauma in your lineage How modern medicine has ignored the language of wellness Why you need to stay connected to joy, especially through difficult times How you can be a model for joy and relaxation for others What the connection between illness and spirit is How you can show up in both your trauma and your joy   Quotes: “I find that our language in the West is designed to create a separation between ancient medicine and people. So, of course, if we think of it as something alternative or something that is next to normal, we have a harder time using it.” (6:34) “The more healed you become the more you see what you need to heal.” (15:22) “We’re going to delve into all the ways in which plants work in this body but also all the ways in which plants work in the spirit. They cannot be separated from what’s going on around you spiritually and emotionally.” (41:26)   Links Find the full episode post here Find Karen M. Rose Online Follow Karen M. 4 Questions to Ask About Emotional Eating (Intuitive Eating Principle 7)

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2020 22:41

Intuitive Eating Principle 7 is all about emotional eating. Why do we eat when our stress levels are up? What can we do to step away from the cupboard and only eat when we’re actually hungry? Let’s talk about the four questions you need to ask yourself. Key Takeaways The Four Questions to Ask Yourself About Emotional Eating: Is your hunger physical or emotional in nature? [13:06] How are you generally feeling? [15:45] What is the need you’re having in that moment or what is the boundary? [16:23] How can you fulfill that need or express that boundary without turning to food? [19:20] About Emotional Eating Emotional eating is something that most people on this planet are familiar with. When you’re not sure if you’re hungry for food, but there’s this emptiness inside or uneasiness that makes you reach for something. I have absolutely been there. You’re so not alone! Here are four questions you need to ask yourself when you think you might be eating emotionally. Why We Eat Emotionally As with almost anything we do, there are deep-rooted reasons why we do what we do. Emotional eating is no different. One of the biggest reasons we turn to food is because of stress! For some people, comfort eating is the only way they know how to navigate stressful feelings or any other number of emotions. So when this is the only mechanism you have, of course, you’re going to turn to it more often. Honestly, and I want to stress this, saying that you’re never going to emotionally eat again is not realistic. There will be times you eat when you’re not hungry! Plus, food has so much more significance in our lives than just curbing hunger. You are not a failure if you turn to food to navigate your life right now. Four Questions to Ask About Emotional Eating What we’re talking about today is how you can start recognizing the different types of hunger in your body. Hunger for nourishment feels different than hunger from loneliness or stress. But if you’ve never learned to tell the difference between these feelings, it can be hard to start. I’ve broken down the four questions you should ask yourself when you reach for food. Check-in with your body. Is your hunger physical or emotional? How are you feeling in general? Really get in tune with your emotions, here. What need are you having right now? What is the boundary that you’re coming up against? And finally, how can you fulfill that need without turning to food? Build up your arsenal of other ways you can work through your emotions that don’t involve food. Whether it’s journaling, going for a walk, calling your best friend, or something else, I’d love it if you let me know in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode Why it’s not realistic to say you’ll never eat emotionally again [7:35] How the different types of hunger manifest in your body [13:30] The four questions you need to ask yourself about emotional eating [14:00] How setting boundaries can help you handle your emotional eating [18:30]   Quotes “Stress can drive us to use food to fill emotional needs.” [6:54] “In times of high stress, for some people, comforting or finding safety and security in food is the only mechanism that they have or they know.” [8:32] “Food is more than just energy. Food can be an emotional, cultural, social, or religious experience.” [12:15] “Getting more clarity on how you feel, not just the sensations in your body, which can be a very helpful stepping stone, but emotionally, how do you feel? Different people have different amounts of access to this at any one given point.” [15:54]   Links Join the Listen To Your Body Newsletter National Eating Disorder Association Free Assessment LTYB 288: How To Ditch Dieting (Intuitive Eating Principle 1) LTYB 289: Honoring Your Hunger (Intuitive Eating Principle 2) LTYB 292: Make Peace With Food (Intuitive Eating Principle #3) LTYB 293: Challenging The Food Police (Intuitive Eating Principle 4) LTYB 296: 3 Ways to Make Eating More Satisfying (Intuitive Eating Principle 5) LTYB 297: 3 Ways to Honor Your Body’s Fullness (Intuitive Eating Principle 6) Check out the full show notes here! And I want to help more people take their chances without even having to be on death’s door.” (5:30) “To eat real, whole, natural, sustainable food, is actually revolutionary. It actually takes being radical and transforming the norms. Because our convenience foods, our fast foods, our school foods, our hospital foods, are all serving what quite frankly is food-like substances.” (11:10) “Wherever you stand and whatever your health history is it's going to have an impact on what’s right for you. But broadly speaking, in the broad terms of things, we can see that eating a diet that is based around more plants and more whole foods is going to be beneficial for the vast majority of humanity.” (22:02) “I think love is a great place to start. Because when we love, we have a reason to live. And when we have a reason to live, then suddenly we care for ourselves, and we care for our loved ones, and we care for life.” (28:24) “Everybody deserves love, that’s the bottom line. And with food is a wonderful place to express that, because everybody eats. And so I get the beautiful opportunity in my work to share about healthy eating with everybody.”(32:37) “I want to see a world where food is taken seriously, where the food industry takes health seriously, and where science guides the choices that people are encouraged to make around food, not industry profits.” (43:17)   Links Food Revolution Network Website Diet for a New America by John Robbins Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook | Instagram

Using Strategic Partnerships To Fast Track Business Growth (Online Trainer Show #30) There are right and wrong ways to begin a podcast, and the gang has it down to a science: Overpriced Starbucks drinks, social media stalking, and Googling yourself. Today, they discuss what to look for in a partnership, the biggest mistake to avoid at all costs, and stories that illustrate how to utilize true engagement to generate business. So many people are too afraid to make that first call, but if they push through those trepidations, they could forge partnerships that transform their business. Don’t sell yourself for less than a mango dragon fruit drink —make that first call. In This Episode: Why it’s important that you’re not too similar to your partner [16:24] Why you shouldn’t work with someone just because you like them [18:39] The value of training influencers for free to get your foot in the door [28:08] How to utilize true influencers and succeed in an influencer’s economy [30:07] The difference between engagement and following [32:43] How essential it is to narrow down your choices before you deep dive [35:47] Why you should focus on a specific demographic [36:33] Carolina emphasizes not selling yourself short [40:16] You could be the first person to connect with someone, so always take that first step [42:11]   “We’re so fixated on followers but engagement is where the money is.”- Ren Jones   I’m Your Partner, Not Your Friend A pivotal mistake that so many fall into is partnering with someone only because they like them. Sure, you need to have great chemistry with someone, but if you two are too similar, you won’t complement each other and ultimately fall into the same habits. Instead, create a partnership where the one fills in for the other’s weaknesses, and you will reach a mutual goal together.   Engagement Vs. Followers Working with influencers is critical to expanding your business, but so many “influencers” are focused solely on follower count and do little except sell products or a personality. If you work with people who are experts in their field and wish to spread information, your business’s engagement will multiply and impact so many more people in a significant way.   Make That First Call Taking the first step is the hardest—that leap of faith that puts the pressure on high. Too many entrepreneurs hesitate to reach out because of their own insecurities or reluctance to try something new. Putting yourself out there is undeniably frightening, but if you can stop selling yourself short and make that first call, you could bridge a connection that changes your life.   SPONSORS   Get started TODAY with the world-leading certification and business development program for personal trainers, nutrition coaches, and gym owners – The Online Trainer Academy: https://onlinetrainer.com/academy   Enjoy this special offer of 60 days FREE on PT Distinction from The Online Trainer Show! - https://onlinetrainer.com/ptd   YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JonGoodmanPTDC

By creating community and nurturing our innate sense of curiosity, we can improve our health and increase our longevity. I’m joined by the remarkable Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum, who started her Functional Medicine Coaching business at the age of 65, about how finding your passion, purpose, and community has helped her stay young and vibrant when others around her are slowing down.   About Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum As the founder and CEO of the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, a collaboration with The Institute for Functional Medicine, Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum is a leader in the field of health coaching education.  A clinical psychologist for over 35 years, she is an expert in blending relaxation techniques with cognitive-behavior therapy, taught the psychology of eating and mind-body medicine courses, and ran clinics for treating attention deficit disorders, panic, and anxiety. Dr. Sandi is the author of Functional Medicine Coaching, Stop Panic Attacks in 10 Easy Steps, and How to Give Clients the Skills to Stop Panic Attacks.   Create Community and Passion for Longevity I’m so excited to have Dr. Sandi join me today to talk about why she started her business to train new functional medicine coaches. We both believe that for any of us to live a long and healthy life, we need to embrace functional medicine. Yes, conventional medicine has its place in our healthcare, but we need to look at more than just treatment: it’s about prevention, too. Part of what Sandra’s focuses on as she’s aged is making sure her life always has meaning. When you focus on finding your passion and purpose and actively embracing this as you grow older, you give yourself an extra reason to keep on living. Sandi encourages you to find your passion. It doesn’t have to be something huge and world-changing, though it absolutely can be. As long as you find something that gives you a reason to get up in the morning, even knitting hats, sewing masks, or growing tomatoes, you’re helping yourself live a longer life. Community is also a must-have for everyone, regardless of where you are in life. Even in these times of lockdown and quarantine, having some kind of daily connection is essential. Sandi explains how even a virtual connection can give you that sense of community that you might be missing. Sandra provides some very tangible ideas for how we can keep creating connections and growing our communities as we age. Some great examples are to find a hobby you’re interested in, join a new exercise class, or get involved in your local church group.   How to Nurture Our Emotions to Live Longer Sandra shares some beautiful emotions we should all learn to embrace and nurture. When we take the time to feel our feelings, instead of pushing them to the back of our minds, we learn to appreciate all life has to offer. Her favorite emotion to embrace is curiosity. We all know how to be curious, we’ve learned this from the time we were born and first exploring the world around us. By sustaining that excitement to take it all in, you’re signaling to your brain that there’s so much more to keep living for. Curiosity isn’t the only emotion that keeps you young and health. Dr. Sandi shares what other traits we should embrace and why. From laughter and joy to anger and sadness, by feeling every feeling on the spectrum we can absolutely keep our minds young and jubilant. Finally, Dr. Sandi shares some practical ways that you can help reduce any anxiety you’re experiencing. Anxiety is one of the emotions we want to keep to a minimum, even though there is a very valid reason for our bodies to experience it. By learning how to signal to your body that the danger has passed, we can increase our longevity. What is your passion and purpose as you transition into this stage of your life? How can you create that sense of community connection every day? What have you been the most curious about in the last week? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!   Key Takeaways You can find your purpose and meaning when you dedicate your life to serving your communities, whatever that looks like for you. It wasn’t until he met Heather, a licensed chiropractor, that he began to understand the power of natural and holistic medicine. Together they have grown as a couple and as doctors, and are here today to open your eyes to the possibility of holistic practices.  Creating a healthier lifestyle is very simple with natural remedies and tenants. Now is the time for the health revolution that you can take into your own hands, and thanks to doctors like Doctor Jack and Doctor Heather, this new way of thinking is becoming a reality.  Jack and Heather believe that the foundation of everyone’s healthcare should be chiropractic care, responsible paleo, and living ancestrally to achieve optimal health. Their goal is to improve your quality of life while arming you with the knowledge necessary to raise healthy and successful children. It is time to wake up to the lies and corruption that is prominent in conventional medicine and start to question your healthcare so that you can protect you and your family’s health.  Are you ready to take charge of your own health and embrace the ability to act preventatively with holistic medicine? Share how you are using your body as a tool to regain your health in the comments on the episode page.    In This Episode Why pharmaceuticals are not the answer when it comes to cardiovascular health The two most important factors and causes when it comes to heart disease How to embrace responsible and conscious paleo to help you feel healthier overall  Things you can do without a fancy gym membership to live ancestrally Red flags to look out for when it comes to conventional medicine bandaids    Quotes “I realized that I was being raised differently than the majority of the world, but I knew that it was normal and the right way to be raised… and I never got tired of it and I had this burning desire to follow in those footsteps and help other children grow up the way I did.” (5:01) - Heather “We just don’t get that there is a reason that we develop a disease. And it’s not because we lack pharmaceuticals or we lack a stint or we lack a surgery, there is a reason for it. And those of us who have awakened to the fact that there is a reason for it are really going to be changing what is going on in the world.” (10:12) - Jack “I learned a lot through our transition together. I think we grew together as a couple and became even healthier and stronger from what we have studied together.” (25:54) - Heather “Whatever you bring into your house, is it natural or not? Is it harmful? Leave it out of the house! Don’t bring it in, that’s how we are going to change the world.’ (31:54) - Jack “This isn’t the 1970’s for example. This isn’t walk into your doctor’s office, tell them the problem, the doctor writes the prescription, the patient doesn’t ask questions and goes on their way. This is the 21st century, this is the information age, this is the internet, this is books, this is doctors like Doctor Heather and I, where people can get this information. They can find out the truth, and they can start to make a difference.” (41:41) - Jack “You know you are in the right office when you walk out with nutritional supplements, with the right foods, and you are armed with the education on how to heal your children.” (48:22) - Heather “Cardiologists make a lot of money. And I walked away from all of that to do the right thing, I walked away from all of that to make a difference. And I did it because I fundamentally wanted to be able to look my children in the eye and say ‘I did the right thing. I didn’t do it for the money, I did it for you kids, I did it for the children of the world, to make this difference and take a stand’.” (51:55) - Jack   Links Find Jack & Heather on their website Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook | Instagram

How To Use Money To Buy A Happier Life (Online Trainer Show #23)   Today’s episode is something a little bit different. While Jonathan is away, OTS shares a recording he made of his favorite essay on money. Why is this important? Making money can often cost you in terms of stress and overall well-being. Yet, you need money to live. In this essay, Jonathan shares some hard truths about what money means. Will more of it really make you that much happier? He breaks down the definitions of money vs wealth so you can better understand your life’s principles. Finally, he shares some honest advice about living a life of joy and meaning. This is a special episode that shouldn’t be missed.   In This Episode: Why money is a taboo subject in our society [0:33)] What is money good for – and what isn’t it good for? [1:07] The Notorious B.I.G. famously said, “Mo’ money, mo’ problems,” and research suggests he wasn’t wrong [2:01] Why you should focus on doing work that’s important and energizing [3:57] How to improve your life with the money that you have [6:04] Do you suffer from “hedonic adaptation?” [7:35] Advice for increasing the length and quality of your life [9:44]   “Dysfunctional attitudes toward money—from overspending to false economies and scarcity thinking—don’t just hurt business growth. They detract from happiness.” - Jonathan Goodman   Money Can’t Buy Happiness Studies show that past a certain threshold, money doesn’t make you that much happier. Why? Consider what $10,000 means to a rich person versus what it means to a poor person. Then consider the tradeoff of working harder to make more money versus learning to be happy with the money you already have.   Money is Meant to Be Used You wouldn’t buy a hammer and never use it, right? Consider money as a tool. Stop comparing yourself to others and figure out your life’s guiding principles. Then spend money there.   Remove Yourself From the “Hedonistic Treadmill” Jonathan not only shares the 5 Principles of Joy, but he explains how he applies them to his own life. In this way, he doesn’t feel the need to make more money. He’s happy with the money he has because he’s not always thinking about what’s next.

Lots is going on in the world right now. To be strong and a person of impact, you need to protect your space and be on guard towards letting negativity in. That means limiting the news and social media. In This Episode: Why you should stop watching negative news. How the media is altering what you see for numbers Making the conscious choice to show up and impact change. Converting negative energy into positive Key Takeaways Be mindful of what you allow into your space. Negativity can be consuming. Positivity will impact change. Tweetable Quotes: “You're not in a position to impact change. If you're just absorbing all the negativity.” “You cannot be consumed by the darkness. You have to show up in the world as your best self.” “Negative news is draining your energy. And you are not showing up into the world, as empowered as you need to, to really impact change.” “I need to show up strong and empowered as a leader within my business as just a human in the world. And that means transforming negative situations into positivity.” ~~~ Hi, I’m Jeremy Sherk - entrepreneur, speaker, world traveler, and health nut. To add insult to injury, I racked up $100K in debt due to some bad business decisions and an unsustainable lifestyle. Do you feel like the luckiest person in the world? If not, why not? Learn how you can create more luck in your life by following these practices shared by my guests, Gay Hendricks and Carol Kline, authors of Conscious Luck. About Gay Hendricks and Carol Kline Gay Hendricks, Ph.D., has served for more than forty years as one of the major contributors to the fields of relationship transformation and body-mind therapies. He is a New York Times bestselling author and his books include Conscious Loving and The Big Leap. Carol Kline has devoted her career to teaching, writing, and speaking about consciousness and personal growth. She is the #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of Happy for No Reason, Love for No Reason, five books in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Together, they wrote Conscious Luck: Eight Secrets to Intentionally Change Your Fortune. About This Episode This episode was an absolute joy to record. Speaking with and learning from Gay and Carol about what luck actually is and how to manifest more of it in your life was enlightening. First of all, they break down why exactly luck isn’t just about luck. You’re likely familiar with the phrase, “you make your own luck.” And it’s true - to an extent. Luck is about being open to the great abundance of the universe coupled with living a joyful and grateful life. So how can you increase the luck in your life? Gay and Carol share about the luck factor and some of the ways you can improve this in your daily existence.  One of the major aspects of improving your luck is to adopt a radical gratitude practice. They don’t mean you should force gratitude when you can’t see anything to be grateful for, but to try to look for something you can be grateful for in any situation.  By looking for things you can be grateful for, you actually train your brain to be more positive and see the good more often than not. Gay and Carol explain why this practice increases your luck - it’s all about raising your overall vibration. Gay and Carol talk about other ways you can increase your luck: creating a luck-worthy goal. When you have a goal in mind that not only elevates you but other people, the universe will help you out. Another aspect of this is how much goodness comes when your head is in line with your heart’s desire to do good. Lastly, Gay and Carol share some practices we can adopt today so we can start achieving our lucky goals. These are simple ways that help change our mindset into one more open and willing to accept luck and the joyful abundance of the universe. Are you ready to create your own luck? What are you grateful for today? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.   In This Episode: Why luck isn’t just a matter of luck How you can improve the luck factor in your life Why you need to be open to receive support from the Universe How the power of radical gratitude can lift your vibration and increase your luck What makes a luck-worthy goal What happens when your heart and your mind are in alignment Some practices we can adopt to start achieving our lucky goals   Quotes: “It really begins with an act of your willingness and your commitment to be a luckier person every day.” (11:17) “What I think we’ve got to do is make your life an opening for magical things to happen. Because why not? What have you got to lose? Open yourself up to more magic and miracles and the appearance of spontaneous good things in your life.” (14:39) “Luck is like a wind that’s blowing all the time. There is a good chance that you have should’s and shouldn’t, do’s and don’ts, and a myriad of voices in your head telling you what to think when it comes to what you are putting in your mouth. The negative thoughts that come out regarding all of the rules you have around food are not serving you, but don’t worry, there is another way. How To Respond To These Food Police Tendencies With Purpose When you internalize foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, you can wind up creating emotions and actions that are not in line with how you truly want to feel about food. Negative emotional habits can impact the way in which you see the world, experience relationships, and express yourself. While it may be something you or your partner is subconsciously adopting, it can have a serious impact on your ability to solve issues and cope with stress.  This is why I have asked Dr. Steven Stosny to share with us his research in the power of compassion and emotional habits. An author of several books including How To Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It and Love Without Hurt, Dr. Stosny is an expert in using the most profound part of your brain so that you can understand your stress and work to develop compassion as the cornerstone of your emotional blueprint.  Compassion gives you the endorphins you need to stop feeding off of anger and start understanding the negative reactivity in your relationships. Instead of letting your ‘toddler brain’ win by using blame, denial, or avoidance, Dr. Stosny is here to provide you with ways that you can improve, appreciate, connect or protect in order to make whatever situation you are in better.  By getting in touch with your core values you can learn to fall in love with your adult brain and in turn, spread kindness to those struggling with resentment. If you or someone you love is struggling with anger, resentment, and stress, Dr. Stonsy’s knowledge will be invaluable on your journey towards peace. If you are looking to prevent regret through compassion, this is the episode for you.  How are you working to be more compassionate to yourself and your loved ones? Share your story with us in the comments on the episode page.    In This Episode Why you default to your ‘toddler brain’ when you are stressed and what to do about it Understand gender difference in the way that we relate to each other in relationships How to use compassion to heal resentment, anger, and other negative emotions Discover the science behind why anger can be addictive and resentment can be contagious  First steps that you can take if you or someone you love has an anger problem    Quotes “If your emotional habits are bad, you are just seeing the world through a tunnel vision. Emotions are how we react to each other and how we know the world, so we better get them right!” (7:16) “We do need to be happy on our own, but together we can make something better than what we can do on our own, and that’s harmony.” (10:43) “Resentment becomes part of your defensive system, it becomes part of the way you negotiate your world. It’s more than just a feeling, it is a way of looking at life when it gets entrenched as it goes on. It’s worse than fear of change.” (31:09) “When you are hurt or you are emotionally aroused, it is almost impossible to see other people’s perspectives. So in a relationship when the people are hurting each other, it gets harder and harder to see each other’s perspectives. And that’s not just true for emotional pain. If you have a headache, it is hard for you to sympathize with someone’s toothache, between your pain is seizing your whole conscious intention, that is what it is supposed to do… when you are hurt it is motivating you to do something about your hurt, so you can’t see the other persons hurt.” (35:41) “When your self-value is lowered, you have to do something that makes you feel more valued, more loveable. Not more powerful. Because it’s not a power problem, its a value problem.” (41:29) “Your only chance of getting the partner you most want to have is to be the partner you most want to be.” (50:04)   Links Compassion Power Website Download the Free Core Value Workbook Here Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook | Instagram

Fasting has incredible benefits for your body and your spiritual health. Fasting can also help you heal many long-term medical conditions. I’m joined by Dr. Daniel Pompa, an expert in cellular health, to talk all about fasting. About Dr. Daniel Pompa Dr. Daniel Pompa earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Life University’s College of Chiropractic in Marietta, Georgia in 1995 where he graduated second in a class of 150. His journey back to health continued to lead him to a voracious passion to research and learning beyond what is often readily understood. Daniel explains that our bodies are capable and built to fast. For centuries, our bodies have faced food shortages that they’ve had to survive through. The truth is that our bodies thrive and heal when we fast for any period of time. Fasting can transform your health. Daniel shares some personal stories of how fasting has helped cure his son’s skin condition and how Cameron George’s body innately knew how to heal itself through a fast. He encourages you to listen to Cameron’s full story in his podcast episode, How to Biohack your Fasts with Cameron George. There are so many different ways that you can fast. Daniel explains how you can start with a partial fast, one that lasts a day or two, to help you transition into his preferred fast - the 5 day fast. Daniel also details out what exactly happens to your body during a fast and why they’re so beneficial for everyone to do. If you’ve never done any kind of fast before, it can be a daunting experience to approach. Daniel helps to ease your fears by explaining what you should expect to feel during a fast. From initial hunger pains, perhaps some unexpected body aches, and then the clarity of mind and body that comes. Another type of fast we talk about is a dry fast - where you drink no water for the duration of your fast. There are two types: a hard dry fast and a soft dry fast. The difference between a soft and hard dry fast is that while undertaking a hard dry fast you don’t even shower as your body can absorb the water through your skin! Finally, we discuss the spiritual links to fasting. Most religions observe some type of fasting and there are many spiritual benefits to the practice. Daniel explains that the process of fasting brings your mind clarity and often results in mental, emotional, and sometimes physical breakthroughs. Have you ever participated in a fast? How often will you include fasting in your year? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com. In This Episode: Why we’re programmed to fast How fasting can transform your health What a partial fast is and how it helps you transition to a full fast What happens to your body during a fast What you should expect to feel during a fast How you do a hard and a soft dry fast What the spiritual links and benefits of fasting are Quotes: “The body gets rid of bad cells. We’re program to fast to get rid of these bad cells. They build up in all of us, they’re called sebaceous cells; cells that live too long.” (15:09) “Not everyone has to do an extended fast. I believe multiple 5-day fasts do the same thing.” (23:27) “When you need a breakthrough, for a family member, for something that you’re looking for in your life, something bigger than you: fast. Because fasting creates breakthroughs.” (37:02) Resources Mentioned Buy Beyond Fasting Book by Dr. Daniel Pompa Listen to Episode 282: How to Biohack your Fasts with Cameron George Find Dr. Daniel Pompa Online Find Dr. Daniel Pompa on Facebook | Pinterest | YouTube | Twitter Join the KetoGreen Community on Facebook Buy Keto-Green 16   Check out the full episode page Find Dr. Anna Online Follow Dr. Anna on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter

Moms, whether you’re parenting single or with a partner, this episode is for you. All the stress that quarantine is bringing us, including being at home with our kids and partner 24/7, is bound to cause some anxiety and tension in the household. I’m thrilled to have Amber Trueblood, author of Stretch Marks, on to talk about how to develop a culture of love and kindness to see us through this difficult time - and beyond. About Amber Trueblood Amber is first and foremost a mother of four boys under the age of 12, then an author and retreat host. She has an MBA, an MFT, and is unequivocally a parenting expert. Her expertise, experience, compassion, and humor result in that perfect unique combination of entertainment and effectiveness. On this episode of The Girlfriend Doctor, Amber starts by telling us why we need to keep track of how often we’re saying “I should” - and to what. Women are often faced with feeling like they “should” be doing something, but in reality, is it necessary? The first step to leveling out your anxiety and increasing your happiness, mama, is to treat yourself with kindness. Amber shares her insights into what she calls your emotional bank account. When your emotional funds are running low, you’re more susceptible to shorter tempers and higher anxiety. Amber talks about some of the ways we can replenish our emotional bank account. Next, Amber explains a few techniques to connect with your family through gratitude, appreciation, and growing as individuals. When we acknowledge who our family is, our connection with them grows, even between siblings, and paves the way for greater acceptance. Amber also tells us why it’s so important to share with your children how you’re feeling and what you’re experiencing. On a more practical level, Amber tells us how simple breathing techniques can help us control our anxiety levels. She also gives us the inside scoop on how to stay in the present moment and why this is something we should actively strive to do. Finally, Amber explains what emergency emotional management is and why you need to figure out its role in your life. What makes you happy? What can you do, starting today, to create that loving environment to encourage growth? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com. In This Episode: Why you should keep an eye on your “I shoulds” Why you need to treat yourself with kindness How you can replenish your emotional bank account How you can check-in with your family to really acknowledge who they are Why it’s so important to share with your children how you feel and what you’re experiencing What impact breathing has on your anxiety levels Why you should focus on one moment at a time What role emergency emotional management has in your life Quotes: “Sometimes being kind to ourselves and being honest to ourselves is so important. Let’s maybe not jump to beat ourselves up for situations. 105: Navigating Self-Worth Squalls

Moxielicious with Alexia Vernon

In episode 105, we talk all about the importance of self-worth. What does it mean to have self-worth, and where does it come from? Whether we are an established thought leader or we are rising in our leadership and impact, one of our most important responsibilities to our people is helping them remember the importance of self-worth and navigate through self-worth squalls that come up as they seek to take action on their goals. I refer to self-worth squalls as moments in your life that feel like they have come out of nowhere, and with excessive speed, wind you into a storm – a storm where you question everything you think you know about yourself, your voice, and your power. However, every squall can give us a gift – that’s the importance of self-worth. Given this new, unprecedented moment we are in, we are tasked with helping our clients process their very legitimate fears surrounding our current reality – as well as what life after the COVID-19 pandemic will look like. Amongst COVID-19, the importance of self-worth is as critical as ever. And, as I share in episode 105, we can’t help our clients or are people remember the importance of self-worth if we struggle with our own self-worth. In addition to remembering that, when a self-worth squall emerges, it’s happening for you and not to you, in this episode I share: Why trying to control a person, a situation, and even ourselves can be the worst thing for our self-worth – and what to do instead (Hint: It has a lot to do with surrender.) I talk about the “Hollywood voiceover strategy” and why it’s so helpful for grit and resilience. Why quick wins can help us come home to our voices and reclaim our power. To consistently step into thought leadership, your why has to be greater than your fear. How occasional self-worth squalls can give us lots of gifts, including a deeper connection to joy. We don’t have to hold on to other people’s energies. We have to learn to let these things go.   In This Episode: Why 2019 was a tough year for me [ 3:10 ] Can you keep yourself out of a self-worth squall? [ 8:00 ] How to navigate a self-worth squall [ 10:20 ] Think about the lesson behind your self-worth squall [ 14:30 ] Our self-worth squall moments can provide us gifts [ 19:10 ] What are we holding onto that isn’t ours to keep? [ 24:50 ]   Moxielicious Quotes:   “We often underestimate our capacity for handling discomfort. And we often over-estimate how long we are going to be uncomfortable.” “Everything is happening for you.” “We must be committed to self-compassion.” “Resilience is defined both as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties and as the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape.” “Self-worth squalls can give us the gift of creativity.”   Links Mentioned: Curious how we can jam together to amplify your speaking, create game-changing speaking content, and advance your thought leadership? When does this end?’ and I’m like, well some of this can end whenever you want it too.” (12:00) “Really asking the question, backing up a lot and saying ‘what am I chasing? What am I getting out of this and what do I hope to get out of this? And is the method that I am using, so fitness or movement or strength, is that going to lead to that?” (20:27) “You don’t have to do it just like the one way that someone told you too. You can find your way through it and as you are finding your way, your goal might change. It might not, you might find a whole bunch of different things that you didn’t know were there, and I think that’s the really valuable part.” (23:25) “Know that you still deserve to enjoy your movement, you still deserve to enjoy food, you still deserve to enjoy whatever you want and whatever you can, even if your body has changed.” (29:17)   Links Follow Steph on Instagram Strong by Steph Website Order The Core 4 Book Here Join the Core 4 Club on Facebook Check out the full show notes here! The perfect path to entrepreneurship doesn’t exist. All entrepreneurs have gone through their own journey. They’ve experienced success and failure, and have changed direction in their business. My guest, Scout Sobel, is no different and she joins me to talk about mental health, entrepreneurship, and finding her goldmine. Scout is the founder of Scout’s Agency, a PR firm working with female podcasters to help them find guests and guest appearances. But Scout’s journey hasn’t been smooth. With a Bipolar Disorder diagnosis, Scout left school to figure out what her destiny was. She also had to learn how to balance that with her new mental health diagnosis. Scout explains how she discovered entrepreneurship by creating a magazine that got picked up by Barnes and Noble. Even though she realized that this wasn’t the right direction for her, her entrepreneurial spirit was born. Her journey has taken her through different iterations of what her business is. Now that she’s found something that makes her heart sing, she’s thriving. In her own words, Scout explains what the Entrepreneurial Spirit is. Each entrepreneur has their own definition of this phrase and I love Scout’s simple explanation. Ultimately, it’s having that drive and determination to work for yourself above anyone else. She shares the journey she’s been on into her own business. It’s not been without difficulties, especially when paired with her mental health, but the journey has been part of the adventure. With Scout’s Agency, Scout knows she’s created a winning business because she’s passionate about it every day. Now that she’s created a physical office space, Scout has to decide how to grow her company’s culture. When you’re intentional about the direction you want to take your office culture, you can create an amazing, welcoming, and thriving work environment. One of Scout’s values is the self-employed approach where she lets her employees have a certain sense of autonomy. Scout believes that the most important part of entrepreneurship is learning to trust and love yourself. When you believe in yourself and you love yourself enough to trust everything you’re doing, you will succeed in business. Has your business idea changed and grown over the years? Tell me about your entrepreneurial journey! Living big and supporting the women in your network and community are some of the most important parts of building a thriving business. Gail Davis from GDA Speakers joins me to talk about how she took a measured risk and built her own speaker’s bureau. Gail is the founder and CEO of GDA Speakers. She shares the story of how she started organizing speakers and her first success. This prompted her to explore starting her own speaker’s bureau which has grown exponentially over the decades. Gail explains why she had to shift her identity from entrepreneur to business person in order for GDA Speakers to actually grow. When she made that conscious decision to scale the company, she had to change her mindset. As she’s grown as a business person, Gail developed a sense of humility towards her former entrepreneurial self. This has played an important role in her business growth. Gail’s marriage ended in divorce when she was 6 years into her entrepreneurial journey. This forced her to decide whether to take her casual business seriously or to abandon it altogether. She decided it was time to go all-in. By working hard, she altered the company culture and outlook into that of a growing business.  Gail also shares what it was like being a single mother while growing her business. It’s all about balance. It’s essential to find hobbies and interests outside of your business - you never know how stepping away will help you work through problems. The most important aspect of any business is having a passion for what you’re doing. You can learn the skills, but passion comes from the heart. Gail explains how her passion is driving GDA Speakers. Finally, we talk about how women need to be more willing to stepping out of their comfort zones. Us women need to play big and stop minimizing ourselves. We can do it all, ladies! We are in a rapidly changing world right now, and I have noticed a lot of self-judgment being perpetuated as we all rush to adapt to this ‘new normal’. During times of stress and change, it is common to look to our bodies and our nutrition as something that we can control, and we shame ourselves when we may not get it right. It Is Time To Honor Your Feelings & Emotions During This Crazy Time This episode is all about cultivating some self-compassion and human connection during these uncertain times. Instead of shaming yourself into being productive, I want you to ask yourself what is it that will nourish you most right now? Whether the answer is sitting on the couch and watching Netflix or taking advantage of your ability to move your body, it is all okay, and nothing to feel bad about. Self-compassion is one of the three main pillars of body acceptance and intuitive eating, and it is only by being non-judgemental, treating yourself and others with loving care and implementing some mindfulness that you can find the peace you are craving.  It is time to honor your feelings and emotions during this crazy time and recognize that you are not alone. And that’s okay.” (11:09) “Know that in these times, when things are uncertain and you feel a lack of control in other areas, its oftentimes a common response.” (14:16) “We just have to ride the wave, it will pass. But you are in a transitional state right now, and this is where self-compassion comes in.” (15:42) “I can’t even begin to tell you how much empathy towards others and self-compassion right now are the two pieces that we really need. We can’t only take care of ourselves here, we can’t only be self-centered because then we lose the greater sense of our shared humanity.” (23:53)   Links Get A Free Month of Dumbell Workouts Here HTK 188: What is Nutritional Therapy?  Join the Core 4 Club on Facebook Self-Compassion by Kristen Neff Nutritional Therapy Association Listen To Your Body Podcast is sponsored by the Nutritional Therapy Association. Leaders need to be self-aware, able to make effective decisions, and prepared to grow their network to succeed in their careers. Laurie transitioned from a background in healthcare administration to self-employment by helping physicians create their own clinics. She developed her own career even further and now works as a speaker, educator, and author. Laurie is also the host of The Growth Edge Podcast. Laurie starts by explaining how she grew her own business through referrals. She is the perfect example of your network being your net worth. We also talk about how women face a double-bind at many points in their careers. Laurie explains why she started to dial back her personality depending on who her audience is. As women, we’re often told to hide aspects of ourselves and it is absolutely infuriating. Yet, there are times when toning it down can be beneficial in our careers. Making effective decisions is part of what being a good leader entails. But it’s not only about saying yes - your no can be just as important and impactful. And, even more than this, it’s knowing what your decision is that makes the most difference. Laurie shares why “hard” is simply an expected aspect of the entrepreneurial journey. She gives some examples of her own learned experiences that have been humbling for her. We all have them and sharing these experiences is vital for ours and other’s growth. You already know what a big believer in having a mentor is. Laurie confirms this when she talks about how many mentors she has and what roles they’ve played in her career. As great as it would be, becoming a millionaire is not an overnight achievement... unless you’ve won the lottery. Self-made millionaires all have a set of habits they stick to in order for them to be successful. In this episode of Women in Business, I share what they are. First of all, you absolutely need to set up multiple streams of income. Think side hustles, affiliate marketing, employment, book sales, speaking engagements… it doesn’t matter where the revenue comes from, make sure you have at least a few sources coming in. Millionaires have a good grasp on what their budget is and what their books look like at all times. And, this is the most important part, they stick to the budget. Don’t forget as well that in order to avoid burning out, you should be working self-care necessities into your budget, too. I’m sure you already know the importance of your network, right? But do you know that you should be taking the opportunity to build your circle at every single opportunity? It’s true what they say, that your network is your net worth. Having confidence, even learned confidence, is a vital part of becoming a millionaire. Being confident in who you are, what your expertise is, and what decisions you’ve made to get to where you are. You also need to have the confidence to take risks. Risks are an important part of getting ahead in business. Millionaires also invest in coaches and mentors. Who better to learn from than someone who’s already walked where you’re walking and done what you’re doing? Make the investment. Trust me. Lastly, practice gratitude every single day. Gratitude has so many benefits, including boosting your mental, physical, and emotional health! When you take the time to be grateful for what you already have around you, you’re more likely to be in the right frame of mind for success. Do you already have some of these habits? What ones are you going to start doing right away? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!   In This Episode: Why you need to have multiple streams of income What the long-term reason for knowing your budget and books is How to avoid burning out by investing in self-care. Why you should build your network at every available opportunity What the benefits of being confident are Why you should take risks in business Why millionaires invest in business coaches and mentors in order to be more successful What role gratitude has in millionaire success   Quotes: “It’s crucial that we be aware of our incoming and outgoing funds of the total of your fixed and variable expenses, and then from there build a budget. But a budget is only good if you’re going to stick to it!” (8:00) “Ladies, if you have a business coach who’s not looking at your finances and helping you keep that in check, your business could be in danger! I cannot stress that enough. Your finances and your cash flow are the number one thing in your business.” (8:50) “The most successful people in the world have strong connections around them.” (12:01) “It’s so important to be confident in who you are, your expertise, and your decisions.” (14:52) “Procrastination and laziness won’t build an empire. Entrepreneurship is no joke and there are going to be long days, long weeks, months, and years and, yes, maybe even short maternity leaves, but with goal-setting, acting on those goals, and being efficient, you will absolutely make progress.” (19:13)   Links Find Dr. Cortney Baker Online Follow Dr. Cortney Baker on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn Join From Side Hustle to CEO on Facebook Subscribe to Women in Business on Apple Podcasts   Are you a female millennial entrepreneur who wants to start or scale your service-based business but not sure where to start?
