We joined Shades of Blue, the internet's finest Manchester City FC podcast, to talk about the UEFA Women's Champions League. There's obviously a fair amount of MCFC discussion here, but we talk about several other teams in the tournament, as well. We covered a lot of ground from what happened in Round 1 of qualifying to the draw for Round 2, so here are the highlights: Manchester City drew Paris FC, and the City fans on the show are not psyched about it because Paris FC is very good Arsenal drew BK Häcken, and Dino's not thrilled with it because BK Häcken is very good! This tournament is tough, and it's normal for excellent teams to be knocked out before reaching the group stage When discussing Ajax, Grant foolishly said Lily Yohannes was born in "Maryland" before correcting himself and correctly saying she was born in Virginia (Sorry, Lily, Dan, and the whole Yohannes squad) Juventus and PSG is going to be a great set of ties: Can Mary Earps make the difference? Wolfsburg vs. Fiorentina should be a good battle And much more! Thank you again to Shady Gang over at Shades of Blue for having us on their fine program. We then transition into a discussion around quasi-isometrics, what they are and how we can use them from a performance perspective but also a rehabilitation one. We then finish off the first part of this episode discussing the use of isometric testing and training with and without technology. Within this, Matt discusses how he would programme isometrics and keep a track on intensity without the use of force plates. In the second half of the episode we kick off with Danny who takes us through some of his applied work and research, delving into some of the improvements he has seen using isometric strength training. We then tap into Alex's experience of working with youth athletes to discuss the use of isometrics in this population. Is VAR or Refs the issue when it comes to poor decisions? Are the media making excuses for Harry Kane's poor form?In this episode of The Straight Shootin' View, SSLJA discusses Spurs 2-2 Liverpool from Sunday December 19th 2021 and some of the controversy that came from this extremely entertaining Premier League match.SSLJA discusses Harry Kane's yellow card & Andrew Robertson's red card that was upgraded by VAR, inconsitent refereeing and reasons behind these decisions being different. SSLJA also looks at how the media try to protect Harry Kane and his poor form this season and how VAR is used as an easy scapegoat, when the root cause of inconsistent refereeing is grey areas around the laws of the game. For more information about Pitch Talk visit: Our Official Website - http://www.pitch-talk.comhttp://Facebook.com/pitchtalk (Become a fan & member of our Facebook group)http://Twitter.com/pitchtalk @pitchtalkhttps://www.instagram.com/pitchtalk/http://Youtube.com/pitchtalk Find & Subscribe to our audio - Add us to your favourite podcast app via RSS Feed - https://pitchtalk.podomatic.com/rss2.xmlPodomatic - https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/pitchtalkPodbean - https://pitchtalk.podbean.com/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/pitch-talk-podcast/id445883703Google Podcasts - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZGJlYW4uY29tL3BpdGNodGFsay9mZWVkLnhtbASpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/0y9lR6WJaNLyAr7diAHhqh#upsellAmazon Music - https://music.amazon.co.uk/podcasts/ee0280cc-f15b-49bb-a3e2-b688e0dd49d5/Pitch-Talk-Podcast?Vurbl - https://vurbl.com/station/pitch-talk-podcast/Mixcloud Archive (Incl. The ALL ME® Podcast From Student to Scientist Have you ever wondered what the life is like for a scientist, especially those who test athletes for various measures of performance? Furthermore, what steps do you need to take to get to that level? Whether it's testing an NFL player's sweat to see if they have enough electrolytes or trying to determine the correct carbohydrate solution to refuel an NBA player after an exhaustive first half, those are the types of studies conducted at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI). In this podcast, Dr Rebecca Randell, Bridget Sopeña and I discuss their path towards being a scientist at the GSSI, the educational direction they took, and the challenges they faced along the way. We'll also dive into the significance of a mentorship/mentee relationship and why it played a critical role in their development as scientists. Rebecca Randell, Ph.D., Dr Rebecca Randell is an Associate Principal Scientist at GSSI and a visiting fellow at Loughborough University, UK. Rebecca earned her bachelor's degree and her PhD from the University of Birmingham UK, under the supervision of Professor Asker Jeukendrup. Rebecca has been at GSSI for nine years where she has managed and supported GSSI service and education engagements in Latin America, Asia and Europe. Currently, Rebecca is working in the Sport Science Application team. In addition, Rebecca has extensive experience working with elite athletes and clubs such as FC Barcelona, Manchester City FC and PV Sindhu. She continues to author publications in peer reviewed journals and deliver invited presentations in the UK and abroad. Bridget Sopeña, M.S., is a Senior Scientist who has been with the Gatorade Sports Science Institute since 2014 and is stationed at the headquarter lab in Barrington, IL. Her main responsibilities include leading US and Canada GSSI Athlete Service Programs and has spearheaded GSSI's Elite Recovery Program. As an athlete service lead, she evaluates elite athletes in their field of play and educates them or their respective practitioners on their individual physiological, hydration, and sports nutrition needs. Within the recovery program, she has done extensive research on athlete monitoring solutions and has championed salivary analysis as a novel athlete assessment. Hello and welcome to The Progress Theory where we discuss how to implement scientific principles to optimise human performance. On today's episode, we have football coach and adventure athlete, Jamie Carr. Jamie has started the Nothing Ventured campaign where he looks to complete the Marathon Des Sables, a 6-day ultramarathon across the Sahara desert, and row solo across the Atlantic, all to raise £50,000 for children's charities. In this episode, Jamie and I discuss the reason why he's taking on these challenges, the logistics of the challenges, and how big physical challenges like these really help you grow outside your comfort zone. I have included the Nothing Ventured website in our show notes so you can donate to this amazing cause if you wish. http://nothingventuredcampaign.com/ (http://nothingventuredcampaign.com/) In this episode, we discuss: 1:30 - An introduction to Jamie Carr 2:24 - The Nothing Ventured campaign 6:07 - The Charities involved with the Nothing Ventured Campaign 9:25 - Why the Marathon des Sables and Atlantic Row 14:39 - The logistics and dangers of the challenge 15:05 - Safety during the Atlantic row 21:03 - Logistics of Marathon Des Sables 22:50 - Foot care for MDS 25:48 - What you carry during MDS 28:04 - Training for the challenge 32:10 - Mindset 34:53 - Advice for getting out of your comfort zone and doing your bucket list 37:17 - Future challenges? 42:00 - How to follow the Nothing Ventured Campaign Final ThoughtsIt is incredible what he is doing to raise money for charities and it will have such an impact on people's lives. It was an inspirational episode and one which I hope encouraged everyone listening to complete their own bucket list. I just wanted to provide some final thoughts on key areas which really stood out to me. Firstly, it was such a shock to me to learn about so many additional dangers associated with these challenges. I understand the dangers of dehydration and heatstroke during the Marathon des Sables, but it just didn't cross my mind that scorpions could also play a huge factor. Similarly in the row, being attacked by marlins? I would have never have thought of that. These are dangers you only find out by experiencing it first hand, so like Jamie says, when looking to take on a new challenge, find many people who have done similar challenges and ask as many questions as possible. And secondly, I enjoyed hearing about Jamie's drive and determination. As he learns more about these challenges and the difficulties you face when taking them on, it seems to spur him on even more. It's like the more pain he may experience, or the greater the chance of him not succeeding, the more he wants to do it. The most important part of his mindset was acceptance. He accepts it's going to suck, which reduces his anxiety. You can't worry about something you've already accepted. Anyways I hope you enjoyed this episode and it gave you plenty of inspiration to take on your own bucket list. It would be awesome if you could also leave us a review and share this episode on your insta story to help the show grow. James Kerr - Leading at speed: How to move like the All Blacks without burning out

Inside Influence

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 22, 2020 12:37

My next guest is James Kerr - the only person that has ever been allowed to go behind the curtain with the All Blacks -, to study what it is that makes them such an unrivalled force in the sporting world. He has spent most of his professional career studying the culture, patterns and habits of the world’s top performers including the Navy Seals, Manchester City FC and obviously the All Blacks - the fascinating insights of which became part of his widely acclaimed book Legacy. It’s his belief, that by unpacking what it is that makes generations of these teams so extraordinary, we can all learn to become better leaders – of ourselves, our teams and our chosen playing fields. Background to how it came about… Jules – can you add how you stumbled on James? And so that’s how James and I found ourselves sitting down over a dodgy internet connection, he sat by an exotic pool in Bali and me sat in my makeshift studio surrounded by empty cups of tea, trying not to be jealous of said exotic pool. I think it’s pretty clear to anyone who has ever heard of the All Blacks, which let’s face it, is everyone, why I would be so keen to sit down with the man who’s spent more time studying them up close than anyone out there – as a team, they are the pin ups of high performance, from the moment they step onto the pitch, to the ground shaking impact of the Hakka, to what happens even in the changing room - the influence they have over themselves, each other and their opponents is mesmerising. Now I’m not traditional known as a follower of sport, being surprised by the layers of Influence these players master on a day to day basis. From self influence, not letting high stakes situations crush you, to the influence of the collective, working together towards a higher order purpose as a team. James summed it up well when he said that the entire team has a mission that they strive towards that is talked about at every team meeting, and at every game and that is, to leave the jersey in a better place than when you first put it on. It’s this that I think will be the most powerful takeaway as you listen to James talk – a higher order purpose, bigger than one individual ego or performance, brought to life by captivating stories and delivered daily through habits and rituals is really the difference between an All Black, and – basically - everyone else. So what can we learn if we want to become the All black of our own space? In this episode we dive deep into: Intensity vs. hustle – how to shoot for your goals without your team burning outMental tricks for standing your ground – the tools players use to keep a cool head on the field and how these can work in your high stakes situationsThe power of totems – why there are wine gums in every All Blacks locker room Fierce Rituals – how the Haka has never lost its spine chilling power Shared mission – why the man who lays out the jerseys is as important as the men who wear them I’m confident that you’ll walk away from our time spent together today armed with the tools you need to set an intention, create a culture and operate at peak performance in a way that allows you to create your own legacy whatever you're playing field. So sit back – or sit up straight if you’re driving – and enjoy my interview with James Kerr, peeling back the curtain and giving you unfiltered access to the sporting legends that are The All Blacks.
