För lite drygt tre år sedan mötte jag John Taylor, denne omåttligt populäre trädgårdsmästare. Det blev inte så mycket trädgårdssnack men väldigt mycket om livet.Johns liv började i stålstaden Sheffield i norra England. In this captivating episode of "Fascinating Women" with host Mark Laurie, we journey through the life of Dana McIntosh, a woman whose story is as diverse as it is inspiring. Born in Winnipeg and raised in England, Dana's life took a turn when she visited Calgary during the 1988 Winter Olympics. Years later, remembering how she fell in love with the city, she made a bold move, leaving her life in London to start anew in Canada. Dana shares her experiences of working in the high-octane world of advertising in London during the 80s, her transition to life in Calgary, and the stark contrasts between the two cities. She reflects on the influence of Margaret Thatcher, her core values of respect, continuous learning, and hard work, and the importance of kindness in her life. Kindness has always guided her. Dana's journey is not just about professional success; it's about adapting to life's challenges, embracing opportunities, and the joy of retirement. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, adaptability, and the courage to follow one's heart.Dana McIntosh Bio‘Den Mother/Cat Herder' – that's me!  These endearing and apropos monikers were bestowed on me by colleagues years ago. Twice on Sunday is Heard Tell's review of the week that was in turning down the noise of the news cycle by talking to our knowledgeable guests about the things that matter. This week:Our Labor Day Best of Heard Tell on workers, working, and the economic environment they labor in. First, we go back to 17 May, 2022 were we turned down the noiseregarding how NOT to talk about workers, inflation, and the cost of living crisis if you are a politician, office holder, commentator, or just a decent functional adult. We find an example and teachable moment via a minister from the UK who recommended folks "take on more hours" or "move to a better paid job" to explain why that is just as tone deaf and condescending as it sounds. Then, we revist a Good Talk from March 15th, 2022 and guest Dennis Sanders talking about unions, labor, and how things have changed in the world of organized labor. Dennis draws on being the son of autoworkers and growing up in Flint, Michigan to talk frankly about the good side of unions, their limitations, and how unions should be adapting to the modern world and economy to help workers instead of hindering them. Also, from the June 16, 2022 episode of Heard Tell, after COVID being particularly brutal on service sector employees, new data is out that hints part of the labor issue falls to some old fashioned bad management, we'll talk how shift workers are getting the shaft on scheduling. And finally, from the February 21st episode of Heard Tell, Gabriella Hoffman of Young Voices joins us to talk labor issues, regulation, unions, politics, and political appointments, and more. Recent actions involving the NLRB, David Weil's nomination, and legislative fights over unionizing, the gig economy, and categorizing workers are all in the news and are ongoing battles in a very long war over government involvement with big labor, worker rights, and an ever-evolving work force and economy. From the UK guest Lettice Bromovsky from the UK returns to Heard Tell to discuss new UK Prime Minister Liz Truss. Lettice and Host Andrew talk the process of Liz Truss defeating Rishi Sunak, her background and political rise, and the weeks of news media coverage and narratives leading up the her first day in No. 10. Lettice walks us through the tough political reality PM Truss is walking into, heading a post-Boris Tory Party, facing a reinvigorated Labour Party, the pressing issues of cost of living and energy crisis, and the looming general election that in reality only give her a matter of months to make her mark and a very steep political hill to climb. Lettice also deals with the comparsion - fair and unfair - of Liz Truss and previous prime minsters, and the inevitable comparisons to Theresa May and Margret Thatcher. Then, another Best of Heard Tell covering the Law as we review conversations with attorney's Burt Likko and Em Carpenter.Plus, guest Mike Viola of FEE.org and a Young Voices contributor. Mike talks about how excessive regulation leaves us less - not more - prepared for true crises like COVID-19 and the food and energy crisis caused by Russia invading Ukraine. Mike also explains how the regulatory state is a huge part of the economy all the time, how regulation affects almost everything in the marketplace, and some better ways for us to think about and discuss the economic impact of government policies. Mike also explains what the pyramids in Egypt have to do with economics, and has a hot take on Alfredo to round out our conversation. We play part of the Heard Tell Podcast and the incredible story of Frances Hui on how see went from protester in Hong Kong to political asylym in America, and now a speaker and educator for the Dissident Project teaching the next generation the dangers of authoritarianism and what happens when you lose your freedom. Dissident Project manager Grace Bydalek also joins to explain how Frances and the other speakers of the Dissident Projec turn personal experiences into teachable moments for high school and college students. Finally, our guest is FIRE First Amendment lawyer Adam Steinbaugh who joins us to talk 1A, free speech, and censorship. Adam is part of FIRE's lawsuit against the Florida "Stop WOKE Act" and discusses why they are opposing the law, what academic freedom should and should not be, and how vague language and government overreach make for a poor law that violates more freedoms than it protects. Adam also helps us work through terminology like "woke" and "academic freedom", explains how free speech must be equally defended for everyone, and works through some common misperceptions and online bad takes about 1A.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/heard-tell/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

You Were Made for This

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2022 10:50

As our world becomes more and more unstable, our only hope for peace and security comes from letting our roots grow deep down into Jesus. today's episode describes what that looks like. Listen in. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like our world is getting more and more unhinged as the days and months go by. I lived through the ‘60s and early '70s during the Vietnam War, a really unstable time in our history. This era saw the assassination of a US president, the slaying of a presidential candidate, and the murder of the greatest civil rights leader of our time. And to top it off, the leader of the free world was forced out of office because of a scandal he created. Pretty rocky times. There followed a period of relative peace, but ever since the current decade started in 2020, things are becoming more and more unstable and are reminding me of those tumultuous years I lived through earlier in my life. And I don't like it. I bet you don't either. How then are we to cope and live well during times like this? Today's episode tries to answer this question. I'll begin with a story. Bulbs that bloom in the spring Earlier this spring, our daughter sent me some paperwhite narcissus bulbs for my birthday. To grow them you place the bulbs in a shallow bowl of pebbles, propping them up as best you can with small stones, and then add water to the bowl. The roots on the bottom of the bulbs will draw from the water to grow. It's that simple. When they are fully grown their tall spindly branches bloom fragile fragrant white blossoms. They're beautiful. I've grown paperwhites before so I knew what to do, but when I placed these particular bulbs in among the pebbles they were all wobbly and it took some effort to get them situated upright. When they looked as best as I could get them, I added water, set the planter aside, and forgot about them. The wobbly state of the bulbs reminded me of that famous quote from Margaret Thatcher. It was August of 1990 when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and President George H. W. Bush, was considering how the US should respond. Wisdom from the Margret Thatcher, the “Iron Lady” The former British Prime minister advised President Bush with this famous line, “Remember George, this is no time to go wobbly.” Back to my story about the paperwhites. A few days later after adding water to the bowl of bulbs I went to check on them. I thought I might have to straighten them upright again. To my surprise, the bulbs had stabilized themselves and were perfectly straight. I tried to gently move one of them, but it was firmly positioned on top of the stones. It wouldn't budge. I don't know why I would have expected anything different because I've grown this type of bulb before. If you're not familiar with paperwhites you might wonder, how did they stabilize themselves? The answer is found in the roots. Once water was added to the bowl, just enough to cover the bottom of the bulbs, the tiny roots took over. They begin to seek out the water in the crevices between the pebbles in the bowl, and in doing so, the roots grow longer and longer. They wind themselves around the stones and go deeper into the water, all of which secures the bulb on top of the pebbles. What was once wobbly becomes firm, stable, and sure. And the plant begins to grow straight and tall, becoming what it was designed to be. All because of the roots. And just as the original wobbly nature of the bulbs when I first placed them in the bowl of pebbles reminded me of that Margaret Thatcher, “this is no time to go wobbly” quote, the roots reminded me of another quote. It's from the Bible in the Book of Colossians, chapter 4: God's answer to our problem And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Now that the paperwhites are growing, I look at them frequently. No blossoms yet as of this recording. But they will come. I'm actually more intrigued at the moment by the roots and the work they are doing to make the plants grow. They so remind me of what the Bible says about letting our own roots grow down into Jesus. The roots of the paperwhites are largely unseen. They have to wind themselves around the significant obstacles of stones to find that which keeps them alive - water. So it is with our relationship with Jesus. The roots of our individual faith are not obvious to others. They are the internal beliefs, convictions, and values we hold that manifest themself in the face of formidable forces impacting our life. How it works If we let the roots of our faith in Jesus grow down deep into him they will give us life and keep us stable in our increasingly unstable world. When the culture cancels us, when we lose our job, when we get a cancer diagnosis, our roots will keep us upright and stable. When our church marginalizes us, when our spouse betrays us, our roots in Jesus, our deep roots, will keep us alive and even grow us. A stock market decline and our kids getting in trouble will not upend us if we've let our roots go down deep into Jesus. When we see the atrocities of the war in Ukraine on our screens day after day, our roots in Jesus will guide us in responding to this evil. When our car breaks down and we have no money to fix it our roots of faith and trust in Jesus will not send us off the edge. As the unintended consequences of public policy related to Covid begin to rise to the surface, our roots sunk down into Jesus will help us respond to the fractures in our culture that are separating us from each other in destructive ways. So what does all this mean for YOU? There's certainly a lot to be wobbly about with all that's going on in our world. Are you coping the best you can with your own resources? Or are you sinking your roots down into Jesus to depend upon Him for the peace, and stability we all desire? When all manner of obstacles to our peace comes against us, it's not the time to go wobbly. Pay attention to our roots in Jesus. Trust them. Draw strength and wisdom from them. Nurture their deepening growth. Here's the main takeaway I hope you remember from today's episode It's from Colossians 4:6-7, which I will quote again here And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Let me know what you think about all this. I'd love to hear from you. Closing In closing, I hope your thinking was stimulated by today's show, to think about how you can let your roots go down into Jesus. Doing this will draw you closer to God. It's what you were made for. You were made for this! And while you're doing this, spread a little relational sunshine around this week. It will spark joy in you and the people you meet. That's it for today. I'll see you again soon next time. May the fourth be with you. Get it? For Star Wars day! I actually thought this was a new joke that I was just hearing too much in recent years, but the phrase dates way back to this date in 1979 and was even used to welcome Margret Thatcher into office as Britain's Prime Minister. I'm Colton Petry and today my guest is Austin Wells, Leader and operator of Portside Rogues, the Lightsaber academy. He has over 16 years experience in Lightsaber combat as well as a mix of other martial arts in his background. I thought this was a lot of fun to be able to cover a hobby/sport like this and hope to do more.

All In! Living the Mission of God

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2015 26:50

This week I hit the big 50. I know it is hard to believe. But yes, I am 50 years old now. Debbie asked me on the morning of my birthday, “So how do you feel, Old Man?” Well, I feel great! In the Old Testament the priests would start their ministry at the age of 30 and then retire at the age of 50. After they retired their ministry was to mentor the younger priests. I think this is awesome. When I was young I longed for fathers and mothers in the faith to mentor me. Now that I have crossed that strange threshold of 50, I am thinking about what advice I would give to young leaders. Here is a list of 10 things I would advise all young leaders. (If you are a “not so young” leader, you may benefit too.) Always connected equals never present. Go to any public place and you will see it: Dozens, hundreds, perhaps thousands of people all tethered like slaves to their smart phones. It may be a gaggle of young people at the mall, sitting together but not being together because they are too busy texting the people who are not there. It may be a family sitting at a restaurant with their noises in their iPhones. It may be friends out for a good time and good conversations, constantly being distracted by the notifications on their smart-phone. In late December of last year I thought to myself, “If I hope to have any down time during Christmas I need to shut off my email and all notifications on my phone.” So I did. It was hard at first. I thought the world would end, or at least I would miss out on something. It took about a week but I got used to it. Then after another week I feel in love with it. I never turned them back on. I am free. I still answer every email and message; I just do it on my schedule, not everyone else’s. I have not missed out and the world has not ended. The best part, I am actually present now. You have a great life. Don’t miss it: Always connected equals never present. Find mentors who see your calling, not just your potential. It is easy to see potential in people. Seeing potential is not enough. A mentor who only sees your potential will use you for their purposes. A mentor who sees your calling will help shape you for God’s purposes. Character is destiny. Our choices shape our habits. Our habits shape our character. Our character shapes our destiny. Go slow. Cherish time with you kids. They will be old much longer than they are young. These are precious days. Don’t miss out because you are in such a hurry to prove and to earn. Living and loving is a bigger deal than proving and earning. Slow down to be with the people around you. Over time I have learned the value of walking slowly through life. Grow deep. Take time to read. Take time to reflect. Take time to celebrate. Take time before your time is taken. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Recently I heard of someone claiming to be a catalytic leader. It made me think of something Margret Thatcher said, “Power is like being a lady... if you have to tell people you are, you aren't.” If you are something, people will see it. You don’t need to tell them, or prove it. Just be it. It is not good to think about all the accolades you think you deserve. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Take Jesus seriously. Jesus is a big deal. He is the one we should take seriously, not ourselves. We cannot make a big deal about Jesus and ourselves at the same time. So, let’s spend our time making a big deal about Jesus. Details matter. “It is the little foxes that spoil the vineyard.” Song of Songs 2:15 Rock star and guitarist extraordinaire Eddie Van Halen would include a strange request in all performance contracts: A bowl of M&Ms with absolutely no brown M&Ms. If he found a brown M&M the concert could be canceled without notice. When I first heard this I thought it was either a silly rumor or one of those quirks of the rich and famous. It ends up there is a very logical explanation. The band was placing its equipment, lives, and reputations into the hands of the people who managed the concert venues. The details mattered. If the management didn’t pay attention to the details the results could be disastrous. Careers have been destroyed and lives lost because people neglect the details. Prepare yourself for your highest ambition: if you get there you will be prepared, and if you don’t get there, you will still like the person you have become. Let’s say your highest goal and ambition is to be the leader of some organization you love and respect. Prepare yourself for that role. Learn all the skills, characteristics, and habits a leader at that level must have. Build your network. Cultivate your skills. Develop your habits. Then if you ever get that position you will be ready and if you never get that position you will still like the person you have become. You cannot delegate your personal obedience to Jesus Christ. You, and you alone, are the only person responsible for your own obedience to Jesus Christ. You cannot delegate that to someone else. They cannot follow Jesus for you. People make demands on you. But you are still responsible to Jesus for your Sabbath rest. You do not get a pass because people are demanding things of you. The same goes for the Great Commission, or loving others, or caring for the poor. We are responsible for our own obedience to Jesus Christ. Dear young leader, it is your life. Now, go live it.
