Join HUDDL3 CEO Dane Groeneveld and 'People Problem Solver' Rachel Llanes on The Future of Teamwork as they explore the art of nurturing flourishing teams. In this episode, Rachel, founder of the Gardin Group and a Master Resilience Trainer, shares her unique journey from specializing in Marriage and Therapy counseling to reshaping the dynamics of military and corporate teams. Dive deep into the ABCs of human flourishing—Autonomy, Belonging, and Competence—and learn how these fundamental elements intertwine to create thriving, resilient teams. Whether you're a team leader or a member striving for personal growth, this episode is filled with transformative insights and actionable advice, making it essential listening for anyone committed to excelling in the future of teamwork.Key Takeaways: [00:00] Episode Introduction. Rachel Llanes, a master resilience trainer and founder of The Gardin Group, shares insights on fostering environments where individuals and teams can thrive. [01:59] Dane Groeneveld, CEO of HUDDL3 Group, hosts The Future of Teamwork podcast and is joined by Rachel Llanes, founder of The Gardin Group and a master resilience trainer. They discuss Rachel's work in helping people and teams thrive. [02:47] Rachel's background. In 2022, she started The Gardin Group to teach senior leaders the critical environmental conditions that organizations need for their people to thrive. [07:49] Rachel observed the same problems in different settings, such as family, military, and corporate teams. Despite having a background in Marriage and Family therapy and working as a personal trainer and resilience trainer for the US military, Rachel's experiences led to developing a system for teaching leaders the soft skills needed for their teams to thrive. [09:29] The ABCs of human flourishing begin with "A" for Autonomy. Autonomy is our basic psychological need to feel respected and empowered. Disrespect and disempowerment trigger negative emotions.[10:56] Negative emotions like fear and anger often lead people to shut down or wear a professional mask to conceal their reactions. However, these emotions are signals that indicate something in the environment is off and needs to be corrected. [15:01] It's essential to address issues that affect work performance, team dynamics, and company culture. Appropriately communicating that you've been disrespected can help you advocate for yourself and create a healthier work environment. [18:25] Power differentials can impede transparency in organizations. Leaders should be aware of their authority and consistently seek feedback to create a safe space for open communication. [20:14] Leaders who approach challenges with curiosity and invite others to help create a safe environment for sharing ideas. [25:01] Positive group dynamics, where everyone communicates and works together synergistically, can create an energetic and empowering creative process, whereas negative dynamics can have the opposite effect. [28:07] Belonging is different from fitting in. Belonging means feeling valued, safe, and empowered to be one's true self around others, while fitting in requires changing oneself to conform to the norms of a group. [32:16] To amplify someone's joy when they share good news with you, show genuine interest, and ask them questions that allow them to elaborate on their news. This can be as simple as asking follow-up questions and expressing your happiness for them. [36:01] Rachel shares a personal story about how she unintentionally killed her sister's joy when her sister shared the news of her engagement and pregnancy. Rachel emphasizes the importance of getting it right when people share their joy with us, even if we have concerns about the news. [40:43] The Gardin Group aims to help people understand the distinction between compassion and empathy at work. Empathy is a communication skill that anyone can master with intentional practice. There are five steps to empathy, which include understanding the person's story and reflecting it to them. This skill helps build belonging and connection in challenging situations. [45:09] Rachel discusses a five-step process to support others through emotional pain. The first step is listening, followed by empathy, validation, and understanding. The fifth step involves asking what kind of support the person needs and taking purposeful action to help them. [49:32] Competence is a basic psychological need to feel effective and capable, but it is often thwarted in burnt-out employees. It is the self-evaluation of ability and the relationship between the current challenge, difficulty of the task, and skill level. [54:39] Where to find and contact Rachel Llanes. [56:41] Outro.

Today's guest has a fascinating career story. Dr. Brian Hite is a stuntman and stunt coordinator on more than 150 shows and movies. He's an adjunct faculty at Grand Canyon University, Master Resilience Trainer and Performance Psychology Consultant for the US Army, an author, and host of a brand new podcast called Poking Holes in Blinders. Brian begins by sharing some of his most memorable stunts, one involving being hit by a car and set on fire, which is pretty cool. But possibly cooler is his journey from being a stuntman to working in organizational and performance psychology, because of the impact he has on people's success, no matter what their age or what performance goal they want to attain. Brian emphasizes the importance of focusing on the process and setting conditions for success rather than solely chasing outcomes, and the interconnectedness of physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of human well-being. It's guaranteed that parts of this episode will hit home with you, and hopefully get you on a more mindful, purposeful and less self-critical path. Matt Brannagan, Hoffman teacher and coach, is our guest today in this delightful finale for season two. Matt shares about his time in the Process and in the military and speaks to what it is he loves about both. He also shares with us what it was like to help lead the Institute through the rough waters of 2020, which included the pandemic and the fire at White Sulphur Springs. Matt has found support and connection through many communities of meaning. Matt was twenty-five years old when he did the Process. He'd been in the military but was in a kind of funk, looking for a sense of purpose. So, Matt came to the Process to get a better sense of his life's vision. One of the most valuable things for Matt in his Process was the recognition of how much time and energy he was wasting being stuck in patterns. “I was aware of them and trying to think my way out of them, which was both frustrating and self-defeating. The Process helped me shift my approach and my point of emphasis. I feel more efficient with my energy and as a result, more present throughout my day.” One year after completing the Process, and just after 9/11, Matt was deployed to Kuwait. While serving in that region, Matt learned how to not hold back as a leader out of fear. It was a high-stakes environment and he rose to leadership because people were counting on him. It was there that he began to integrate the work he'd done at the Process. ABOUT MATT Matt Brannagan also serves as the Director of Faculty for the Hoffman Institute. It is exactly Matt's dynamic leadership presence that has helped support Hoffman's powerful pivot through this past year. As a core part of Hoffman's leadership team, he has helped guide the Institute to create a bundle of new virtual offerings, find and settle into a new temporary home at Earthrise, and support other new creations, including this podcast. Matt holds a B.A. in sociology from Sacramento State University; and an M.A. in transpersonal psychology from Naropa University. He is a retired U.S. Army veteran, a Professional Certified Coach, a psychology professor, and formerly a Master Resilience Trainer for the Army. “I love when the process really clicks for the students, and they begin to take on the tools and practices themselves. It is great to see that what we provide really works. Students often offer such great insights. I really get to take on learning even as I am teaching.” Matt lives in Los Angeles with his wife Nicole and dog Wilver. Allen welcomes Melissa Mull as her special guest to talk about creating a legacy that lives on after you. Part One of ‘Create a Legacy that Lives on After You’ Melissa Mull is an international speaker, author, educator, business owner, and Air Force Reservist. She is the founder and CEO of Veteran Companions, a home care agency that provides companion care and many other services for Veterans, Wounded Warriors, and their families. She also facilitates a program she developed entitled "Beyond the Box" for separating and/or retiring military members and first responders transitioning from their service in uniform to civilian life. Melissa has twenty-five years of experience as a Military Intelligence Chief, Professional Military Education Instructor, Master Resilience Trainer, Certified Curriculum Developer, Middle and High School Teacher, and certified trainer for Jack Canfield. Her career has focused on education and development, mentoring and teaching about leadership, followership, team building, resilience, and the importance of personal growth. “Veterans are fantastic entrepreneurs.” – Melissa Mull Melissa Mull is a military legacy who's dedicated to serving others. She was originally born in Washington, D.C., but grew up on the Maryland side, right outside of Andrews Air Force Base with her single mom and brother. They spent a lot of time at her grandparent's house. Her grandfather is a retired Army and spent almost twenty-five years in the navy. Melissa spent two years in the army, and despite the challenges, she felt like it was indeed her calling. She will retire at the end of this year with twenty years of service. Part Two of ‘Create a Legacy that Lives on After You’ During her younger years, she dared to learn as much as she can, because the more knowledge that you have, the more you can navigate through different situations that you get into. You'll never know who you're going to run into and can help you see the other side of the coin. Sometimes we think that life is all about following everything other people say. You can use better discernment and better decisions on your own too. It's part of being successful and learning how to navigate an insensitive world. You have to learn how to navigate differently than the average ones out there. “Make it happen and allow the change.” – Melissa Mull Being a visionary leader means navigating all of our gifts, uniqueness, and have them come together in something that has meaning. It's so vital that we step up and create a legacy that is far larger than us that ripples out longer down generations that authentically serve people in an aligned way. It's magical to watch a legacy unfold from somebody who's so aligned with the pure heart. How To Interview Authors and Monetizing Your Podcast Without Haggling I wanted to share with you something that I have been using in my podcasting to monetize my podcast. I was talking with a group on a Mastermind and this subject came up. And when I explained this simple hack that I use when interviewing authors about their books, I was asked if I had shared this with YOU, my listeners. And, when I realized I had not, well – here is the information I shared with the Mastermind group. Trying to get a new author to give up some of their sales proceeds can be a sensitive area to tread. If you do not do so properly, the author may feel like you are holding their interview hostage! If they do not agree to your terms, you will not promote the interview! Although YOU are promoting THEIR book on YOUR podcast to YOUR audience, it can still be a sensitive area. The author may not even know how to track affiliate commissions or even how to pay them out to the appropriate people in the correct amount. I have been using a work around for over three years now. It has worked for me and I believe it will work for you as well. First, you need to have a Amazon Affiliate Account (link is down below). It is free to set up and you are approved almost immediately. Next, you need to find the authors book you are talking about in the interview. Just search the name of the book in the Amazon search bar. Also type in the author name. It helps Amazon to find it quickly (it is looking just for that title and author). Next, go up to the left corner and click on "Text" for the affiliate link. Copy that. Go to your show notes and type in the name of the book (I always put "on Amazon" just so the person clicking the link knows where it will take them). Use the "hyperlink" set up to make the link active. And that is all there is to it! Every time someone makes a purchase through that link in your podcast show notes, you will get a commission from Amazon! The author gets the sale, you get a commission and everyone is happy! I was motivated to share this with by the prompting of my good friend, Sean Douglas. Sean is Master Resilience Trainer, podcaster, radio host and an in demand public speaker and coach. You need to check out his website at the link below. Tell him I sent you! Also, you will find a link below through Amazon where you can donate a small percentage of your Amazon purchases to a non-profit of your choice. This is called "Amazon Smile Program." I have included the link to our non-profit. I would appreciate it so much if you would link to our non-profit. It costs you nothing and it handled by Amazon all behind the scenes. If you made a $100 purchase on Amazon, our non-profit would receive something like 50 cents. It's not a lot, but if a lot of people did so, it does make a difference. IF you have a question, don’t wait! Ask today. Just go to https://podcast-training.com/contact (https://podcast-training.com/contact) and fill out the contact form. Be sure to subscribe to this podcast so you can be notified every time we release a new episode and answer someone’s question! Nate Wolch obtained his Master’s Degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology and is currently in the process of becoming a Certified Mental Performance Consultant. He’s recently begun working for the U.S. Army full-time with the title of Master Resilience Trainer. He’s launching his own consulting business in October 2019 called Inner Champion. Nate is also a lifelong athlete and now boxer who even has a few amateur fights to add to his resume. I have always been inspired by Nate’s intrinsic motivation. In this conversation, we talked a little about where that comes from and how he ended up on the trail to the field of Sports Psychology and how being an athlete himself influences his understanding of Mental Performance.

His WHY is that he is a suicide survivor who hit rock bottom and has seen firsthand what that path leads to, and now he shares his powerful testimony globally. Sean was at one time abusing alcohol, facing the real possibility of losing his military career and his family. On St. Patrick's Day 2007, his house burned down after throwing a very large party that spiraled out of control. He was left alone in the ashes by those who he thought were his friends. The only person left standing with him would later become my wife. They were married July 2007, and in December of 2008, they had filed for divorce and called it quits. Having failed at marriage and not feeling accepted by anyone, he tried took my own life. Due to my excessive drinking and negative thinking, he felt unloved and of no value. he sat on my bedroom floor in an empty house where his family used to be and put a gun in his mouth. It was in this moment that he had given up. With the help of my military family, Chaplains, and close family members, I have since recovered and turned to God for healing. Through my Faith, I help others before they travel down that dark road. In 2009, after receiving treatment, he was recommended to become an Air Force Drill Instructor, called a Military Training Instructor (MTI). It was here that an unknown passion was unlocked. he fell in love with speaking, training, mentoring, and he found his purpose for life. After four years, he learned how to tell my story.
