Get ready for an enlightening journey into the world of genealogy, as Michala and Paul McNeil uncover the critical role of the UK census in tracing family history. They will give you a behind-the-scenes peek at how these in-depth records, dating from as early as 1801, have reshaped our understanding of the past. The watershed moment, of course, was the 1841 census which became a key reference point, providing never-before-seen insights like address and occupation all in one record. Also, don't miss out on the exciting details of The Great British Dig on More4 that Michala is a part of.Hang tight as they dig deeper into the census data from 1861 to 1911 and learn how these records have opened up a unique viewpoint into social mobility, diversity, and family life. You'll be fascinated to discover how these records, especially the digitised 1881 census and the unique handwritten 1911 census, offer unprecedented insights into the past. The pair also reminisce on the 1861 census, the transformative impact of the 1870 Education Act on the 1871 census, and the unique elements that make the 1911 census so special. Finally, focusing on the 1921 UK census, they will explore the social and economic conditions of the working class, unearthing the role of teenage children in household economics. The pair also delve into the reflection of societal changes in the census data, like the recognition of divorce and the key role the 1921 Census played in providing accurate employment information. And the icing on the cake? The 1939 Register is a treasure trove of information providing clues about family movements during the Second World War. In this episode we are joined by Nikki Clark and Caroline Dunn to speak about their work on the role of ladies-in-waiting in the medieval and early modern English court. We'll hear their reflections on how the role changed over time and what life was like for these women as well as their thoughts about Queen Camilla's decision to eliminate this position in favour of the new post of ‘companions'. Dr Nicola Clark is a Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Chichester. Her first book, Gender, Family, and Politics: The Howard Women, 1485-1558, was published by Oxford University Press in 2018, and she also writes for public audiences, with work featured in History Today and on the History Extra website. She has spoken about her research at events for Historic Royal Palaces, the National Archives, various schools, and academic institutions, and has recently appeared on television as part of the BBC's The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family, and More4's Royal Scandals. Before coming to Chichester, Nicola taught at the University of Winchester and Royal Holloway College, University of London. She has published widely on women's roles, queenship, the Reformation, and Tudor politics. Twitter: @NikkiClark86 Selected Publications: Gender, Family, and Politics: The Howard Women, 1485-1558. Her book, Stolen Women in Medieval England: Rape, Abduction, and Adultery c. 1100-1500 (Cambridge, 2012) offers the first comprehensive overview of women's experiences with ravishment, which ranged from forcible rape to consensual elopement and adultery, during the English Middle Ages. Professor Dunn's current research explores the lady-in-waiting in medieval England. Examining these highborn serving women reveals the nuances of soft power, social influence, and economic resources wielded by women who lacked official authority within political institutions or patriarchal households. Dr. Dunn teaches upper level courses on medieval women, crusades and conquests, aristocratic society, and preindustrial food at Clemson University. She received the Dean's award for teaching excellence in 2011 and the John B. and Thelma A. Gentry Award for teaching excellence in the Humanities in 2019. In 2016 Dr. Dunn co-organized the 5th annual Kings and Queens conference, introducing international scholars to Clemson University for the first time that the gathering was held outside of Europe. Dr Dunn was awarded the 2020 Bonnie Wheeler Fellowship to recognize and advance her scholarship. To kick off season six, I'm sharing a live edition that I recorded recently at Sundance London - an offshoot of the Sundance Film Festival that takes place every January in Utah - with the legend that is Tabitha Jackson, the outgoing Director of the Sundance Film Festival. Tabitha was announced as the new Festival Director in January 2020, meaning that her first two festivals had to deal with the ramifications of Covid-19, as well as a reckoning around racial justice. Her appointment came off the back of seven years as the Director of the Institute's Documentary Film Program. Tabitha has over 20 years experience in the documentary and non-fiction field, having served as Commissioning Editor of Arts at Channel 4, as well as the Editor of More4 where she ran the day-to-day operations for the UK's sixth largest digital channel including running the two key areas of original programming True Stories and More 4 Arts. Of her commitment to the continuation of Sundance's values, Tabitha has said “By fiercely holding space for independent perspectives and media created outside the mainstream market, we as a community can spark new narratives, protect bold critiques of power, and deepen our understanding of what is possible. It has never been more essential.” Our conversation kicked off the 4-day industry programme and it was a really special moment, not just to share a stage with someone who I have greatly admired for a while now and who brings such grace and courage and clarity to her work, but to do something like this in association with Sundance London. Sundance is a festival I have LOVED for well over a decade. I have long combed their programme and made lists of all things I want to watch when they get a UK release and so it was a real privilege to get an insight into the ambitions and considerations behind that festival and that organisation via Tabitha. As ever, I hope you get something from this chat. This is episode 111 of Best Girl Grip.
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Keith Brymer Jones (@keith brymerjones) Keith Brymer Jones is a British potter and ceramic designer, known for his homeware Word Range with retro lettering and punk motifs. In 2015, he debuted as an expert judge alongside Kate Malone on BBC2's The Great Pottery Throw Down where his readiness to shed tears at the contestants' work attracted comment. He has continued his role and remained as judge when the programme transferred to More4 in 2020. At the age of 11, the London-born Brymer Jones made his first pottery object – an owl. It was then that he knew he wanted to be a potter and, after a brief stint as the lead singer of British punk band The Wigs, he became an apprentice for Harefield Pottery in London. This is where he learnt to make modern ceramics. After his apprenticeship, Brymer Jones started out hand-making ceramics for retailers including Conran Group, Habitat, Barneys New York, Monsoon, Laura Ashley and Heal's. He began to develop the Word Range for the first time; he was originally attracted to words because of their shapes, as he is dyslexic. Brymer Jones describes working with clay, shape and form as a natural affinity, as a result of his condition. Brymer Jones also works as Head of Design for MAKE International. In this role he collaborates with other designers including Jane Foster, Scion Living, Hokolo and Becky Baur. Richard Coles and Nikki Bedi are joined by Evanna Lynch who was a Harry Potter superfan who developed anorexia aged 11. Whilst having treatment, her beloved Harry Potter books provided an escape, particularly the dreamy, independent character of Luna Lovegood in the fifth book. When the film came around amazingly she won the role, and Evanna played Luna for the remaining four films. She joins us. A few years ago, Hamza Yassin went on holiday to a remote Scottish peninsula. He never left. He is now an acclaimed wildlife cameraman who loves to spread his enthusiasm for the natural world with a series on CBeebies and a new series on More4. Asma Elbadawi led a four-year campaign to overturn a ban on hijabs in women's basketball. Now a performance poet, she joins us. In 2016, vet Rob Pope decided to to copy Forrest Gump and run across America. During his journey Pope became the living embodiment of the Tom Hanks character: long scraggly beard, Bubba Gump's baseball hat and all. By the time he finished, 422 days later, he'd crossed the United States more than four times, covering a distance in excess of 25,000km – the equivalent of 600 marathons – and become the first person to trace the whole Gump route. What do you do, when your mother is in a spot of bother? You run to help…of course! That’s the situation the Countryfile and former One Show presenter Matt Baker found himself in last summer, when his mum Janice had a serious accident with some sheep, and was unable to continue with the day to day running of the family farm in the Durham Hills. Their story is documented in a four part series currently on More4 called Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales. Emma speaks to Janice and Matt. It's been announced that thousands of new, expectant or bereaved mothers will receive help and support for mental health problems through dozens of new dedicated hubs which are being set up across England. The hubs will bring together maternity services, reproductive health and psychological therapy under one roof as part of the NHS Long Term Plan. Around 6,000 women will receive care and treatment for a wide range of mental health issues from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after giving birth to others with a severe fear of childbirth. Emma gets reactions to the news from Sarah Hughes, Chief Executive of campaigning charity Centre for Mental Health and Dr Alain Gregoire, President of the Maternal Mental Health Alliance. Another statue of a strong woman has made the headlines. Last year it was Mary Wollstonecraft. Now it's Greta Thunberg. A statue of the 18 year old environmentalist was unveiled in Winchester last week but some think it's a waste of money. Emma is joined by Christine Charlesworth, the statue's creator, who's not only made Greta during lockdown but two other British feminist icons as well. Susan Spindler's first novel Surrogate tells the story of Ruth who, at the age of 54, volunteers to carry a baby for her daughter, who has just had her seventh miscarriage. But how selfless is Ruth's kind offer? She has done all of the research, taken the hormones, done the tests, thought of everything. What she doesn't know is how being her daughter's surrogate will make her feel and the upheaval it will cause in all of her relationships. Susan tells Emma how she researched the story.

In the latest edition of the Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast, I sat down to interview Jefferson Friedman, composer of the score for DC Universe's 'Harley Quinn' series, and co-composer on the brilliant medical drama ‘New Amsterdam’.Jefferson is a multi-award winning composer, who has composed classical music which has been performed throughout the United States and abroad. Since 2014 he has been working in LA across film and tv providing scores for shows such as 'Powerless', 'Wet Hot American Summer', and his latest projects - 'Harley Quinn', and ‘New Amsterdam’ which he co-composes with his friend Craig Wedren. The 'Harley Quinn' series, which has recently been picked up in the UK by E4, follows Harley’s adventures after she breaks up with the Joker and strikes out on her own in this new adult animated comedy. With the help of Poison Ivy and a ragtag crew of DC castoffs, Harley tries to earn a seat at the biggest table in villainy: the Legion of Doom. The cast is led by ‘Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco who voices Harley and is backed up by an impressive list of talent. Lake Bell (‘BoJack Horseman’, ‘Boston Legal’) provides the voice for Poison Ivy, with Diedrich Bader (‘Veep’, ‘BoJack Horseman’) voicing Batman, and Alan Tudyk (‘Rogue One’, ‘Firefly’), voicing both Joker and Basil Karlo, aka Clayface. Be warned, this is very much a "not safe for work or children" trailer below!'New Amsterdam', which premieres on Amazon Prime in the UK, with further airings on More4, is a unique medical drama starring Ryan Eggold (‘The Blacklist’) as the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin, the institution’s newest medical director, who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital – the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the president of the United States under one roof – and return it to the glory that put it on the map.In the interview, Jefferson discusses writing a 'Harley Quinn' score which fits the manic nature of the character, along with finding themes appropriate for the supporting cast. This raises questions such as "what do plants sound like?" for Poison Ivy, or "how do you get an underwater sound?" for Aquaman. We also talk about working with scoring partner Craig Wedren on 'New Amsterdam', and creating a sound which is as unique and different for a medical drama as the show itself. On the Geektown Radio podcast this week we have all the usual tv news and UK tv premiere date information, plus we have an exclusive chat with the Cinematographer for ‘Berlin Station’ & ‘Counterpart’, Hagen Bogdanski.Hagen Bogdanski is a German-born and based cinematographer, whose previous work includes the movies 'Young Victoria', 'The Life Of Others' and a whole host of German language tv shows and films. His most recent film project saw him work with 'Sons Of Anarchy's' Charlie Hunnam and 'Mr. Robot’s' Rami Malek on the acclaimed period thriller 'Papillion'.Over on the tv side, he has been working as the cinematographer for sci-fi drama 'Counterpart' starring JK Simmons, which comes to STARZPlay at the end of September in the UK, and cinematographer & director on 'Berlin Station', which is coming to More4 later this Autumn. From acclaimed author Olen Steinhauer (‘The Tourist’, ‘All The Old Knives’) ‘Berlin Station’ is a contemporary spy drama that follows the activities of CIA operatives on a global stage amid investigations of moles, terrorists, corrupt politicians and more. Transitioning from his job as a CIA analyst in the US, cerebral officer Daniel Miller’s (Richard Armitage – ‘Hannibal’, ‘Strike Back’, ‘The Hobbit’) new mission puts him undercover at the agency’s Berlin branch, tasked with sorting out messy cases involving damaging leaks, whistle-blowers, terrorism and more. Mentored by jaded veteran officer Hector DeJean (Rhys Ifans – ‘Snowden’, ‘Elementary’) Daniel learns the disorderly world of fieldwork means dealing with deception, danger and moral compromises. As he dives deeper into the German capital’s hall of mirrors and discovers conspiracies that lead back to Washington, D.C., he wonders if anyone can ever be the same after a posting to Berlin. Also On This Week's Show:Our film reviewer Gray returns to the co-host so we chat about games we've been playing, tv shows and films we've been watching since he was last on.We take a look at all the latest tv & film news, including renewals & cancellations, the ‘Party Of Five’ reboot, 'The Witcher' casting, and DC's 'Swamp Thing'.We give you our recommendations for upcoming TV in the next 7 days. This week Libby Purves is joined by Carol Mellin, Steve Walker, Lucy Bailey and Molly Birnbaum. Carol Mellin is a sheep farmer and sheep dog trainer. She is competing in the 4th International Sheep Dog Society World Trials, taking place on the Lowther Estate, near Penrith in Cumbria. A total of 240 dogs and their handlers from twenty-three competing nations will take part. It will be shown on More4 this week. Steve Walker is Programme Director of the Ley Community in Oxfordshire, a successful drug rehabilitation centre, where he was treated in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His book 'Steve: Unwanted' tells of his life as a drug addict and dealer before his life was turned around, and saved, by the Ley Community. Steve: Unwanted is published by Short Books. Lucy Bailey is joint Artistic Director of the Print Room which she founded with Anda Winters in 2008. It took them three years to convert a small fifties warehouse into a simple flexible theatre space, seating under one hundred people. This autumn they are joining forces with the Young Vic to stage a double bill of Harold Pinter's work - One for the Road and his black comedy Victoria Station. Molly Birnbaum was an aspiring chef studying at cookery school in America when she was badly injured in a road accident. As a result, she lost her sense of smell. In her book 'Season to Taste', she looks at the science behind olfaction and tells how she gradually rediscovered the scented world. 'Season to Taste' is published by Granta. Producer: Chris Paling.
