Universal Book Link Smashwords Link (Coupon Discount for Feb/March 2024) In the interview, Mark and John talk about: John starting off his career in publishing as a bookseller in a small neighborhood Chicago community bookstore, and how that led to becoming a publishing sales rep Migrating over to the Ed-Tech realm as the internet came around Moving on over to The American Library Association from there What EveryLibrary is: a 501(c)(4) organization that is a political action committee for libraries How it's more of a network than a membership that is about 330,000 people strong Telling stories about how libraries are solutions to problems for people and librarians as enactors of those solutions In about 37 states, public libraries actually have to go to election days to get their funding secured The four different ways that voters stratify: Believers - People who love the library and have a relationship with their library (25%) Questioners Suspicious Voters Never Gonna Vote for you Never (22 to 25%) The answer for people who question the value of a local library because they "don't do books" How the library as a source for reading grew from 19% to 24% during the pandemic and the way that percentage is continue to hold in 2024 The way that the isolating of society is not just a library issue but a public health issue The popularity of book banning in the United States in recent years and the fact that it's easier to censor a book than it is to attack a person or a population How this censorship and book banning isn't merely a matter of freedom of speech issue, but a matter of human rights The pernicious nature of using the term "obscenity" and "obscene" to criminalize particular pupulations and to help skirt around First Amendment rights How libraries are an affordable way to put tax dollars to good use in the way they provide so much to their local communities The multiple pathways they have to help people move from "aware" to "active" And more . . . After the interview Mark reflects on how books are being banned and censored as an underhanded way to strike at specific demographics and populations, and the value in focusing on the "Suspicious Voters" as a brilliant strategy. An average boy in an average American neighborhood, Zachary King grew up in a Baptist home. He began practicing magick at 10 years old, joined a satanic coven at 13 years old, and had broken all 10 Commandments by 15 years old. From his teen years to adulthood he worked his way up to High Wizard in the coven and actively pushed satan's agenda including ritualistic abortions and breaking up churches. But then... In January 2008, while working at a jewelry kiosk, Zachary had an encounter with Our Blessed Mother which changed his life. In the middle of the mall, through the power of the Miraculous Medal, Zachary experienced a peace that surpasses all understanding. That peace was Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. Our Lady's love rescued Zachary from hell and brought him straight to the Heart of Her Son Jesus Christ. He started going to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Vermont and in May 2008 (the month of Mary), Zachary King entered the Catholic Church! After 26 years of involvement with the occult, Zachary has become a warrior for Jesus Christ and wants to share his knowledge for the protection of God's people. Zachary's testimony is an inspiration that proves how great God's mercy & forgiveness truly are and above all shows the depth of His love for us. Zachary King is currently living in Kansas. We're all going to die. But while we are alive, it's up to us how we understand and deal with that fact. In the United States especially, there is a tendency to not face up to the reality of death, and to assume that our goal should be to struggle at all costs to squeeze every last minute out of life. The Death Positive movement aims to change that, helping people to both face up to death on a personal and cultural level, and to give themselves more control over the manner of their own deaths. One of the leaders in this movement is today's guest, Megan Rosenbloom, who works as a medical librarian by day. We talk about attitudes toward death around the world, the differences between dying at home and in a hospital, the importance of autonomy in old age, and how individuals and societies can cope with the ultimate inevitability that comes with being alive. In 2016 she won a Mover & Shaker award from Library Journal. She is active in the Death Positive movement, serving as the co-founder and director of the Death Salon. The Road Ahead? Patron-Driven Acquisition Might Become... Library patrons make use of many forms of content: journals, ebooks, videos, audio tracks, archival documents, musical scores, etc. Each of these content types is amenable to PDA and the technology certainly exists to deliver each of these content types in PDA. So what stands in the way? We consider the prospects for a future-state of PDA that is multimedia, universal in its publisher/provider inclusion and delivered in an "e-commerce," if you will, environment where the content providers and the library can engage in negotiated agreement on item subscription charges and the trigger to purchase, rather than these being set by the aggregator. In this panel we explore three trends propelling us toward this future state and three trends hindering this future state, and will solicit feedback from participants as to other trends we may have missed. Propelling: 1. Continually tightening library budgets 2. Gradual emergence of affordable, patron-driven models like ReadCube 3. Decreasing demonstrable value of "commodity collections," especially in print and especially in research libraries, moving us towards digitization of rare and unique collections for consumption on demand Hindering: 1. The emergence of a standard for a platform 2. Flexible terms on triggers and prices 3. Strong culture of "institutional ownership" and collection building in libraries   Rick Anderson Associate Dean for Collections & Scholarly Communication University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Rick Anderson is Associate Dean for Scholarly Resources & Collections in the J. Katherine Albrecht is the Founder and Director of CASPIAN (Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering) and host of The Katherine Albrecht Show. She's the author of, "The Spychips Threat: Why Christians Should Resist RFID and Electronic Surveillance" and "Spychips: How Major Corporations and Government Plan to Track Your Every Purchase and Watch Your Every Move. "   Facebook recently conducted an experiment on its users, without their knowledge. Albrecht explains why this was wrong on so many levels and if Facebook will be punished for its actions.    Albrecht then discusses why RFIDs are against Christian principles. Corporations track our spending habits for marketing purposes. The government does it for security purposes. Albrecht talks about what the big deal is.   Dr. Katherine Albrecht is the director of CASPIAN (Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering), an organization she founded in 1999 to advocate free-market, consumer-based solutions to the problem of retail privacy invasion.     Katherine is widely recognized as one of the world's leading experts on consumer privacy. She regularly speaks on the consumer privacy and civil liberties impacts of new technologies, with an emphasis on RFID and retail issues. She has testified on RFID technology before the Federal Trade Commission, state legislatures, the European Commission, and the Federal Reserve Bank, and she has given over a thousand television, radio and print interviews to news outlets all over the world. Her efforts have been featured on CNN, NPR, the CBS Evening News, Business Week, and the London Times, to name just a few.     Executive Technology Magazine has called Katherine "perhaps the country's single most vocal privacy advocate" and Wired magazine calls her the "Erin Brockovich" of RFID". Her success exposing corporate misdeeds has earned her accolades from Advertising Age and Business Week and caused pundits to label her a PR genius.     Katherine is co-author of "Spychips: How Major Corporations Plan to Track your Every Move with RFID." Two days prior to its release, Spychips flew the top of the Amazon bestseller charts, hitting number one as a "Mover & Shaker," making its way to the top-ten nonfiction bestseller list, and spending weeks as a Current Events bestseller. Within its first four weeks alone, the book sold thousands of copies, and the journalistic and privacy communities called it "brilliantly written," "stunningly powerful," and "scathing." In a nod to the book's focus on freedom, Spychips was awarded the prestigious Lysander Spooner Award for Advancing the Literature of Liberty and named "the best book on liberty" for 2005.     Katherine is a highly sought-after public speaker, informing audiences across Europe and North America with her well-researched, compelling, and often chilling accounts of how retail surveillance technology threatens our privacy. She is a frequent guest on radio programs worldwide, logging over 500 hours of airtime with her proven ability to entertain an audience and generate listener calls.     Katherine graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in International Marketing.
