In this podcast we are talking about fertility and its' relationship to the very survival of our species. It is an indicator of the health of a population and important in the survival of the fittest theory... that is "Natural Selection"."Dr. Marina" Straszak Suri has over 30 years of experience as an OBGYN doctor where she takes a holistic functional approach to patient care. She is also an assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. She is author of the book "Optimize Your Fertility Naturally", a holistic guide to achieving a healthy pregnancy. It's a book to help both women and men learn proven lifestyle strategies to help them increase their chance of natural conception and a healthy pregnancy.TIMESTAMPS:00:00 Intro Snip01:06 Introduce Dr. Marina Strashzak-Suri03:45 Why aren't people reproducing?04:58 Fertility rates compared to the National Debt06:45 What does fertility rate have to do with health?07:46 how stress interferes with fertility09:38 How do you manage the stresses that interfere with fertility?10:50 What is the difference between mainstream medicine and functional medicine?12:00 How does mainstream medicine manage fertility problems?16:25 What are some examples of results and testimonials from your work?18:38 How does your practice work and who can be a patient?22:08 What is your recommended app for stress management?23:40 What are the Warrior Versus Worrier gene and what influences them?25:15 Do you have a favorite genetic test?
On this, our 306th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss men and women, relationships and strategies. What is actually true of young women right now? Is the manosphere onto some uncomfortable and deep truths, or do they suffer from sampling and confirmation bias? What role is porn playing? Social media? Is the nonsense that emerged from #MeToo, with regard to blaming all men, seeing an analog now in the blaming of women? However: men and women are different. Women are more likely to think they have a “right to be right,” to embrace ideologies that privilege victims and grievances, and to be neurotic. Just as encouraging men to embrace their emotional side can enhance many men's lives, encouraging women to embrace the physical world is likely to enhance their lives. Finally: a book recommendation (Playground).*****Our sponsors:Manukora: the most delicious and nutritious honey you'll ever have. The standard view of evolution is that living things are shaped by cold-hearted competition. And there is no doubt that today's plants and animals carry the genetic legacy of ancestors who fought fiercely to survive and reproduce. But in this hour that we first broadcast back in 2010, we wonder whether there might also be a logic behind sharing, niceness, kindness ... or even, self-sacrifice. Is altruism an aberration, or just an elaborate guise for sneaky self-interest? Do we really live in a selfish, dog-eat-dog world? Or has evolution carved out a hidden code that rewards genuine cooperation?Sign up for our newsletter!! On this, our 305th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss evolution, including major transitions from sea to land (early amphibians), and back again (e.g. whales), and the evidence. Where should we expect gaps in the fossil record, and why? How are adaptations to space and time analogous to one another? Then: lab grown pig fat is combined with plant protein and turned into meatballs that pretend to be pork. What could go wrong? Prediction: they'll be carcinogenic. Finally: GLP-1s—e.g. Ozempic—have so many side effects. Now on people's radar: they decrease drive and pleasure in all things, including libido.*****Our sponsors:Everyday Dose: Coffee plus collagen, mushrooms & nootropics – delicious! On this, our 304th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss the mainstream media's pivot, in which they now tentatively accept that some children have died from the mRNA Covid shots. We discuss failing trust in science, why it will not be quick to fix the institutions or to people them with honest scientists, and the rebels in the hills who are keeping the flame alive. Also, the application of the phrase “safe and effective” to products that are neither. Then: hominids have been making and controlling fire for far longer than we had thought. The Darwin-Wallace framework stands tall, but there are places where the seams show, where life presses back with its own kind of intention. Scott Turner guides us through those overlooked corners, tracing the ideas that slipped between theory and experience. We find organisms not as passive machines, but as players in a deeper, older rhythm. And in that recognition, the story of evolution widens into something more awake, more alive.PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-showHOMEBREW MUSIC - Check out our new album!Hard Copies (Vinyl): FREE SHIPPING https://demystifysci-shop.fourthwall.com/products/vinyl-lp-secretary-of-nature-everything-is-so-good-hereStreaming:https://secretaryofnature.bandcamp.com/album/everything-is-so-good-here00:00 Go! 00:09:00 Evolution's Philosophical Foundations 00:12:00 Linnaeus and Early Taxonomy 00:18:00 Idealism vs. Darwinian Thought 00:23:27 Ideological Divide in Evolutionary Theory 00:25:03 Early Evolutionary Inquiry and Natural Theology 00:29:00 Darwin's Voyage and Observations 00:33:57 Intelligence, Purpose, and Evolution 00:37:30 Geological and Evolutionary Gradualism vs. Catastrophism 00:41:40 Darwin & Wallace: Collaboration and Legacy 00:46:34 Mutationism vs. Natural Selection 00:49:44 Reconciling Mutationism and Darwinism 00:53:00 The Eclipse of Darwinism and Rediscovery of Mendel 00:56:14 Evolution, Loss of Purpose and Agency 01:00:30 Darwin's Pangenesis Theory 01:09:06 Biology, Culture, and Evolution 01:11:07 Evolutionary Theories and Future Directions #history, #consciousness, #evolution, #criticalthinking,#physicspodcast, #philosophypodcast MERCH: Rock some DemystifySci gear : https://demystifysci-shop.fourthwall.com/AMAZON: Do your shopping through this link: https://amzn.to/3YyoT98DONATE: https://bit.ly/3wkPqaDSUBSTACK: https://substack.com/@UCqV4_7i9h1_V7hY48eZZSLw@demystifysci RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/2be66934/podcast/rssMAILING LIST: https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S SOCIAL: - Discord: https://discord.gg/MJzKT8CQub- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/DemystifySci- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DemystifySci/- Twitter: https://twitter.com/DemystifySciMUSIC: -Shilo Delay: https://g.co/kgs/oty671
On this, our 303rd Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss the recommendation to stop vaccinating newborns against Hepatitis B, as just handed down by ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) for the CDC. Why were newborns whose mothers do not have Hep B, being vaccinated against a disease that is contracted through sexual activity and dirty needles? We discuss claims of “safe and effective,” risk stratification, the childhood vaccine schedule, and what “individual-based decision-making” will mean for parents and doctors. Then, new research: tattoo ink induces inflammation in lymph nodes, and changes the immune response to vaccination. Finally: an homage to Tom Stoppard, playwright extraordinaire, author of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Arcadia, and so much more. Peter Godfrey-Smith, Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Sydney, explores the evolutionary roots of consciousness by surveying animal evolution and the emergence of felt experience in several lineages. He examines two central philosophical questions: how such experience might arise gradually, existing in partial forms, and whether it represents a single unified feature with variations or instead a cluster of distinct traits. Author of "Darwinian Populations and Natural Selection," and "Living on Earth: Forests, Corals, Consciousness and the Making of the World," Godfrey-Smith brings his expertise in philosophy of biology and mind to illuminate how consciousness may have emerged and why its origins remain a profound puzzle. On this, our 301st Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss grief and mourning, and what makes us human. How many distinctly human traits will we prune away before we realize that we have gone too far, that there is too little remaining of humanity to be resurrected? From the Industrial Revolution(s) to that of AI, now we've got apps that threaten to keep your loved ones “alive” forever, with none of the valuable complexity that ancient grieving traditions offer. Then: bonobos show evidence of language use that is emergent—in which combinations of sounds mean more than the sum of their parts. And: all of the ostriches at Universal Ostrich Farm in British Columbia have been slaughtered, per a court order, despite there being no public or individual health justification for doing so.*****Our sponsors:Timeline: Accelerate the clearing of damaged mitochondria to improve strength and endurance: Go to http://www.timeline.com/darkhorse and use code darkhorse for 20% off your first order.Caraway: Non-toxic & beautiful cookware. Chris describes the sensory moments that changed how he pays attention, the guides who opened the landscape to his family, and small-scale wonders (including an antlion and a very near-miss with a cobra) that stayed with him long after the trip. In this episode you'll learn Why Botswana's slower pace and fewer vehicles make it a different kind of safari How biking through the bush reveals small-scale wildlife moments you won't see from a Land Cruiser Practical travel advice for families and first-time safari-goers (how to slow down, pack flexibly, and read local history) How local guides turn instincts and small signs into unforgettable wildlife sightings Don't miss these moments Opening conversation on why Botswana felt like the right first safari Riding on elephant trails with a bike-supported vehicle nearby The antlion pit: a small, gruesome, unforgettable predator encounter Lying on the salt pans under a vast African sky and hearing lions roar at dusk A near miss with a massive cobra while answering nature's call Meet this episode's guest Chris Colin — Afar contributing writer and the traveler at the center of this episode Take this trip Contributing writer Chris Colin's eight-day Botswana itinerary was put together by Teresa Sullivan, cofounder of Mango African Safaris, who specializes in family travel. The trip featured a Natural Selection cycling safari into the Makgadikgadi Pans and exploring the Okavango Delta. From $2,444 per person, per day. Learn more about your ad choices. Today we discuss Harvard, higher ed, public health, AI, and political cheating. Harvard has announced the suspension of several graduate programs, as well as hiring and other budget freezes, claiming poverty due to the suspension of federal grants. But Harvard's revenue last year was $6.7 billion, and their losses amount to 1.7% of that. Meanwhile, Trump wants Harvard to run trade schools. Then: vaccinologist Paul Offit admits that natural immunity was always superior to vaccine-induced immunity—if you survived the infection—but that this was not a matter of public health policy because Americans couldn't handle the nuance. And: Google's AI fabricated a criminal history, and is now being sued. This week we continue our fascinating conversation with biochemist, intelligent design advocate, and author Dr. Michael Behe, looking back over three decades since he first published Darwin's Black Box in 1996. On this episode, we will discuss some of the challenges facing origin of life research. From Michael's personal website: Michael Behe is Professor of Biological Sciences at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and a Senior Fellow at Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978. Behe's current research involves delineation of design and natural selection in protein structures. In his career he has authored over 40 technical papers and two books, Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution and The Edge of Evolution: The Search for the Limits of Darwinism, which argue that living system at the molecular level are best explained as being the result of deliberate intelligent design. The books have been reviewed by the New York Times, Nature, Philosophy of Science, Christianity Today, and many other periodicals. Darwin's Black Box has sold over 250,000 copies and was internationally reviewed in over one hundred publications. Both National Review and World magazine named it as one of the 100 most important books of the 20th century.Behe has presented and debated his work at major universities throughout North America and England.More about Darwin's Black BoxAudio Clips Featured in the Broadcast:Paul Davies: https://youtu.be/q4LnWlOKQFA?si=92PafZrUWecexarMRichard Dawkins: https://youtu.be/HJY5KKDrygI?si=kIyKZjIP26qsoGKBJerry Coyne: https://youtu.be/QOsNhQeUwk0?si=_BS67GjvyjItxeCVFree Resources from Watchman Fellowship Naturalism: https://www.watchman.org/Naturalism/ProfileNaturalism.pdfScientism: https://www.watchman.org/scientism/ProfileScientism.pdfPanpsychism: https://www.watchman.org/files/ProfilePanpsychism.pdfPostmodernism: https://www.watchman.org/files/ProfilePostmodernism.pdfAtheism: https://www.watchman.org/profiles/pdf/atheismprofile.pdfAdditional ResourcesFREE: We are also offering a subscription to our 4-page bimonthly Profiles here: www.watchman.org/FreePROFILE NOTEBOOK: Order the complete collection of Watchman Fellowship Profiles (around 700 pages -- from Astrology to Zen Buddhism) in either printed or PDF formats here: www.watchman.org/NotebookSUPPORT: Help us create more content like this. Today we discuss MAHA, vaccines, Covid, autism, and ostriches. Senator Ron Johnson held a hearing on the corruption of science, at which Jake Scott (MD), Toby Rogers (PhD), and lawyer Aaron Siri testified about vaccine safety testing and the relationship between vaccines and autism. The new MAHA Strategy report attributes poor diet, aggregation of environmental chemicals, lack of physical activity, chronic stress, and overmedicalization to the decline in children's health. Meanwhile, people who have been fooled by the fear campaign celebrate getting their newest Covid boosters. And in Canada, ostriches are at risk of being killed because of a misunderstanding of immunity, but people are fighting back. The immune system that defends the body politic is discovering how to defeat the infection. The battle is over the public consciousness. While we were livestreaming, news broke that Charlie Kirk was shot during an event in Utah and sadly passed away shortly after. “Charlie Kirk was a beautiful person. He died engaging his foes honorably. I truly hope he's right about the universe and is receiving his reward. I'm beyond heartbroken for his lovely family—we must take care of them. On the last two episodes of AP, we talked with Tricia Scribner about how theistic evolution impacts how we understand the God of the Bible. On the next two episodes, we will be following up with a conversation with biochemist Dr. Michael Behe, author of his widely popular 1996 book Darwin's Black Box. We will delve into the challenges molecular design and structure within living cells poses to traditional Neo-Darwinian concepts of evolution by means of natural selection and discuss how Dr. Behe believes intelligent design is the better scientific hypothesis. Both National Review and World magazine named it as one of the 100 most important books of the 20th century.Behe has presented and debated his work at major universities throughout North America and England.More about Darwin's Black BoxAudio Clip of Kenneth Miller Featured in the Beginning: https://youtu.be/c_qNaCff7JY?si=bjypBWctbLTvlucZFree Resources from Watchman Fellowship Naturalism: https://www.watchman.org/Naturalism/ProfileNaturalism.pdfScientism: https://www.watchman.org/scientism/ProfileScientism.pdfPanpsychism: https://www.watchman.org/files/ProfilePanpsychism.pdfAtheism: https://www.watchman.org/profiles/pdf/atheismprofile.pdfAdditional ResourcesFREE: We are also offering a subscription to our 4-page bimonthly Profiles here: www.watchman.org/FreePROFILE NOTEBOOK: Order the complete collection of Watchman Fellowship Profiles (around 700 pages -- from Astrology to Zen Buddhism) in either printed or PDF formats here: www.watchman.org/NotebookSUPPORT: Help us create more content like this. Today we discuss RFK Jr. the CDC, autism and trans activism. Kennedy revealed this week that in 2002, the CDC destroyed data that showed that children who got the MMR vaccine before 36 months of age had far higher rates of autism than did those who get the vaccine later in life. An HHS report will soon be released that ties Tylenol use during pregnancy to autism—what does this tell us about past public health advice, safety and risk? How can we all become better at pattern recognition? Florida Surgeon General Joe Ladapo is moving away from vaccine mandates for all citizens, while the governors of the three West coast states are conflating “science” with “ideology” while pining for a Covid-era-style CDC. In trans land: comedy writer Graham Linehan was arrested for saying mean things on-line, while trans-activists are not arrested when they threaten to kick and punch those who don't believe that men can become women. We explore the mental illness of trans-deluded people, and discuss Vivian Wilson, Elon Musk's oldest son, who thinks he's a girl.*****Our sponsors:Timeline: Accelerate the clearing of damaged mitochondria to improve strength and endurance: Go to http://www.timeline.com/darkhorse and use code darkhorse for 10% off your order.Manukora: the most flavorful, delicious, and nutritious honey you'll ever have. Today we discuss the dust-up at the CDC, in which RFK Jr. fires the new director, after which other CDC officials resign, and eight former directors of the CDC pen a letter to the New York Times (as does Bernie Sanders) arguing that Kennedy is a hazard to our health. This follows a reveal from months ago that industry was collaborating to get rid of Kennedy. Also: What does Trump now think of Operation Warp Speed? How has industrialization affected our health? How are the words “vaccine” and “terrorist” being used in Orwellian ways? Is Kennedy a secret eugenicist, or is he—in fact—exactly the opposite? Finally: a new article on the harms and hazards of both SARS-CoV2 and the mRNA biologics said to counter the virus.*****Our sponsors:ARMRA: Colostrum is our first food, and can help restore your health and resilience as an adult. Today we discuss childhood, fitness, and self-defense; the through-line is freedom. First up: Illinois has become the first state in the Union to mandate mental health screening for children in grades 3 – 12, so that conditions from trauma to anxiety can be detected early. How mandatory will these screenings be? How confidential? What is anxiety, and why are children better off learning to experience and solve their own anxiety, than to be coddled at every turn? We argue that anxiety—like pain, and sadness—are signals from your brain and body that should be listened to rather than erased. Also: childhood is a time of exploration, of mixing reality with fantasy, and should not be a time when adults' fantasies are imposed on children. Then: the New York Times cannot abide that anything that RFK Jr. does or says makes sense. Finally: do people have the right to defend themselves inside their own homes? Have we forgotten habeas corpus? Are the foundations of democracy coming apart at the seams? *****Our sponsors:Branch Basics: Get 15% off Branch Basics with the code DARKHORSE at https://branchbasics.com/darkhorse #branchbasicspodJolie: Beautiful showerheads that filter out the garbage without reducing water pressure. Then: are there differences between moral panics and social contagions, and is the current focus on pedophilia one or both? Finally: how widespread is fraud in science? Today we discuss the reasons not to stay in your lane, wildlife in the Pacific Northwest, and whether Americans want a handout, or to be left alone. First: Bret responds to critique from Geert Vanden Bossche on his characterization of intramuscular vaccines and their capacity to produce mucosal immunity. Then: how science discovers reality, the risks of reductionism, and a hypothesis that generalists are more immune to corruption than specialists. Then: bald eagles and foxes compete to scavenge seal meat on the shores of the Salish Sea. Meanwhile in Canada, people are told they can't go into the woods. Today we discuss the cancellation of mRNA vaccine contracts by Secretary Kennedy. What are the risks, are they as limited as he suggests, and what can we look forward to from this technology in the future? Conversation includes Covid and the Covid shots, repurposed drugs, and the nature of science and knowledge. What does it mean for a claim to be credible—socially, or analytically? Today we discuss “gender affirming surgeries”, AI and the future of cognition, and wild foxes. Kaiser Permanente is pausing surgery on trans-presenting children—we discuss sex and gender, meaning and identity, delusion and madness. Then: unlike the physical multiverse, mental multiverses are common, and becoming more so, as AI makes it ever more difficult to know what is true. We discuss grief, and how our worlds must fork when we think, but do not know, that someone has died. Similarly, when events are unclear—who was responsible for the death of President Kennedy in 1963? Are aliens visiting Earth—we must keep multiple mental universes alive in our heads at once. Correctives to this include meeting people in person, and embracing belief systems that have timeless value. Finally: more wild foxes, this time trying to eat a raccoon carcass. Included: discussion of the evolution of territoriality, parental care, and animal behavior more generally.*****Our sponsors:Masa Chips: Delicious chips made with corn, salt, and beef tallow—nothing else—in loads of great flavors. Today we discuss Epstein, Trump, MAGA, and how we know what we think we know. The actual economy exists, as does the attention economy; now Bret introduces a new term: the leverage economy. This implies that there is a commodity that we cannot see, which can be used to coerce players to act in certain ways. We see evidence of this in academia, in the news, and in politics.
