Podcasts about Natural selection

Charles Darwin recognized that ants challenged his theory of natural selection. He even mentioned it in his book Origin of Species. He even asked how the situation with the lowly ant can ever be reconciled with his theory. He never did come up with an answer, and modern evolutionists still don't have any good answers.Darwin's problem was with the worker ants. Even though they are products of sexual reproduction, they differ greatly from their parents. They are each specialized with features their parents don't have so they can carry out their designated tasks in the nest. The problem is that these workers are sterile females, so they cannot pass on the traits that are unique from their parents. Modern evolutionists theorize that perhaps there were some lucky mutations that took place in queen ants through their evolutionary history. However, this explanation is not very credible since the oldest fossilized ants are identical to today's ants. That means that there is no evidence of evolution in ants over a period of 70 million "evolutionary" years. Of course, we at Creation Moments don't accept claims that the world is that old.Perhaps God, in His foreknowledge, designed ant society this way to foil Darwin and those who have thought like him throughout history. Whatever the case, here is evidence that the ant neither evolved nor could have possibly evolved.Genesis 6:19“And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.”Prayer: Dear Father, with wisdom You have designed Your creation to bear witness to You. I, too, praise Your Name. Amen.REF.: CRSnet, "Evolution, Sex and the Ant" To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1232/29?v=20251111

On this, our 345th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss immigration, AI, and rawness. First: a new Harper's article chronicles the effects on local people of the mass migration across the Darién Gap in Panama between 2021 and 2025, and what has happened since the number of people coming up from Colombia has dropped to a trickle. The reporting on the ground is excellent—human and honest—while the political analysis is naïve at best. Then: what is it to be raw, how is it inherently human, and what is its relationship to grief, and to AI? *****Our sponsors:  Cozy Earth: Head to https://cozyearth.com and use code DARKHORSE for an exclusive 20% off on home and sleepwear.Puori: Clean and safe supplements, lab tested and guaranteed. On this, our 344th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss new cats, fat bears, and overwhelmed frogs. The tilcayo, a newly named species of cat from Bolivia, is part of a group of New World “tiger cats” that live on the outskirts of the Amazon basin. We discuss Carnivoran relationships, cats more specifically, and what is known about the history and ecology of the tilcayo in particular. Then: it's fat bear week at Katmai National Park in Alaska, where grizzlies are fattening themselves on salmon for the Winter ahead; we discuss hibernation, reproductive diapause, and general chonkiness in bears. Finally: female Cope's gray treefrogs have a harder time choosing good mates when there's a lot of noise, and when there are too many suitors—kind of like how women often make bad choices when confronted with chaos and wingmen.*****Our sponsors:Cowboy Colostrum: Get 25% Off Cowboy Colostrum with code Darkhorse at https://cowboycolostrum.com/darkhorse.CrowdHealth: Pay for healthcare with crowdfunding instead of insurance. On this, our 343rd Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss logic and scientific thinking, as it is done on politically hot topics (e.g. 9/11, Charlie Kirk), and on calmer topics like whether retrievers like to fetch (or just think that we like them to fetch), and whether domestic cats see people as big, clumsy cats. Putting all the hypotheses on the table, working hard to falsify even—especially—your favorite ones—and ending up with one left standing, is the scientific way, and how we arrive at answers that are most likely to be true.*****Our sponsors:Ridge: Upgrade your wallet today! We had the best chat with author and all round icon, THE Clare Edge!Clare's new book NATURAL SELECTION sounds like everything we need, and we absolutely loved how intentional she is about everything in her writing career! We cant wait for you all to tune in! But first, more about Clare:Clare Edge is an author (and witch) who was raised in the Rocky Mountains, where she learned to be “bear aware” before she was taught about “stranger danger.” She's a huge theater nerd and a recovering academic and is rarely found without a tarot deck nearby. Clare's cozy middle-grade fantasy series Accidental Demons was a New York Public Library Best Book for Kids and a Cybils Award finalist. On this, our 341st Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss two lives well-lived, both of which ended on August 31, 2026: our beloved labrador Maddie, and Wendell Berry. Maddie was adventurous and loyal; she helped raise our children; and she gave unconditional love. Wendell Berry was a writer, an environmentalist, and a philosopher and defender of the land, and of traditional ways of being and doing. On this, our 340th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss the recent flash flood on the border of Nepal and Tibet, climate science, and the nature of evidence. What commonalities are there between a glacial dam breaking and flooding the valley below, taking out towns and villages; Dry Falls and the Columbia River Gorge in Washington state; the Boxing Day tsunami in the Indian Ocean; and the 2011 earthquake that resulted in the destruction of the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan? In some cases we have to infer what happened; in some cases we have direct observation; in all cases we have to construct a plausible story that fits all of the evidence. Meanwhile in climate science, a new paper reconstructs NOAA data from 1,200 weather stations from over 100 years, uses a different metric than NOAA does to describe the data, and concludes that the world—or at least the coterminous U.S.—is not heating up in the way we have been told. On this, our 339th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss the rise of fanaticism in the context of Jason Arday—the former Cambridge professor who was under fire for plagiarism and fabulism, and was recently found dead. Arday benefitted from the progressive stack, and played up both his blackness and autism; he was also an actual marathoner and a human being. There can be no nuance on either side—either he is beloved and his name is chanted at a gathering at Trafalgar Square, or he is denounced by the anti-woke (including race realists). Other examples of cases where fanaticism is met by fanaticism on the other side, when there should be some people who hold an intermediate position, include: Covid vaxxers vs anti-vaxxers; traditionalists vs libertarians; and climate science deniers vs enthusiasts.*****Our sponsors:Sundries Farm: Extraordinary hand grown and harvested garlic from a family farm on the volcanic soils of Idaho. On this, our 338th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss the WNBA, and the surveillance state. At the WNBA, only women can play, but they don't define what a woman is; as such, two former NBA players have declared their eligibility for next year's WNBA draft. In humans, as in all mammals, sex is binary and immutable. This is simple and fundamental, and denying it is delusional. Then: Toka is an Israeli company that advertises “frictionless surveillance.” Toka's technology can locate cameras not their own, remotely access them, and change footage, both previous and live; and they can disappear evidence that any changes have been made. Natural Selections label head strips out Jackson's looseness and replaces it with gritty disco punk… There was a young Jackson called Thomass, Whose grooves were decidedly bonkers, He twisted his rhythms, And psychedelicisms, And built wonky house out of conkers. Carlo Sine said “I'll take that Jam, And flip it as hard as I can,” He made it go gritty, A punk disco ditty, For sweaty rooms and also Milan. Natural Selections cried “Ten! We'll never see grooves like these again!” So they pressed it on wax, Paid the Submarea tax, And Portobello Mafia rode out of its den. Thomass Jackson has been hovering around the Natural Selections orbit for a while now — guest mix here, remix there — but somehow never quite landed on the catalogue proper. That changes today. Portobello Mafia is his first official release on the imprint and it sounds exactly like you'd want it to: wonky, playful, slightly psychedelic house music that tilts just far enough off-axis to keep you guessing. Both originals do that thing where the groove feels wrong until it feels completely right. We're premiering Carlo Sine's remix of “Jam” today, which takes the EP somewhere else entirely. The label head strips out the looseness and replaces it with grit – punk disco built for the part of the night when the small talk stops and everyone just gets on with it. Portobello Mafia EP is out August 13. Stream below.

Philosopher Stefan Molyneux takes on the claim that there is no such thing as truth and shows how that idea falls apart under its own weight. He answers listener questions on natural selection, envy of talent, marriage as a bond for children, human nature outside of force, just war and free speech under surveillance.Questions:Why do humans hate Natural Selection? It is clearly the most obvious structure of the designer...Treating the institution of marriage as a sort of clown car with way too many, no longer strictly related to the idea, underlying concepts crammed in, how would you strip it down to its bare minimum?Listened to your Sunday morning chat. On this, our 337th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss how Western society is treating its children. First, the good news: the Department of Justice, working with AGs in Texas and Ohio, have effectively shuttered two major “gender care” clinics, and extracted promises to create clinics to support people in detransitioning. It's about time. But: why is there a Trump banner on the DoJ? This is not typically how Americans do things, for good reason. Add the Trump branded passport, and $1 coin, and there's a definite Dear Leader vibe going on. Politics has taken over analytical thought—today, all you have to do is know who stands for a thing, and you know whether you do or do not agree. (See the protein panic currently taking blue-media outlets by storm.) Then: a Yale law professor says the insane part out loud. Finally, a guy caught taking out Flock cameras suddenly has a lot of friends, at least on-line.*****Our sponsors:Timeline: Accelerate the clearing of damaged mitochondria to improve strength and endurance: Go to http://www.timeline.com/darkhorse and use code darkhorse for 20% off your first order.ARMRA Colostrum is an ancient bioactive whole food that can strengthen your immune system. Markus Eder is the final European skier on the podcast and he's arguably the most important. Markus's career took off after he won an internet wild card to Nine Knights in 2010, then it exploded even more at Red Bull Linecatcher, and if that wasn't enough, he lit the web on fire with his 2021 "The Ultimate Run" release.  Honestly, Markus may be the most versatile skier I've ever had on the podcast. A bold statement but the guy was a slopestyle athlete on the Italian Olympic team in Sochi in 2014, he's a film skier that consistently puts out segments, he was a Freeride World Tour athlete who won the whole tour in 2019, and he's spent the past two seasons standing on the podium at Travis Rice's prestigious Natural Selection events. I've been trying to get Markus on the show for years and this timed perfectly for him to give his opinions on FIS, federations, and the Olympics. Red Bull. Volkl, and "Legs of Steel" partner in crime, Paddy Graham asks the Inappropriate Questions. Markus Eder Show Notes: 3:00: Knee, Olympics, how it used to be, no coaching, Italian Team issues, and freeride in the Olympics 22:00: Elan Skis:  Over 75 years of innovation that makes you better. 23:00: Will this impact film skiers, passion and style, his parents, racing, skiing year-round, knowing nothing about the new school, snowblading with snowboarders, and twin tips 42:00: Outdoor Research: The  best is developed and tested in the brutal conditions the PNW and beyond 43:00: Nine Knights, Palmer skis, Line Catcher, MSP Movement, The Ultimate Run, and FWT, and more but I forgot to keep taking notes  78:00: Inappropriate Questions with Paddy Graham

On this, our 336th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss the Covid Era in light of the Senate Hearing on the testimony of Anthony Fauci. First: excerpts from several Covid Era Stories, reminding us of the atrocities, tragedies, and ludicrosities (yes) of that time. Then: is Fauci's refusal to answer any questions put to him by members of the committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs evidence that he is, in effect, a made man? We the people deserve answers, and the government should work for us—but it does not appear to do so. The polarization is as stark as possible: democrats think Fauci is science, republicans see Fauci as a great harm to science.*****Our sponsors:Xlear: Xylitol nasal spray that acts as prophylaxis against respiratory illnesses by reducing the stickiness of bacteria and viruses. Do intelligent, extraterrestrial aliens exist? How might evolution explain their existence? Or can it? Here on this week's Apologetics Profile, we discuss intelligent design and the evolutionary assumptions behind the possible existence of ETs with Kristin Marais and Casey Luskin of Discovery Institute. Casey Luskin is a scientist and an attorney with graduate degrees in science and law, giving him expertise in both the scientific and legal dimensions of the debate over evolution. He holds a PhD in Geology from the University of Johannesburg He earned a law degree from the University of San Diego. His B.S. and M.S. degrees in Earth Sciences are from the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Luskin has been a California-licensed attorney since 2005, practicing primarily in the area of evolution-education in public schools and defending academic freedom for scientists who face discrimination because of their support for intelligent design (ID). https://www.discovery.org/p/luskin/Kristin Marais has roughly 15 years of educational experience spanning the traditional building classroom, online classroom, curriculum development, and tutoring. She graduated from the University of California Riverside with a BS in biochemistry and then completed a MS in Teaching through Western Washington University. On this, our 334th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss data centers, surveillance cameras, and the Cartesian Crisis. Do Americans dislike data centers because they're bad for us, or because foreign agents want us to dislike them? The NYT and Alethea say that foreign agents are creating content made to look home-grown that is not, but the support for the arguments is weak. Meanwhile, the high-voltage lines going up near people's homes could have the aesthetic and—more important—health costs mitigated if those lines were put underground, due to the potential to insulate the magnetic fields. Also: Flock cameras are going up all over America. The stated goal is to track license plates, but our privacy and civil liberties are at stake. The Flock CEO compares those who are taking out Flock cameras to antifa, and Bret introduces a new idea: They Don't Actually Give a Shit About Us.*****Our sponsors:American Financing: NMLS #182334 nmlsconsumeraccess.org. On this, our 333rd Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss how to avoid mosquitoes without DEET, whether Gen Z is really doing better than the generations before it (as some research and headlines proclaim), and what the hell happened to Wikipedia. First: catnip is as effective as DEET in dissuading mosquitoes (but you might end up attracting cats). Next: New research suggests that GenZ is doing great, financially, but dig just a little, and find the research deeply flawed. Finally: Larry Sanger named and led Wikipedia in 2001, and he has now been permanently blocked from the site. How do the Four Strands of the Fabric of Reality - Quantum Physics, Computation, Epistemology and Evolution by Natural Selection hold together? What does taking them each seriously and all of them together seriously? Is it possible to construct a worldview without one of them or based on a single one alone? What do they imply about free will and consciousness? Doesn't making progress require us to assume them false? All this and more.

On this, our 332nd Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss America's 250th birthday. In 1776, both Common Sense and the Declaration of Independence provided self-evident truths that prompted the formation of a new nation. Built on optimism and an entrepreneurial spirit, the United States of America is fracturing along political lines, each side incapable of seeing the humanity of people who believe different things from themselves. In those 250 year old documents we see implicit recognition of trade-offs, game theory and emergence—all of which are just as fundamental now as they were then. As part of this discussion we cover patriotism, antifa, dual vs hierarchical loyalties, Trump, the World Cup, and taking advantage of breaks.*****Our sponsors:Timeline: Accelerate the clearing of damaged mitochondria to improve strength and endurance: Go to http://www.timeline.com/darkhorse and use code darkhorse for 20% off your first order.ARMRA Colostrum is an ancient bioactive whole food that can strengthen your immune system. On this, our 331st Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss sunscreen and vegans. It's Summer, and the sun is out! Should you slather yourself in sunscreen, stay indoors, or seek moderate exposure to the sun that grows in intensity that more your skin becomes acclimated to the season? The last, of course. Research has found that sunscreen use may be positively correlated with skin cancer, but a) “sunscreen” is not just one thing, and most but not all sunscreen is positively toxic, and b) all cause mortality is lower in people who get regular (non-sunscreened) sun exposure, so even if sunscreen does lower your risk of skin cancer—the sun is protecting your health in other ways. Also consider ditching the sunglasses, and donning a hat. Then: even the New York Times can't figure out whose team they're on, as a vegan in Portland tries to get Oregonians to outlaw hunting, fishing, animal research, conventional livestock production, and “lethal pest control.”*****Our sponsors:Mud/WTR: Start your new morning ritual & get up to 43% off your @MUDWTR with code DarkHorse at http://mudwtr.com/DarkHorse #mudwtrpodCaraway: save up to $230 on the 12 piece cookware set vs buying the products individually; include minis duo & save up to $350. If intelligent design is so apparent in living organisms and in the cosmos, why don't more people accept it? Here on part two of our conversation with President of Reasons to Believe, biochemist, author, and apologist, Dr. Fuz Rana, we explore this question and reveal how people do in fact recognize design, but yet suppress that truth. Fuz will give us some winsome wisdom about how we as Christians can intelligently engage in the theology-science dialogue and help unbelievers see Christ more clearly. Fuz's Testimony and Background: "As a graduate student studying biochemistry, I was captivated by the cell's complexity, elegance, and sophistication. The inadequacy of evolutionary scenarios to account for life's origin compelled me to conclude that life must come from a Creator. Reading through the Sermon on the Mount convinced me that Jesus really was who Christians claimed him to be: Lord and Savior. Still, encouraging others to join me in following Christ wasn't important to me—until my father died. His death changed that. In 1999, I left my position in research and development at a Fortune 500 company to join Reasons to Believe. I felt the most important thing I could do as a scientist was to show Christians and non-Christians alike the powerful scientific evidence for God's existence and for the reliability of the Bible."Free Resources from Watchman Fellowship Naturalism: https://www.watchman.org/Naturalism/ProfileNaturalism.pdfScientism: https://www.watchman.org/scientism/ProfileScientism.pdfPanpsychism: https://www.watchman.org/files/ProfilePanpsychism.pdfAtheism: https://www.watchman.org/profiles/pdf/atheismprofile.pdfAdditional ResourcesFREE: We are also offering a subscription to our 4-page bimonthly Profiles here: www.watchman.org/FreePROFILE NOTEBOOK: Order the complete collection of Watchman Fellowship Profiles (around 700 pages -- from Astrology to Zen Buddhism) in either printed or PDF formats here: www.watchman.org/NotebookSUPPORT: Help us create more content like this. On this, our 330th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss pride and fascism. In California, companies get preferential consideration for utilities contracts if they can demonstrate that they belong to June's most popular “oppressed” class—LGBTQ. Proof will be required, however. Evidence can take the form of “attempted parenting” with a same-sex partner, a therapist's letter confirming transgender status, or a TikTok account, among other things. Meanwhile among the GenZ's, 31% of young women identify as LGBTQ—and mostly it's B. Friends don't let friends play with venomous animals. In this one, Ian and Liv are joined by Ian's neighbor & Liv's former coworker Emma for the THIRD compilation of animal attacks! Tigers, alligators, bears, and venomous critters top the list in this installment of Natural Selection's finest moments. Also, Ian struggles learning new words. Emma is a feminist icon. Liv has childhood trauma associated with scorpions & iCarly.

"Evolution is a settled fact!" we're often told by scientists, science popularizers, and probably have seen this statement not a few times on social media. But there has been another, perhaps less-noticed trend in the evolutionary sciences today. There is an ever-increasing academic dissent against evolution by means of natural selection as the best explanation for the variety of life we see on Earth today. The more scientists probe the wonders of living organisms, and the stunningly overwhelming variety of species that exist today, the more improbable the Neo-Darwinian account of the diversification of species seems to many. This week on the Profile we feature a conversation with the President of Reasons to Believe, biochemist, author, and Christian apologist Dr. Fuz Rana. We'll discuss some of the key reasons why intelligent design in biology is seemingly making a comeback. We go beyond mere intelligent design though, and discuss the specifics of how design in biology and in the universe points us back to Scripture and ultimately to Christ. On this, our 329th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we continue to discuss the West. We begin with readings of glorious California—from Stegner to Chandler to Didion—and reminisce about our own time growing up in LA. Then: the elections in California seem rigged, and if your elections are rigged, you don't have a democracy. Paper polls worked; in-person voting worked; exit polls provided information. Why did our elections change? The system as it stands is an invitation to fraud. A democratic republic is the only viable alternative, and Democrats are destroying the goose that lays the golden eggs, which makes the marvelous life of most people—including the men singing about not taking it anymore--possible. Meanwhile in the state of Washington: the newest Executive Order demonstrates just how spineless, powerless, and in need of replacement, our leaders are. EO 26-01 purports to address menopausal and perimenopausal symptoms; instead, it is a pandering, bureaucratic, gameable, woke, anti-scientific mess. Here's a fact that should disturb you: scientists estimate your brain processes 11 million bits of information every single second — but you're only consciously aware of about 50. So the question isn't what you see. The question is: who chose what you don't see? Today on Makes Sense with Dr. JC, we're going into the natural selection of perception — why the reality you're living in may not actually be yours, and exactly what it takes to rewire your brain and take it back.   Follow Dr. JC Doornick and the Makes Sense Academy:► Makes Sense Substack - https://drjcdoornick.substack.com ► Instagram: / drjcdoornick ► Substack: / drjcdoornick ►Facebook:  / makessensepodcast ►YouTube:  / drjcdoornick     MAKES SENSE PODCAST Welcome to the Makes Sense with Dr. JC Doornick Podcast. On this, our 328th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss fires in the West, both literal and metaphorical. First: the mayoral race in LA, and race politics. Then: rioting in Paris after a soccer win—not mere hooliganism, but also due to race politics and immigration. The World Cup is coming to Seattle—but what to do about the homeless people? Build a “low barrier” tiny home community out of sight of the tourists, where drug addicts are encouraged to relocate. New public toilets in Seattle were destroyed within weeks, though—will tiny homes be sufficient to protect soccer fans? Also: it's pride month! At UCSC's “Gender Affirming Gear” closet, students can get free binders, packers, and tucking kits! Knitting it all together: What is the West, what are its tenets, and is it worth saving? On this, our 327th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss West coast politics, propaganda, and AI. First: the insurgent campaign of Spencer Pratt in the race for mayor of Los Angeles is going strong. He is by far the best hope for Los Angeles, given fires and filth, homelessness and crime, drugs and corruption. Then: propaganda from Iran is remarkably compelling. And: Bret proposes that the model of AI that we are living under is degenerate intellectual communism, and that we have been given no choice. On this, our 326th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss government and tyranny, environmental toxins and the media, eminent domain, and memories of childhood. Former Washington state governor Christine Gregoire says the state doesn't have an income problem, it's got a spending problem—and that unpredictability from legislators is making it impossible for the business community to plan. Stochasticity is impossible to adapt to—for humans, and for other species too. In the most expensive Congressional primary race in U.S. history, incumbent Thomas Massie lost in Kentucky; his opponent was substantively funded by AIPAC. Young people supported Massie; old people did not. The Department of Fish & Wildlife has declared the widely used herbicide atrazine no big deal—but it very much is, beginning with the well-established fact that it turns the frogs…not gay, but aggressive and dysfunctionally hermaphroditic. In Georgia, eminent domain is being invoked to “liberate” people from their houses. And we end with memories of idyllic childhoods in the forests of the Pacific Northwest.*****Our sponsors:MUDWTR: Start your new morning ritual & get up to 43% off your @MUDWTR with code DARKHORSE at http://mudwtr.com/darkhorse! #mudwtrpodSaunaSpace: deep radiant heat from red and infrared incandescence—detox and decrease pain, reverse screen fatigue and improve your mood. http://Sauna.Space/DarkHorse for 10% off sitewide.Helix: Excellent, sleep-enhancing, American-made mattresses. We sit down with one of the greatest snowboarders of all time, Jamie Lynn. It's hard to put into words what snowboarding would've become without the passion, creativity, style, and raw skateboard influence Jamie brought to the culture. From exploding onto the scene in the early '90s to staying relevant for over 35+ years, Jamie has had one of the most impactful careers in snowboard history. A true snowboarder's snowboarder. This conversation was recorded during the 2026 Natural Selection Tour and after wrapping up the podcast, one of my close friends Brin Alexander happened to walk by the room. I figured we had to capitalize on the moment and get Brin on the mic too. Brin is one of the most promising young snowboarders coming out of Canada right now and honestly one of the most talented riders on the planet. The definition of an all-terrain snowboarder; park, powder, street, side hits the guy can ride absolutely everything. Jamie and I dive into topics like fatherhood, the early days of snowboarding, the evolution of snowboard culture, and how brands have failed the industry in the past. We also talk about how companies can move forward in a way that actually represents snowboarding and builds something lasting. Brin and I catch up on filming, Natural Selection and what's next for the new generation of snowboarding. Really grateful to have both of these legends on the podcast. Jamie is undeniably one of the most influential riders of all time and Brin is well on his way. On this, our 325th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss Hanta virus and drought. First: what is the natural history of Hantavirus, do any Hantaviruses transmit directly from human to human, and what is going on with the M.V. Hondius, the cruise ship on which Hantavirus has made a stand? Given its mechanisms of action, Ivermectin is likely to treat Hantavirus (a negative sense single-stranded RNA virus), but the WHO dismisses the possibility. Moderna is working on a Hantavirus vaccine, even though the Number Needed to Treat is sky high. What is going on? Then: in Washington state, we're experiencing a very wet drought. The Department of Ecology has declared a drought (again), and the snow pack is low, but all other indicators—from rivers to reservoirs to soil moisture—are excellent. Cliff Mass, atmospheric scientist, puts the evidence in one place and calls bull on the drought diagnosis.*****Our sponsors:Xlear: Xylitol nasal spray that acts as prophylaxis against respiratory illnesses by reducing the stickiness of bacteria and viruses. On this, our 324th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss the 2028 presidential election, and bees, plants, and electrons. First: Kamala Harris is currently the front-runner for the Democratic nominee in 2028. Given her scant record of achievements, her capacity, and her campaign in 2024, how is this possible? Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would be a better choice. On the Republican side, Vance is the front-runner, as expected, but there are far more other options than on the Democratic side (DeSantis, Kennedy, Gabbard, to name a few). Then: flowers are negatively charged, bees become positively charged while flying, such that when bees arrive at flowers, pollen leaps on to bees. We discuss sensory modalities, communication between pollinators and pollen distributors, and how environmental EMF might disrupt such systems.*****Our sponsors:Ridge: Upgrade your wallet today! During this episode Martha Gill, the 2024 Queen of Crankworx and long time Marin Bikes athlete, shares her journey from cross-country racing and Olympic hopeful to enduro, Crankworx, Lucid and helping support the next generation of riders. In India, a painkiller commonly used in people but toxic to vultures, diclofenac, came out of patent, began to be used in cattle, and the vast majority of vultures in India died. Downstream effects include the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, and tens of billions of dollars in economic losses. Now in Africa, vultures are being poisoned intentionally, and a similar devastation is likely to happen. Vultures are ugly, smelly, and gross…and utterly central to the health of not just their ecosystems, but the people who live in and near them. Welcome to complex systems. Also: Katie Wilson, the mayor of Seattle, seems to be engaged in a kind of “scientific socialism,” akin to “scientific racism,” in which quasi-scientific ideas are used to justify (bad) policy.*****Our sponsors:Lovebird: Delicious, nutritious cereal made with real ingredients. On this, our 322nd Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss the Cartesian crisis, whether going to the moon is valuable, and college in the age of AI. Before the ads, we discuss the nature of knowledge, and whether paying attention all the time, to all the things, can backfire and make a personal less capable of comprehension. Later: why go to the moon? An op-ed writer at The Guardian says there's no point—there's nothing to see, no one to talk to. We discuss the value of science—not just in terms of what we become capable of doing, but also for the human values of awe and wonder, openness and curiosity. As humans, we must encourage discovery, innovation, and exploration; we cannot cave to the fearful, provincial, and bland. Finally: professors and students are in an arms race over AI. A better move would be to seek two wildly different educational modes: one in which no outside sources of knowledge are available at all (e.g. a remote site with no cell service), and classroom-based work that encourages engagement and learning from and with the AI.*****Our sponsors:Branch Basics: Get 15% off Branch Basics with the code DARKHORSE at https://branchbasics.com/darkhorse #branchbasicspodPuori: Amazingly clean and safe supplements and protein powders, lab tested and guaranteed. On this, our 321st Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss AI, Iran, Trump, emergencies in the state of Washington, and stories from the Covid era. Anthropic, which makes Claude, announced that they are halting the release of their latest model due to unexpected capacities it has revealed. We discuss trade-offs, exploration, and game theory as they pertain to bats and planes, cats and humans, and LLMs. Then: did Trump make a genocidal threat against Iran? And: what emergency in the state of Washington could possibly apply to college tuition, out-of-state militias, accurate representation of sex on government IDs, and responding to pandemics? Answer: all the legislature has to do to make their ideas referendum-proof is declare that they are responding to an emergency—they do not even have to say what the emergency is. Finally: our memories of the Covid Era have begun to fade and morph, but it is important that we keep them alive.*****Our sponsors:Xlear: Xylitol nasal spray that acts as prophylaxis against respiratory illnesses by reducing the stickiness of bacteria and viruses. On this, our 320th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss whether it can happen here, or again. It is genocide. Growing up in a secular Jewish household in the 1970s and ‘80s, Bret remembers many discussions of whether it could happen again, and where, but it seems to be assumed that the repeated targets of atrocities cannot themselves ever engage in atrocity. Is this true? We discuss lineage selection, the nature of history and memory, diaspora, Israel. Also, the belligerence of the U.S. again Iran. Then: Washington state is allowing non-citizens to become peace and corrections officers, but if any in those positions make mean gestures or social media posts, they can be fired. Toxicity of both stripes—masculine and feminine—are in command in our political landscape, and we seem to have no good options.*****Our sponsors:ARMRA Colostrum is an ancient bioactive whole food that can strengthen your immune system. On this, our 319th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss space mirrors and the state of Washington state. Reflect Orbital is a young company that hopes to put tens of thousands of mirrors in orbit around the planet, and deliver “full moon to high noon” levels of light anyplace on Earth, on demand (for the right price). What could go wrong? Also: Washington state has voted in the first ever income tax (for high earners), quick on the heels of its first ever capital gains tax, while still having some of the highest estate, sales, property, and fuel taxes in the country. Meanwhile, the cost of living is skyrocketing, and the quality of services declining. Our highways are third worst in the nation; our cities are filthy and unsafe; our schools are miseducating children (at best). On this, our 318th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss how to understand our universe: through logic, intuition, and probability, through keeping track of what we believe, and being willing to change our minds. Avoiding certainty is difficult, but necessary. On this, our 317th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss radiation and its impact on (rodent) health, and the 9th circuit's decision to let men use women's spas. First: research published in 2018 finds that low levels of non-ionizing radiation—like that emitted by cell phones and air pods—are actually associated with life extension in mice and rats. Don't get too excited—these are the same rodents whose breeding protocols have broken them in some counter-intuitive ways, including that low doses of toxins or radiation can actually slow down the cancer that will otherwise kill them. Then: Olympus Spa, a traditional Korean nude spa for women in the Seattle area, was told by the state of Washington, now upheld by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, that they must let men in, so long as those men think they're women. Judge VanDyke's dissent correctly summarizes the issue as one of “swinging dicks.”*****Our sponsors:CrowdHealth: Pay for healthcare with crowdfunding instead of insurance. It's way better. On this, our 316th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss health, science, and the Cartesian crisis as it relates to global events. First: a new paper finds that infection tends to lead to greater frailty in older people. This reverses the causality of Terrain Theory of Disease (frailty of the body leads to greater susceptibility of infection), and also provides support for a prediction made by Bret and his co-author Debbie Ciszek in the unpublished, longer version of their reserve capacity paper from 2002. Then: what we are seeing on our personal media feeds does not make us eye-witnesses to anything—not necessarily. Plato's Cave of Mirrors means that we are all fed different media diets, and skills such as observation, discernment, and hypothesis generation, inherently fail when nobody can establish what is actually true. Recommendation: start comparing notes with other people as to what they are seeing, rather than what they think it means.*****Our sponsors:NOBS: NOBS is doing a nationwide rollout into 917 Target stores. On this, our 315th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss war, breaches of promise, and manta rays. Why are we at war in Iran, when this president promised “no new wars”? Removing dictators and strongmen from the world is honorable—but will the Iranian people thrive after this move, or will this look more like Iraq? Can we reconcile what Secretary of State Rubio said about why we started the war, versus what Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said? Then: Kansas has reversed course on letting put a chosen gender identity on official documents rather than your biological sex—to the good—but they did so in a way guaranteed to create havoc and make things very hard for the people who need to get new IDs. These are people who broke no laws, but are being treated badly by the state as if they did. Finally: manta rays are extraordinary and deeply intelligent; we share footage and words about them. Finally, a shout out to Covid Era Stories.*****Our sponsors:Timeline: Accelerate the clearing of damaged mitochondria to improve strength and endurance: Go towww.timeline.com/darkhorse and use code darkhorse for 20% off your first order.Toups: Ready to give Toups a try? For Valentine's Day, Bret shares his thoughts on myths, love, and soulmates, and we discuss how relationships form—both in the abstract and in our case—and how relationships cannot be antagonistic or about short time horizons. Then: new research finds that drinking moderate amounts of coffee or tea—but not if decaffeinated—slows cognitive decline. And: is AI coming for us, and if so, how soon? How fast are LLM's evolving, whose work will they disappear, and is concern or hope the more constructive response? We can see some of how AI will change our world; what can we not yet see?
