In our first episode of "The Shine Strategy," I'm honored to speak with "Green Book" 2x Oscar-winning producer and writer Nick Vallelonga. The critically-acclaimed film won three Oscars and three Golden Globes and is based on the true story of Nick's father, Tony Vallelonga, who, in 1962, went on a tour in the Deep South with pianist Dr. Donald Shirley. Nick always knew he would tell his father’s important story about overcoming racism. Honoring Dr. Shirley's wishes, he waited until the brilliant composer passed away to make the film. Its themes of friendship, breaking the racial divide and how people really can change have impacted the globe. Nick discusses how he assembled his brilliant team, compiled the perfect cast, and the rest is cinematic history. Vegas Film Critic (Jeffrey K. Howard) speaks with Green Book Writer/Producer, Nick Vallelonga.
The controversial 2018 film "Green Book" that just won the Academy Award for Best Picture has it all: a white-savior narrative, cheesy New York Italian-American accents, and a series of cringeworthy tone-deaf scenes that aim to solve racism, but end up being more racist themselves in the end. Farrelly brother Peter directed this unfunny Oscar-bait that apparently either warmed the hearts of all the old white Academy members or was just the perfect anti-Netflix movie to pick so "Roma" wouldn't win. Often compared to "Driving Miss Daisy," it's actually more like "The Bodyguard," "The Odd Couple" and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." Very not-Italian-looking Viggo Mortensen plays Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga, an almost-illiterate, mobbed-up thug who uses violence to solve all of his problems. This movie paints him as a loving family man who will do anything to support them, when in reality he's an awful racist grifter who would never change his attitudes on a dime just because he hung out with one black person for a few weeks. Mahershala Ali plays Dr. Don Shirley (in a role he won an Best Supporting Actor Oscar for), a lonely genius pianist who hires Tony Lip as his bodyguard/driver so he doesn't get messed with while on tour in the 1962 Jim Crow American South. Though every time Tony saves him from trouble, he flips out like a baby for no reason. Linda Cardellini plays Dolores Vallelonga, the doting wife stock character who seems to be the only non-racist member of her entire family. There’s even supporting characters played by cheesy standup comedian Sebastian Maniscalco and the guy who played Donna's dad on "That '70s Show." Join us as we wonder how many times Nick Vallelonga (the main character’s real-life son) watched "GoodFellas" while writing this movie, as we make fun of Steven Spielberg's recent anti-streaming services comments, as we talk about how Paul Walker doesn't get enough grief for dating a 15 year old, and as we wonder if Mahershala Ali is secretly embarrassed this movie won him a second Oscar. Amy and special guest host Griffin Newman (The Tick, Blank Check) talk about last night’s Oscars, and unveil the winners of the first annual Spoolies! Plus: A heartwarming Christmas tune from Green Book screenwriter Nick Vallelonga. This episode is brought to you by Caavo (www.caavo.com code: UNSPOOLED) and Fracture (www.fractureme.com/UNSPOOLED).
Spoiler Alert! This podcast features a detailed discussion of the story portrayed in the film Green Book. If you haven’t seen it yet, and plan to, please save this podcast for later. The movie Green Book has earned accolades and attacks since it was released in December. The controversies are sure to be rekindled by 91st Academy Awards Sunday, Feb. 24 — Green Book received five Oscar nominations, including “best picture.” Earlier it garnered three Golden Globe awards, including “best supporting actor” for Mahershala Ali for his portrayal of acclaimed classical and jazz pianist Dr. Donald Shirley. And as a Hollywood biopic that’s “based on a true story,” it has drawn sharp criticism from Shirley’s family members, who say the film distorts and fabricates key elements of the musician’s “true story,” while ignoring powerful parts of his real story. Dr. Wilmer J. Leon III is an author and national radio host who interviewed Shirley’s brother, sister-in-law, and niece before the film was released. They say they were not contacted or consulted by producer/director Peter Farrelly or his screenplay co-writer, Nick Vallelonga. The story, fictionalized but inspired by actual characters, is based on the perspective of Vallelonga’s father, also known as “Tony Lip,” portrayed as a racist, Italian-American nightclub bouncer who was Shirley’s driver on a 1962 concert tour that took them deep into the Jim Crow south. In this podcast interview, Leon details a long list of what he thinks are inaccuracies in the film, from Shirley’s early life to his family relationships to the film’s insinuations that he was gay, a boozer, and a black man who’d never had fried chicken or listened to the music of Little Richard. While we don’t expect Hollywood versions of people’s lives to be accurate or literal portrayals, Leon feels that the wholesale changes to Shirley’s story — while purporting to tell his story using his name — are remarkable. Leon and, he argues, other African American observers see this as part of an all-too-familiar Hollywood pattern: using racial stereotypes to entertain white audiences with feel-good stories at the expense of black narratives. As Leon puts it, “There are all these tropes and stereotypes that they play to in the film, which make their story so much more plausible and acceptable to an audience, but just go against some of the fundamental elements and premises of who the guy really was.” Wilmer Leon is the host of Inside the Issues with Leon on Sirius/XM channel 126. You can read his commentary on Green Book here. The detailed critique we refer to, written by Brooke C. Obie, is here.
Well we did it! This is our last episode of our special Conversations with Oscar series for another year. We LIVE for this time of year, and even though this season was an odd one, we had so much fun talking about all eight of these films. In this last episode, we talk about Green Book. This story is also based on a true story, and it also looks at race relations during the civil rights era like BLACKkKLANSMAN, but maybe just a bit more cookie cutter. Nick Vallelonga told his fathers story well, despite the controversy from Dr. Shirleys family. Whether or not it's true, well thats a different story. At the end we stop and make a list of final ranking of all eight Best Picture films. Do any of ours match your list? Green Book should not exist. And yet, it does, and it's nominated for a whole bunch of Oscars this year. You know what else got nominated for an Oscar and won it? Crash! These movies are supposed to be about overcoming racism but it turns out they just perpetuate it, and also, they are bad movies. You don't need to watch Green Book, but you might want to know what the heck happens in it, as well as the actual story of Don Shirley's life (which is not contained in this movie), so here you go. Green Book is one of the front runners for Best Picture and there's no question about it. Who knew Peter Farrelly could direct something this good?
'Green Book' tells white people that it's all good! Racism, man! Good thing that's over, amirite? From a shaky, ill-conceived premise comes a shaky, ill-conceived White Savior movie directed, of course, by "Dumb & Dumber" director Peter Farrelly. That said, Vigo and Mahershala do very good jobs with limited material. The movie itself is a by-the-numbers Odd Couple/Road Trip/Buddy Comedy with few surprises. But the clamor AROUND the movie is far more interesting and touches upon timely and topical themes like "who gets to tell what stories?" and "should you be faithful to a person's life and truth when making a movie at least in part about that person" and "Should we call this 'Green Book' even when it's about a white guy?". We also delve into the REAL Donald Shirley, play some of his music and listen to him talk about racism in America. ALSO HEADLINES (with our snappy theme-song): 'Green Book' Director Peter Farrelly and something else he pulled out of his lower region. Nick Vallelonga regrets his regrettable tweets. Jason suffers a real-time podcasting injury while making a joke about another man's physical challenges. Robot-on-robot crime and RANTS N RAVE, or at least Chris on the Go-Go's musical and a whole revealing section about Matt The Engineer.
