The music rooted in the traditions of the peoples, of the people, belongs to everyone, to anyone, because it arises from human experiences and emotions, which are universal, expressed through an infinite wealth of nuances and languages. That’s why we can enjoy and be moved by the genuine music from the most diverse origins and cultures, which we always strive to highlight in Mundofonías. On this occasion, new albums take us through Hungarian, Belgian, Danish, Tatar, Finnish, Norwegian, Maltese, West African with Australian connection, East African with London connection, and Cuban tunes. - Tatros Együttes - Gajcsánai kezesek - Pillanat - The Ghent Folk Violin Project - Hypomnesia - Ogopogo - Dreamers Circus - Tretur - Handed on - Lӓysӓn Ensemble of Yafarovo Village - Estiplarda eget pechen chaba - Let's get together tonight: Mishar Tatar songs from Orenburg region - Anne-Mari Kivimäki - Halo - Kotiin - Egil Kalman / Hans Hulbækmo - Arythmetics - Unit of time - Benji Cachia - 10 beats later - Akshara - Mandeng Groove - Mamadou [+ Ba Cissoko] - Conakry - Fiston Lusambo - Beyo beyo - Kabila moja - Estrellas de Buena Vista - Son para mi abuelo - Live in Havana 📸 Tatros Efyüttes (Czentye Richárd)

We travel decades back in spacetime in search of gems from the past that bring us echoes of Sephardic sounds in New York, Macedonian traditions, and the Roma of Slovakia. We return to the present to listen to other popular music, from strictly traditional recordings to new reinterpretations, taking us on a journey through Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Serbia, or the Urals, also hearing music from the Vlachs, Boykos, or Bashkirs. We finish in the Indian subcontinent, with echoes of Lahore and Jaipur. - Victoria Hazan - Mis penserios me trusheron, gazel - All my hopes, all in vain: Early 1940s Judeo-Spanish songs in New York - [Artistas populares / Folk artists] - Macedonsko narodno oro - Crowing at night: Macedonian traditional dances & songs from Radio Skopje ca. 1949-50 [V.A.] - [Artistas populares / Folk artists] - Csapás variations - Romane gil'a: 1958-71 field recordings of Roma songs from Slovakia, eastern Czechia & northern Hungary [V.A.] - Palac - Vjarba - Folk and great tunes from Belarus [V.A.] - [Artistas populares / Folk artists] - Kolomyikas 1 - A ya sobi zaspivayu: Boyko music from Ukrainian Carpathians - Lorenc, Stępień, Gancarczyk, Skowrońska, Urban-Burdalska - A dzień dobry - Śpiewnik weselny: reinterpretacja - Maria Siwiec - Kary kóń, kary [+ Kapela Niwińskich] - Wesele - Lăutarii din Alova - De dor și de joc - Made in Halovo: Music of Vlachs / Romanians from Timok Valley (Serbia) - Veliki Izvor Village Ensemble - Cenele Bajova - Šanko si bonka zalibi: Serbian music from Timok Valley - Khalil Almukhametov, Minura Yalchibaeva – Kul buyina kilhan ine – Ural: Bashkir music from Orenburg region [V.A.] - Muslim Shaggan - Ni Saiyon Asi - Asar - Jaipur Junction - Mann mera - Sambhav 📸 Muslim Shaggan

The event is free but an RSVP is recommended. April is Asian, Pacific Islander & Desi Heritage Month which CSULB celebrates by hosting events to spread community awareness. Today, April 15, is a Snack & Craft event in the CPaCE Courtyard from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This week is Transgender Week of Joy at the Beach, which will be celebrated with a haircutting event called Haircuts and Buttons. Hosted this Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the FO3 Courtyard, attendees can receive gender-affirming haircuts while enjoying music and making buttons. There are limited spots for this event and attendees are required to RSVP on the Events & Orgs app. Samuel Chacko, Managing Editor of the Daily Forty-Niner, joined Beach Weekly for this episode to discuss the multi-million dollar federal grant received by the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center. From our location on campus, only 49% of the sun's area was covered by the moon during this eclipse. A new FAFSA form was released this year in an effort to simplify the process and make it easier for students to fill out, but technical difficulties and hours-long waits for assistance have slowed down the procedure. California Assembly Bill 1887 has extended the FAFSA deadline from April 2 to May 2 after students and families have been experiencing extreme difficulties with the online form. On March 28, Beach Building Services broke ground on the new affordable dorm building called La Playa Hall near the existing Hillside dorms. The building will be 4,200 square feet, with 424 beds. The project will cost $115 million with $53 million being covered by the “Higher Education Student Housing Grant Program." Construction will begin in June and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026. Arizona's Supreme Court has decided to uphold an abortion law from the 1860s that will outlaw most abortions in the state except in cases where the pregnant person's life is at risk. Half a million Arizona residents have already signed a petition that would put an abortion rights measure on this year's ballot. If passed, this measure would enshrine abortion rights as a permanent fixture within the state's constitution. A quick rise in temperature across Orenburg, Russia has caused snow and ice to melt substantially. Water pressure from this melt has caused a dam in the Ural River to burst which led to flooding across the region. According to Russia's RIA state news agency, 120,000 residents of the city and surrounding areas have had to evacuate as over 1,000 homes have been flooded. A new investigation from journalists at iStories and researchers at the Conflict Intelligence Team accuses the Russian military of using so-called “torture pits” against unruly, often drunk soldiers. Journalists and researchers think they found two sites, one outside Volgograd and the other outside Orenburg. iStories collected testimony from soldiers at two training grounds in these areas and identified satellite images that appear to show the pits those soldiers described. iStories spoke to a soldier who trained at this facility this summer (the journalists gave him the pseudonym “Viktor”), who described a chaotic breakdown in military discipline. According to Viktor, roughly 80 percent of the soldiers undergoing training were prisoner recruits who were often drunk or high. In his comments to journalists, Viktor said repeatedly that these soldiers were only there for the money, signaling potentially severe problems with morale in Russia's armed forces. The Naked Pravda spoke to the author of the iStories report, Sonya Savina, to learn more about the story. This week our guest on the podcast is Sergei Babinets. Sergei Babinets is a lawyer and head of the Orenburg branch of the Committee against Torture, whose head office is in Nizhny Novgorod. The issues discussed in the podcast include: How did someone who had intended to work in the prosecutor's office went to work for a human rights organisation? How does the work of the Committee Against Torture vary in terms of city and region (Moscow, Grozny, Orenburg)? How did you become a journalist (with Ekho Moskvy in Orenburg)? What are the risks that face a human rights defender in Russia today? Is the work of a human rights defender at the Committee Against Torture equally risky across the country? What do you think of the recent revelations of torture in Saratov region penal colonies? To what extent is the state a positive and reliable partner in the work against torture? What is the future of the human rights movement in Russia in the light of what is happening in the country now? This podcast is in Russian. You can also listen to the podcast on our website or on SoundCloud, Podcasts.com, Spotify, iTunes and Anchor. The music, from Stravinsky's Elegy for Solo Viola, is performed for us by Karolina Herrera. Sergei Nikitin writes on Facebook: He dreamed since childhood of protecting people from criminals, following in the footsteps of his soldier-grandfather and his father, who worked in the police force for 25 years. After receiving a law degree, he decided to work in the prosecutor's office, which oversees all law enforcement bodies. Four years as an assistant prosecutor and attempts to join the prosecutor's office as a full-time employee led him to realise that the prosecutor's office didn't really seem to want him. The search for a job where Sergei Babinets could realize his dream led him to the Committee against Torture. Many years ago, I met Sergei in Moscow. He had just started working in the Moscow office of the famous Committee against Torture and he called on us at Amnesty International. Since then, I have kept in touch with Sergei, who after Moscow worked in many cities: Nizhny Novgorod, Grozny and Orenburg. The possibilities to combat torture and protect victims of torture varies from region to region. While in the North Caucasus the office where Sergei worked was set on fire, if in Nizhny Novgorod the group's exhibition was banned, if in Moscow ‘Basmanny Justice' simply does not want to pay any attention to human rights activists, in Orenburg the Committee Against Torture can hold events on any topic - here there is no interest in opposing human rights defenders. Sergei Babinets successfully combines his human rights activities with his work at Ekho Moskvy radio in Orenburg: he is good at this work too, and therefore it's very interesting to listen to him in our latest podcast.

Human Rights in Russia week-ending 10 September 2021 - with Viktor Davydov

This week our guest on the podcast is the journalist and human rights activist Viktor Davydov. Victor Davydov studied at Kuibyshev Technical University and then at the History Department of Kuibyshev University. In 1974, he began publishing and distributing samizdat, for which he was interrogated by the KGB in September 1975. In 1975 he became a member of the dissident groups in Kuibyshev, and on 1 April 1976 was among the organizers of a protest march, for which he was jailed for 10 days and expelled from the university. In 1976-1979 he studied at the Orenburg department of the All-Union Correspondence Law Institute. He was forcibly hospitalized in Kuibyshev Medical Institute clinic in the spring of 1979. He worked on the Chronicle of Current Events and authored two samizdat works, for which he was arrested on 28 November 1979 under Article 190-1 of the RSFSR Criminal Code. He was declared insane by experts from the Serbsky Institute, with a diagnosis of "flaccid schizophrenia". On 19 September 1980, by decision of the Kuibyshev Regional Court, he was sent for compulsory treatment to Kazan Special Psychiatric Hospital of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, from where he was transferred to the Blagoveshchensky Hospital in Amur Region. In the hospital he was 'treated' with strong doses of neuroleptic drugs. He was released in July 1983. After release, he took part in the work of the Russian Social Fund for Persecuted Persons and Their Families (the Solzhenitsyn Fund). On 28 October 1984 he emigrated from the Soviet Union. Thereafter he worked for Radio Liberty and Voice of America and published in Russkaya mysl' and Novoe Russkoe Slovo. In 1986-1988 he worked at the Centre for Democracy in the USSR headed by Vladimir Bukovsky and Yury Yarym-Agaev. In 1988-1991 he worked as a programmer in American companies. In October 1991 he returned to the USSR. In 1991-1993 he was a member of the political council of the Free Democratic Party of Russia, headed by Marina Salie. In 1993 he founded the Globus Press Syndicate, an independent news agency which operated until 2005. At present, he is the editor-in-chief of the online publication New Chronicle of Current Events. Since 2015, he has lived in Tbilisi. [Source: www.colta.ru/articles/dissident...ntsimskim-vokzalom]Questions discussed on the podcast: 1) When you were young, in Soviet times, you were a dissident. Why did you become a dissident? 2) You became a victim of punitive psychiatry. Why did the Soviet regime use this method of dealing with dissidents? 3) The use of psychiatry in post-Soviet Russia. 4) After your return to Russia in 1991, you participated in the democratic movement and then founded a news agency. How do you view the contrast between the 1990s and post-2000s in terms of opportunities for independent political activity and freedom of speech? 5) You left Russia in 2015. Does this mean you are pessimistic about the future of human rights in the country? This podcast is in Russian. You can also listen to the podcast on our website or on SoundCloud, Spotify and iTunes. The music, from Stravinsky's Elegy for Solo Viola, is performed for us by Karolina Herrera.Sergei Nikitin writes on Facebook: Viktor Davydov's biography could form the basis of an adventure novel. A student at Kuibyshev Polytechnic Institute who tape-recorded Deutsche Welle broadcasts of a reading of the Gulag Archipelago, and then retyped the text on paper with a typewriter; a student expelled from university for participating in a "Happening"; arrested under Article 190-1 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR for publishing samizdat; diagnosed as having "sluggish schizophrenia" by the notorious Serbsky Institute and sent to a Special Psychiatric Hospital. After an August break we have resumed our meetings with Russian human rights activists and our conversation with Viktor Davydov was fascinating. In September 2021, Viktor Davydov's book "The Ninth Circle" is to be published by the NLO Publishing House, in which he describes in great detail his "odyssey in the psychiatric Gulag". Simon Cosgrove and I listened as if spellbound to Viktor's interesting story, shaken by his fate. And we rejoiced that this brave man was not broken, that he got free, that he is writing, and that we could talk to him. I highly recommend listening to our conversation. Simon Cosgrove adds: A summary of some of the week's events in Russia relevant to human rights can be found on our website here.
