When I discovered that Weird Al was actually on the bill at the most eclectic festival lineup I'd ever seen ("I can see Agnostic Front and Weird Al on the same day?!?" was my initial response) I had to drop "Start a Pac-Man-related cult" from my bucket list to make room for "participate in a Weird Al pit."* This has been one of many situational exceptions I've had to make to my well-documented "Too Old For The Pit" rule. I made perhaps too many exceptions during the weekend of Riot Fest, as my ribs remain bruised (presumably from Sunday's Screeching Weasel prancings,) but I appear to have survived. Highlights that I was unable to fit into the song: 1. A dude dressed as a banana in said pit 2. A dude dressed as Jesus in said pit (I told him "Hey! I read your book!") 3. Moshing to "Ricky." Seriously. "Ricky." 4. Watching Steve Jay and Jim West occasionally take photos of said pit 5. Watching a dude on the edge of said pit explain to his teenaged daughter the cardinal rule of "someone goes down, you help them up." Felt that in my soul. Special thanks to Al, whose birthday is next week. And also to my wife, for encouraging me to go to this thing. And to MC Lars for absolving me of the inadvertent theft of his "damn, son" bit. And to Dr. Demento for the years upon years of support...it just hit me that this is the first song I've ever released that has NO chance whatsoever of being played on the Dr. Demento show. But damned if he didn't end the show strong as hell, and on his own terms. (Barry, if you're reading this, all the best in your retirement.) * Apologies to anyone who has already converted their worldly posessions to tokens in anticipation of said cult. No refunds. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris tackle the letter Z for this month's entry in the Alphabet Soup-er Series. It was Dan's pick, and he went with the classic text adventure Zork. Does this legendary title stand the test of time? The guys have some differing opinions. Then, in Week Old News, Electronic Arts goes even further to the dark side, AI is freaking everywhere, Rock Band 4 is finally shutting down, and apparently people still care about what Michael Pachter has to say? Finally in the checkpoint, Dan and Kris had very little time to actually play video games, but Kris decided to make cake pops for his daughter's birthday! How did they come out? New York City is less than a month away from possibly electing a communist who has said he wants a global intifada. The Pac-Man, Ted Flint, has the latest on that story and how the media continues to portray Israel as the aggressors in its war against Hamas and the Palestinians.
Welcome to our all-new collaborative series, "Hidden Levels," in which we team up with 99% Invisible to explore how the world of video games has impacted the world beyond. We'll dive deep into how games are made and designed, exploring everything from the history of the joystick to the faithful recreation of nature in digital spaces. Whether you are a lifelong gamer or have never picked up a controller, "Hidden Levels" uncovers how games have quietly changed culture, technology, and the way we see the world...starting with a '90s arcade classic. Developer Mark Turmell worked at Midway, which was known for iconic games like Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Mortal Kombat. His creation of NBA Jam in 1993 pushed the company in a new direction. It debuted at the height of the Chicago Bulls' dynasty, aiming to capture the energy of professional basketball in a high-octane, over-the-top format. The game was a hit out of the gate, captivating players with its digitized graphics (with the heads of real NBA players) and fantasy gameplay where players could become "on fire." At the heart of the NBA Jam gaming experience was the voice of its announcer, Tim Kitzrow. Turmell and the game's sound team had realized they needed a voice that could match the game's energy and cut through the din of an arcade, without the budget for a professional NBA commentator. So they turned to Kitzrow, an improv comedian and journeyman actor, who was initially hired by Midway for pinball voiceovers — it was just a fun side gig. He had no idea that his work on NBA Jam would make such a lasting impact on the industry. Kitzrow modeled his energetic, flamboyant delivery on NBA announcer Marv Albert, infusing it with his own ad-libbed, short, and punchy catchphrases like "REJECTED!" and the game's most famous line, "Boomshakalaka!"—which was suggested by an artist and inspired by funk group Sly and the Family Stone. The game became a monumental hit, reportedly making $1 billion in quarters in its first year, with its catchphrases entering basketball vernacular. *** Credits: This episode of "Hidden Levels" was produced by James Parkinson, edited by Emmett FitzGerald, and mixed by Martín Gonzalez. Original music by Swan Real, Jamilah Sandoto, and Paul Vaitkus. Series theme by Swan Real and Paul Vaitkus. This story was adapted from James Parkinson's podcast, Gameplay. The Managing Producer for "Hidden Levels" is Chris Berube. The series was created by Ben Brock Johnson. "Hidden Levels" is a production of 99% Invisible and WBUR's Endless Thread.

Vote Box of Oddities For People's Choice Award Here! Live Show Info And Tickets Here! What do ancient Egyptians, Romanian grandmas, and angry Pac-Man ghosts have in common? They all want a bite to eat—from beyond the grave. This episode of The Box of Oddities serves up a global smorgasbord of traditions where feeding the dead isn't just a metaphor—it's a full-course afterlife buffet. From wine funnels into Roman tombs to a perfectly seasoned rotisserie chicken in New Orleans, we explore the bizarre and touching ways humanity has kept its ghostly loved ones well-fed. Then things get... heated. We dive deep into the strange world of arousal non-concordance—when your body throws a party your brain didn't RSVP to. You'll meet people who climax during ab workouts, from brushing their teeth, or from reading a particularly spicy footnote. It's not consent. It's just neurology being weird again. Two tales. One episode. Ancient snacks, ghost etiquette, and involuntary fireworks. You'll laugh, cringe, and maybe never look at funeral biscuits or fitness routines the same way again.
Hello, friends! Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast. After a short break (you'll find out why in this episode), the store has reopened just in time for Halloween! On this episode of the podcast I'm recommending four films in which characters accidentally open portals, unleash evil spirits into this world, and spend the majority of the film trying to send it back before… gulp… you know.Evil Dead 2 (1987)Ash Williams is one unlucky fellow as, once again, he finds himself in a remote cabin accidentally opening a portal to Hell after playing recorded passages read from the Necronomicon — aka “the Book of the Dead.” You don't need to have seen the first film to watch this one. Grab a bucket of popcorn and your chainsaw and check this one out.The Gate (1987)Glen, his best friend Terry, and Glen's older sister Al accidentally open a gate to Hell in their own backyard and must use what resources they have to put them back. For being PG13, The Gate has some pretty horrifying (and amazing) special effects. This is the film that turned me on to The Killer Dwarves and made me fear geodes. Night of the Demons (1988)A group of teens are invited to attend a Halloween party at an abandoned funeral parlor (rumored to be haunted) and perform a seance. What could possibly go wrong? If you said “nothing” you haven't been paying attention! One by one most of the teens become possessed, killed, or killed and then possessed. These demons like to mix things up! A great horror flick with a great 80s vibe. Witchboard (1986)If you've learned anything from this podcast so far I hope it's to not go around trying to open portals to other worlds. In Witchboard, Linda begins dabbling with an Ouija Board and if you think that leads to good things, you have learned nothing. It's up to Linda's current boyfriend and ex-boyfriend to team up and drive the evil out of her. I won't tell you if they are successful but I will tell you this film has at least two sequels. Thanks for stopping by our video store. Enjoy the new hot dog roller and cocktail Ms. Pac-Man machine we added by the front door. Grab a few horror films while you're here and don't forget to rewind them before you return them. Thanks for coming in! This is a public episode. “Nobody was the right person for the job … it just had to be me right now.” That's how Jelani Stowers breaks down the whirlwind journey of taking ownership of Pages Bookshop in Rosedale Park, a cultural anchor in Detroit. In this conversation with Khary Frazier, Jelani traces his family's roots—grandparents who migrated from Alabama and Virginia to Detroit for Wayne State, a father balancing electrician work with film, and a mother who shaped young lives as a preschool teacher. He talks about growing up in Rosedale Park, remembering the neighborhood-wide yard sales that felt like “Halloween with treasures,” and how early lessons at the African-centered Nsoma Institute taught him to respect Africa, compost waste, and even see Pac-Man through a philosophical lens. From coding internships to studying philosophy at Wayne State, Jelani connects gentrification, democracy, and Detroit's cultural resilience into a philosophy of action. The heart of this episode? How saving a bookstore became about more than books—it's about legacy, community continuity, and ensuring that Black Detroiters still have space to gather, learn, and dream in their own neighborhoods. If you care about Detroit's past struggles and its future possibilities, this is a conversation you need to sit with. Former FBI Director James Comey indicted today for his role in the phony Russia collusion hoax. Hopefully, he's the first of many Deep Staters to face justice for their part in trying to bring down Donald Trump. The PAC-Man, Ted Flint, has that story along with the Left's reaction to the Charlie Kirk assassination; and the Secret Service may investigate a tweet from California Governor Gavin Newsome's office, after a federal prosecutor deemed the post offensive and requested a threat assessment.
In 1980, the world of arcade games got a jolt that changed the gaming world forever. That's when a round yellow fellow with a large set of chompers known as Pac-Man first came on the scene. It's now been 45 years since the game was first imported to the US from Japan as PuckMan, a name that was quickly changed. It's interesting to note that, in the original game, the few players who completed all levels simply landed on a garbled “kill screen.” How is it that a game with no defined way to even “win” managed to take hold and never let go? Chris Morris, an independent journalist and editor who specializes in the video game and consumer electronics industries, joins USA TODAY's The Excerpt to discuss the outsized cultural impact of Pac-Man.Have feedback on the show? LOVE/SEX ADDICTION TO INTROSPECTION TO BECOMING A WORLD-CLASS WRITER: SUE WILLIAM SILVERMAN Let's all welcome Sue William Silverman. Sue is an award-winning memoirist, essayist, poet, and teacher whose work has continually challenged complacency and redefined what it means to write and live with courage. Her newest book, "Selected Misdemeanours: Essays at the Mercy of the Reader", is a collection of unapologetic word grenades, miniature stories that take fleeting, everyday moments and show how they ripple outward into emotional earthquakes. Whether recalling a fraught family vacation, an evening with Chippendale dancers, or a Pac-Man-and-bourbon-fueled meditation on love gone wrong, Sue reveals how the seemingly small decisions of our lives can profoundly shape our identities. Sue is a recovering sex/love addict, and she has worked arduously to build a life for herself and done an excellent job. She is the author of several groundbreaking books, including Because I Remember Terror, Father, I Remember You; Love Sick: One Woman's Journey Through Sexual Addiction, later adapted into a Lifetime movie; The Pat Boone Fan Club: My Life as a White Anglo-Saxon Jew; and How to Survive Death and Other Inconveniences. She's also a beloved teacher of the craft, with guides like Fearless Confessions and Acetylene Torch Songs inspiring a new generation of memoirists. Her work has been featured on The View, Anderson Cooper 360, and PBS Books, and today she joins me to talk about the power and peril of the smallest choices we make, the messy search for love and belonging, and why writing into our vulnerabilities can ultimately transform us. What You'll Discover in This Episode: How Sue's personal struggles with sex/love addiction inspired her healing and creative introspection The process of transforming intimate, painful experiences into celebrated literature Her impact as a teacher and mentor to writers seeking authenticity and vulnerability Insights on writing memoir, living with courage, and turning adversity into art The profound ripple effect of small moments and everyday decisions on identity About: Sue William Silverman: A renowned author for memoirs that confront trauma and spark reflection, including Because I Remember Terror, Father, I Remember You; Love Sick: One Woman's Journey Through Sexual Addiction, later adapted for Lifetime; The Pat Boone Fan Club: My Life as a White Anglo-Saxon Jew; and How to Survive Death and Other Inconveniences. Icons represent ideas that are bigger than themselves.Myths are stories that represent ideas that are bigger than themselves.Archetypes are symbols of recognizable patterns of behavior.Letters of the alphabet are symbols (graphemes) that represents sounds (phonemes,) just as notes on a sheet of music are symbols that represent sounds.A role model is a personal icon, an archetype that you have chosen to emulate. The human brain loves symbols and patterns. This is why we embrace icons, myths, and archetypes. When we recognize a pattern that has been stored in our subconscious, we call it intuition. When we hear a pattern that has been repeated too many times, we call it a predictable cliché.Icons, myths, and archetypes evolve with each new generation.I was born in the 12th year of the 18-year Baby Boom generation that began exactly 9 months and 10 minutes after the end of World War II.Marilyn Monroe was the iconic sex symbol. The Statue of Liberty, Yankee Stadium, Yellowstone, and Woodstock were America's iconic places. Rolls Royce, Cadillac, Corvette, Camaro and Mustang were iconic cars. Tetris, Pong, and Pac-Man were iconic video games. The mythic stories of Baby Boomers were mostly about combat. Sometimes we fought the Indians of the Old West. Sometimes we fought the Germans, or the Japanese. We fought the Establishment. We fought for justice. Or we fought just to stay alive. And we always won.Our definitive male archetype in these mythic stories was rugged, brave, independent, and honorable. John Wayne, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery.Baby Boomer female archetypes were smart, pretty, and strong; Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews, Sophia Loren.Lots of movies ended with a wedding. These societal forces shaped the birth cohort known as the Baby Boomers.Gen-X was shaped by an entirely different set of icons, myths, and archetypes.Millennials had icons, myths, and archetypes that were all their own, as well. The Gen-Z cohort believes it is their responsibility to straighten out everything that the Boomers and X-ers screwed up.Gen-Alpha is determined to make their own decisions and decide for themselves what they want to do. They will be the vanguard of the next “Me” generation.Fortunately, there are elemental beliefs that bind us all together. It is upon those beliefs that successful customer-bonding ad campaigns are built. Openly name these beliefs and they lose their magic. If you claim to possess them, no one will believe you.EXAMPLES: Never claim to be honest. Just say something that only an honest person would say. Never claim to be a perfectionist. Just do something that only a perfectionist would do. Don't tell people that you are an author or a podcaster. Just give them a copy of your book. Invite them to be on your podcast. If you would win the hearts and minds of tomorrow's customers, this is what you must do:Imagine that you are standing face-to-face with three perfect customers and they are each looking into your eyes. The first one says, “Talk is cheap. Don't tell me what you believe. Show me.”The second customer says, “Tell me a true story that lets me know who you really are, including the price that you pay for being you.”Customer three says, “If you betray me after I have given you my trust, I will burn you down so hot that grass won't grow for 100 years.”Now you understand cancel culture. Frustration created it, and social media fuels it.People are looking for someone who really is...

Namco set out to create a super popular rhythm game and accidentally created the most popular mascots since Pac-Man. Don-chan and Katsu-chan are unavoidable as we talk about the extremely popular in the East but largely ignored in the West drum game, Taiko No Tatsujin! Why was this game never released in the U.S. until now? How did an instrument mishap lead to the most embarrassing moment of young Rob's life? Is every arcade game released after the year 2000 just a Playstation in disguise? How did Donkey Kong steal this game's popularity? We answer your questions like what arcade game did we initial hate but grew to love over time (#RedemptionArc), what our favorite non-video game arcade attraction (excluding pinball), and what IP we predict will be the next new beat ‘em up announced. Hi everyone! In today's episode we discuss Avengers: Doomsday theories about the return of a hero that we all miss and how their role may be very important to the story of the next two Avengers films! We have a new Brain Candy seal of approval, inspired by Sarah, created by Adam, and loved by all. Pay attention to our approvals with our new device. We wonder why the Twinkie never left despite threats that they were discontinuing their production of the food (???). We learn the origin of Pac-Man, why the game was revolutionary, and what makes us love it still. We talk about the strange success of the sporting goods story, Dicks, and how Sarah thought Dick divorced someone and she had a spinoff store called Chicks. We debate AI for therapy, wellness, and friendship, and share what we think people should do instead (and it involves, you know, talking to actual people). We learn about the new Shiny Happy People season, but it turns out, Susie's up to speed, since she was a participant in evangelical churches in the 90s.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:For 50% off your order, head to https://www.dailylook.com and use code BRAINCANDYSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
