In the United States, it's difficult to imagine how civil violence could break out in the United States - how civic and political breakdown could actually manifest in our neighborhoods. The Troubles - the conflict that tore Northern Ireland apart for decades - offer a stark warning for America's increasingly polarized society. In this episode, Oisin Feeney, creator of the acclaimed "The Troubles" podcast, walks us through how a society descended from peaceful civil rights protests into thirty years of paramilitary violence, bombings, and assassinations. This conversation helps explain how ordinary communities became battlegrounds. Feeney explains how Catholic nationalists and Protestant unionists retreated to extremes when moderate voices could no longer be heard, and how paramilitaries filled the vacuum when people lost faith in government institutions. The parallels to America's current situation are impossible to ignore. From the rise of paramilitary-adjacent groups to increasing political violence, from deep economic inequality to the drowning out of moderate voices, the warning signs are flashing. Feeney discusses how violence becomes normalized, how communities cope with prolonged conflict, and what the difficult peace process in Northern Ireland can teach us about both the fragility and resilience of democratic societies. The lesson? Societies can fracture quickly, but rebuilding takes generations. For Americans concerned about our democratic future, this conversation offers critical perspective on what's at stake and what we must protect before it's too late.-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Lee Hepner, senior legal counsel for the American Economic Liberties Project, to discuss the recent overturning of net neutrality. Then they speak with Joshua Kaplan, reporter at ProPublica, to discuss his recent piece entitled "The Militia and the Mole." First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the DoJ's release of details related to Trump's Jan 6th- and Stolen Documents-related cases, mass evacuations amid wildfires in LA, Dem's retaining of the Virginia legislature, the North Carolina Supreme Court's anti-democratic move, the House's massive anti-immigration bill, DoJ action over the RealPage rent-fixing scheme and the prior weaponization of the department under Trump, Israel's ongoing slaughter of Gazans in supposed safe zones, and ACA expansion, before unpacking a recent report on the unsurprising misinformation around gender-affirming care for adolescents. Lee Hepner then joins, jumping right into an extensive history of Net Neutrality, stemming from the establishment of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under FDR's New Deal to preserve open networks and fair communication, with the 1996 Communications Act expanding its coverage to the internet and contributing to the arguments to expand to full Net Neutrality building under Bush before coming to fruition under Obama, only to be killed and restored by Trump and Biden respectively, all leading to the recent 6th Circuit decision to, once again, kill it. After tackling what Net Neutrality exactly is (the mandate for providers to serve websites equally) and expanding on the particular role the overturning of the Chevron Deference Doctrine played in this decision, Hepner wraps up with tactics to push back against this decision, and whether federalism will help keep these corporations in line. Joshua Kaplan then walks Sam and Emma through his extensive reporting on the far-right militia American Patriots 3% (AP3), tackling their role within the wider extremist militia ecosystem and how they used that to distance the organization from the January 6th insurrection attempt before having a wider discussion on the initial backlash (even internally) to these organizations in the wake of 1/6 before a steady rhetorical pivot from Trump and the GOP reversed the tides completely, and why that should concern us heading into a second Trump Administration with threats of mass pardoning for violent participators and organizers of 1/6. After expanding on AP3's odd “big tent” identity amid right-wing militias, Kaplan touches on his extensive conversations with a mole from AP3 and the role Facebook played in the militia's outreach, before wrapping up with the genuine threat posed by the extensive military training of these groups, both offered by the groups themselves and aided by their extensive connections to police, military, and veteran organizations. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack the response from Mexico's President Scheinbaum to Trump's absurd statements on the US' territorial rights, the passage of the GOP's Lincoln Riley Bill with support from myriad Congressional Dems – including John “Manchin 2.0” Fetterman – to hand over immigration enforcement to the states (alongside the right to deport without criminal conviction). Chris Hayes reflects on the short history of Facebook's moderation team, John from Montreal on Trump's antagonization of US allies, and Kowalski from Nebraska parses through the future of farming amid threats to land ownership and more. *) Israel kills 66 Palestinians, wounds 100 in new Gaza massacre Israel unleashed another deadly attack in northern Gaza, killing at least 66 Palestinians and injuring 100 more in a devastating air strike near Kamal Adwan Hospital, witnesses and local journalists report. Palestinian journalist Hossam Shabat described the scene as “horrific”, revealing that the bombing targeted displaced people and “wiped out entire families”. Hussam Abu Safiya, the hospital's director, painted an even grimmer picture, saying that “there were about 200 people at the site when it was bombed. Many are dead, others are injured, and so many are still buried under the rubble”. *) Senate scuttles Sanders' shot at stopping sale of US arms to Israel The US Senate has rejected Senator Bernie Sanders' attempt to halt arms sales to Israel, even as concerns grow over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Out of 100 senators, a striking majority — 79 — voted against blocking sales of tank rounds to Israel, while 18 supported the measure. Similar resistance met Sanders' second proposal to stop mortar shipments, with 78 senators voting “no”. The votes broke largely along party lines, with all “yes” votes coming from Sanders' Democratic caucus allies. A third proposal, targeting the sale of bomb-guidance systems, was also on the table but faced dim prospects. *) Ukraine said to have fired UK Storm Shadow missiles into Russia For the first time, Ukraine has used British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles against Russia, British media reports, with London reportedly giving the green light. Several of the long-range missiles were fired at a Russian military target, according to the Financial Times, which cited a Western official. The Times confirmed the move, noting it's the first deployment of these missiles since Britain handed them over. *) Paramilitary rampage in central Sudan kills at least 40 people — medic Violence erupted in central Sudan as paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched an assault on a village north of Wad Madani, leaving at least 40 people dead, according to a medic from Wad Rawah Hospital. “All the victims suffered direct gunshot wounds,” said the medic, who spoke anonymously due to repeated attacks on healthcare workers. Eyewitnesses said the attack began Tuesday night, with the paramilitary RSF launching a deadly assault on the village. This bloodshed comes amid months of clashes between the RSF and Sudan's military, pushing Al-Jazira state deeper into chaos and turning once-safe areas into battlegrounds. And finally… *) US charges Indian tycoon Gautam Adani with duping investors, bribery plot Gautam Adani, the billionaire behind India's Adani Group, is now facing US federal charges for an alleged bribery scheme involving hundreds of millions of dollars. Prosecutors in Brooklyn claim that between 2020 and 2024, Adani, along with two associates, paid $250 million in bribes to Indian officials to secure lucrative solar energy contracts projected to yield $2 billion in profits. The accused executives allegedly covered their tracks with false and misleading financial statements, raising over $3 billion in loans and bonds.

In this gripping season of the Anti-Trans Hate Machine, host Imara Jones examines the disturbing links between the rise of political violence in America, far-right paramilitary groups, and anti-trans hate. Join us as we show how far-right militias, by redirecting their focus after the January 6 insurrection to attacking drag shows and LGBTQ events, are seeking to destabilize communities from the ground up. Episode 107 of the Irregular Warfare Podcast examines how China uses its paramilitary and internal security forces to project power abroad and build global influence. Our guests begin by dissecting the Chinese security apparatus: contrasting the People's Liberation Army with the CCP's internal police forces and paramilitaries. They then explore how China uses these nontraditional security forces—which often aid foreign governments in maintaining regime stability—as an alternative to U.S. security assistance packages. Finally, our guests conclude by examining how the U.S. and its allies can compete with China more effectively in the realm of security cooperation.

And the Reagan government's hubris, and drive to fuel its war on Nicaragua, would break U.S. laws and lead to a shocking scandal in Washington: Iran Contra. In this episode, host Michael Fox walks back into the 1980s, to the U.S. response to revolution in Nicaragua and to the international solidarity that pushed back. This is Part 2 of Episode 10.Under the Shadow is an investigative narrative podcast series that walks back in time, telling the story of the past by visiting momentous places in the present. In each episode, host Michael Fox takes us to a location where something historic happened — a landmark of revolutionary struggle or foreign intervention. Today, it might look like a random street corner, a church, a mall, a monument, or a museum. But every place he takes us was once the site of history-making events that shook countries, impacted lives, and left deep marks on the world.Hosted by Latin America-based journalist Michael Fox.This podcast is produced in partnership between The Real News Network and NACLA.Guests:Alex AviñaWilliam RobinsonAlex CoxMarvin Ortega RodriguezEline Van OmmenPeter KornbluhColeen LittlejohnGrahame RussellJose Francisco ArtolaEdited by Heather Gies.Sound design by Gustavo Türck.Theme music by Monte Perdido and Michael Fox.Permanent linksFollow and support journalist Michael Fox or Under the Shadow at https://www.patreon.com/mfox. Simón talks a little about his early days in media near the start of the Indymedia world, his documentary that became the news website El Enemigo Común (which translates to “the common enemy”) which covered grassroots, indigenous led movements in southern so-called Mexico, and about his book with a focus on intervention and integration from capitalist and military powers in the US, multinational banking and big pharma and the violence against and resilience of indigenous communities under that nation-state. The gun grabbers in Congress are at it again. Attempts to disarm the American people have only been moderately successful over the past few years. So a bill was recently introduced in the House of Representatives entitled “Preventing Private Paramilitary Activity Act of 2024”. This bill wants to make it a crime for private citizens to work together to defend their rights. If this bill were to become law some day, even training together could not only get you fined, but placed in jail, possibly for life. Have these members of Congress forgotten that our war of independence was started by an attempt by the British governor of Massachusetts' attempt to disarm the people? That the the battles of Lexington and Concord were fought by private citizens who formed a militia? Or could it be that they just don't care about our rights and the Constitution, and are just looking for another way to subjugate the American people?
Paramilitaries, crime, and tens of thousands of disappeared persons—the so-called war on drugs has perpetuated violence in Latin America, at times precisely in regions of economic growth. Legal and illegal economy are difficult to distinguish. A failure of state institutions to provide security for its citizens does not sufficiently explain this. Selective Security in the War on Drugs: The Coloniality of State Power in Colombia and Mexico (Rowman & Littlefield, 2023) (Rowman & Littlefield, 2023) analyzes authoritarian neoliberalism in the war on drugs in Colombia and Mexico. It interprets the “security projects” of the 2000s—when the security provided by the state became ever more selective—as embedded in processes of land appropriation, transformed property relations, and global capital accumulation. By zooming in on security practices in Colombia and Mexico in that decade and juxtaposing the two contexts, this book offers a detailed analysis of the role of the state in violence. To what extent and for whom do states produce order and disorder? Which social forces support and drive such state practices? Expanding the literature on authoritarian neoliberalism and the coloniality of state power—thus linking political economy to postcolonial approaches—the book builds a theoretical lens to study state security practices. Different social groups, enjoying differentiated access to the state, influenced the state discourse on crime to very different extents. Security practices—which oscillated between dispersed organization by a multiplicity of actors and institutionalization with the military—materialized as horrific insecurity for social groups thought of as disposable. In tendency, putting security centerstage disabled dissent. The “security projects” exacerbated contradictions driven by a particular economic model and simultaneously criminalized precisely those that this model had already radically disadvantaged. STARFIGHTER DAN - CLANDESTINE QUAPERATOR TERTIA OPTIO LATEBRA FACTUM SELECTION AND TRAINING Special Activities Center has several hundred officers, mostly former members from Tier 1 units like SEAL Team Six and Delta Force, as well as other U.S. Special Operations Forces personnel. The CIA has also recruited individuals from within the agency. The CIA's formal designations for these individuals are paramilitary operations officers and specialized skills officers. Paramilitary operations officers often attend the Clandestine Service Trainee (CST) program, which trains them as clandestine intelligence operatives at an internal paramilitary training course. The primary strengths of SAC paramilitary officers are operational agility, adaptability, and deniability. They often operate in small teams, typically made up of two to ten operatives (with some operations being carried out by a single officer), all usually with extensive military tactical experience and a set of specialized skills that does not exist in any other unit. As fully trained intelligence case officers, paramilitary operations officers possess all the clandestine skills to collect human intelligence – and most importantly – to recruit assets from among the indigenous troops receiving their training. These officers often operate in remote locations behind enemy lines to carry out direct action (including raids and sabotage), counter-intelligence, guerrilla/unconventional warfare, counter-terrorism, and hostage rescue missions, in addition to being able to conduct espionage via HUMINT assets. . . . Paramilitary operations officers require a bachelor's degree to be considered for employment. SAC officers are trained at Camp Peary, Virginia (also known as "The Farm"), "The Point" (Harvey Point), a facility outside of Hertford, North Carolina, and at privately owned training centers around the United States. In addition to the eighteen months of training in the Clandestine Service Trainee (CST) program required to become a clandestine intelligence officer, paramilitary operations officers are trained to a high level of proficiency in: Explosive devices and firearms (foreign and domestic) Hand-to-hand combat High-performance / tactical driving (on and off-road) Apprehension avoidance Improvised explosive devices Cyberwarfare Covert channels HAHO / HALO parachuting Combat and commercial SCUBA Closed circuit diving Proficiency in foreign languages Surreptitious entry operations Vehicle hot-wiring Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) Extreme survival and wilderness training Combat EMS medical training Tactical communications Tracking Source THIRD OPTION SELECTION & TRAINING: ACTION OUT OF HIDING PLACE OF CHRIST Psalms 139:6 2 Corinthians & Romans 11:33 2 Corinthians 12:1-10 Exposit the MYSTERY I didn't create U to be Q if U were Q then Q would be U and because U know U can't be Q then Q cant be U. I'm joined by Belgian researcher Nic (@irc_nic) to talk about the post-war far-right in Belgium: what it believed, what it did, how it ensured loyalty, who profited...and who didn't. Paramilitary groups, Gladio, cults, dirty cops, gangsters and crooked spooks. They formed subterranean networks of mind-warping size that covertly influenced the course of modern Belgian history and planned everything from coups to terror attacks. Some experts are concerned that a destabilizing military force like the RSF might overrun the whole country, with potentially huge effects on regional security.
