Donald Trump's all-caps executive order on policing — “STRENGTHENING AND UNLEASHING AMERICA'S LAW ENFORCEMENT TO PURSUE CRIMINALS AND PROTECT INNOCENT CITIZENS” – is less about policy and more about intent. And that intent is clear: To give Trump direct control over local law enforcement and further shield police from accountability. As journalist and author of “Rise of the Warrior Cop” Radley Balko puts it, “It's a statement of intent and whether or not Trump is able to do a lot of the more pernicious and unconstitutional things he wants to do.” The executive order calls for “military and national security assets” to assist in local policing, directs federal resources and protections for state and local law enforcement, and enhances police protections, among other proclamations. But it reflects a deeper ambition. “He wants more federal militarized law enforcement under his thumb instead of under the thumb of governors or mayors,” says Balko. “He wants to use them to help with immigration deportations. He wants help with cracking down on protest.” And the concern and fear, says Balko, is that Trump will also “use law enforcement to go after his critics and people he perceives to be his enemies.” This week on The Intercept Briefing, Balko joins senior reporter Akela Lacy and host Jessica Washington to break down the Trump administration's push to federalize local law enforcement and “unleash” police who already face minimal meaningful restraint.Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. On this week's episode, The Watch's Radley Balko details the landmark decision of a Chicago judge not to allow firearm forensic experts to testify in a criminal case. Balko said the court's decision comes after years of criticism aimed at the field of forensic pattern matching. He argues many of the techniques made famous on shows like CSI have little scientific basis. Many, he said, are based on little more than the best guesses of examiners who are mainly just eyeballing evidence. He explained the idea that matching a mass-produced bullet to the mass-produced gun it was fired from, to the exclusion of all other guns, may well be impossible. Or, at the very least, we don't have advanced enough techniques to pull it off with the level of certainty you'd want for evidence that could put somebody in jail for years or even decades. Indeed, Balko noted, most examiners cited as experts in court are unwilling to even submit to outside tests of their methods. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I talk about how far the injunctions against President Biden's pistol-brace ban extend. Jake also tells us about his latest rifle purchase, which is a bit of a throwback. And I give an update on how I'm liking the Phlster Enigma and appendix carry. Special Guest: Radley Balko.

This week's podcast guest is Julee Balko (The Things We Keep, GenZ Publishing, July 2021). The impetus for Julee's book was her own grief following the death of her mother and her frustration at not finding books which dealt in a realistic and honest way with this crucial life experience. We discuss what it was like publishing with a small press, the difference between an author and a writer, and how she doesn't set strict deadlines in her author life, but writes when the spirit moves her. Julee's also a huge Twitter fan, amassing over 10,000 followers in her first year of writing both funny and creative posts as @misplacedcomma2. Author and Washington Post Columnist Radley Balko joins the show this week to talk about how police militarization impacts gun rights. Balko has spent a career documenting questionable police tactics, and he provides some unique insight into the Amir Locke case. Minneapolis Police killed Locke during a no-knock raid in February because he reached for a gun during the confusion caused by his apartment door being kicked in without warning. Locke wasn't the subject of the warrant and had no record, but he ended up dead. Now, the police officer who shot him has been cleared of any wrongdoing. He is far from the only person who has had their life or freedom taken without recourse as the result of drawing a gun during a no-knock raid. Balko gives background on a vast collection of people who have found themselves in the same situation. We also discuss the delicate balance between respecting police, attempting to make their jobs safer, and upholding Americans' civil liberties. Balko explains his view on how gun-rights proponents should react when those priorities come into conflict. And he shares real-world examples of it happening, including the use of dubious ballistic matching evidence against criminal defendants. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I discuss California Senator Diane Feinstein's (D.) solution to last week's deadly shootout in Sacramento. And we have another member segment too! Special Guest: Radley Balko.

Just how strong are the forces arrayed against police reform — and how far are they willing to go? In April 2019, Keith Humphrey was appointed police chief in Little Rock, Arkansas, a Southern city with a fraught history of racial division. Among the growing number of Black police chiefs, Humphrey came in with a mandate from the new mayor to implement reforms and curtail abuses. Almost as quickly as he set about to do that work, the city's “old guard,” the police union, and even cops under Humphrey's own command struck back. The aim, to many observers, was simple: to oust Humphrey. This week on Intercepted: Radley Balko joins The Intercept's Ali Gharib to talk about Humphrey's ordeal. Then Balko speaks to Little Rock civil rights attorney Mike Laux and former LRPD Lieut. Dill, Brent, Jake, and Ryan have a guest in the studio! We're joined by NFL writer and podcaster Mike Balko, who's carved out quite a successful career covering the New Orleans Saints for several outlets, breaking big news about Saints personnel moves, and having a nuanced eye about the team. He contributes to nflanalysis.net, hosts his own podcast, and has been featured on ESPN, Rivals, and USA Today. Follow him on Twitter at @MichaelBalkoJr for his reporting on all things NFL!Mike gives us his background in local sports – what schools he played for and what sports he played. Dill ties Tide Pods into sports – listen in to find out how!Mike gets into how he built his brand, got connected, and built his network of sources; He also gets into what happens when he breaks news that other folks don't have. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Atacolypse Food Truck Beer Segment: We tried Lazy Blu, a blueberry lemon shandy from Schitt's Brewing, a new local brewery. It's 5.3% ABV – and thanks to one of the guys from Schitt's dropping knowledge, we finally find out how ABV is computed (they use a hydrometer). This a dynamite first effort from these guys! 4.0/5.0! A recommended beer from Idiotville! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Mike was the last person who wore the Erie Bayhawks' “Clutch” Mascot costume – they didn't let him keep the costume. Mike's podcast, the perfectly named “The Michael Balko Show” has a huge variety of guests, ranging from Morten Andersen to Clifford Taylor IV. Dill, of course, pressures him to get CJ Beathard ASAP. We find out that Tim Tebow isn't a great guy. Shocking, we know. Near the end of the show, we have a surprise guest!Do you feel like you aren't getting enough Idiotville? A great, independent, non partisan book that covers issues related to our way of policing, the war on drugs, and militarized policing. The author, Radley Balko, provides loads of research and exposes a lot of history and scenarios in which policing methods and tactics clearly run wild, hurting and killing people as a result. The author asserts that our militarized way of policing is contradictory to the professed values of a free society and America. This isnt just a book about cops though, Balko emphasizes that our politicians, lawyers, prosecutors, and judges all play a part in the emboldening and empowerment of police officers, at the expense of the people. Over the past 25 years, more than 2,000 individuals have been exonerated in the United States after being wrongfully convicted of crimes they did not commit. There is good reason to believe that tens or even hundreds of thousands more languish in American prisons today. How this can happen unfolds in the riveting new book from Radley Balko and Tucker Carrington. The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist recounts the story of two Mississippi doctors—Dr. Steven Hayne, a medical examiner, and Dr. Michael West, a dentist—who built successful careers as the go-to experts for prosecutors and whose actions led many innocent defendants to land in prison. Some of the convictions then began to fall apart, including those of two innocent men who spent a combined 30 years in prison before being exonerated in 2008.Balko and Carrington reveal how Mississippi officials propelled West and Hayne to the top of the state’s criminal justice apparatus and then, through institutional failures and structural racism, empowered these two “experts” to produce countless flawed convictions on bad evidence and bogus science. Please join us for a conversation about the book and the broader lessons we can learn about criminal justice in our country. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Staff writer Amanda Haggard talks to journalist Radley Balko, who investigated the work of a Mississippi medical examiner named Steven Hayne, along with his dentistry sidekick Michael West. Balko discusses Hayne’s history and impact, which is darkly fascinating, as he testified in close to 80 percent of homicide trials in Mississippi for 20 years – often employing shoddy reasoning and pseudoscience. Balko will be releasing a book detailing the full story at the end of February, titled 'The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist: A True Story of Injustice in the American South.'

Patients who do not show a pCR following neoadjuvant chemotherapy have a worse prognosis. Dr Balko outlines the key genes and pathways thought to be related to pCR, talks about potential clinical trials to develop treatments and outlines the difficulties dividing patients according to their specific mutation.
