One fine afternoon I was listening to Fresh Air on NPR, and the interview totally drew me in. Terri Gross was interviewing a woman who did something out of her ideals and idealism. It was self-sacrificing. It took her time, a lot of it. It exposed her to danger, a lot of it. What was so compelling to me about the interview was that she had to explain that her mother, herself a person of high ideals and idealism, objected to what her daughter did, for reasons of her own principle. In fact, the mother loathed what her daughter did, and told her so.

How often do you listen when someone talks to you? I mean REALLY LISTEN to what is being said? Too often we listen to respond rather than listen to understand and that’s what this episode of YOUR CAREER Podcast is all about. Oscar Trimboli is the author of Deep Listening and is on a mission to create 100 million Deep Listeners around the world.“We speak between 125 and 175 word per minute, yet we can listen to 400 words per minute. That means that no matter how fast they speak, your mind can process three to four times more words. It’s this gap that causes you to drift off and be distracted when listening.”Host of his award-winning podcast, “Deep Listening” and a popular keynote speaker, Oscar is passionate about using the gift of listening to create greater understanding, positive change and a stronger global community. What are the conversations you are not listening to?Oscar works with chairs, boards of directors and executive teams in local, regional and global organisations, and has experienced firsthand the transformational impact when leaders listen beyond the world they hear. Oscar has worked with organisations including Cisco, Google, HSBC, News Corp, PayPal, Qantas, TripAdvisor helping executives and their teams to not only listen to what’s said by their customers and employees but what is unsaid.Find out about Oscar’s career journey, how he handles change and how deep listening has helped his consulting business grow.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has been conducting and regulating signals intelligence, SIGINT, since before the United States was born. To talk about how they do it across the pond, David Kris sat down with two experts on UK SIGINT and SIGINT regulation: Michael Drury and Tony Comer, both veterans of Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the British counterpart to our own National Security Agency. Michael was GCHQ's first full-time legal advisor from 1996 to 2010, when he joined the private sector, and Tony was GCHQ's historian until his retirement earlier this year. They compared and contrasted the U.S. and UK experience with SIGINT, SIGINT regulation, popular support for SIGINT and intelligence in general, and also some cutting-edge issues, including how SIGINT works today, synergies between SIGINT and cyber, GDPR encryption and online harms.

Laura Catena may have one of the most unique resumes that you’d ever come across. Regarded as the face of Argentine wine, Catena presides at the helm of her family’s lauded winery Bodega Catena Zapata, which laid the foundations for the country’s wine to be recognized at the level of its European counterparts. She is also the founder of the Catena Institute of Wine, which focuses on science-driven ways to support and showcase Argentina’s winemaking regions. And, until recently, Catena had worked as an emergency room physician in San Francisco, a job she held concurrently with her wine-related roles.  On the surface, one might think there are few similarities between the responsibilities of a doctor and vintner. Yet, as part of the conversation featured in this episode, Catena explained that her professions intersect in ways that make her better in both roles and allow her to provide more effective care to her patients and craft exceptional wine. We further explored this dynamic in our interview and also delved into Catena Zapata’s history and scientific approach to winemaking. Catena also explained why she feels a heavy responsibility of carrying the whole country of Argentina on her shoulders, why she believes that it is critical to “really listen to people who disagree with you” and discussed her passion for achieving sustainability through innovation. Show notes:  0:44: Interview: Laura Catena, Managing Director, Bodega Catena Zapata -- Taste Radio editor Ray Latif sat down with Catena for an expansive interview in which she discussed how she is supporting workers at her family’s winery in Argentina via telemedicine during the Covid crisis, the origins of Bodega Catena Zapata and why her father was inspired by American winemakers and discussed how malbec has been the key to Argentina’s ascendance in the global wine industry. She also spoke about why she was initially hesitant to join the family business and chose to study and practice medicine instead, how wine transformed her home province of Mendoza into a thriving region and how Catena Zapata’s rise to international recognition was supported by its focus on science and research about Argentina’s climate and soil. Later, she explained how the winery succeeded by winning “hearts and minds,” and why it’s so important to “understand how nature works so that we can preserve it.” Brands in this episode: Bodega Catena Zapata

I know I am probably not alone in this, and that many of you also feel like God is not paying attention to the seemingly insignificant problems in your life. Here is a short story of a how God took a “small issue” to teach me a big lesson.

Not to mention, whatever is shared, doesn’t hold our attention. This frame of mind can apply to anyone we encounter (e.g. our spouse, children, friends, job, or just people in general). So why is that?Could it be that we don’t need to know every little detail of what’s being shared?Or do we just respond differently from certain cues that we are programmed to pay attention to?Lastly, do we even care?Well, chime in to hear my guest - Rocky Steve, Derrick, John, and myself (Bazz) talk about some of the reasons why we as men do hear ya, we just don't listen.

Today you’re being reminded of the importance of listening. Listening is an art. Often people think they’re listening, when actually they’re just waiting to respond. Today make a conscious effort to listen. Listen to people. Really listen to people in conversation with you. What are they saying, and what aren’t they saying? Listen for the tone, the unspoken, the nuances. Listen to yourself. Listen to your intuition, your feelings, your body, the quiet nudges and knowings. Listen to the sounds in your environment, what haven’t you noticed before? What sounds do you love, and which set your teeth on edge? How does listening add value to your life, deepen your connection with others, and enhance your own experience of life? Pause, and take a breath. As you stop, pay attentions and consciously listen.   Today’s SHEro Action: Today’s SHEro action is to listen. Practice listening. Get better at listening. Listen without filters. Listen without an agenda. Just listen. Listen to yourself, to people, to your environment, to this podcast. Pay attention to the words, the sounds, the tone. Listen to what’s not said or missing. Ask questions to qualify what you’re not sure of. Be present. Stay curious. Just listen. How could your experience of life be enhanced if you were better at listening? How would the world be a better place if people listened, and I mean really listened? Pause, and take a breath. As you stop and listen.                Today’s Affirmation: “I value the importance of listening and being heard”   http://rebeccaanuwen.com/really-listen

Between the three of us, we have done a LOT of interviews. Some of our most memorable experiences come from our recruiting experience and the candidate interviews we’ve conducted along the way. It takes effort to be a good interviewer! And it is easy to be a jerky interviewer, without even meaning to be a jerk. In this episode, we provide some practical tips to help you avoid being a jerk to candidates. Key Takeaways: The best interviewers lead an interview in a way that brings out the best in a candidate. Who does it serve to try and sink them?? Then you’ll just have to keep interviewing more candidates! Prepare in advance and have your questions ready. Take the time to think about why you would ask particular questions - don’t simply ask them because you think they are standard and expected. And then, once you’ve asked the question, listen. Really LISTEN to the candidate’s answers. Who knows what kind of conversation you could have? Check your bias! Sarah suggests giving Project Implicit a try. https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/

Phil’s guest on this episode of the IT Career Energizer podcast is Rob Allen. He leads impactful, cohesive development teams from the ground up to solve thorny problems.  He turns wild-west-style engineering organisations into professional powerhouses by leading untested initiatives through to successful deployment and broader adoption.    In this episode, Phil and Rob Allen discuss why setting clear goals is essential. As well as how to work out what they should be and achieve them. They also discuss the benefits of learning to be inclusive, listen closely and be empathic in your work life. As well as touching on how and when to reassess things so that you become even more effective and grow your career.   KEY TAKEAWAYS: (3.17) TOP CAREER TIP The best GPS system can’t help you if you do not have a destination in mind. Career-wise you need to know where you are going in order to plot a way of getting there.   Rob points out that setting good career goals is not necessarily about setting your sights on working for a specific company or role. In the podcast, he explains how to get to where you want to be in both your work and personal life.   (0.00) WORST CAREER MOMENT In 2010, Rob travelled with his wife, a professor, to a conference she was attending. The world in which his wife worked meant that they met up with the same people several times a year. So, over time, many of them had become friends. When Rob walked into the bar someone he knew well slapped the bar and said something like – here’s Rob Allen, often wrong, seldom in doubt. The guy had been drinking, but, that comment still stung.   Worse than that, when Rob thought about it, he realised there was quite a lot of truth in that observation. It was an awful moment, but it led to him changing his ways. He started to stay quiet and listen far more at meetings. When he had a question, he still asked it, but made sure it did not sound like he was offering an opinion. Changes that proved to be very beneficial. So, in the end, his worst career moment turned out to be his best moment.   In the podcast, Rob explains the changes he made and how he and everyone around him have been able to benefit as a result of them.   (12.59) THE FUTURE OF CAREERS IN I.T Rob believes that in the past 7 or 8 years, the IT industry has made real progress in terms of project and people management. These changes are having a profound and positive impact on the way we work and what we can achieve.     (14.37) THE REVEAL What first attracted you to a career in I.T.? – Rob reached a stage in his life where he desperately needed to make more money. So, he decided to put his HTML and CSS skills to use and began his IT career. What’s the best career advice you received? – Shut up. Today on the Inner Circle, it's a powerful and vulnerable conversation that centers around listening to your body and what it's telling you. We often allow pain to become our new normal, or spend time searching for answers and trying just to push through another day while going into our “power mode”. Laura Krosky joins Carrie to openly and honestly share her story on illness from breast implants. She talks about why she decided to get them, how they made her very sick for years and how she discovered thousands of women had a story just like hers. Laura also opens up on getting them out, and what it is like to readjust and fully accept a natural body. What You'll Hear in This Episode: Laura's story of being raised in a conservative Christian family, and how that played a role upon her body image and self-confidence as a female. Her love of coaching, holding space for others and showing them the path to accomplish their own dreams. More about Laura's time working at Zappo's, and what she loved so much about the job. That Laura was someone in touch with her own body and fitness, which is why not feeling well or in shape was so distant and unexpected for her. The thoughts behind Laura's decision to get breast implants, and why her body would create a capsule around them and begin to fight them as a foreign object. That Laura felt good for about 2 - 2.5 years until she didn't. She explains her debilitating symptoms of joint pain, bloating, exhaustion and much more. How her masseuse was the one to plant the seed that her implants may be causing the illness, and why that thought originally felt like a failure to her.   Laura's discovery of thousands of other women that also shared her story, and why it helped her to know she wasn't alone. That there are great doctors who can help with empathy, knowledge, and compassion. The process of getting an explant, and the life-changing ways it turned her life back around. How awesome her soulmate husband is, and how he showed her support and love for who she is on the inside and the outside. How she feels in her natural body and the adjustments she has made in life moving forward with no implants. Quotes: “How can I teach a workshop on vulnerability and not stand up and be vulnerable?” “The thought of not being able to control myself felt like a failure for me.” “I started to see the women's story after story, and I felt like they were all my story.” “There was so much gratitude that happened, now I was back to myself.” Mentioned: Breast Implant Illness and Healing by Nicole Journey Into the Inner Circle: Carrie Doll @CarrieADoll – Twitter @carriedollconsulting – Instagram Carrie Doll – Facebook Please rate, review and follow the podcast! On this episode of Hanging With Apes the guys start by giving their thoughts on Eminem's surprise album, "Kamikaze." Slim Shady is back with a vengeance, dissing rappers Drake, Lil Yachty, Lil Pump, Lil Xan, Machine Gun Kelly, Migos, Tyler The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt as well as rap critics Joe Budden, DJ Akademiks, Lord Jamar and Charlamagne Tha God. With headline grabbing rap lines and no filter whatsoever it is safe to say Shady is back. The guys then switch gears and give their thoughts on an ad by Bonobos called #EvolveTheDefinition where they have a variety of men recite a dictionary definition of masculinity and then proceed to disagree with that definition and suggest giving it a new meaning that is more inclusive of all types of men. Furthermore, this was not received well by people on social media platforms like Twitter and YouTube. Finally, K. Cartoon discusses chapter 9 (Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don't) on Jordan B. Peterson's latest book, "12 Rules for Life: An Antidote To Chaos." This sparks a discussion about communication and fear of new information in society.

Last Friday, I had the privilege of speaking to students in Ms. Rhynes’ English class from Oakland Tech High School for the 3rd Annual Literacy Field Trip hosted at Barnes and Noble in Emeryville, California. Barbara Tavres, the Community Business Development Manager at B&N, and Ms. Rhynes partnered together several years ago because they both believe in the power of reading and the written word. Each student is given a $75 gift card to purchase books. Their preference was to have my co-author and daughter, Kelly Skeen, speak to the students about our book Communication Skills for Teens: How to Listen, Express and Connect for Success. But she was in Washington DC studying for final exams, so they got stuck with me. Kelly and I decided that I should present the foundational chapter of our book, “How to Really Listen,” since listening well is the key component for successful relationships in all areas of our lives. The students got really involved when we discussed common blocks to listening. In honor of this event, this week on Relationships 2.0 I will re-broadcast my chat with my co-author and daughter, Kelly Skeen, about Communication Skills for Teens: How to Listen, Express and Connect for Success. About the book: Communication is an essential life skill that every teen must learn. Based on the New Harbinger classic, Messages, this book will teach you the necessary skills—such as assertiveness, active listening, and compassion—to become an effective communicator for life. In an age of social media, texting, and ever-evolving technology, it’s easy to forget how to engage in real, face-to-face communication, a critical skill for your future success! As you become more connected to your smartphone and the internet, your ability to connect in person may diminish. But technology doesn’t replace the need for effective communication skills. In fact, successful personal and professional relationships are dependent upon connecting with people face-to-face. Communication Skills for Teens provides the guidance you need to become a better communicator and succeed in all areas of life. You’ll also learn tons of essential life skills, including active listening, assertiveness, clarifying language, the art of an apology, compassion, interviewing skills, family communication, and more. Each chapter focuses on one key aspect of communication, offers a real teen’s perspective, and includes practical exercises to help you apply what you’ve learned in the real world—away from your computer and smartphone screens. By following the practical, skills-based tips in each chapter of this book, you’ll learn powerful communication techniques to last a lifetime. For more information about the book, www.kellyskeen.com

Many states are legalizing medical marijuana, but leaving "next steps" in the dust. Patients, caregivers and researchers get stuck in the middle. Researchers have to walk a fine line in discovering the full potential of marijuana use, including cancer, seizures, arthritis, PTSD and brain illnesses such as dementia and Parkinson's. Only 6% of studies on marijuana analyze its medicinal properties. Sick patients in a state where medical marijuana is legalized often have to "fill their prescription" through drug dealers. It's like lawmakers are saying, "You want it and have proved the point that medical marijuana is beneficial. Now you...patients and medical community...figure it out." Expert guest Michael Bloom, Caregiving Without Regret™, and I discuss the impact on families, caregivers and patients. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Emmy®-award winning chief med. correspondent, recently focused on U.S. federal laws that consider marijuana a drug with no medicinal value and serious scientists who say they're wrong. Shockingly, Marijuana is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, grouped with heroin, LSD and PCP. Schedule II drugs -- still considered to have high abuse potential but with accepted medical uses and considered safe for use under medical supervision -- include cocaine, morphine and methamphetamine. That's right, federal law considers marijuana more dangerous than meth. Really? Listen live M-F 2:00 pm ET www.W4CS.com, Joni at www.JoniAldrich.com
