We had the pleasure of interviewing Within Temptation over Zoom video!Dutch metallers Within Temptation recently released their brand-new studio album Bleed Out with a provocative, zombie-vampire-gore-fest-splatter-horror video for their current single "Ritual". Brutal and brilliantly comedic, whilst calling to mind the work of legendary animator Ralph Bakshi and the Rotoscope school of animation, the video for "Ritual" calls out the behaviour of male sexual predators in the workplace, the street, the sports field, and more. What if women behaved as aggressively as the men who seek to take advantage of them, and what if they fought back to exact a terrible revenge?Singer Sharon den Adel says, "'Ritual' is a sexual song, about seduction and a woman taking power in a male-dominated world. It was inspired by watching Tarantino's movie From Dusk Til Dawn and is a light-hearted moment in our album, which focuses mainly on the political and repressive issues in the world. We have always wanted to do a horror-style video for Halloween, and this song gave us the perfect chance to do that, using AI-technology to create something truly awe-inspiring. But it also addresses some of the recent news-stories of men behaving badly and imagines what would happen if a bad-ass woman fought back in the most terrible way. So get ready for blood, violence, fangs, and humor. The album Bleed Out has been released to worldwide acclaim, showcasing Within Temptation at the very forefront of contemporary metal, and unafraid to take a social and political stand on many of the issues in the world today. As epic as it is unflinchingly outspoken, Within Temptation have delivered a fist-in-the-air proclamation of both their moral convictions and their fearless approach to music. We want to hear from you! Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Josh Langsam, the grandson of the one and only Cab Calloway. Now aside from having a great name, Josh tells host Josh Mills about the legacy, the history and the future of one of America's greatest entertainers of all-time. Starting in the 1920's Cab Calloway was a band leader, performer, author, singer, actor, song writer and his influence ranged from live performances, recorded music, film, animation, fashion – the guy did it all. He was the first black entertainer to sell one million copies with his signature song, “Minnie The Moocher” in 1931. He was also the first black entertainer to have his own radio show. None other than George Gershwin based the character Sportin' Life from Porgy and Bess after Cab. Pioneering animator Max Fleischer invented the Rotoscope and animates Cab as a Walrus in a Betty Boop cartoon based on “Minnie The Moocher”. Are you getting the picture, yet? We spoke to Josh about the Harlem Renaissance, the famed Cotton Club, the infamous Dizzy Gillespie spitball that wasn't, how our host Josh's family played a major part in Cab's career, Cab's iconic fashion sense and much more. Of course, we talk about Cab's “Minnie The Moocher” disco hit in the 80s, the movie Cotton Club and indeed, The Blues Brothers, which introduced Cab to a whole new, younger audience and revitalized his career. If you've ever wanted to know what someone does or wants to do with a legacy/estate as an heir to a famous person, this is the episode for you. It's very fun and frankly, an educational episode which hits upon both the entertainer and the man Cab Calloway. Take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

I've always loved rotoscope animation—movies like A Scanner Darkly, Waking Life and Amazon's Undone TV series. Not only do I love the style but I believe it opens up possibilities creatively. And because of that, I always wanted to create my own movie using the style. But I didn't have the money to do so. Instead, I utilized pre-existing techniques and combined them into a method for achieving my goal. (For reference, here's the final result of my first go around: https://youtu.be/qGbw1So77yg. And here's a full Q&A regarding the project: https://youtu.be/mVhgNV8H-kY.) This tutorial showcases the steps so you to can do it yourself. For the Photoshop settings specifically, you can follow these tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivLixXcaAnI (cartoon effect), https://youtu.be/phl48dTE1KI (oil painting effect). Also, I don't mention this in the episode, but another way to achieve this look is to use EBSynth. I haven't successfully used it, but here's a resource about that: https://youtu.be/DlHoRqLJxZY. Join Caitlin, Ira, and special guest Tommy Pallotta as they discuss the evolution of rotoscoping in modern filmmaking. As an award winning producer and director of animation, Tommy's influence on the art form is instantly recognizable thanks to his work on Richard Linklater's Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly, Apollo 10 1/2, as well as the Amazon Prime series Undone. We talk about his career and the role of rotoscoping in the world of animation. The Fantasy/Animation Footnotes return with a new podcast episode on the form and function of motion capture as mode of computerised performance in an era of digital mediation. For Episode 15, topics for this quickfire discussion include motion capture as a mode of digital puppetry and links to both the theatrical tradition of performing objects and the Rotoscope; discourses of control that feed into the creativity of ‘mo-cap' technologies; industry narratives, labour hierarchies, and the question of who performs the digital image; ambivalent connections between voice and body in motion captured characters; and what happens when human physicality is transcribed via digital processing. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

A few months ago, I released a short proof of concept film called Playtest (https://youtu.be/qGbw1So77yg). It uses a style similar to A Scanner Darkly and Amazon's Undone, except it didn't require a team of animators to pull off. In this episode, I talked with Alina Vission (@AlinaVission) and share how we pulled it off. After listening, kindly feel free to ask questions or offer opinions of your own, whether down in the comment section or by hitting me up on social media @PhilSvitek. When Another World was first released in 1991, it blew everyone’s minds. The lengthy cutscene that introduced the game and the cinematic quality of its presentation was close to unheard of. It fused dynamic and lethal laser combat with the rotoscoped platforming that was seen in Prince of Persia. And it did it all in a time and place utterly unlike Earth, bringing to life a setting that truly felt like Another World. But 30 years have passed since Another World’s debut. The features that were once revolutionary wouldn’t even make a footnote on the back of the game box. Instant death and trial and error are now dirty words, and action and puzzles very rarely combine well together. Has Another World, the vision of a single person, kept up with all the innovations and modernisations of adventure platformers? Or is it outdated and frustrating, making a mockery of its once forward thinking design? On this episode, we discuss:How well does Another World set a sense of place? Did we truly believe we were on an alien planet as we ran through its weathered halls? Is there any place for guesswork and trial and error in a video game? Or is it a fundamentally flawed concept, one that we should be glad rarely sees the light of day?How well does Another World control, and how do the controls impact the overall experience? Are there situations in which clunky control schemes are justifiable? We answer these questions and many more on the 60th Episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!---Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherAnother World OST: Jean-François Freitas---Are we heretics for criticising this sacred cow of video game history?

Troy Kokol returns to the DTP! This time around we discuss his new single 'Like A Record', and its accompanying music video. Last time Troy joined us we talked about how he learned claymation to create his 'Lightbulb' music video, and once again he has applied his drive to the visual narrative of 'Like A Record'. This time though he challenged himself with a different technique, learning rotoscoping in order to help bring the visual narrative of this song to life! We also discuss what the last year has been like since we last connected, talking about Troy's work as a producer and a songwriter!

In this episode, John Athayde, the man behind an experimental rock project known as Rotoscope, discusses the impact of U2's seventh studio record from 1991 known as Achtung Baby during his salad days to the present day. We dig deep into Achtung's heavy themes (biblical, divorce), guitar tones by The Edge, Bono's anthemic lyrics and the addition of dance and industrial sounds to U2's sonic palette. Enjoy!

The spot where still photography, video, animation, and drawing on your shoes meet is where you can find Sam Cannon and Matthias Brown. They may not always be together at that spot, but they’re sure to be within shouting distance. On today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we discuss the role that still photography plays in their work and how they see the distinctions between still and moving images, as well as between old and new technologies. Matthias Brown is also TraceLoops, an “animation experiment centered around hand-drawn, physical animations that experiments with the creation and perception of movement.” He specializes in stop-motion, black-and-white animation and his work has been commissioned by Converse, MTV, Purina, Warby Parker, and others, and his fine art work has been displayed at the Tate Modern. Sam Cannon is an artist and director who works between still photography and video and focuses on the “manipulation of time, space, and the female form.” Whichever format the final image takes—still, video, GIF—her work asks us to explore the “never-ending” moment. She has produced commercial assignments for Nike, Samsung, and H&M, editorial and fashion pieces, and her fine art work has been exhibited extensively, including at MANA Contemporary, in Jersey City. True multi-disciplinarians, Cannon and Brown are comfortable with a variety of techniques and art forms; we discuss rotoscopes and oscilloscopes, After Effects and Dragonframe, projection pieces and soap sculptures. We also talk briefly on camera gear, self-portraiture, William Kentridge and, once and for all, we resolve the pronunciation of GIF. Join us for this fun conversation. HOT-COCOA SHOW! While Jon Favreau's "The Jungle Book" is wowing audiences it's also kicked up a conversation about the role of Motion Capture in movies and if it should be considered Live-Action or Animation. We've talked about mo-cap on the podcast but this time I decided to do my research on the path that the technology has taken over the years and how it relates to the distinction in what the final product is called and broke it all down the way only we do on the RubberOnion Animation Podcast! I'd love to hear your thoughts (preferably after you listen to the show haha) in the comments section below. Enjoy the show! Sketchy takes acid in the form of "A Scanner Darkly." This 2006 rotoscoped film by Richard Linklater is based on the Philip K. Dick novel of the same name and has an all-star cast featuring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey, Jr, Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder and Rory Cochrane. Enjoy! Attack of the Killer Soundtrack - Episode 26 This week we sit down with the genre-defying band - The Dead Deads. We learn a little about the members themselves, mostly based on their love of movies and music. And of course along the way, we build an interesting and well-rounded soundtrack. And while one member of band pins down the ultimate, phenomenal pussy soundtrack, we also discuss... Instagram pizza pictures, TARS, continuing to be dicks to the poor, Miley Cyrus, experiencing horror vicariously, Rotoscope, indie boners, Ann Getty, I don't do anything cool really, this is super unpleasant, I had snot everywhere... it was such a good movie, literally animate everything we're singing, hanging out on a cruise ship, Disney movies, a Metal/Rock/Punk/Dance Party, Snowpiercer, dropping off a cup of sugar, trust the sci fi fan, a see-through mesh black thing, a key moment for musicians and film lovers alike, being punctual, it's an add your own curse song, having good teeth, favorite robot, Quentin Tarantino, the biggest nerd, what's happening now?, get in yo bunk, unless an alien pops out or we're in outer space I don't really care, some possession movie, super worried about Walter White, I could party on that soundtrack until I die, the greenest person in the room, a vision quest of horror movies, being assigned a dead name, predestined to be a dick, Slayer Rules, a four hour fight about Disney soundtracks, trust the parameters of social media, Mad Libs song, my hard drive is full, Elvis mouth vs. Billy mouth, post-apocalyptic Schindler's List, leopard pants, quite the entertaining little chimp, the dude in the red thong, I don't do anything cool really, a well-organized genre explosion in Drop D, Interstellar, Taylor Hawkins, BW3 trivia... and a luckdragon. "...but that song came on and I was just like 'What the hell is this?! Must obtain track!'" For more on The Deads Deads, go to: http://thedeaddeads.com/
My first ever rotoscoped animation. lackadaisical monster reading the paper. Pretty short, very happy with it. Going to extend this project to include some watercoloring and paint splatters.
Episode 09 is here (insert your own witticism). After finishing everything off, I am noticing some slight distortion in the host vocal (that means when I talk). I was experimenting this week with a new compression plug-in to get a punchier sound on parts of the show. In early production, things sounded fine. After I finished up I heard the junk. Rather than tear everything back apart to fix it, I wanted to go ahead and get it out to you. This did not affect the music itself in anyway. Next week I'll go in and tweak the settings on that. In the meantime, I can recommend that you turn the volume on your media player or iTunes down a bit and turn up your speaker volume instead. Occasionally this little "gainstaging" trick will help. The stats: 26:34 and 30 MBShow Notes:00:00 Episode Tag (09)00:03 SkyPieces Theme01:39 *Dusty Hughes - Drowning In You05:29 *Texture - Wilmington10:37 *Rotoscope - Drive17:42 *Corporate Whore - Runaway21:28 *Lark Watts - Lucy's Song26:20 SkyPieces Bump - Addawww.skypiecesradio.comwww.larkwatts.commusic.podshow.comskypiecesradio@gmail.comNote on past episodes: I am working on switching a few things around server-wise. We welcome Francisco González of Grundislav Games to the show to talk about his experience with creating adventure games, the science of rotoscoping and animation in retro-esque design, and the direction of the genre itself! A fascinating look at craft from a wonderful guest.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/no-cartridge-audio/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
