Expressing emotions can be complex....On this episode we're back into the deep end of short films and short filmmaking with films playing at the Toronto International Film Festival this coming Sept 7th through the 17th. Playing as a part of Short Cuts Programme #1, let's look at 'Meteor'.Combining a stunning visual aesthetic and acutely personal reflections, Atefeh Khademolreza delivers an expression of grief and defiance in the face of the repression suffered by women and the LGBTQ+ community in Iran.We had the unique pleasure of talking with Atefeh about what she wanted to tell the story, the techniques she used and so very much more.....Short Cuts Programme #1 has it's first screening this Thursday night, visit tiff.net for more details.
For some people that's a dystopian vision. But for Cristóbal Valenzuela, it's a mission statement: Valenzuela is the co-founder and CEO of Runway, an AI startup that wants to radically change the way movies and TV are made. Right now the buzzy company - currently valued at $1.5 billion - helps TV shows like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once create special effects at a fraction of the traditional cost. But Valenzuela has much bigger ambitions for his product. And he thinks generative AI will be a major part of the stuff we watch in the near future. He talks to Vox's Peter Kafka about the promise of that prediction — and the costs. What's up, dudes? It's an episode so big I had to have 2 sets of guests! Yes, it's the space cop BraveStarr! I've got 3 new members joining my BraveStarr club: AA and CM Chuck from Just Another Friday Night, and Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas! Everyone wanted to talk a BraveStarr Christmas and “Tex's Terrible Night!”In this 1987 Filmation version of “A Christmas Carol,” Marshall BraveStarr and his deputy 30-30 leave Fort Kerium unattended at Christmas. When Stampede and Tex-Hex plan to exploit the lawmen's absence with an attack, Shaman takes action Charles Dickens-style! Shaman magically transports Tex-Hex from his bed to the past! Tex is forced to relive leaving his love Ursula, double crossing McBride, (almost?) dying in a crash, and being reconstituted as a sorcerous bandit.Shaman then shows Tex the present. Evidently Ursula and her new beau are heading to Fort Kerium for Christmas! The future, in typical Dickensian fashion, is bleak and continues without Tex leading his gang. Yes, the grizzled outlaw sees and embraces his own tombstone!Tex rediscovers a bit of his humanity as he sabotages his master's plan to attack on Christmas Day. The town is saved, as is his long lost love! This one's got it all! Well, except all the ghosts… Rotoscoping? Check. Fewer animation frames per second? Yup. Stereotypical cowboy junk? Definitely! Steph, Craig, and 40 other animators spent years animating their new film Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood only to be told that it wouldn't be considered as an animated movie for the ‘The Best Animated Feature Award'. They created the film using a notoriously time-consuming form of animation called ‘Rotoscoping' where the artists creates animated sequences by tracing over live-action footage frame by frame. They join us to discuss the controversy around their film, how they fought (and won) against the Oscar's decision, and proved their film was animated. We talk about the problems with ‘The Best Animated Feature' award, why films like Avatar aren't considered animated movies, and the new AIanimation technique that's been emerging… “For Apollo, we made a minute and a half a week and that's with 40 animators busting it as fast as they can.' - Steph Swope What is Covered: The trailer for Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood The controversy around the animation of Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood. Communicating clearly is probably the most difficult thing anyone can do in business. Our job as Instructional Designers is often to make better communication happen under the guise of "we need everyone to be better trained on _______". It doesn't matter what level you are at within your training team or the overall organization. Everyone from the new intern to the experienced CLO needs to improve their ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts in order to influence others into action. This is where Visual Language Theory comes into play. Kevin Thorn joins us to explore concepts on how to better communicate ideas and transform those ideas into a visual language. One of the most important aspects of this process (and coincidentally in our ID work) is extracting you and your stakeholders' ideas and converting them into a universal visual language that your target audience will clearly understand. We'll discuss the entire process using old school "pen & paper" so that it's accessible to everyone including those professionals not interested in mastering new design tools.Join us for this session and find out how you can also get more in-depth instruction and training on these processes from Kevin at other events like DevLearn and StepAway.Desgin.Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on Twitter. From answering the phones at ILM to previs on The Phantom Menace, Alia Agha tells Ed Kramer how she became a “matchmove master” in CGI Fridays Episode 5. It's hardly surprising when Ed Kramer introduces us to someone with a hand in one of the landmark visual effects sequences in science fiction cinema. Rotoscoping? Disney magic? Karate? Videotaping your brother? Yes, on this episode we talk about Prince of Persia. A game released originally on a dying system, and saved via a large number of ports. In late 1989 Jordan Mechner released his spiritual successor to Karateka, on a system already losing the battle to newer computers. Is it a platform puzzler? A fighting game? A game about your nemesis? We'll answer these questions and more today on Press B to Cancel Press B To Cancel now on Youtube! Our Drink'n'Draw host, Kevin Thorn, recently took his family to Disney World and he sketchnoted the entire experience. Of course he did.If you think this doesn't have any relationship or impact on your work, well, you'd be wrong.Analyzing business processes is a mandatory part of L&D work. We listen. We ask questions. We watch. And then magic happens... poof... instructional objectives are written. While that may be how your stakeholders see it, we all know the invisible magic is often a struggle in organizing data and working through business processes that often don't make sense. Most often these processes are trapped inside a SME's head and it's your job to get it out. Understand it. Document it. And then ask if that looks about right? You might already use a spreadsheet and outline the process, or maybe a flow charting app. But have you ever just wanted to sketch it out and get the first draft visual done quickly in order to get their feedback?Kevin Thorn joins us and offers an opportunity for you to practice your sketchnoting skills this summer. You're taking a vacation anyways, so you might as well do a little professional upskilling at the same time, right? And after the August IDIODC break, we expect to see examples of your work ;)Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on Twitter. The Spine of Night is an animated horror/fantasy/adventure anthology starring Lucy Lawless as a swamp-witch! Those of you who remember Heavy Metal fondly will want to check this episode out, as will anyone who has heard the term "Rotoscoping" and has always wondered what it means. Hey everyone! Rotoscoping, a niche style of filmmaking, is the center of our discussions this week. Both films are Richard Linklater's, our Recent Review being Netflix's Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood and our Geriatric Cinematic being Waking Life (2001). If you don't know what rotoscoping is, you should definitely check these films out. Our middle segment this week is What the F*** Did We Just Watch?! Sony Pictures' Morbius is the sad excuse for a movie to enter our crosshairs. If you've seen the movie, you'll likely understand why we just had to talk about it. Next week, our Recent Review is A24's Everything Everywhere All at Once, which is currently in theaters with a nationwide release on Friday, April 8th. Our Geriatric Cinematic is Donnie Darko, streaming on HBO Max or available to rent on Apple TV, Amazon, YouTube, or other VOD services. We continue Dolin December with a look at one of the most technically impressive films ever covered on the Kulturecast: The Wizard of Speed and Time. Directed and starring special effects maven Mike Jittlov, it follows him as he attempts to get his special effects-laden film done inside the cutthroat Hollywood system. It's reminiscent of early live-action Disney films mixed with a heavy helping of truly awe-inspiring practical effects. The Projection Booth's Mike White and artist Maggie the Odd joins Chris to talk about the film, the effects, and what it may have inspired. The big wide world can be a scary place for neurodiverse people — but Exceptional Minds can help them find their place. Founded in 2011, this remarkable non-profit training academy trains individuals on the autism spectrum to become visual effects and animation professionals. It also runs its own studio, which has put graduates to work on Black Widow, Loki, and a whole animated segment for Sesame Street. In this podcast, Exceptional Minds' Executive Director David Siegel explains how his six-year-old son inspired him to join the academy. He also describes how he works with studios and software companies to give students the knowledge they need for a career. Joining him is VFX Studio Supervisor David Wolgemuth, who discusses finding common ground with students and helping them make the most of their skillsets.
We do a lot of drawing with Kevin. In this episode we're looking at taking those drawing skills and adding them to instructional videos. There are a lot of methods for adding graphical elements to videos and we'll talk about a few techniques and concepts that can be very useful for instructional videos. Kevin will be sharing some advanced video methods like converting your videos to animated gifs and rotoscoping. Gifs may not be viewed as possible instructional media, but we'll help you see them in a different way. We'll also be discussing why an instructional designer needs to understand video production terms like rotoscoping and others.Advanced video concepts will level up your instructional videos by adding that element of pizazz that so many internal stakeholders and clients request. Summer is the perfect time to level up your production skills. We'll introduce these concepts and show you some examples. Then we'll give you a challenge to learn one of these skills and create an example during the month of August while IDIODC is on a break. We end the second annual Jess Byard June with a film that is on the list for being one of the worst of all time, a true dud: Cool World. Starring Brad Pitt and Gabriel Byrne, it centers on the two as a displaced police officer and a comic book artist both attempting to escape an animated reality called "Cool World" While it may sound like "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", that comparison begins and ends with live-action and animation. Scary Stories We Tell's Jess Byard and artist Maggie the Odd join Chris to talk all about the film, Pitt's performance, and Holli Would. Terry Molatore grew up in Los Angeles, the youngest of six children. In the 1970's she attended UC Santa Cruz and later worked at the Nuart movie theater on Santa Monica Blvd. She landed a job doing traditional rotoscoping on The Empire Strikes Back for an LA company called VCE which eventually led to a gig at ILM that wound up lasting 22 years. Terry left ILM to work at Imagemovers and later travelled to New Zealand to work at Weta Digital. Just before the pandemic, she retired from visual effects and is now developing stories connected to her family experience and background. Terry is one of my all time favorite ILMrs and we have a great conversation about her background, old friends, growing up an LA kid, and the state of the world.
Sometimes we have to travel in order to get something glorious... We may not be in Austin, Texas but a little bit of SXSW is coming to you as we are now fresh on the heels of the world premiere of 'The Spine of Night' This film is an Ultra-violent, epic fantasy set in a land of magic follows heroes from a different eras and cultures battling against a malevolent force. It doesn't get much more gloriously old school then this film as it's bathed in blood, nudity and fantasy that was pulled straight out of the 1980's. We got the distinct pleasure to sit down with writer/director's Phillip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King to talk about the film, how using rotoscope animation was the way to go and consciously crafting some genuine midnight movie going madness that we can hopefully experience one day on the big screen again...
Episode 79 of Making Tracks arrives like a Jakku summer and brings with it a Star Destroyer-stuffed sand dune of news. We discuss the arrival of The Bad Batch to Disney Plus on 4th May, Temuera Morrison talking Boba Fett, Ewan McGregor getting into fighting shape for Obi-Wan Kenobi, new Hasbro Fan Celebration reveals, Bill Burr and Rob Lowe talking The Mandalorian, Daisy Ridley as a potential Spider-Woman and how Spider-Man actor Tom Holland could have been Finn in the sequel trilogy. Happy 2021 everybody!!!!! For this fun first of year Quackcast We do a commentary and reaction to the Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta classic sword and sorcery animated movie from 1983, Fire and Ice! Tantz and Banes have never, ever seen it before so it was a new expereince to them and maybe to YOU as well? Fire and Ice is a simple fantasy story about evil prince Necron who wants to rule over all the lands using his control of a huge glacier. Brave Princess Teegra, Larn (mullet head), and Darkwolf (the Deathdealer), team up to battle to stop him destroying the southern lands. It was done with rotoscoped animation which made the figures look quite realistic. Rotoscoping is basically filming real actors and then taking out the background and painting over their bodies and turning them into cartoons. It's an analogue old fashion way of doing motion capture, like they do in modern 3D CGI animation. Our Commentary begins at the 16.40 minute mark! To watch along with us, go to https://youtube.com and search for “Fire and Ice” The musical feature this week that Gunwallace has given us is theme to O Sarilho: Exotic, Eastern, jazzy groove with a European flare. Troy Kokol returns to the DTP! This time around we discuss his new single 'Like A Record', and its accompanying music video. Last time Troy joined us we talked about how he learned claymation to create his 'Lightbulb' music video, and once again he has applied his drive to the visual narrative of 'Like A Record'. This time though he challenged himself with a different technique, learning rotoscoping in order to help bring the visual narrative of this song to life! We also discuss what the last year has been like since we last connected, talking about Troy's work as a producer and a songwriter!

When it comes to animated masks in the Flame products, one question that always gets asked is how do you offset a vertex that already contains animation? For instance, the animation may have been tracked or key-framed but now you'd like to move the same vertices and keep the original animation. This video will cover the vertex offsetting technique for both the Gmask Tracer and the older Gmask Toolset.
In this video, you'll cover rotoscoping or masking using the new Manager view in Flame 2020. The Manager is a much more simplified way of working with some of Flame's tools. And whether you're a beginner or an experienced Flame artist, the Manager will allow you to access a whole range of functionality without digging deep into the node flow graph. Other videos cover the Manager in the context of grading and compositing.

The Novel Philip K. Dick sort of wrote this about himself and his experiences with the Berkeley drug culture. “Everything in A Scanner Darkly I, actually saw.” This novel is probably the least scifi of Dick’s work. Rotoscroping Other famous examples of rotoscroping, but Linklater’s are the first to do it 100%. Interesting custom software with layering techniques. Perfect for this film with its less than firm grip on reality. Drug Addiction We are squares and we know roughly nothing about drugs. But it sure seems bad. Especially the drug in the movie: Substance D. LSD experiments like the following: Here is the article about these experiments. Big Brother/Corporate Conspiracy Small conspiracies vs grand conspiracies. Big brother. Alex Jones and Linklater. Govt agencies compelling sharing by private firms. The social effects of being watched. The war on drugs. Fractured Indentity Scramble suits. How much can trust our own senses? Occam’s razor.
