BBB of the Tri-Counties Podcast, Your Moment of Trust: Welcome to this week's edition of Your Moment of Trust! The 2022 holiday shopping season promises to be an unpredictable one. High inflation rates and increased prices of consumer goods are already throwing a wrench into holiday shopping. Electronics, toys, and other products will be (or already are) in short supply, and retailers are struggling to staff up as the shopping season nears. Just like in 2021, people are planning to start their holiday shopping early. Watch out for deals well before Black Friday sales. Retailers are also expecting to see even more people shopping online. Product shortages and increased online shopping are likely to result in even more online purchase scams this year. These scams accounted for nearly 40% of all scams reported to BBB Scam Tracker in 2021, according to the 2021 BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report. Shortages are likely to make purchase scams even more common as desperate shoppers turn to shadywebsites in hopes of finding this year's must-have gift. In this episode, BBB recommends the following tips to “Shop Safe, Shop Smart” this holiday season: A BIG thank you to Ayers Automotive Repair in Santa Barbara for Sponsoring this Podcast.

In this podcast, we discuss health insurance options and how to shop for coverage. What are my options for getting health insurance? You might have access to a group health plan at work or from a union, association, or church. You can also buy an individual health plan directly from an insurance company or licensed agent. You also might be able to get coverage from Medicare or Medicaid. When can I buy a plan through the Affordable Care Act? Normally you have to enroll in late fall. But due to the pandemic, federal officials created special open enrollment period for everyone, which runs through August 15, 2021. Do you need special documentation to qualify for an ACA plan? Normally you have to prove that you moved, got married, had a baby, or lost a job. But right now you don't have to prove any of that. You can select a plan at www.healthcare.gov. Can you get help paying for this coverage? Yes, if you purchase coverage through www.healthcare.gov, there are subsidies that can help with coverage, just like in the normal enrollment period. If you buy a plan, when does coverage start? You will be covered starting on the first of the month after you choose your plan and get all your paperwork done. How do you know if you're getting the right plan? If you see a certain specialist or doctor, and you don't want to change, you need to make sure they are in the plan you choose. If you have certain medicines that you take, you'll want to get a plan that covers them. What will my plan cost? There's a wide array of costs. The premium is what you pay every month for that plan. You also need to know how you'll pay for the deductible, copays, and coinsurance. How can you avoid health insurance scams? An agent or company selling a plan should be able to answer questions about it and know how it works inside and out. Look out for terms like “limited time offer.” You shouldn't have to rush. If you feel pressured, look elsewhere. See our health plan shopping guide: https://www.tdi.texas.gov/consumer/health-insurance-shopping-guide.html. It has a checklist that can help you decide on health coverage. Learn more about finding health insurance: https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/health-insurance-options.html

To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1085/29 Making the last payment on a car loan is cause for celebration. The only downside is its just about that time when your paid off vehicle starts needing expensive repairs. Are you doing what you can to minimize them? Spending a little time and money now can save you big time down the road, literally down the road. Our host Rob West has a checklist of ways to help you keep down auto repair costs. Liberty Mutual did a survey recently and found that the average two-car household spends just over 800-dollars a year on car repairs. The best way to cut repair costs is to prevent them from happening. You cant prevent all repairs that way parts do have a limited life span and they will break or fail but proper maintenance can certainly cut down on repair costs. If you purchase a new car it comes with a maintenance schedule that you must keep current for the warranty to stay in force. But you may not know that you can shop around for lower prices on maintenance procedures it doesnt have to be done at the dealer where you purchased the car. Most dealerships and independent repair shops are honest businesses. But it only takes a few bad apples to make people wary of mechanics in general. But thats changing with web sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor. Ask poeple at church where they have their repairs done. Odds are pretty good youll find a great shop with reasonable prices. Some of the routine maintenance items we need to take care of are oil changes, changing air filters (which is an easy DIY), and brakes. On todays program we also answer your questions: The majority of my assets are in stocks. With the projection of going into a recession, why does it not make sense to take everything out and buy it back once to economy comes back? We dont have any debt. Do you recommend investing in physical assets to be prepared for uncertain times? My husband and I were about to move into a senior community before the pandemic. We have not sold our home yet. Do you think we should wait a while to see if the housing market will pick back up? I have two properties, one is a rental. Should I sell the rental and move that money into my primary residence? The idea for Ask the Shopologist was created when Stephanie, a stay-at-home mom, wanted to be able to save money for the future without taking money out of the family budget. Once she learned the tricks for shopping smart and getting paid for what she was already doing for free, she decided to share her methods and tips with others. She started with fiat currency, and in the recent past has moved into cryptocurrency. Once she learned how to safely invest and grow money in cryptocurrency, Stephanie began to share that information with her followers as well. Their new program, Crypto Cardio, will teach people how to effectively use their crypto wallets to invest extra money without dipping into the family budget. Crypto Cardio is also offering a pre-paid Mastercard tied to your cryptowallet, so that users can both use their cryptocurrency and build credit. Crypto Cardio will initially support Bitcoin and Ethereum, though they will eventually support more coins. Ask the Shopologist will be at the Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Blockchain Superconference in Dallas, Texas February 16-18, and will give conference attendees the first opportunity to join Crypto Cardio and get their very own card. Shirley quickly summarizes the New Resource, The Importance of Family Meals and Shop Smart at the Farmers Market. For the full written review see the New Resources collection.
August is ‘Kids Eat Right' Month With childhood obesity on the rise, making sure kids eat right and get plenty of exercise is vital. Parents and caregivers can play a big role in children's nutrition and health, teaching kids about healthy foods, being a good role model and making sure physical activity is incorporated into each day. August, which is Kids Eat Right Month, is a great time for families to focus on the importance of healthful eating and active lifestyles. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is encouraging families to take the following steps: Shop Smart. To encourage a healthy lifestyle, get your children involved in selecting the food that will appear at the breakfast, lunch or dinner table. Cook Healthy. Involve your child in the cutting, mixing and preparation of meals. They will learn about food and may even be enticed to try new foods they helped prepare. Eat Right. Sit down together as a family to enjoy a wonderful meal and the opportunity to share the day's experiences with one another. Research indicates that those families who eat together have a stronger bond, and children have higher self-confidence and perform better in school. Healthy Habits. You can help kids form great, healthy habits by setting a good example. Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables, choose lower-sodium options, and make at least half the grains your family eats whole grains. For beverages, choose water over sugary drinks, and opt for fat-free or low-fat milk. Get Moving. Aside from being a great way to spend time together, regular physical activity is vital to strengthen muscle and bones, promote a healthy body weight, support learning, develop social skills and build self-esteem. Kids are encouraged to be active for 60 minutes per day. Getting kids to eat right can sometimes be a challenge, particularly if they are picky eaters. But experts say that a conversation can help. “Talk to your children. Learn the foods they like. Teach them about the foods they need for their growing bodies. Find ways together to make sure they have the knowledge and ability to eat healthy and tasty foods at every meal,” says Angela Lemond, registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson. It may help to consult a registered dietitian nutritionist in your area to ensure your family is getting the nutrients it needs with a meal plan tailored to your lifestyle and busy schedule. For more healthful eating tips, recipes, videos and to learn more about Kids Eat Right Month, visit www.KidsEatRight.org. This August, reevaluate your family's eating and exercise habits, and take steps to make positive, healthful changes.
