Choose Forgiveness With Tomara Moss!   Tomara Moss is a surviver and an incredible example of resilience!  The first time I hear her story I was in tears and new that I needed to have her story on the podcast.  She is a paraplegic motivational speaker, resilience expert, domestic violence survivor, former homeless child, an NCAA wheel chair basketball champion, and educator!  This conversation is a story of choosing forgiveness and the higher path no matter what.  More info about Tomara Moss:  Tomara has been living to beat the odds since birth. Homeless before 2 months old in foster care before 3 months and paralyzed by the hands of her father before 1 years old and fighting for her life thereafter. Tomara has been the ultimate underdog, the fiercest fighter and an expert in the field of resilience. Tomara believes when there is no one there is someone and you can still overcome. Tomara is currently a Special Education Teacher in Tucson AZ, born and raised in New York City. After her mother abandoned her and her father was sent to prison, she would soon realize she was on her own as her foster/adopted mother wasn't very kind to her. At the age of 9 she began planning for her future. She went on to earn her associates in Early Childhood at SUNY Cobleskill, Bachelors in Elementary Education/Psychology at the College of Saint Rose and her Masters in Special Education and behavior disorders at the University of Arizona where she also played wheelchair basketball and won 2 championships. The majority of her teaching has been to students with Learning disabilities, Emotional Disorder, ADHD and or Autism. Tomara teaches students strategic resiliency as a long term solution not a short term fix. She will work to help them understand a 5 step process to being able to drive the ship when the waters and winds are against you. Tomara will provide you with tools that you can place in your tool box that will help you be a star in your space in the universe.   I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it!  Tomara's story is one that everyone needs to hear! I am filled with gratitude for my life from listening to her example!  Thank you for listening!  Jake Ballentine  Mountain Top Motivation  See you at the top!

Some additional funding to help this effort out is coming from Erie County, legislator John Mills, and if all goes as planned, the marina will be open between May 16-18, 2022. The NYSCC Spring Meeting was held April 9, 2022 at SUNY Cobleskill, and was well attended, both in person and virtually. DEC brought a lot of information from most of their fish and wildlife personnel, starting with Steve Hurst from DEC Fisheries, providing news that happened over the past year, and plans coming up this year, which should keep this unit busy. Wildlife reports followed, with Big Game Biologist Jeremy Hurst providing updates to the bear harvest, while letting all know that the 2021 deer harvest still is not complete, but should be soon, after some challenges with updating the scripts and algorithms to account for reporting compliance variances from year to year didn't go as smooth as hoped. Moose numbers, too, were discussed as well as the big talk that was the success of the youth pilot lowering the deer hunting age to 12 with a firearm. Updates to the EHD outbreak were also given. Small game program leader Mike Shiavone provided some great insight into wild turkey, and the challenges presented to turkey chicks from West Nile Virus, while grouse don't seem to be impacted as much, with that being thought to be du to higher elevations they occupy, and lower temperatures which do effect mosquitoes. Discussions on the recent outbreak of avian influenza were also brought to the NYSCC. After the DEC portion, the NYSCC conducted their spring business, which included a heavy dose of discussions on the lead ammunition ban and the opt out legislation and proposed regulations. In response, after the committee reports, the boy deliberated the emergency resolution submitted by the Erie County Federation, with Chautauqua, Onondaga and Wyoming counties signing on. Time was the emergency, and the NYSCC took up this resolution immediately, voting unanimously in favor of the resolution, and adopting it as policy. Finally, it appears wind developer ESI Energy has been ordered to pay significant fines after disclosing many of their wind factories have combined to kill over 150 bald and golden eagles, despite never applying for an eagle "take" permit. This one is just the latest in a long line of problems that beset this industry which brings no public benefit, as no reliable energy is delivered for the high cost in money, ecosystem damage and dead wildlife. And finally, Pertnear Outdoors has organized a raffle in support of SWA initiative to install life ring safety statins along the upper Niagara River. Tickets cost just $20.00 and the luck winner will win a six hour walleye charter with Ultimate Adventure Sportfishing out of Sunset Bay, NY, for up to four anglers. Drawing will be on July 10 at the Southtowns Walleye Derby Awards Picnic. Bill Harvey, host of Pertnear Outdoors Log Talk Outdoors Podcast, heard about this effort here, and decided to help out! In Part II of our fabulous four-part series we're producing in collaboration with and supported by PelotonU, called Designing Postsecondary Alternatives for Rural Learners, Michelle discusses decisions rural learners have to make to pursue their educational goals and why and how rural learners choose whether to stay in their communities or leave to pursue education opportunities elsewhere, with three excellent guests: Dr. Marion Terenzio, president of the SUNY College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill; James Decker, who is serving his second term as mayor of his hometown, Stamford, Texas; and Miriam Hoffman, who is studying agribusiness economics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Terenzio says it's important to understand that the community helps shape a university's agenda with its learners. Her university's initiative, based on a Thriving College, Thriving Community mindset, helps create regional economic development. The Institute for Rural Vitality at SUNY Cobleskill, with its five Centers, including its important Ag Innovation Center, is having a positive impact on this economic development, which complements the university's community partnership goals and its superb applied learning capabilities. Decker discusses why he decided to return to his community after college and how leaders can encourage rural residents to return to their communities and help deal with rural community “brain drain.” Hoffman discusses how her college peers perceive her hometown and how it influenced her perception of the value of returning to a rural setting. This episode and the entire four-part series is sponsored by PelotonU, whose innovative and regionally accredited degree options flip the script on higher education and allow learners to fit college around their lives rather than fitting their lives around college. Learners can try it for six weeks risk-free with no money down. Visit PelotonU.org to get started.

When you see a fellow human with a problem, are you a superhero or a lighthouse? On this episode of Words and Voices I’m speaking with Pastor Carl Shepard as we dive into the delicate art of helping others through guidance and support. During our conversation Pastor Carl shares his experiences being a first responder to natural disasters and how he helps other make decisions between what can and cannot be saved. Carl was born and raised in the Adirondack mountains of northern New York in the US. He graduated as valedictorian from Johnsburg Central and went on to the University at Albany for a BS and MS in science teaching with a physics major, then later attained a second MS and PhD in physics. Most of his research had to do with trying to make better computer chips using copper. Carl taught high school for 14 years at Newcomb Central in the high peaks region of the Adirondacks, one of the smallest K-12 schools in NY state. He then taught at SUNY Cobleskill and moved into administration over a period of over 20 years. Retiring from education at age 55, Carl became a licensed local pastor in the United Methodist Church, serving four different small churches over a period of 14 years. Carl was at one time an avid tennis player but now is an avid golfer. He also has always been a singer lending his bass voice to many church and community choirs, a barbershop chorus, and a gospel quartet. He has been married to Johanne for 50 years and has two grown sons and sons-in-law. A true test of resiliency is to do the right thing when no one is watching. On this episode of Words and Voices I’m continuing my conversation with Pastor Carl Shepard as we discuss ethics and moral code as a base of religion and how navigating differing interpretations of scripture often closes the church off from the rest of the community. Pastor Carl also tell us why humans are built for survival and how we can utilize new opportunities to help others. Chris began his career in the Turfgrass Science industry when he was seventeen years old. He was hired as help for a Summer at Woodway Country Club in Darien, CT. While he was primarily looking forward to fresh air and sun while working, he became fascinated with the extensive science that was behind the maintenance of grass at such a high level. He had been mowing his home lawn since he was twelve, but had never realized just how much there was to it. Chris enrolled at Penn State University based on the stellar reputation of their Turfgrass Science program. While there, he spent Summers working in Turfgrass Pathology research, and at a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in the Pittsburgh, PA area. In 1994 he received a B.S. Degree in Turfgrass Science and returned home to Connecticut as the Assistant Superintendent of Rockrimmon Country Club in Stamford. Though he had been working aggressively toward a career in Golf Course Maintenance, his own aspirations gradually shifted toward business ownership. Though he tried to stay the course he had set, entrepreneurial instincts took over and he quickly grew to dislike the daily grind of the golf course business. He left Rockrimmon to re-plan his career and soon met Peter Teed, who had been working for a local lawn care company as a manager and salesman. The two hit it off quickly and realized that they complemented each other well. In September, 1995 they incorporated their business as “GrassRoots Lawn Care, Inc.” The name was changed to Teed & Brown in August, 2004. In addition to holding a Bachelors Degree in Turfgrass Science, Chris is a Certified Lawn Care Manager. He has appeared as a guest speaker at The University of Rhode Island, SUNY Cobleskill, Penn State University, The University of Connecticut, and at several professional conferences over the years. He has also appeared as a guest lawn care expert on Connecticut channel WTNH.

Wouldn't it be nice if the perfect piece of land just fell into our respective laps? I know I would love it. Since that kind of miracle doesn't happen every day we must resort to more conventional land-locating techniques. In today's farm podcast I highlight my strategy for finding land. Since my farm is currently very very wet, I will be looking for some dry pasture nearby where I can run some chickens until my pastures dry out. I will be applying these techniques myself in the weeks to come. They've worked in the past, they will again I'm sure. Since my farm is still very young I have found a number of websites that have been very helpful. Even with all the online "stuff" that you can do now-a-days. We're keeping an eye out. That being said, having my website up and running has made life a little easier for me. Find land can be a lot of fun. The trick is to not let it become stressful. You can listen to the episode to get all the tips and tricks Kip and I have to share. Right click here to download the MP3 In this farm podcast you will learn: How to think outside the box to maximize results Having a business plan is important when you find that perfect piece of land and you're talking to the customers. What a mentor can do for you My custom method for finding farm land Interview with Kip Kolesinskas Kip Kolesinskas joined American Farmland Trust in January 2012 as a consulting Conservation Scientist for the New England Office. Kolesinskas will spearhead conservation projects and identify opportunities for collaboration on conservation and farmland initiatives across the region. For 20 years, Kolesinskas served as USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service State Soil Scientist for Connecticut and Rhode Island, where he brought his scientific expertise and programmatic knowledge to numerous state, regional and national NRCS projects and initiatives. From 1995 to 2011, he managed the federal Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP) in Connecticut, which contributed $38.6 million to protect over 10,000 acres of farmland. At NRCS, Kolesinskas worked closely on several projects with American Farmland Trust and other partners, including theFarmland ConneCTionsproject, the Planning for Agriculture and Conservation Options guides, and the Working Lands AlliancePlowing Ahead conference and white paper. In addition to this wealth of professional experience, Kolesinskas  is an avid fisherman, cook, gardener and local foods advocate. Upon receiving an A.A.S. in Plant Science from SUNY Cobleskill, Kolesinskas received a B.S. in Soil Science from Cornell University and completed additional coursework at Texas A&M and Lancaster University and Schumacher College in the United Kingdom. This week on Food Talk with Mike Colameco, Mike sits down with two luminaries in the sustainable fish world- Sean Barrett of Dock to Dish, and Samantha Lee of Village Fishmonger NYC. Hear why Sean and Samantha joined the fight for sustainable fish, and what types of under-utilized seafood they feature with their fishery programs. How is Samantha kicking off Sustainable Seafood Week NYC? Later in the show, Mike chats with Adam Danforth. Few people know butchery better than Adam Danforth. Adam Danforth trained at the professional meat processing program at SUNY Cobleskill, one of the only such programs in the United States, before going to work at Marlow and Daughters in New York City. He’s also worked as a butcher at Blue Hill and has taught butchering workshops at the Stone Barns Center for Agriculture. Adam also works with individual farmers who are slaughtering animals for themselves, and because of that, he has a keen awareness of the needs of farmers, especially those who may be killing an animal for the first time. “We utilize all of the fish we catch, but for the general public, I think skate is one of the fish that people enjoy… it ends up everywhere… Squid is another under-utilized fish that is all over Montauk.” [6:15] “The market is flooded with imported fish!” [8:00] — Sean Barrett on Food Talk with Mike Colameco “Within meat, once I started to delve into it and looked at the full breadth of what it means to consume meat … breed history, species history, aspects of how they are raised, etc.” [30:00] “[My] books provide a number of different approaches for breakdowns of many different species of animal and various different techniques on how to utilize different muscles which is really an advent of modern understanding” [60:00] –Adam Danforth on Food Talk
