Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 342-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 21,212-points on turnover of $6.1-billion N-T. The market tumbled once again on Thursday as investors were spooked by a sharp decline in artificial intelligence development-related stocks on Wall Street overnight. The three major weighted stocks all slid on the main board. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing closed the day down 2.61-per cent, Hon Hai fell 4.11-per cent and MediaTek lost 3.04-per cent. Cat Owners Required to Register and Microchip their Moggies The Ministry of Agriculture says cat owners will be required to register and have microchips implanted (植入) in their pets by September of next year. The statement comes as amendments to the Animal Protection Act are set to take affect next month. The government has said the new regualtions are being brought into effect due to a sharp increase in the number of pet cats. That has risen by 50-per cent since 2020 and now stands at around 1.31-million. According to the agriculture ministry, cat owners will have a one-year grace period to comply with the new rules. They must register their pets with local government animal protection agencies. Those who fail to do so will be subject to penalties under the Animal Protection Act. Fines will range from between 3,000 to 15,000 N-T for cat owners who don't adhere to the new regualtions. Cat owners will also have to register the births or deaths of their pets. The demonstrators waved the rainbow flag, and chanted slogans (口號) as police officers guarded the rally. No violence was reported. Bulgaria's parliament on Wednesday approved the amendment introduced by a pro-Russian party and backed by some pro-European Union parties. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened down 248-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 21,047 on turnover of 5.9-billion N-T. The market recorded its largest closing gains in history on Wednesday - after surging nearly 800-points. The rise was led by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. This comes after its American depositary receipts spiked overnight as Wall Street staged a rebound. However, Wall Street fell overnight. Those losses weren't as bad as those that wracked (摧殘,折磨) markets worldwide earlier this week. But market watchers say the downturn in U-S indexes still spooked investors here in Taiwan. Environmental NGOs Form Coalition to Lobby New Climate Change Committee Environmental groups have announced the establishment of coalition to lobby the National Climate Change Response Committee. The coalition is being led by groups including the Taiwan Renewable Energy Alliance, the Wild at Heart Legal Defense Association, and the Taiwan Citizen Participation Association. According to those groups, the coalition has been formed due to concerns that industry might seek to obscure (遮蔽;使不分明) the government's climate policy. The National Climate Change Response Committee was formed in June by President Lai Ching-te and is holding its inaugural meeting today. Today's meeting is expected to focus on the impact of climate change on the world and Taiwan, and the challenge of Taiwan's power supply and demand. Mitch McCann reports: Bangladesh Interim Leader Appeals for Calm Bangladesh's incoming interim leader Muhammad Yunus has appealed for calm and urged all parties to help the country rebuild. This comes after weeks of violence that killed hundreds of people and prompted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee (逃跑) to India. Yunus, a Nobel peace laureate, was in Paris for the Olympics when he was named interim leader following talks among military officials and student activists who led the uprising against a prime minister seen as increasingly autocratic. Yunus on Wednesday boarded a plane to return home. Bangladesh's military chief said that an interim government headed by Yunus would be sworn in Thursday night. The Supreme Court in its verdict (判決) ordered 93% of the government jobs to be called on a merit-based system, with only 5% reserved for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's war of independence in 1971 and other categories. Now that we are finally past Y Combinator's demo day — though our Friday show is worth listening if you haven't had a chance yet — we can dive into the latest news. So, this morning on Equity Monday we got into the chance that the United States might pass a real data privacy law. There's movement to report, but we're still very, very far from anything becoming law.Elsewhere, the U.S. and TSMC have a new deal, there's gaming news to consider (and a venture tie-in), and Spotify's latest AI plans, which I am sure will delight some and annoy others.Lastly, on the crypto front, trading volume of digital tokens seems to have partially arrested its free fall, which should help some exchanges breath a bit more easily.Equity is TechCrunch's flagship podcast and posts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and you can subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. You also can follow Equity on X and Threads, at @EquityPod.For the full interview transcript, for those who prefer reading over listening, read on, or check out our full archive of episodes over at Simplecast.
