Listen to 66 Future Now Podcast Trimtab Times ‘Twas a busy weekend for us, with back-to-back dinner parties, and a visit to Whiskey Hill Farms for a tour by David Blum, author of the best seller, “Alcohol Can Be a Gas.”  Besides his innovative alcohol distillary, his experimental farm is growing a number of unusual crops that could support small farmers, such as Wasabi, a plant with a high return for it’s rhizomes.  On the tour was none other than lawyer Daniel Sheehan, who was meeting David for the first time, thanks to a wonderful connector person, Jahn Ballard, from Sebastopol. In this show, we open with an update on the latest from Apple Computer (think M4), thanks to our Apple analyst,  Taylor Barcroft.  From there we delve into a new portable solar generator system by Solex, being installed for Taylor by “Free Energy Bob,” and a report from Gabrielle Cianfrani on “trimtab,” a valuable concept she learned from David Blum (and he from Bucky Fuller).   In Future News we look at Scarlett Johansen’s dispute with OpenAI on the use of her voice for their latest AI’s, we demo and create a tune with the AI music generator, Suno, and delve into the realm of agreements with Master Now, visiting from well, the bigger N:OW .. Up this week is Simon Holmes à Court, the Australian investor and philanthropist with a passion for using data to change the world. In 2022, the federal elections in Australia delivered an upset, as around a third of the electorate turned their back on the established parties and voted in seven new independent MPs taking the total to 10. Simon was responsible for a crowdfunding initiative - Climate 200 - that supported 23 candidates in all, pledging to act on climate, political integrity and gender discrimination. He remains very involved in the challenge of pivoting Australia from a fossil fuel based economy to a clean energy superpower. Simon is an energy analyst, clean-tech investor, climate philanthropist, and director of the Smart Energy Council and the Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network. He was co-founder of the Australian Wind Alliance and inaugural chair of the Melbourne Energy Institute's Advisory Board. He is a respected commentator on the economic, political and engineering aspects of Australia's energy transition.  Links: Simon's 2022 book The Big Teal: https://publishing.monash.edu/product/the-big-teal/ Simon's ABC interview on the success of Climate 200 in the wake of the 2022 elections: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3Mhz6b7cg4 Simon's 2021 talk - Independents and Climate - The Hope to End the Lost Decade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN_-1eLbLL8 Simon's 2018 op-ed which triggered his expulsion from Kooyong 200: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/apr/09/why-liddell-is-likely-to-close-in-2022-and-why-you-shouldnt-careThe Superpower Institute, working for Australian leadership in the transition: https://www.superpowerinstitute.com.au/

To celebrate this milestone episode 150, we're joined by Simon Holmes à Court in a very rare public interview appearance, and we believe his first about his own story!Simon has stood at the intersection of community, climate action and politics since May 2007 when he began chairing the community cooperative that set out to build Australia's first community-owned wind farm. Fifteen years later to the month, at the May 2022 national federal election, one of this former Silicon Valley dot com engineer's startups, Climate 200, harnessed community, climate awareness and politics to play a major role in shaking up Australia's tired old political order. He is an energy analyst, clean-tech investor, climate philanthropist, director of the Smart Energy Council, The Superpower Institute and more. ***Episode guiding points:This conversation is truly wide ranging and covers a lot of ground. We discuss his upbringing in Perth, Australia with 3 siblings and his parents being on the road a lot, and his father's South African heritage. Simon reflects on his boarding school experience in Geelong, near Melbourne and how that was physically and emotionally character building. Hear about his aspirations at age 18: set up a computer parts company with a friend to upgrade memory in people's computers, Studying law but then loved the student organisation AIESEC and going down a different path. Our host, Vidit also was involved with AIESEC during my university studies and couldn't speak more highly of the training it gave me. Particular aspects of this conversation that stood out to us include:Simon and his wife left the US on sept 10th 2001 with their first child and moving back to Australia, and living in Melbourne (cautious after his boarding school scars)Simon's discovery of renewable energy during his 14 years scaling a company called Observant: Building remote monitoring technical solutions, and precision water management for farmers and their family cattle stations in the Northern Territory How leadership of the Hepburn Community Farm Project gave Simon exposure to everything from The capital raising, the media, the politics, the engineering side, the commercials of building environmental, on ground engagementThe fascinating story of The kids off naru project, the Sydney opera house and a horse race and Simon learning the power of Twitter through thisLearning clarity of communication and present information in a way that makes people engaged and willing to listen and not switch off?Two concepts that we haven't stopped thinking about since this conversation is one: First The trim Tab from Buckminster Fuller (listen in to hear this context, small things like a trim tab can drive large scale changes), and second the Henry David Thoreau quote “There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.”  So be a trim tab and a root striker. Thank you for your support of the 150 episodes to date, this has been the most impactful and enjoyable work our host Vidit Agarwal has done in his life, and is excited for what's ahead. Nature is an incredible source of inspiration for scientists and R&D experts, leading to the development of biomimicry: a new branch of science that seeks to imitate living things. Through biomimicry, researchers are able to develop new technologies by studying and imitating the designs created in nature by Allah. This approach has been applied in the world of technology, particularly in nanotechnology, robot technology, artificial intelligence, medicine, and the military. By drawing from these natural systems as models, humans are able to create more sustainable technologies than those in use today. Biomimicry has surprised scientists and revealed incomparable structures and systems that have the potential to enrich technology in a wide range of fields. Nature is a source of inspiration for scientists, and biomimicry is a way of using the extraordinary designs in living things in the service of humanity. Scientists are making important gains with regard to time and labor, and using less material resources by imitating nature. There are many scientific papers that discuss these topics, such as "Science is Imitating Nature," "Life's Lessons in Design," "Biomimicry: Secrets Hiding in Plain Sight," and more. In the 19th century, nature was only imitated aesthetically, but in the 20th century, scientists began studying natural mechanisms at the molecular level and learned from living things, as revealed in the Qur'an 1,400 years ago. Hypnosis is often seen as having therapeutic value, a way of overcoming problems caused by an ‘incorrect psyche.' Because of the layer of silence achieved inside a Vedic Meditation sitting, Vedic Meditation, we're frequently asked if it is actually a form of hypnosis. The short answer is no. Vedic Meditation is not hypnosis, but to understand the answer fully requires a closer look at what hypnosis is. Though hypnosis may be done with good intent, and may apparently have some ‘good' effects, and may appear to be beneficial, essentially it's a form of manipulation. So in that sense, hypnosis is in fact the opposite of Vedic Meditation. Vedic Meditation provides an opportunity to transcend the mind, to go beyond the small s self, the field where hypnosis has an impact, to the big “S” Self, where hypnosis has no impact whatsoever, and where the psyche can obtain benefits far beyond anything that hypnosis can deliver, and in perfect alignment with Nature.Listen to Thom explain this more fully, looking at the subject both from an individual perspective and also from the group perspective, explaining the impact of suggestibility and the role of Vedic Meditation in combating its effects. Episode Highlights:[00:00] - Is Vedic Meditation a Form of Hypnosis?[01:59] - Locus of Control[03:28] - A Construct of Exterior Influences[04:52] - The External Locus of Control at Play[04:58] - Field Dependency and a Narcissistic Approach to Life[07:49] - Internalized Locus of Control[08:58] - Who is a Control Freak?[10:41] - The Loving Controller[12:06] - The Element Of Suggestibility[13:45] - The Field-Independent Person[14:47] - Suggestibility and Influences of the Outside World[16:44] - Mass Suggestibility[18:32] - Being: The Fountainhead Of Creative Intelligence[20:28] - The Cause of the Evolutionary Process[22:11] - Hypnotizability and Suggestion[23:42] - Self-Hypnosis[24:56] - Changing Psyche On The Basis Of Suggestibility[26:24] - Suggestibility and Terrible Behaviors[28:07] - Hypnosis for Addiction[29:31] - The Inexperienced Gardener[30:41] - Fixing the Symptoms[31:42] - The Role of Vedic Meditation[32:42] - Experiencing The Inner Potentiality[34:43] - Becoming More Ideal Citizens[36:21] - Creating Social Change[38:18] - Buckminster Fuller and the Analogy of the Trim Tab[40:51] - The Consciousness-Spreader EffectUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoles/https://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoles https://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Everyday Legends

Everyday Legends

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2021 78:05

I am always learning many things, all the time - still learning. Some things I keep learning over and over - kind of implying I'm not bloody learning them at all. And then there are ones that I learn again and again but in a new way or on a new level, almost. One of those is this: man, as individuals and as a society we need the wisdom, experience, insight, and practises of elders; those people advanced in age (perhaps) but sage in themselves and experienced in those years. For the longest part of human history - up until the global expansion of the agricultural age on one new level and then the dawn of the industrial age on an all-new, and almost entirely eradicating new level, we were a species that lived in small tribal bands and communities where young, old, babies and elderly, couples and families lived in close quarters, everyone had a role, everyone had a purpose. One of the central roles to a healthy, functioning and mature - initiated -  society was the role of the elder; the people who could guide not only the youth, but those entering into marriage and parenthood and slowly taking over the majority of the responsibility of the community. Elders would initiate the young, pass on wisdom and knowledge, tell stories and share the lesson to life in myth and song, and cultural stories. They would sit with the young and facilitate respect, patience, grace, and humility. They were a crucial part of individuals growing into responsible adults, as well as the healthy functioning of the clan. Then BANG, we lose that, and widely present throughout most Western, and certainly European cultures, we don't have this. Instead, we have a generation of eldery, or ‘olders, perhaps. We have lost the respect and reverence for the wisdom in our older generation, instead, they have been taught to chase the solo life of retirement and end of life fulfilment, turning away from the role, while the rest of us happily shove them to the corner of our psyche and our society, into the care homes and minimum security prisons, as Jerry Seinfeld once called retirement homes. We have lost the role and importance of true elders unless individuals choose to follow that path. They exist, but it's not really a self-appointed tag. As one elder I admire and follow, Francis Weller, says: “Eldership comes about when the youth come for something” - because this is something have been pondering - ‘ how do we create more elders when they are limited, we just have old people and they never had elders bringing them through and showing them the way? And now I get it - we, the ‘youth' create this by going to those people and asking for something; guidance, support, wisdom, insight, initiation. In this Episode: This was evident to me in meeting and chatting in this episode with today's guest, John Moulang. I'm not entirely sure if john would agree with my summation here, but we do get into it in this episode. As we do his own story in parts. While he has quite the introduction in being captured, poisoned, raped, and even being in a coma, we don't spend too much time in those stories. After all, in one short podcast, episode, while it might be entertaining to hear those stories, we are here to learn some insight from him, and as John so wisely put it, not everyone gets access to your full story until they earn the right. That's what sitting with elders can do; impart little gems like this while also earning the right to the deeper stories and lessons. We also discuss elements of the shadow and men's work that john has been heavily influential in over the years. I suspect I personally will have many more conversations with John over the years, and perhaps record one or two so that we can learn from him and other elders like him (just don't expect him to call himself an elder, as I won't call myself a ‘legend' - just make a podcast with that title as something to strive a life towards ;-) )   As always, if you have questions about it - ask me. All Selling Aside with Alex Mandossian |

Have you ever heard of the Domino Effect? Gary Keller and Jay Papasan discuss this effect in their book The ONE Thing. Linked to the Domino Effect is the 1st Domino Principle. On November 13th, 2009, in the Netherlands, 4,491,863 dominos were lined up and toppled down with just one flick of the finger. This made the Guinness Book of World Records for the greatest sequential domino fall in history. The first domino toppling into the next resulted in 94,000 joules of energy being expended over the course of the line, which equals 545 pushups by the average human. The effect that first domino had on the whole line of dominos was truly astounding. Over 25 years prior to this event, Lorne Whitehead wrote a piece in the American Journal of Physics that he’d discovered that a domino can topple dominos 50% larger than themselves.  Using Whitehead’s research, if the 1st domino is 1” in height, the 10th domino would be the size of a 6’ tall man. The 18th would be the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The 23rd would be taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The 57ths would bridge the distance between the Earth and the moon.  But how does this apply to business growth and sales? Listen in to learn how understanding the lineage of your 1st domino results in building sequentially, over time a business the size of the 57th domino. Hold onto your patience and confidence as you learn the three key insights for this episode, which are:  What is the “1st Domino Principle” and why does it impact permanent change? How to uncover the 1st Domino in 4 fundamental aspects in your life. What if the 1st Domino revealed the three words on your gravestone? What would they be?  Who is your trim tab? Who is your first domino? How will that first domino impact your last? Things to think about as you review this episode and the insights you learned.  In This Episode:  [04:17] - Alex shares the three key insights for this episode. Spiritually who had the most impact on you? [17:37] - Alex shares the dominos in the mental aspect of his life. [19:02] - Why Buckminster Fuller was Alex’s first domino for thinking. [20:10] - How does your first domino impact your final domino - your epitaph?  [22:08] - What is a TRIM TAB and what does it have to do with sales?  [25:09] - The Alexism is, “Entrepreneurial success is defined by two words: Delayed Gratification.” [26:27] - Hear the quick recap for the three key insights of this episode:  What is the “1st Domino Principle” and why does it impact permanent change? "If struggling were the way, we'd all be there by now." Victoria Castle reveals for us a deep root of one of the main causes of difficulty in our lives as individuals and a society. It is deceptively simple to understand cognitively, but a true master key in changing our lives and our happiness for the better. She makes very clear the difference between facts/reality and the stories, interpretations, perspectives, lenses, and assumptions we bring to those circumstances. She shares warmth, clarity, and humor in describing a phenomenon that easily goes unnoticed -- the Trance of Scarcity. The Trance of Scarcity is the prevailing norm in how we see the world in terms of survival, struggle, stress--that there isn't enough, we aren't good enough, that we don't have enough. It has become so commonplace to our way of thinking that we rarely challenge those thoughts and stories. Our immensely enjoyable and insightful conversation touches on the following: The limitations of struggle The simplicity of using breathing consciously and centering to make positive change moment-to-moment The power of daily practices to come from our best selves How the stories I am not good enough, competent enough, wealthy enough, beautiful enough, smart enough, old or young enough, "I am only lovable if…"etc—how that is a story, an interpretation, an assessment, a lens on reality which produces our experience The surprising downside of thinking in terms of right/wrong or good/bad instead of what is practical and useful in terms of our higher aims The power we have in what we think to align with greater possibility, without devolving into affirmations or positive thinking How struggling and striving externally won’t fix the things that feel off inside us Pitfalls once we see scarcity of measuring ourselves by perfection Life-changing power of gratitude The Trim Tab insight: Finding the best leverage points for change And more Thanks as always for listening and for doing your thing in the world.

Happy 4th of July! One of the newest and coolest breweries in Birmingham, Trim Tab, stopped by today. Well, OK, he didn't physically stop by, but Trim Tab owner Harris Stewart was on the line. A former law student at the University of Alabama, Stewart soon realized that he was having a lot more fun home brewing than learning about being a barrister. So he and his wife set up shop in Birmingham.  We talk about the inspiration behind "Trim Tab" (hint: Buckminster Fuller had something to do with it), and the importance of craft beer / breweries in creating a community.  Plus, Mike O'Sullivan of Taproom Press stopped by to talk Georgia beer, and friend of the show Brian Hewitt came by with some of the beers he grabbed on a recent trip to Oregon.

Come on into the Eaglerock Portable Studio as Captain Rob and Tina record there first podcast together in over two years.  Our lives continue to be busy and in an effort to start producing podcasts again, we recorded this at the kitchen table with a portable podcasting setup.  A little degradation in the recording quality is in order so that we can record more often.  Also our regular studio hasn't been put back together so we hope you don't mind the recording.  We learned a few things that we can do to improve the next portable recording of our next epidsode in the next couple of weeks.   We are joined by our 16 year old son who we think previous listeners will remember as Trim Tab.  We talk  a little about what has been going on and then get right into listener feedback.  This episode also serves as an opportunity for Captain Rob and Tina to get there feet wet again at podcasting.  We appreciate your patience with us.   For those folks interested in the ground lesson Captin Rob gives Tina and their son, be sure to listen to the Lessons Feed.  That episode is the same as this one but we continue recording into a lesson after the 41 minute mark.   It is good to be back and we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it.   Please contact us and give us your feed back at:   email: learningtoflytogether at gmail.com Voicemail: 206-337-6300 Twitter: captain_rob Skype: learningtoflytogether   Intro song is "Learning to Fly" by Josh Woodward. Outgo song is "Set to Fly" by Elisa Peimer Both available at the Podsafe Music Network
