Lots of people dream about leaving it all behind, but Maurice and Maralyn Bailey really did it. They bought a boat and set sail in June of 1972.

Before Marilyn, before Madonna, before the femme fatales of noir, there was Theda Bara—the original “Vamp” of the silver screen. In this episode, we explore the life of the woman who seduced audiences in the silent film era, becoming one of cinema's first true icons. From her carefully crafted mystique and exotic public persona to her trailblazing roles that challenged early 20th-century norms of femininity and sexuality, Theda Bara's influence on Hollywood was as bold as it was fleeting. Though most of her films have been lost to time, her impact on culture and stardom lives on. We'll uncover how a young woman from Cincinnati reinvented herself into a legendary figure of desire, scandal, and power—and why her story is still worth remembering today. On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced Executive Order 9066, which authorized the confinement of tens of thousands of Japanese and Japanese-Americans living in the Western U.S., sending them to cramped, hastily-constructed camps like Manzanar and Amache. One such Japanese-American was Karl Yoneda, a well-known labor activist–and the husband of Elaine Yoneda, a Jewish-American woman. Howard Penrose, President of Motordoc LLC, returns to discuss the complexities of modern electrical grids. The conversation covers the inaccuracies surrounding the Iberian Peninsula blackout, the intricate functions of voltage and frequency control, and systemic issues in grid management. Penrose explains how renewable energy sources like wind and solar, alongside energy storage, play crucial roles in stabilizing the grid. This is the Progress Powering tomorrow. Howard, welcome back to the show. How are you doing? It's been a bit, a lot has happened since we last spoke. I, I wanna speak about the Iberian Peninsula problem and the blackout that happened in April. Because there's been a number of inaccuracies about that situation, and you're actively involved in the groups that look into these situations and try to understand what the root cause was. That the, the, the Iberian situation is a little complicated. The CNN knowledge, the Fox News knowledge is that solar was the cause of a problem. Yeah, that is far from the truth. You wanna explain kind of [00:01:00] what this, how it progressed over time? It started around noontime Spain and they had a couple of wobbles there. You want to kick it off? Howard Penrose: Yeah. First, first my comment is, I like how journalists become experts in, in literally everything, um, from 30 seconds to 30 seconds, right. Basically. The problem had been going on for a little while and, and the grided there had been operating much like it had been for a little while. And, uh, you know, for years actually, uh, even with the application of alternative energy, we'll, we'll call it alternative energy for this, um, you know, so that we don't bring in that political end of calling it one thing or the other. Alternative energy is what we called it in the 1990s. So, um, in any case. Uh, they had a number of issues with voltage control, meaning large loads would suddenly drop off and then the voltage would float up [00:02:00] and then, uh, and then they would have to do something to bring it under control. They're at 50 hertz, so their voltage is 400 kv. That's their primary grid voltage. They have an alarm trip voltage, meaning an emergency trip voltage, where they strip the line at 435 kv. So, um, what happened now, the final event happened in 27 seconds, but leading up to that, they had an event where they had voltage float up. And they were bringing that under control. And then down in the southern part of Spain, and we don't have anything set up like this here in the states, luckily they had all, uh, a whole group of, um, solar uh, plants as well as a gas turbine plant feeding a single distribution transformer. And the, uh, auto taps on that failed on the low voltage side on step up. So it basically dropped out. So, uh, something like, I, I'm trying to remember off the top of my, my head, [00:03:00] but it was either 300 or 800 megawatts just offline now. It was a lightly loaded day in Spain 'cause it was a beautiful day outside. Uh, so that makes matters worse. It makes it unstable and really easy for voltage to flow up where people start to think that that, uh, alternative energy was a fault was because we were at 40%. Of the power supply was solar as the morning progressed, so it had climbed up to about that there was a good percentage of wind. Um, but they had a nuclear power power plant online and several others providing synchronous protection for any type of in...
Grace Van Patten has one word to describe having the opportunity to portray Amanda Knox in Hulu's The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox—grateful. “I was really, really grateful to be a part of something that was giving Amanda a chance to reclaim her story,” she told Newsweek's H. Alan Scott. To capture Knox's mindset, Van Patten leaned into the confusion of the case itself. “Playing the confusion was truthful. I was so confused by what happened when I was learning about it that it was very easy to be present in those moments.” The role also showed her the impact of public perception. “I learned a lot about how easy it is for women, but all people, to be so easily scrutinized and villainized in the press.” Partly because there's money in the shock value. “It sells. It's so much about money. And we're all guilty of buying into it because it's enticing, and it's in big font. It taught me a lot to work harder on not buying into that type of thing.” Ultimately, she is eager to see if the series can shift long-held beliefs. “I'm really curious to see if it does change their opinion at the end of it.” You can watch the full chat at https://www.newsweek.com/2025/09/12/grace-van-patten-reclaiming-amanda-knoxs-true-story-hulu-2119585.html Subscribe to my newsletter: https://www.newsweek.com/newsletter/the-culture/ Follow me: https://linktr.ee/halanscott Subscribe to Newsweek's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/newsweek See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On a crisp fall morning in 2007, a small airplane took flight over the forested town of Graham, Washington. The pilot was a detective with the Pierce county sheriff's department, and he was flying a somewhat unusual mission. He wasn't looking for a lost person, or chasing a fleeing suspect. Instead, he was circling the sky above the scene of a double-murder case that had him – and his whole department – stumped. The detective had run out of ideas on the ground. So he'd decided to take flight. He always thought better in the air – and he figured he would literally get a new perspective on his evidence this way. He circled over the house where the homicides took place. And that's when he noticed something – from the sky, it became obvious in a way that he never considered from the ground. With a rush of adrenaline, he turned his plane back toward the airfield. He had a hunch – and if he was right, he'd just cracked the case. Bill gives Barbara an OnlyFans crash course she never asked for, and Barbara tells Vegas war stories with George Burns and Shecky Greene, including the wildest “show must go on” tale you've ever heard. On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast, we present an episode of the Hank Unplugged podcast. Hank's guest is philosopher Paul Gould, author of A Good and True Story: Eleven Clues to Understanding Our Universe and Your Place in It. Hank and Paul discuss why Paul wrote A Good and True Story, if we live our lives according to a story, how evidence for God is everywhere but needs to be rightly interpreted, the non-religious stories that explain our existence: scientism, materialism, atheism, nihilism, and reductionism; the origins of the universe, and if the immensity of the universe should inspire belief in God.

In 1953, dogs and livestock in Bladenboro, North Carolina began turning up dead with their skulls crushed flat and their bodies completely drained of blood, while witnesses reported seeing a massive cat-like creature that made sounds like a woman screaming. Over 70 years later, similar attacks still occur in the area, and despite massive hunts involving over a thousand people, no one has ever caught or identified what's killing these animals.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateTake the WEIRD DARKNESS LISTENER SURVEY and help mold the future of the podcast: https://weirddarkness.com/surveyIN THIS EPISODE: Every part of the world seems to have its own share of cryptids – and sometimes, creatures that are unique to that area. For example, along with the ubiquitous Bigfoot, you might have heard about North Carolina's “Moon-Eyed People”, or “The Wampus Cat”. But I'm guessing you've not heard about what some call “The Vampire Beast” of Bladenboro. (The Beast of Bladenboro) *** The story of Isabella Guzman went viral on TikTok six years after she was convicted of the murder of her mother. During the trial she claimed she was abused… then she pleaded insanity. But one good thing did come from the trial… a serious discussion about mental illness. (Isabella Guzman: The Viral Teenage Killer) *** If you're a proponent of execution – no judgement here, just go with me – the only way to see that through is to have someone push the button, flip the switch, pull the trigger, or whatever method is being used in order to snuff out the life of the soon-to-be-dead inmate. Someone has to get their hands dirty, metaphorically speaking. And even if you think you'd have the stomach and determination to do the job – let me ask you this. Would you be okay with literally getting your hands bloody? Would you survive as a Medieval executioner, using an axe to chop off your victims heads? What would life be like with that job? (Life As a Medieval Executioner) *** We've all heard of cryptids like Bigfoot, Mothman, the Loch Ness Monster, the Jersey Devil, the Dogman, and so on. In the seas off Madagascar, Nova Scotia and even Connecticut, the siren call of buried riches has lured treasure hunters and adventurers over many a century. Many seek the wealth Capt. Kidd accrued during years of pirating and then had to hide when his arrest was imminent. In popular lore, Capt. Kidd's name is synonymous with the fearsome, ruthless privateers of the pirate age. But the truth about William Kidd is more nuanced — and interesting. Historian Samuel Marquis, who is also William Kidd's ninth great-grandson, writes in his new biography of Kidd: Though the real Capt. Kidd would have loathed being labeled as one of the most notorious villains of all time, he would have delighted at being a continuing hot topic of conversation for over 300 years and counting.Marquis' previous books include “Blackbeard: The Birth of America.” His new book is “Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal,” and he joins Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas to sort reality from the scuttlebutt when it comes to the age of pirates.Guest:Samuel Marquis is a historian and author. Eleanor of Aquitaine was no ordinary queen—she was one of the most powerful and influential women of the Middle Ages. Born into immense wealth and power, she became Duchess of Aquitaine in her own right, then twice a queen—first of France and later of England. Her life reads like a medieval epic: she led armies on crusade, was a patron of the arts who helped shape the courtly love tradition, and maneuvered through dangerous political rivalries that defined Europe for centuries. In this episode, we dive into Eleanor's extraordinary journey—from her bold spirit as a young duchess to her role as a mother of kings, including Richard the Lionheart and John. We'll explore her political genius, her resilience through imprisonment, and her lasting legacy as a trailblazer who challenged the limits placed on women in her time. Over a span of 39 years, twenty-three aliases, twenty-eight arrests in twenty cities, and a dozen imprisonments, Robert Spears had lived a con artists' life of unparalleled adventure and intrigue. This is his story.Shortly before Thanksgiving Day in 1959, a plane exploded in mid-air, killing all forty-two passengers and crew and leaving scattered debris and bodies across the otherwise tranquil Gulf waters. Listed on the manifest was Dr. Robert Spears—once the highly regarded president of the Texas Naturopathic Association.Father of two small children with a lovely, society-minded wife and an elegant home in an exclusive neighborhood, it was a monumental tragedy for them, as it was for all the souls lost that day. Less than two months later, Robert Spears miraculously “rose from the dead” in Phoenix where he was promptly arrested. Headlining newspapers nationwide— “Man Downs Airliner to Fake Death”—Spears was discovered to have cleverly switched identities, persuaded his friend, Al Taylor, to fly with his plane ticket, asked him to carry “a package” on board and drove away in his friend's car with his wallet and driver's license. As the FBI began to investigate, they uncovered a stunning, mind-bending tale of murder, abortion rings, and false identities—more than twenty-five aliases for Spears alone—as well as insurance frauds and investment frauds that stretched over decades. But that was far from the end of the story. Methodically and carefully researched for years and meticulously sourced by a research sociologist and author, Vanishing Act is one of the great true crimes. He is the author of Vanishing Act: A Crashed Airliner, Faked Death, and Backroom Abortions. https://jerryjamison.com/http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

Picture this: It's the 1960s, your Welsh hometown is dying, and everyone's telling you to accept reality and move to London. Instead, you read about American libraries closing down and think, "You know what? Opportunity." So you buy crates of abandoned books, ship them to Wales, open a bookshop in an old fire station, purchase a medieval castle, and turn it into a 24-hour honor-system bookstore. Then, for your next trick, you declare your town an independent kingdom and crown yourself monarch. The media goes insane, tourism explodes, and suddenly your "joke" has spawned dozens of copycat book towns worldwide and an international literary festival that attracts more visitors than your entire town's population. Meet Richard Booth, the Oxford-educated madman who proved that sometimes the most ridiculous ideas are also the most brilliant. This is the story of Hay-on-Wye: the town that books built, the kingdom that never was but somehow still exists, and the beautiful audacity of believing that literature can literally save the world—one used paperback at a time.GET A BOOK ABOUT IT HERE: To support independent book shops use this link.Or to just use Amazon use this link.BECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! In September of 2021, a young woman named Anna Moriah Willson – who everybody just called “Mo” – stood in front of a cheering crowd at the end of a long outdoor bike path in Idaho. Mo had just finished a grueling gravel race, which is a cycling race on difficult terrain. And it was clear to everyone in the crowd who was cheering that not only was Mo one of the best women cyclists in the country – she was quickly becoming the face of the sport. Like all the competitors, Mo was a highly-trained athlete and in peak physical condition. But that brute athleticism was offset by a bright smile, her long auburn hair, and a true love for talking to anybody and everybody. It was this combination of her athletic skill, outgoing personality, and her natural comfort in front of cameras and on social media that made her the perfect ambassador for the growing sport of gravel racing. And there was one particular person at the race in Idaho who just couldn't take his eyes off her. He was already one of the most famous male gravel racers in the world, and as he made his way through the crowd to meet her, Mo's face lit up, and she could feel her heart racing a little. Before long, the two top riders were introducing themselves to each other and having some nice small talk… not realizing the horrible chain of events this encounter would spark. For 100s more stories like these, check out our main YouTube channel just called "MrBallen" -- https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallenIf you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @mrballenSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Dr. Phil talks with Michelle Dowd, who escaped an apocalyptic survivalist cult, on her journey from control and isolation to resilience, critical thinking, and freedom. Raised in an apocalyptic survivalist cult known as “the field,” Michelle Dowd's childhood was defined by isolation, strict doctrine, and rigorous survival training. In this powerful conversation with Dr. Phil, Michelle shares how she learned to forage, endure harsh conditions, and navigate life under the control of her grandfather, the self-proclaimed prophet preparing for Armageddon. She opens up about the emotional cost of being separated from her parents, the contradictions that sparked her critical thinking, and the secret journaling that became her lifeline. Now an author and educator, Michelle reflects on how her survival skills extend beyond the wilderness into navigating modern life, challenging beliefs, and empowering the next generation to think critically. On the afternoon of March 24, 2006, an employee at a moving truck rental company in Ohio opened his desk drawer and grabbed a wad of cash. It had been a slow day, so the employee was using his downtime to organize a few recent payments. The money he'd just grabbed was from an all-cash deal that had happened a few days ago. At the time, the employee had been super busy, so he'd just taken the cash from the customer, flipped through it quickly to make sure the amount seemed right, then shoved the money in the drawer to deal with later. Now, he was actually counting it properly – and he really hoped the customer hadn't shorted him, or he'd have to track them down to collect. But as the employee counted the bills, he paused. Not because the amount wasn't right – but because there was something on the money that caught his attention. For a second, he wasn't sure what it was. So, he looked closer. And then, all at once, he understood what he was seeing. He stopped counting the money and started flipping through it as quickly as he could – and he kept seeing the same thing on almost all the bills. With his heart racing, the employee dropped the money, grabbed the phone, and called the police.
