Imagine accidentally being put off from a career in engineering by your brilliant grandfather who, without realising, made a career in the sector sound unreachable. Hepzi Rattray is a structural engineer with the global engineering company Ramboll, but for many years, she attempted to avoid following this career trajectory. In this penultimate podcast of 2024, we follow Hepzi's journey from school, where she turned down the offer of a top private school to attend Lady Margaret's, a church-state school in Parsons Green, West London. Some unexpected AS results forced something of a rethink and pointed her towards a somewhat unique engineering degree at Glasgow University.Even as Hepzi progressed through the course, she was still uncertain if this was the career for her. Her mind finally made up when she undertook a placement at Ramboll, and everything finally dropped into place. In this conversation, you will hear Hepzi's passion for her work, the strong relationship between engineering and her other passion, music, and why she is determined to use her position to inspire others into the profession. So pull up a chair, grab a drink and a mince pie (there must be one left), and enjoy Designed for Life in conversation with Structural Engineer Hepzi Rattray.  https://www.ramboll.com/Thanks as always go to The Edge Foundation for their unwavering support that makes this podcast possible.

News Flash is brought to you by our friends at IntelStor. If you want market intelligence that generates revenue, then book a demonstration of IntelStor at IntelStor. com. Danish engineering firm Ramboll has acquired K2 Management, a wind and solar energy consultancy. This move expands Rambl's global wind division to over 900 people across 20 countries, including a new presence in Vietnam, Thailand, and Portugal. The acquisition is part of Rambl's strategy to grow its wind business to over 1, 000 people by 2025, enhancing its ability to provide services across all stages of wind energy projects globally. Now, Phil. Why the push to get into places like Vietnam and Thailand and Portugal at the minute? Philip Totaro: Well, it's interesting because they're, K2 has done a really good job over the years of doing a lot of owners engineering services and other consultancy services around project development, particularly in these kind of emerging markets. So, you And Ramble historically has gotten a lot of feed contracts doing, some of the EPC basically scope of work and, and design work on Offshore sites the fact that they would fold K2 management's capabilities in with what they already have is, is going to provide the combined company the opportunity to get a wider scope of work from a lot of these, particularly a lot of these emerging markets where. In an emerging market, you want to turn key service provider. This gets them one step closer to, to doing that. Joel Saxum: Yeah, this, to me, this is a huge acquisition in the space. If you're in the offshore wind space or in the wind space in general, and we're just talking wind, not solar and everything else that both of these companies do two big players, you're joining up. So it, like Phil said, you're going to have a full suite of capabilities in a lot of parts of the world, because there's parts where K2 operates where Rambo doesn't, or where K2 has made inroads and Rambo hasn't. Allen Hall: In Germany, EEW Group has reorganized its business into three holding companies. Japanese firm Sumitomo Corporation has acquired a stake in one of these, EEW Offshore Wind Holding. This holding company focuses on the monopile business and associated mechanical engineering activities. This partnership aims to secure EEW's position as a global market leader in offshore wind foundations. And Phil, there's a lot of work happening in foundations at the minute and a lot of movement in the business world about that. Philip Totaro: Yeah, and, and for Sumitomo's benefit they have a lot of contracts to do, both foundations and to partner with other companies to do topsides on offshore substations in particular. So, like we just talked about with with Ramboll and K2 getting together. And having kind of complementary capabilities. This is a similar thing where Sumitomo obviously already has some presence in, in monopile fabrication, but EEW is without a doubt the,

Developing and maintaining resilient and secure data centers is a huge part of cybersecurity readiness. Spiros Liolis, Chief Technologist and Managing Consultant, EYP Mission Critical Facilities, Part of Ramboll, joins me to discuss the challenges and best practices of creating and maintaining state-of-the-art data centers. Topics covered include a) elements and attributes of resilient data centers, b) creating and maintaining a resilient and adaptive data center, and c) the different types of risks – geological, meteorological, and human – that must be considered when building and maintaining the data centers.Time Stamps00:02 -- Introduction00:49 -- Setting the Stage and Context for the Discussion01:54 -- Guest's Professional Highlights02:56 -- Overview of Data Center Resiliency05:41 -- Criticality of Data Centers 07:53 -- Key Elements of a Resilient Data Center12:06 -- Build Your Own or Co-locate15:00 -- Assessing the Effectiveness of a Data Center19:32 -- Significance of Simulated Exercises/Tabletop Exercises21:46 -- Importance of On-Site Visits23:56 -- Technical, Commercial and Operational Due Diligence26:17 -- Adaptive Design28:32 -- Data Center Facility Locations30:15 -- Best Practices & Final ThoughtsMemorable Spiros Liolis Quotes/Statements"Everything we do today, as professionals and as consumers, relies heavily on data centers.""There's a cloud of course, but nothing up there, 35,000 feet above the ground, is hosting servers. The cloud is practically data centers on Earth, right.""What do we mean by secure and resilient data centers? will refer to the ability of essential data center infrastructure to withstand and recover from disruptions and ensure their continued operations.""When we talk about potential threats, we need to think of them in terms of geological, meteorological, accidental, or even intentional risks. These are primarily the risk types we talk about when it comes to data center resiliency.""The moment you power up a data center, you practically cannot shut it down.""So the resiliency of a data center must consider how to build enough redundancy by design and by implementation into these data centers.""So our methodology is to look at the different risk factors that may have an impact on the facility itself, whether it is your own, or whether it is being hosted; you need to evaluate, and measure the impact of different risks and these are geological risks, meteorological risks and human risks, whether accidental or unintentional.""Nothing beats an on-site visit to check a data center's resiliency.""So the hybrid design is really all about building the necessary critical infrastructure that capitalizes on multiple sources of energy.""Education awareness is absolutely paramount. And that is probably one of our faults as well, data centers today are considered to be the naughty neighbors. I mean, they say, Oh, they're energy consuming, they take our water, they take our power; we as an industry need to educate our communities, we need to tell them what is it that we do. And of course, we need to make sure that we build them in a sustainable way, we'll use renewables, we will become community friendly. All of that must happen."Connect with Host Dr. Dave Chatterjee and Subscribe to the PodcastPlease subscribe to the podcast, so you don't miss any new episodes! Today is a rather special episode in which were are going to look back over half a century of an engineering career - and no doubt leap forward, sideways, upwards and wherever else to predict the future.Back in November 2001 when I was editor of New Civil Engineer magazine, I interviewed today's guest Mark Whitby. He was just about to take on the role of President of the Institution of Civil Engineers - one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering institutions in the world. After two hours in his company, asking questions and taking notes, I wrote” “his mind has raced through a thousand issues, the conversation leaping with his thoughts through the subjects of bridges, solar powered aircraft, local associations, knowledge sharing, steam engines, power cells, sustainability, urban design, modern art and the culture of engineering.”We were both exhausted! In those days we described Mark Whitby as the “enfant terrible” of the profession – a hugely creative, enthusiastic and passionate engineer, with a love of design, architecture, art and objects of beauty and a talent for building successful businesses - and for rubbing people up the wrong way.“I do wind people up and I am abrupt,” he said. “But my heart is on my sleeve so that everyone knows exactly where I am on issues.” Perfect material for a journalist! Some career indeed. It is 50 years since Mark left London University with a degree in Civil Engineering and after toying with the idea of becoming an architect or landscape architect, set about making his mark as an engineer with firms including Harris & Sutherland, Sir John Fairclough, Buro Happold and Anthony Hunt & Associates. But in 1982 he was ready to take on the world alone, and with colleague Bryn Bird and later Mike Crane, Mark set up what became the hugely successful Whitby, Bird and Partners – a business that he would eventually sell to Danish giant Ramboll in 2007.Not ready to sit back and rest, other businesses followed, including Whitby & Mohajer Engineers (WME) in the UAE, and Whitby Wood in the UK, where he still works today with Seb Wood.ResourcesWhitby Wood websiteThe National grid live - where does our power come from?Ordsall Chord - Vandalism or progress - Rail Engineer magazineEngineering with a passion: Interview with Mark Whitby President of the ICE - NCE

California is set to present its strategic plan to scale an offshore wind power industry based on unconventional floating wind technology. --- In late June the California Energy Commission will submit its strategic plan for the development of offshore wind energy to the state's legislature. The plan is the culmination of two years of efforts by California to jump start its offshore wind industry and help the state reach its goal of 100% carbon free electricity by the year 2045. Yet California's offshore wind ambitions are also a bet on floating offshore wind technology that is required by the state's deep ocean waters. The technology has scarcely been applied anywhere in the world, and it presents infrastructure and economic hurdles that could complicate the state's offshore wind efforts. Tim Fischer, Executive Director for Global Wind with Ramboll, a Danish offshore wind consultancy and engineering consultant to California effort, and Joe Rand of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, discuss the challenges of quickly scaling floating wind power to meet California's energy goals. They also consider the challenges of connecting large amounts of renewable energy to the on-shore grid, taking into account the need to balance infrastructure development with community priorities. Concept design of a timber high rise building in Oslo is attracting both awards and attention globally for its sustainable regeneration potential, even without firm plans to put the proposal into construction.   The masterminds behind the Regenerative Highrise scheme are Haptic Architects director Tomas Stokke and Ramboll director Ollie Wildman who join NCE editor Claire Smith to talk through the new approach and how other projects are looking to copy the idea. Both Tomas and Ollie call for greater consideration of the ability of tall buildings – in the right place – as a means to meet urbanisation without creating urban sprawl. They both suggest that cities need to consider vertical masterplanning in the same way they create horizontal masterplans but they also believe new buildings need to more carefully plan for future use.   The Oslo project, which recently won the Tall Building category at NCE's sister title Architectural Review's Future Projects Awards, is a concept to regenerate a socially challenging site in central Oslo. Ollie describes it as a concept to create conversation. As well as addressing the site's existing issues, the future-proofed design aims to create a building that can be adapted to meet future needs rather than being demolished and rebuilt after a few decades. The structure also features a range of materials, including major use of timber. Tomas talks about the need to focus on the ground floor interaction with the surrounding area in order to deliver on regeneration, explaining that we can't look at buildings in isolation and calls for them to be considered in context of the local environment. The Oslo design features three “ground floor levels” – one facing onto a road viaduct, another onto a river frontage and the third connects with public transport links.   Ollie then goes onto explain the structural design that allows for floor heights and layouts to be changed in the future to adapt to changing needs over the building's lifespan. In doing so he calls for more focus on creating space and less on designing buildings. “Without a single end use in mind, it becomes about creating space,” he said.

In today's episode we're talking about the contentious issue of tall buildings. Some people love them, some people hate them. My guests today have come up with a concept for high rise that could be much more sustainable and adaptable than conventional skyscrapers. My guests today are Tomas Stokke and Shonn Mills. Tomas is a co-founder of Haptic Architects based in London and Oslo. He overseas Haptic's international work and has taught, lectured, exhibited and been published internationally. Shonn Mills is Global Head of High Rise Buildings at Ramboll, with more than 20 years experience as an engineer. They have collaborated to produce a new concept for sustainable tall building design, which is called Regenerative Highrise. They have taken a really interesting approach in tackling a difficult urban site in Oslo and designing a building that responds to this while being low carbon and extremely adaptable. We talk about all of the interesting details in the conversation so I won't get into that now. Episode 16 of this podcast was called ‘Are Tall Buildings Sustainable?' and I concluded that typically tall buildings have a huge carbon and material footprint and its is clear that they can have a negative impact on a city's urban design, environment, economy and social life. So I came into this conversation a bit skeptical and ready to challenge them. We ended up having a really good conversation and I think they have done some really useful work here in pushing the design of tall buildings much closer towards sustainability and taking a long term approach. If you are enjoying the Green Urbanist podcast, the best thing you can do to support it is to share an episode with a friend or colleague who you think might enjoy it. I hope it sparks some interesting conversations for you. Links:Dezeen article on Regenerative Highrise: https://www.dezeen.com/2022/05/23/haptic-architects-ramboll-regenerative-high-rise/Sustainability of Downtown Highrise vs Suburban Low Rise study: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/321977968_Downtown_High-Rise_vs_Suburban_Low-Rise_Living_A_Pilot_Study_on_Urban_SustainabilityHaptic Architects: https://hapticarchitects.com/oslo-highrise/Ramboll: https://ramboll.com/contact/rdk/shonnGreen Urbanist websiteContact FormSocial Media:https://twitter.com/GreenUrbanPodhttps://www.instagram.com/greenurbanistpodhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/green-urbanist-podcast

In our first two-part episode, we dive into the troubling existence of a group of chemicals referred to as PFAS, with the nickname "Forever Chemicals," because they stubbornly hang around in water, air, fish, soil, people, and animals.  PFAS -- which stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl  chemicals -- are man-made creations that have been used in industry and consumer products worldwide since the 1950s. There are more than 4,000 of them, so it's a big family. They can be found in non-stick cookware, water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant fabrics and carpets,  cosmetics,  firefighting foams, and products that resist grease, water, and oil. Studies have shown that exposure to some PFAS in the environment may be harmful to humans and animals.PFAS contamination has sparked some major litigation, with some cases involving hundreds or thousands of individuals that have settled for hundreds of millions of dollars. The PFAS issue is significant enough that  -- despite so many other pressing issues -- the White House made it a top priority, kicking eight federal departments into gear to tackle the situation.  It's a hot topic that's going to be with us for many years. In Part 1 of the episode, we discussed the PFAS from the scientific and environmental engineering perspective. And to do that I was fortunate to have  Jim Fenstermacher and Dr. Jaana Pietari from the global engineering firm Ramboll.  Jim and Jaana have deep experience in environmental remediation involving a variety of contaminants, including PFAS. In Part 2, I am joined by Robert Chesler of Anderson Kill. Bob is a long-time expert on insurance coverage for long-tail and other claims. He's considered a guru in the field, and has represented policyholders in disputes over coverage with insurers for as long as I've known him. It's a serious subject and these are seriously qualified folks. I did my part to make a mockery of scientific terms as I struggled to say the name of this family of chemicals. Fortunately for you my guests were much more linguistically nimble and it is their voices you will hear more of.  This podcast is the audio companion to the Journal on Emerging Issues in Litigation, a collaborative project between HB Litigation Conferences and the Fastcase legal research family, which includes Full Court Press, Law Street Media, and Docket Alarm. Arndt and Schlenga spoke with NVIDIA AI Podcast host Noah Kravitz about the inspiration for Opseyes, which began with Arndt's career at wastewater industry leader Ramboll. Effluent has typically been analyzed by sending tightly sealed samples through the mail to experts. While speaking with his brother, a radiologist using deep learning, Arndt realized that AI could do something similar for wastewater samples. Schlenga then led the creation of Opseyes' convolutional neural network, which allows customers to upload a photo of a sample taken through a microscope. With Opseyes already in use at several wastewater plants, Arndt and Schlenga anticipate much more bacterial analysis in their future. https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2021/06/16/ai-opseyes-wastewater-analysis/

Today we will talk with Sofia Lundeholm about the backgrounds and basic assumptions of mobility. What is the PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE of mobility? How did we shape our cities 2000 years ago? What is mobility about nowadays? What will be the future mobility trends? I was also curious about: who is deciding about mobility and shaping it in our cites? Is it us - citizens or rather decision-makers and the city councils? What about the electric and autonomous cars? All in all, they are still… cars, occupying our commonly owned public spaces and streets. We end our talk trying to answer the question: what is the future of mobility? Sofia is a Lead Urban Designer and Senior Architect - at Henning Larsen Architects. She is leading a collaborative study about the impact of future mobility on the design of cities between Henning Larsen Architects and Rambøll Smart Mobility. In this show I’m talking to Stefano Capra of engineering consulting giants Ramboll, about some of the ways CFD is used in the design of the built environment & the challenges faced in that sector. Stefano gives us his insight into what’s challenging, what’s “normal” and what’s on his CFD wish list, including: • why CFD in the built environment is about more than just pedestrian comfort studies • how CFD is becoming increasingly accepted as an aid to the established experimental methods, as opposed to a replacement • how CFD routinely helps save millions of dollars in construction costs (and thousands of tons of CO2 ) by accurately predicting the wind loading on new designs Links --- • Connect with Stefano on LinkedIn (mention the podcast

Känner du igen dig i listan här ovanför? More and more, societal culture is emphasizing the need to be environmentally conscience. Everyday citizens are becoming more aware and socially active in their concerns for the air quality in their neighborhoods. Traditionally, legal standards have enforced monitoring ambient air for a standard criteria of pollutants, but this wide net is no longer sufficient. Air quality is now a factor that can attract new residents, businesses, and, in some areas, tourism. This social push is setting a demand for more specific, and complex forms of monitoring. Companies such as CIMCON Lighting, and Ramboll's Environment and Health Division are working to deploy sensor solutions that are flexible and can satisfy the unique goals for every region. "We are really starting to see monitoring in new ways. Ways that are social and ways that are fueled by the public and public awareness," said Julia Luongo, Managing Consultant for Ramboll Group's Air Quality division. Luongo came on the podcast, joined by Chris Davis, Vice President of Smart Cities for CIMCON Lighting, to discuss what are the major reasons – regulatory, social, environmental, economic – that compel cities and utilities to measure environmental air quality, and what is driving the need for more distributed and granular air quality monitoring? While the technology is growing in efficiency, the challenge deepens for city planners, as the amount of data can be overwhelming. The question now is how do cities process instrument data and provide meaningful solutions to its citizens.
