Being your own boss can be difficult. Just take it from entrepreneurs Mari Jones (Colgate) and Abby Wempe (Kansas State). They both agree that it takes a support system to help you rise up and overcome the obstacles of entrepreneurship. Join our True and Constant Podcast hosts, Lex and Emma, as they explore the power of community within entrepreneurialism with Mari and Abby!   California native Mari Jones grew up playing, camping and learning to drive on her father's sprawling Sonoma-Cutrer estate. By 12, she took her first trip to Burgundy with her father. It was there that Mari discovered pinot noir and became hooked. After earning a degree in philosophy at Colgate University, Mari lived in Colorado before returning to Sonoma in 2012 to work with her father. At Emeritus Vineyards, Mari has led the transition and transformation of the Emeritus team to the next generation of pinot noir icons. She oversees all aspects of Emeritus Vineyards, cultivating the highest standards of excellence. Under her leadership, both estate vineyards have become certified sustainable and carbon negative.   Raised in Lawrence, Kansas, Abby Wempe was inspired by her parents' dedication to their professions. Drawing from her father's experience as a golf pro on event days and her mother's skills as a nurse, Abby became an event planner. Abby loves the excitement, stress and anticipation that comes with pulling off amazing events. After graduating from Kansas State University in 2011, she took a corporate job but quickly realized her true passion was the hospitality industry. Since 2013, she has fully embraced working weekends and diving into the entrepreneur lifestyle as an event planner.

There's plenty more, though, so sit back and enjoy!Yes, Balazs and Mike have been away for a couple of weeks. Balazs spent time in Japan after his vacation in Hungary. Mike flew the opposite direction and stayed in South Florida for some much-needed holiday. In this episode, travel sets the stage, but with watches as the primary focus.Handgelenks KontrolleAfter a brief chat, Balazs introduces the newly reborn Vulcain Cricket that is in with him for review. He has the larger-sized model and we even get to hear it! Mike stepped off a plane only hours earlier and is wearing the watch that accompanied him for two weeks in a row: the new Breitling SuperOcean 42.TravelBefore discussing travel, we discuss the new Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date models in “Vibing Orange” and “Disco Blue.” Neither of us are fans although we do enjoy G.O. Finally, we cap things off with a talk about recent watch thefts and whether it's beginning to shape what we wear when we hit the road. RaceBets-Podcast!

Revenants of the German Empire: Colonial Germans, Imperialism, and the League of Nations (Oxford UP, 2019) reveals the various ways in which Colonial Germans attempted to cope with the loss of the German colonies after the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. These Kolonialdeutsche (Colonial Germans) had invested substantial time and money in German imperialism. German men and women from the former African colonies exploited any opportunities they could to recover, renovate and market their understandings of German and European colonial aims in order to reestablish themselves as "experts" and "fellow civilizers" in European and American discourses on nationalism and imperialism. Colonial officials, settlers, and colonial lobbies made use of the League of Nations framework to influence diplomatic flashpoints including the Naturalization Controversy in South African-administered Southwest Africa, the Locarno Conference, and German participation in the Permanent Mandates Commission from 1927-1933. Sean Wempe revises standard historical portrayals of the League of Nations' form of international governance, German participation in the League, the role of interest groups in international organizations and diplomacy, and liberal imperialism. In analyzing Colonial German investment and participation in interwar liberal internationalism, the project also challenges the idea of a direct continuity between Germany's colonial period and the Nazi era. The son of a German watchmaker, Rudy followed in his father’s footsteps, working at his father's shop before becoming a master watchmaker for Wempe. Are Multibrand Stores Viable?Rob talks to Rudy about the viability of multibrand stores. Wempe Jewelers expanded their Fifth Aveune location in 2016, and they hold 20 of the finest brands. Rob wonders if watches appeal to millennial buyers, and, apparently, they’re an acquired taste. Many people have smartwatches now, which aren’t as big a seller at Wempe as some of its others, but Rudy believes both traditional and smartwatches can coexist peacefully in the same market. Trendy Watches and High DemandThere are certain watch brands that are in incredibly high demand. Two of which are Rolex and Patek Philippe. Rudy jokes that a reason his hair is going gray is because people come in  and ask to purchase a watch and don't realize there are incredibly long wait lists for some of the popular styles. The demand for watches is huge—but that also means some people are going to have competing prices, and others are going to attempt to create counterfeits. Show CancellationsBaselworld is one of the biggest shows to have been canceled this year. (It's been rescheduled for January 2021.) Rudy has been going for 32 years, and this will be the first one he’s missed. Watches & Wonders Geneva has also been canceled for this year. For Rudy, there’s nothing quite like going to the shows in person and getting to see and feel watches up close—so these events will surely be missed. Wempe Jewelers, Beyond the WatchesWempe Jewelers is, of course, known for selling watches, but it's more than just that. Wempe also sells jewelry. Recently, Mariah Carey performed“ All I Want For Christmas Is You” for her 25th-anniversary event and wore a $500,000 necklace from Wempe. You’ll also hear Rudy tell a few stories of other celebrity clientele, including Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro. (Image courtesy of Wempe Jewelers)

Ryan grew up in a military family, one Great Grandfather in WWI, two Grandfathers in WWII/Korea, his Father w/ 30+ years, both of his older Sisters, his younger Brother and his Wife! That is stacking the service department. Holding all of this together was Ryan’s Mom, Diane, who guided the family together through the good times and held them together during the hard ones. Ryan talks about the influence that this rich military service tradition had on him and where it lead him through life.   As a West Point graduate, Ryan was in his first year when 9/11 happen, just miles away from the Academy proper. He talks about the impact of that, staying on and hearing the names of past grads who were killed in combat. He describes an environment that was not only educating tomorrow military leaders, but doing it at a time of war. Very powerful and hope I asked the right questions.   Ryan dug his bones in East Bagdad during he surge, the Push River Valley and Kandahar while in. A career that spanned 10 years gave Ryan an insight into himself and opens that to the Veterans out there that could gain from this knowledge. It is there for you if you need it. Thank you, Ryan.   Key take-aways here are to think of your mental health as you would when you hear of a sports star talking with their psychologist before a race, game or bout. As a Veteran there are key components to our lives that require this same level of self care. “Know yourself and seek self-improvement”.  Ryan brings a stoic virtue into the chat when he says “control your environment”, be present for the things that you can influence. Knowing that parts of your life that are uncontrollable are just that, Uncontrollable. Last very good point and one I am going to be leaning hard on going forward, find a Veteran and get on his or her’s plan. The old saying “What to be successful, follow someone who is successful” rings true in so many things we do.   Everyone stay safe out there and share the episode and podcast with those you chat with. If we can fix it, make it worth you sharing, then let us know. Many blessings and stay safe.   HOV©2020

Although most community financial institutions may not think of reward checking as their first (or best) weapon in the battle for deposits, it probably should be. In part two, Kasasa CCO Greg Wempe unpacks what makes reward checking such a useful tool and how community banks and credit unions can use it to hedge against a volatile market.

Community banks and credit unions are looking for ways to grow their deposits despite the uncertain economic outlook. WELCOME TO THE FUTURE FORUM 2010 http://www.designhotels.com/future_forum_2010/welcome http://futureblog.designhotels.com/ The Design Hotels™ Future Forum 2010 will focus on "Hybrid Thinking" in the context of hospitality. Hybrid thinking requires much more than a multidisciplinary team – it requires a team of multidisciplinary people. Hybrid thinkers blend different skills and fields of thought to develop innovative concepts. Their ideas have the ability to shape entire industries from automotive to hospitality. Like-minded, visionary hoteliers around the globe have started to create hybrid properties that go far beyond the original purpose of simply providing a bed. Multidimensional hotel concepts focusing on authentic experiences are on the rise, combining elements from galleries, hospitals or film theatres with the classic idea of hospitality. Find out more at this year`s Design Hotels™ Future Forum. Please check back regularly for more information, or send us an email to: FUTUREFORUM@DESIGNHOTELS.COM to be added to our mailing list.
