In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast, I'm joined by Sarah Keh, the vice president of corporate social responsibility at Prudential Financial to discuss the company's $180 million committment to helping opportunity youth find a pathway to good jobs and wealth building. Keh sat down with me to discuss the philanthropy in June at the Aspen Ideas Festival. Opportunity youth are young people between the ages of 16 and 24 who currently are not in formal education or training and are unemployed. There are almost 6 million people who fall into that designation, a number that has grown since the COVID pandemic. Even before the pandemic, in 2019, Prudential decided to invest $180 million by 2025 in programs that will help young people across the globe gain the right skills to compete for and succeed in quality jobs.  "The reason why they have come into the situation that there are in...is not because they don't have the will or the desire. It's oftentimes they are born into a situation that doesn't provide them the access to the opportunities that you and I may have had in our upbringing," says Keh. She says the Prudential believes it is important to look at opportunity youth for their potential and act on it. "We're really focused on this population because we believe these are our future leaders of nonprofits, of businesses, of government, and they just need access to the right resources and tools to provide them the good skill." Keh says the company has already achieved in five years what it had set out to achieve in six – the $180 million in nonprofit programs that are providing that training and opportunity. "We've invested in over 20 different organizations globally that have impacted hundreds and thousands of young people. We know even just last year through our impact data that over 500,000 opportunity youth were connected to training opportunities and employment opportunities." Here is the U.S., those workforce development programs include Year Up, YouthBuild, and Per Scholas. Keh and I go into details on how these programs are helping and how the can help young people build wealth. We also discuss Prudential's work of a local level in Newark, New Jersey, the headquarters of the company which turns 150 years old next year. You can listen to the podcast here, or wherever you get your podcasts. This podcast was recorded at the Aspen Ideas Festival, in collaboration with the Aspen Institute. In this episode of the Mass Construction Show I speak with Brian McPherson, Executive Director at YouthBuild Boston. Brian explains what YouthBuild Boston does, the many ways the community benefits from the program, where the program sources funding, and how an individual or organization can get involved. There are four programs at YouthBuild Boston: The Building Trades Exploration (BTE) Program begins with a three-week mental toughness training to help participants show up on time, be committed, maintain a drug-free lifestyle, and work on goal setting. The Pre-Apprentice (PA) Program is the flagship of their programming. The Designery is available to some high school students to teach architectural principles they need to go into the architectural career pattern so they can be prepared for admission and participation in design schools. The Facilities Maintenance Program is an 18-month long program with no age limit. Participants work Monday through Friday in the field and spend Saturdays taking classes at Wentworth Institute of Technology where they earn an associates degree. Brian has two rules that will serve anyone well: be where you're supposed to be, and be doing what you're supposed to be doing. She shares how she bravely told a few friends when she was young and received homophobic responses that cost her most of her friendships. Jiggy shares how she eventually ended up attending Pennsylvania State University, and discovered another set of new words - "vulnerability", "self awareness" and "empathy". It would be her time attending some gen-ed classes that ended up changing the trajectory of her life. It opened up a whole new space that she never knew existed and one that went against everything she'd been taught as a young girl. A space where emotional intelligence set her on a healing journey.   Jiggy is a youth motivational speaker and mental performance coach helping high school and college students increase the longevity of their performance and demand for excellence. Millions of young adults are too often defined only by their struggles with unemployment, poverty, and crime. Traditionally known as “disenfranchised,” “marginalized,” “disconnected,” and “at risk,” these young people aspire to improve their lives and communities. These young people are typically defined solely by their challenges, not by their potential. They urgently need – and aspire to earn – knowledge, training, and opportunities that lead to long-term professional and personal success. Stay ConnectedIs there a song that encouraged you or changed your perspective? As we’ve discussed before, the unfortunate reality about outdoor recreation is that not everyone has equitable access to these opportunities and there are people who don’t necessarily feel welcome or safe in certain spaces. And while we continue advocating for equity in parks and recreation, it’s important to recognize that there are many systemic barriers in place that need to be broken down if we want a future with truly equitable outcomes. We’re excited to be joined on the show today by three individuals who are doing their part to address inequities and systemic racism in the outdoor spaces in their city. Today we are welcoming staff members of the Jefferson Memorial Forest in Louisville, Kentucky, which is the largest municipal urban forest in the U.S., as well as a staff member of the Urban Conservation Corps (UCC) at YouthBuild Louisville.  We’re thrilled to be joined by JoCari Beattie, a community outreach specialist at Jefferson Memorial Forest; Dashaune Jones, the ECHO Mobile program lead at Jefferson Memorial Forest; and Kenyetta Johnson, a program assistant and focus area coordinator for UCC at YouthBuild Louisville. These three have been working tirelessly to provide opportunities for underserved youth to experience the outdoors and much more. Tune in to the full episode below to learn more about JoCari, Dashaune and Kenyetta and the opportunities they’re creating for underserved youth in Louisville, as well as: What equity in parks and recreation and access to these opportunities means to each of them personally. How the ECHO Mobile program is meeting people where they are and bringing nature to youth who don’t have access to nature. How the ECHO Mobile program has been impacted by COVID-19 and how it has been adapted. How their work is addressing equity and systemic racism in the outdoor recreation space. How park and recreation professionals can champion and foster equity in their communities and increase access to these kinds of opportunities, and more! Join us for this special program in The Commonwealth Club's series recognizing recipients of the Club's 2020 Distinguished Citizens Award. This program honors Lauren (Laurie) Dachs and her colleagues at the S. D. Bechtel Jr., Foundation. The Foundation, based in San Francisco, was established in 1957 by Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr., as a reflection of his personal commitment to ensuring a prosperous California. To this day, Mr. Bechtel remains involved with the foundation as chair of its board, and his daughter, Laurie Dachs, serves as president. The foundation is a grant-making organization that "invests in preparing California's children and youth to contribute to the state's economy and communities, and in advancing management of California's water and land resources.” In 2009 the foundation made a pivotal decision to spend down its assets in a defined period of time. The foundation will sunset at the end of 2020. The Commonwealth Club is pleased to honor the foundation's myriad achievements. Joya Banerjee joined the Bechtel Foundation in 2009, and she oversees the foundation's Environment Program. She works with the Environment team to advance water management and land stewardship in California, with a particular focus on advancing integrated solutions, building field capacity, and developing new partnerships. Prior to joining the foundation, Ms. Banerjee was an attorney at Latham & Watkins and worked for the City of New York, first with the Mayor's Office of Operations and later with the Economic Development Division of the Law Department. Banerjee graduated from the University of Southern California and received a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School. She currently serves on a range of advisory boards; she is a board member for the newly formed state California Water Data Consortium and the San Francisco-based 826 Valencia. Arron Jiron joined the Bechtel Foundation in 2012 and is the associate program director for the Education Program. He leads the team's grant making in education policy and advocacy, with an overall focus on supporting California's implementation of new math and science standards and on expanding civic learning, character development, and environmental literacy to improve the quality of student learning in and out of school. Before joining the foundation, for six years, Mr. Jiron served as program officer at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, where he led grant making for policy, advocacy and systems building to advance early education and youth development programs. Prior to that, he was the development director for a state intermediary that improves access and quality of youth development programs in California. Mr. Jiron started his career at a community action agency in Nebraska, where he led the creation of the Youth Opportunities Center, a comprehensive education division for low-income youth and young adults. There, he co-developed a nationally recognized restorative justice project for youth in the juvenile justice system, launched a YouthBuild program, and designed a regional workforce development system for adults. Young Adults Who Overcome Life Challenges through Education + Job Training

At critical times in their lives, Paula and Jasmine realized they needed to change things. That meant first getting their High School Diplomas! The San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School provides the perfect environment for them to succeed. Founded by San Jose City Council members Susan Hammer and Shirley Lewis in 1987, the San Jose Conservation Corps was one of the first urban conservation corps in the country. With strong support from the City of San Jose, SJCC+CS began operations with over 20 Corpsmembers in January 1988. Since then SJCC+CS has grown, opening its charter school in 2002 and expanded to two campuses in 2010. In 2001, SJCC+CS established a YouthBuild program, in partnership with the Department of Labor and AmeriCorps, helping to build affordable housing in San Jose while training students in the construction trades. While SJCC+CS no longer has a YouthBuild program, it continues to receive AmeriCorps funding, enabling current students to earn scholarships that can be used toward post-secondary education or vocational training. Over the past thirty years, SJCC+CS has grown and modified its programs to meet the needs of the over 10,000 young adults who have benefited from our services. Each SJCC+CS graduate graduates with the potential to earn $400,000 over the course of their lifetime. Since 2002, 3,134 youth have earned their high school diploma at SJCC+CS, creating a combined increased lifetime earnings of $1.25 billion.

One out of every 10 young people between the ages of 16 and 24 is neither working nor in school. These “disconnected” young people face an uphill battle finding work and are at risk of economic hardship well into adulthood. Although there are many programs that aim to reconnect young people to education and employment, findings from evaluations of these programs have been mixed. The evidence base has grown substantially in the past several months, though, as studies of three programs — YouthBuild, Year Up, and New York City’s Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP) — have released new findings. MDRC’s Dan Bloom and Cynthia Miller recently wrote a brief that discusses findings from the new studies and their implications for youth programs.
