I will always be different. This is what Shelby has always thought about himself. He has a weird pull to find the truth in things and has questioned almost everything for his entire life. He is not sure why or where it all started. It was not until his 21st birthday and a 3-day drinking binge that he fell into a mental health downward spiral he could never have imagined. He has been in the hole for a year with no help from doctors or the conventional system. He remembered laying in his bed one day and letting go of every last ounce of drive he had. Shelby thought that he actually might die. Everything just felt like death for him. However, he decided to give it one last shot and do everything he could to bounce back. He came back stronger than he ever was -- mentally and physically. Shelby continued to challenge himself, and now he is working on his new project, the Azhen Sanctuary, which serves his purpose of uncovering the truth and finding a better way to live. “No matter how prepared you think you are for the death of a loved one, it still comes as a shock, and it still hurts very deeply.” - Bill Graham Losing a family member is arguably one of the hardest things we will go through. Nothing can ever prepare us for grief. Losing someone is like losing a piece of yourself. According to the natural flow of life, the children say goodbye first to their parents. That is why it feels harder when it is the other way around. You can never imagine the pain parents have to go through in this unfortunate event. But have you ever thought about what siblings go through in such an occurrence? Usually, the parents mainly receive the condolences and the emotional support. But how about the sisters and brothers left behind? Are they receiving the same support they need in these times of grief? As a result, Zander Sprague ended up writing about his own experience in his book Making Lemonade: Choosing a Positive Pathway After Losing Your Sibling. Additionally, this opened him up to pursue and create a more epic journey for himself and others. Zander Sprague is an internationally acclaimed public speaker, Amazon Best-Selling Author, and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). Are entrepreneurs born or made? It can be a combination of both. Some of you might have a distant memory of your younger self mowing the lawn, selling some cookies or lemonades, or shoveling pathways to earn a few bucks. Out of our young mind's understanding, these little things are acts of entrepreneurship. As we grow older and gain knowledge, we may pursue further studies and hone our skills. Can you be an entrepreneur with a purpose in mind? Definitely YES! This is what PoP's guest, Ryan Allis, is all about. Ryan has demonstrated a keen interest in business ventures from an early age -- he has done landscaping for a local church, set up a computer business, and become a web designer. And as Ryan went to university, he explored more areas and met new people, and this is where he recognized the endless possibilities and opportunities ahead of him. Ryan is now the Chairman of Hive. His purpose on this planet is to build a global community of leaders committed to creating a better world. He was previously a technology entrepreneur and was CEO and Co-founder of iContact and led the company with 300 employees, 70,000 customers, and $50M in annual sales. Do you regularly attend church? Do you talk daily to God through prayers? Are you actively preaching the Gospel? If yes, then you are reflecting Christianity through your actions. But let me ask you, how genuine are these habits? Do you practice these habits out of a sincere commitment to being a disciple of Jesus or just to be called a Christian? In his younger years, Tom considers himself a “POP Christian”. One who calls himself a Christian but is very sketchy, superstitious, has a lot of bad habits, and is not a good influence on others. But a death-defying injury and the death of a close friend opened his eyes and impacted his beliefs on what genuine faith truly is. In this week's episode of People of Purpose, Tanur interviews his friend and mentor, Tom Wilcox. Tom, an author and follower of Jesus, spends his time learning, growing, and teaching Christians and those curious about faith and what it means to be a mature disciple of Jesus. They will talk about Tom's journey into becoming a genuine Christian and discipleship. One of the sacrifices discussed by the Torah in the beginning of the Book of Vayikra (beginning of chapter 3, and 7:11-12) is the Shelamim offering. Generally, Shelamim sacrifices are offered by individuals. The exception to this rule is the special Sheteh Ha'lehem offering brought on Shabuot, which consisted of two sheep and two loaves of bread, that were eaten by the Kohanim. This is the only example of Shalmeh Sibur – a Shelamim sacrifice offered collectively by the nation. Among the various types of Shelamim sacrifices which were offered is the “Shalmeh Hagiga” – the Shelamim sacrifice which one would offer when making his pilgrimage to Jerusalem on Pesach, Shabuot and Sukkot. Another is “Shalmeh Toda” – the thanksgiving offering which one would bring to express his gratitude to G-d after being extricated from a dangerous situation (as discussed below). Yet another type of Shelamim is the offering brought by the Nazir after the successful completion of the period of Nezirut which he had accepted upon himself (“El Nazir”). When a Toda sacrifice was offered, the animal sacrifice was accompanied by forty breads – thirty of which were unleavened, whereas the other ten were baked as Hametz. The Sefer Ha'hinuch explains that the thirty unleavened breads consisted of three groups of ten breads each. The first group was called “Ma'afeh Tanur,” and these were prepared by adding oil to the flour and then baking it. The second type was Rekikim, breads which were baked without oil, with the oil being added after they came out of the oven. The third type, called Murbechet, was prepared by boiling the flour in hot water, after which it was briefly baked and then deep fried, like a donut. Ten Esronim of flour were used for all thirty unleavened breads. The Sefer Ha'hinuch, following the view of the Rambam, maintained that offering a Toda sacrifice is voluntary, and not an obligation. The Sages taught that one would bring a Korban Toda after surviving four dangerous situations – illness, a sea voyage, captivity, and a journey through the desert. This is inferred from the 107 th chapter of Tehillim, which describes people giving praise and offering sacrifices to G-d after being rescued from these four dangers. Nevertheless, the Rambam maintained that this chapter in Tehillim merely encourages offering a thanksgiving sacrifice after safely enduring these experiences, but does not establish a Halachic obligation to do so. Some suggest drawing proof for the Rambam's position from the Halacha mentioned in the Sifra that Ma'aser Sheni money may be used to purchase a Toda offering. This money (onto which one exchanged the sanctity of the tithe of his produce and brought to Jerusalem) may not be used for obligatory offerings, and thus this Halacha would seem to prove that a Korban Toda is not mandatory. A Kohen who fails to perform the Shelamim sacrifice in the manner prescribed by the Torah is in violation of this affirmative command.
Have you ever watched a Disney movie? There is a big chance (if not 100%) that you had! As a kid, we grew up watching and loving classic Disney films such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Toy Story, and many more. Shay is not an exception. With her mother's unwavering support, she has set her mind to this goal while giving herself the chance to explore other activities. Since the age of 13, Shay has already made up her mind and heart that she wants to become an animator. After graduating high school, she planned on attending Full Sail University. However, what happens when fear creeps in and she feels like giving up on her plans? In this episode of People of Purpose, Tanur had the honor to interview Shay Stone, an author, life coach, and animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios. She has been working professionally in the film, television, and game industry for over 11 years. As little kids, we grew up looking up to superheroes. We are engrossed with their superpowers that we imagine ourselves having one. But, would you believe if we said that you don't need to be a superhero to be powerful? Yes, that's right! Each one of us has this power within ourselves that we have yet discovered. But to realize our fullest potential, we must first fully know ourselves – our identity and our truths. Understanding those aspects will allow us to create an internal experience within us, a sense of fulfillment, a flow of life. And how we feel inside is a contributing factor to our external actions – the things that we do to experience the life that we want. Helping others discover their power is what Ginny Gane does best. Ginny Gane has been working intimately with manifestors and empowering women around the world to transform mediocre lives into experiences of true abundance, joy, and love through leveraging principles of the Law of Attraction. One of the sacrifices discussed in the first section of the Book of Vayikra is the Minha offering, which was unique in that it involved not an animal, but rather flour. The Sefer Ha'hinuch lists the procedure for offering the Minha as the 116 th Biblical command. He explains that the purpose of this offering is “Hachna'at Ha'yeser” – subduing the evil inclination. When a person sees that his hard-earned assets are burned in fire because of his wrongdoing, he will be deterred from misconduct in the future, and will be more likely to restrain his sinful instincts. The word “Minha” means “gift,” and the Sefer Ha'hinuch presents two explanations for why the Torah uses this word in reference to the grain offering. First, he writes, the word “Minha” has the specific connotation of a small gift, like a small present one gives his fellow as a symbolic gesture in the hope of earning his favor. The Minha offering, of course, was far smaller and less costly than animal sacrifices, and so it is referred to with the term “Minha.” Secondly, the Sefer Ha'hinuch writes, the word “Minha” refers to a gift given voluntarily, and it is therefore used in reference to the grain offering, which was primarily offered as a voluntary sacrifice, notwithstanding the fact that some Minha offerings were obligatory (as we will soon see). The Sefer Ha'hinuch lists three special Minha offerings which were brought on behalf of the entire nation: the Omer offering from the first harvested grain, which was offered on the second day of Pesach; the “Sheteh Ha'lehem” offering, which consisted of two leavened loaves and offered on Shabuot (marking the only time when a Minha was prepared as Hametz); and the “Lehem Ha'panim” – the bread baked each week and placed on the Shulhan (table in the Bet Ha'mikdash). The Sefer Ha'hinuch then lists the nine types of Minha offerings which were brought by individuals: 1) Minhat Hoteh – a sinner's offering. In some situations, a sinner who must offer an atonement offering, but cannot afford an animal, is allowed to bring the less expensive Minha offering, instead. 2) Minhat Kena'ot – the Minha offering brought by a woman suspected of marital infidelity (“Sota”) as part of the special process by which her guilt or innocence was determined. 3) Minhat Hinuch – the Minha offering brought by every Kohen the first day he began serving as a Kohen. 4) Minhat Habitin – the Minha offering brought each day by the Kohen Gadol. 5) Minhat Solet – a voluntary offering consisting of raw flour and oil. 6) Minhat Mahabat – a voluntary offering consisting of flour fried in oil in a shallow pan. 7) Minhat Marheshet – a voluntary offering consisting of flour deep fried in oil. 8) Minhat Ma'afeh Tanur – a voluntary offering consisting of flour and oil that were baked into thin crackers in an oven. 9) A second type of Minhat Ma'afeh Tanur, which was baked into thick loaves, as opposed to thin crackers. The person who brings a Minha offering would place the offering in a metal utensil and give it to a Kohen. The Kohen would consecrate the utensil, and bring it to the top of the altar. He would take a “Kometz” (“handful”) and place it onto the fire on the altar, and the rest would be eaten by the Kohanim. This Misva applies during the times of the Bet Ha'mikash, and to the Kohanim. A Kohen who did not follow the prescribed procedure for the offering of the Minha has violated this affirmative command. A person who vowed to offer a voluntary offering and failed to do has transgressed the separate Misva forbidding violating one's vows.

On one of her travels after she graduated high school, Carolin Zeitler met a woman who studied dance therapy. When she heard the term, she knew this was what she needed to study. A couple of years later, she started to study dance therapy. The training did so much for her and her personal development and for that alone it was worth doing. She then became an instructor and a member of the board of examiners at the dance therapy institute, where they developed training for coaches who would use movement and expression as two of their main tools in coaching. Later in Qatar, she built a communication coaching company, as well as a women’s empowerment initiative from scratch. They built a community, offered year-round events, like workshops, masterminds, and smaller conferences to keep the How Women Work (HWW) community engaged. She then moved to a little island where she's been living her purpose in smaller ways by giving workshops at festivals, coaching one-to-one clients, ghostwriting books for entrepreneurs. Recently she's gotten involved in the Gaianet project, which has given her a chance to discover new ways of working together and organizing a company. Her work has always been about flow, connection, culture, inclusion, and growth. Listen as we talk about:
Ellen Shane was originally from Montreal, Canada. She moved to Los Angeles in 1996, just before the birth of her third child, Emily, in July 1996. Emily's tragic murder at the age of 13 in April 2010 changed her life - and that of her family - forever. Emily was in 8th grade and in middle school when she was killed. They created the 501(c)3 nonprofit charity that bears her name very soon afterward. Initially, it was a site where people logged good deeds performed in Emily’s memory to honor her persona. After two years of enduring the court system regarding the homicide, she felt compelled to do more to honor her memory and help others. Emily struggled academically due to dyslexia and processing issues. She fell in a “grey” area, not needing or even qualifying for any type of special education, yet facing challenges for her knowledge and ability to be reflected in her academic performance. Ellen had worked with her for many years, but starting in middle school, that became a less than harmonious arrangement. Children in middle school are at the age of shifting from their parents as being the major influence in their lives, to their peers. Emily wanted to be independent and resented my constant questioning and help - it became a battle. It was her husband who observed that while she could help her with her academic difficulties, the result by 8th grade was major disharmony. Her husband wisely told her to go back to being Emily’s mother - not her tutor and constant force of focusing on her homework, grades, etc. They turned to outside help. After experimenting (hiring very experienced teachers, educational therapists), the surprising result was that she performed the best with university students. It became clear why; they are young, and a middle schooler can easily relate to them. Also, there is a comfort level. Rather than someone older, who is perceived as an authoritarian figure, a university student is at an age to which a middle schooler can easily relate to. Besides, they make ideal role models, as they are in university. Ellen's experience with Emily, in which she learned firsthand that there is nothing in the school system to address children who fit her profile (a middle school student in the mainstream classroom who risks academic failure) led her to be clear on what she could do. She created the SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program to support those children who risked failure in the mainstream middle school classroom like Emily with the type of support they specifically needed to perform to their best academic ability. Unlike Emily, the SEA Program is solely available to those students who could not otherwise afford the type of intensive and individualized academic tutoring, and mentorship SEA provides. Ellen teamed up with a middle school teacher who had taught for over 40 years, and he helped her put the Program together. She brought her perspective as a parent; he, as an experienced educator. She decided to only focus on middle school-aged children, not only because Emily was in middle school, but because it is a critical time to “catch” those students who “don’t fit the mold” and help set them on the path to success. If a child is below grade level in one or more subjects or is lost in math, for example, addressing the issue and offering solutions are far better than having them pushed ahead to high school when they would be truly lost. Not only does SEA allow students to have the support necessary in the subjects in which they are failing or truly struggling, the vetted and trained mentor/tutors also focus on two key areas: organizational skills and study skills. The only “cost” of participation: each child must perform one good deed or act of kindness for another, and it must be entered on our website. It is important to note that SEA hires mostly university students or recent grads. They provide a source of meaningful employment. In addition to the SEA Program, she has a private practice for grief support. Ellen is not formally credentialed but studied grief extensively and took a course for practitioners with David Kessler (a known “grief guru”). Also - she has written a children’s book, a true story titled “Emily’s Gift: The True Story of Sherlock and Jackson”. It is the first in a series of true stories about their dogs. She has won several awards for her work with the SEA Program. While the creation of SEA was a way to cope with Emily’s death by being proactive, and she loves that their work and mission is all in her memory, what drives her now are the results. There is nothing more rewarding than giving a child the opportunity for a brighter future. The results of SEA motivates Ellen to continue - and ideally expand (they just need the resources to do so). Two of the awards she has received that are of note: A Lifetime Achievement Award from President Obama in 2015, and A Malibu Times Citizen of the Year Award in 2013. Quinntin Ruiz Since Quinntin Ruiz was seven years old, he had the ambition to become a doctor and find a cure for Downs syndrome (DS). He worked hard enough to earn his way into Pomona College, the #1 ranked college in the U.S. according to Forbes, and to do research at the University of California, Irvine, one of only two colleges in the U.S. that specialize in DS research. However, after over eight hundred hours of research, he was disappointed with the inefficiencies and the slow progress of academic research. He thought there had to be a better way and chose to pursue the startup path. After running major marketing campaigns for HomeHero, a venture-backed startup dedicated to helping families find affordable in-home care for their loved ones, he was hooked. He fell in love with the fast-paced nature of startups and looked to accelerate the difference he made in the world and donate a large portion of his earning to aid in DS research and towards effective altruism charities. He created his first startup called Cartpool when he was nineteen years old, an on-demand food delivery startup for college students. This was at the time when PostMates and UberEats were just starting to enter the market. He raised over 6-figures from an angel investor and expanded the startup to eight colleges in southern California. After realizing the business was a “race-to-the-bottom” economic model, he decided to shut it down three years later. For a year, he worked as the COO of Rasur Foundation International, a nonprofit dedicated to helping parents overcome adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) so parents don’t pass that pain on to their children. There, he helped create a product niche, grow the team, and automate sales and marketing systems. Currently, he is a co-founder of Hero International, an education startup dedicated to helping empower a thousand purpose-driven entrepreneurs to build sustainable companies in the next five years. His startup was considered one of the top 10% of companies that applied to YC Startup School and 1% of company profits are donated to Kiva, a non-profit focused on empowering low-income entrepreneurs from around the world to grow their businesses. George Lantay A lifelong student of the human experience, George began his journey in meditation at the age of 7 and started facilitating transformational work professionally at the age of 15. After spending 6 years working in 5 psychology research labs studying optimized work culture, working in numerous positions facilitating teambuilding and leadership development, and teaching martial arts, meditation, and dance all in and around the #1 ranked US psychology school UNC Chapel Hill, George spent 2 years traveling learning from personal development masters around the world and realized that what he had found was 10x more effective than anything he had seen in psychology and organizational development work in the US. Upon this realization, George founded Hero University with the vision of creating a place where people could have everything they need to become purpose-driven entrepreneurs. Through the use of advanced emotional intelligence training alongside inner storytelling, the course he teaches personally empowers entrepreneurs to create the emotional reality of what they want to build to drive business results and impact for the people they serve. Since the creation of his non-profit media company in 2000, Thebaut has been making films to raise awareness of coming to the global water crisis, food shortages and the resulting dire effect on international security. Thebaut’s catalogue of documentaries on climate change has awakened and activated a large audience. These titles include “Running Dry,” The American Southwest, Are We Running Dry,” “Beyond the Brink,” and “California’s Watershed: Beyond the Brink.” Throughout his career, Jim Thebaut has written, produced and directed an array of prominent, socially significant productions, including his 1992 Cable Ace Award-nominated "America Undercover" documentary for HBO, “The Iceman Tapes - Conversations with a Killer.” He has also produced A&E’s “Bad Cops” and “Execution at Midnight.” Thebaut was the executive producer for the CBS television dramatic special “A Deadly Business,” which exposed organized crime's involvement in the toxic waste business. Gabrielle Glancy has been an entrepreneur since the age of four when she sold stickballs for ten cents less than cost back to the boys who had hit them onto her grandfather’s roof in Sea Gate, Coney Island, where she grew up. Just before founding New Vision Learning, at the height of the dot com boom, Ms. Glancy invented Facebook (before there was such a thing) and called it Townsquare.com. The founder of eBay, whose daughter she had helped get into Williams, told her it was a brilliant idea, but that to generate revenue, she would need to sell ads. Selling ads seemed like selling out, and so she founded New Vision Learning instead. As a teacher, educational consultant and college counselor, for nearly thirty years, Gabrielle Glancy has been in the business of helping students find and realize their dreams. Not only has she helped countless students find a way to harness their strengths to overcome their challenges — to learn how to learn — but as Director of New Vision Learning, she has helped thousands of students — all over the Bay Area, New York City, Los Angeles, across the U.S., and all over the world, locate and get into the colleges of their dreams. Throughout her career, she has worked in admissions three separate times at three different and highly respected colleges and universities. She knows exactly what it takes to get in and that helps her every day as she guides students through the college application process. She has taught at some of the most prestigious secondary schools, colleges and universities in the world including The University of San Francisco, New College, Lang College, The New School for Social Research, Saint Ann’s School for Gifted and Talented in New York City, Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough, California, The American-International School of Israel, The American School in London, and Villanova Prep, where she helped foreign and American students abroad (including boys from Eton and St. Paul’s in London) prepare for the SATs and apply to college. For the past several years, she has been Series Editor of Best College Essays 2014, 2016 and 2018. And she has authored THE book on writing college essays called The Art of the College Essay, one of the bestselling books on the subject. Her new book, UNSTUCK, which helps students free themselves from writer's block, is now out. Gabrielle Glancy has been awarded Teacher of the Year by the National Association for Teachers of the ARTS, and won the European Council of Independent School’s prize for educational writing. Bowen Dwelle was born in 1970 and raised and lived most of his life in San Francisco. He now lives outside the machine, #homefree, and mobile in his van, spending much of his time in the high mountains of the American West. He did not discover his purpose until recently. He fell into a first career in software at an early age because they had computers around the house and finds it very fascinating. He got good at working on it and there were a lot of interesting jobs that had to do with computers as the internet was just coming online in the mid-’90s. Even as he succeeded in his first career, he knew that he does not want to continue on that path. As Bowen said, “I didn’t know what my path was, but I knew that wasn’t it”. Along the way, he managed to start a business on his own, a small conference that gradually became a successful business. He worked on it for many years that it became successful enough to be sold in early 2015. The process of unearthing his purpose went in parallel with unwinding the depression that he had experienced for much of my life. He thinks it goes hand in hand. He was depressed because he didn’t have a purpose, and as a man, aimlessness is failure. He didn’t have purpose because his intuition wasn’t working—and for the same reason, he couldn’t move beyond his anxious and depressed state of mind. He couldn’t hear the messages or see the signs, so he didn’t know which way to go. As he gradually reawakened my intuition, he began to see indications of what mattered to him and of what was keeping him in such a low place emotionally. Finally, he emerged and was able to connect with his intuition, and with a sense of real purpose. Two years into creating and hosting People of Purpose, I sustained the podcast through challenges such as an intensive one year master’s degree and teaching Residency program, the startup of a three state, three partner real estate investing business, and making the decision to get engaged, married, and move back to Thailand. And now People of Purpose has a team of five! Listen in this interview as I reflect on the different stages and challenges in my journey of purpose the day after my Thai fiance received her visa to the U.S. In this interview I was in Bangkok and interviewed by my valued friend Nikita Yatchenko while he was visiting family in Moscow. I think our interview captured so many of the challenges people who are on purposeful paths are facing. Topics like staying true to the goals you’ve made to yourself as you and your circumstances change - pursuing money within purpose - maintaining self care while having an enormous amount of responsibility. These are each so important to develop a stance toward and have a proactive plan in place for how you will handle all the shifts that come when pursuing a personally purposeful path. I absolutely loved sharing my thoughts and experiences on these pressing and impactful topics. Bryan Falchuk was a guest of People of Purpose on episode 015. He came into my life by serendipity on his 80 something podcast interview. His story of losing more than 100 pounds and overcoming the pain of his wife's battle with cancer is inspirational. Today he runs marathons and inspires people to live a better life every day through his book, Ted Talks, and now his podcast Do a Day. He asked me to be a guest on his podcast to share my story of how I used my rock bottom experience nearly dying after a major fall at Yosemite National Park to live a life more alive and purpose driven. Below is his writeup: "After suffering many injuries and a major concussion when he fell off the side of a mountain, Tanur was forced to relook at the idea of purpose, the choices we make to relearn life, and how to actually live it. Tanur had me on his show a while ago, and I was blown away by the depth of his soul and his humanness, and knew I had to have him on my show one day. Let's just say I wasn't let down." Tanur Badgley is a school teacher, blogger, and host of his own podcast, People of Purpose. Fascinated with understanding the unique gifts he's been given and how he is shaped into a higher purpose when he chooses to live with full appreciation of these gifts. At age 19, during the summer break after his freshman year of college, Tanur was hiking in Yosemite National park with his father and younger brother. When his younger brother decided to venture off the beaten path and got stuck, Tanur found himself on a small ledge with no safe way down. Tanur ended up barrel rolling down the mountain, and sustained multiple injuries, but miraculously none of them were fatal. Three years later, Tanur finished college without a plan or purpose. he found himself working a soulless corporate sales job, battling depression, and suffering from a second concussion. He finally found his path and purpose in 2015 when he packed up and moved to Phrae, Thailand to become an English teacher to 400 5th and 6th graders. During this time he kept up his blog, Student of the World, with information he found out about himself and the world through teaching, volunteering on a organic farm in Cambodia, trekking to Mt. Everest Bas Camp, sitting for a 5-day meditation course, and his month-long yoga teacher training certification course in Rishikesh, India. One year later, Tanur felt happy and whole with his new life style, so he decided not to renew his teaching contract, opting instead to vagabond and couch-surf across Southeast Asia, the U.S., and Canada through family and friends. During this time, Tanur started his podcast, People of Purpose, in October of 2017 because he felt compelled to go beyond himself and begin a project that shares the stories and wisdom of all the purposeful people he met along the way. People of Purpose features guests who live with a high degree of intentionality, are leading communities toward positive change, and are treading a path that is very authentic to their passions and purpose. People of Purpose has expanded to now include a biweekly newsletter where Tanur shares what he's been experiencing and dwelling on to grow in his purpose and how they can be applied to your life as well. After 15 months of odd jobs and moving around, Tanur finally moved to San Francisco in July of 2018 where he's working on getting his Masters of Education in one year through an accelerated program and teaches 7th grade at a urban, public-charter school in San Francisco. Tanur is driven by the purpose he can express through each of his endeavors and projects and the consistency of learning and challenging that helps him grow into his purpose which is "to be a conduit of God's love by accepting everything He is, opening himself to learning challenges through difference, and using his gifts to live, purposefully, in order to help others find their purposes and fulfill their potential." You can follow Tanur on his journey through Facebook and Instagram at @peopleofpurposepodast Bryan has been so generous to grant me republishing rights so we could share this with the People of Purpose audience. Listen as we talk about: How intentionality and purpose are the key themes to both this interview and Tanur's life journey How Tanur chose the more risky choice while on the ledge with his brother, and it turned out to be the more foolish choice. How Tanur was frustrated with the rescue team because they focused their help on him, while his brother was still on the ledge and in danger. How he got his second concussion while he was angry because he was on the wrong life path and letting it effecting his day to day. How Tanur got to focus on himself while healing from his head injury and it helped him define his purpose and how to live for his own interests. How he dropped everything in America and moved to Thailand to pursue a more peaceful life. How he used the time and the new perspective to move forward from his last relationship. How Tanur is positive that he wouldn't be where he is now if not for the travel or the concussions. How his teaching job has allowed him to see that teaching is the most proactive force for good. How difficult walking the line between being in the world, but not of the world is for him. Tanur Badgley is a school teacher, blogger, and host of the People of Purpose podcast. He is fascinated with understanding the unique gifts he has been given and how he is shaped into a higher purpose when he chooses to live with full appreciation of those gifts. He believes we all have these gifts and can use them to unlock our infinite potential through pursuing our purpose. Tanur started his own path to purpose after a near-death experience falling at Yosemite National Park at the age of 19. Three years later he finished out college without a plan or a purpose to pursue. He found himself working a soulless corporate sales job, battling with depression from a devastating breakup, and eventually lying a dark room in the cold Minnesota winter after suffering his second major concussion. After three weeks of healing in the dark and two months of rehabilitation, Tanur was able to learn how to truly listen to from his heart. During his work disability, he put in motion everything he needed to move to Thailand. and become a teacher. In September of 2015 Tanur moved Phrae, Thailand where he taught and tutored English to 400 local 5th and 6th grade students from surrounding villages. He wrote nearly everyday in Thailand regularly publishing themes of his learning in his widely read Student Of the World Blog. He infused his blog with what he learned about himself and the world through teaching in Thailand, volunteering on an organic farm in Cambodia, trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp, sitting for a 5-day silent meditation course, and his month-long yoga teacher training certification course in Rishikesh, India. Just over one year after moving Tanur found himself much happier and whole. He decided not to renew his teaching contract opting instead to choose an indefinite period of vagabonding and couch-surfing Southeast Asia, the U.S. and Canada through family, friends, and followers from the U.S. and Canada. This period lasted for 15 months. It was in this period that Tanur created, launched, and began hosting his People of Purpose podcast in October of 2017. He felt compelled to go beyond himself to begin a project that shares the stories and wisdom of all the wonderful purposeful people he had met throughout his personal journey into purpose. People of Purpose features guests who live with a high degree of intentionality, are leading communities for positive change, and are treading a path that is very authentic to their passions and purpose. The podcast constantly inspires him and those listening to better align intentions with actions to live a more fulfilling and inspired life. In its first year the podcast has featured 30+ guests and 40+ total episodes. People of Purpose (PoP) has expanded to now include a regular newsletter where Tanur shares what takeaways on what he's been experiencing and thinking about to grow in his purpose and how they can be applied to your life too. The podcast has now added a private coaching practice called Path to Purpose. Tanur expects a fully-interactive, comprehensive online course will be made available in 2019 that draws from the practices he's learned from his guests and his personal path of purpose. In July of 2018 after 15 months of traveling, teaching online, and finding odd jobs Tanur moved to San Francisco, California. He is completing an accelerated one-year Master's of Education program and teaching credential as a full-time student and 7th grade social studies co-teacher at an urban, public- charter school in San Francisco. He is driven by the purpose he can express through through each of his endeavors and projects and the consistency of learning and challenge that helps him grow in his purpose which is "to be a conduit of God's love by accepting everything he is, opening himself to learning challenges through difference, and using his gifts to live purposefully in order to help others find their purpose and fulfill their potential." Key Points from the Episode with Tanur Badgley: Intentionality and purpose are the key themes to both this interview and Tanur's life journey. Tanur talks about decisions to experience via immersion so you get full-in rather than dipping your toes into things is how you can really grow. We talked about the intersection of immersion and introspection. When Tanur was 19, he, his younger brother and father spent part of their summer hiking and climbing in Yosemite National Park. His brother took a route off the path, which landed him stuck unable to get down from where he had gotten as many of the rocks he used to climb up had loosened and fallen out. Tanur went to try to help him, and ended up stranded on a small ledge with his brother. He tried to go for a ledge above them, grabbed hold and started to make it up until rocks let go under his hand as he was one grab from the top, sending him spinning head over heals over and over again as he tumbled down over 100 feet. He landed on his butt, but had hit his head multiple times, and finally stopped in the waterfall they were climbing by. While the wiser choice would have been to stay on the ledge and wait for search and rescue, he chose a bolder path which ended up being the foolish path. Tanur soon passed out from his injuries and head trauma while his brother was still stuck on the ledge. Their father finally made it to the top via a safer route and then saw what happened and quickly went to get help, which took seven hours and took them into night time. He remembers moments of consciousness where he was frustrated that the help was focused on him while he brother was still in danger. Tanur saw himself as being as hurt as he could possibly be while his brother could fall off the ledge. He had whiplash, a concussion and fractures in his cervical spine as well as deep tissue injuries to his butt – all of which he still deals with today. Somehow, in the moments after the fall, he felt a lot of peace. He made it, he was still there, and he was overall ok, which gave him a sense of not squandering his opportunity in life. To get to a point of not squandering opportunity, he needed to know his purpose in life, and sought to learn more. Of course, that needed to wait slightly while he recovered from the damage to his body and brain, and was totally reliant on his father to care for him for several weeks and even more as he worked on the injury to his brain. Three years later, Tanur found himself in a similar situation – he got another concussion while playing basketball. He was angry and it was impacting his decisions and behavior, so it wasn't surprising to him that he ended up in a situation where he would get hurt. He had lost his grandmother, broken up with his girlfriend, and was in a sales job he did not like, which just meant things were boiling up inside of him, and because his life wasn't aligned with what he cares about, he wasn't making progress in dealing with everything. With the space from all of it that his doctor's note excusing him from work for a month due to his concussion, he dug into the self-work to face the pain and anger. Through his work, he focused on how to live a life that wasn't for someone else but was for his own interests. He dropped everything and decided to move to Thailand to become an English teacher, meditate and live in a more peaceful way. He also used the time to finally move forward from his last relationship. We hit on the irony of how bad relationships can be harder to get over than the good ones. He is clear that he wouldn't be where he is today if not for the travel but even for the concussions. He finds himself thankful for both of those experiences. His work as a teacher showed him how it is the most proactive force for good. It's about saving lives before they go down a bad path, if you see it that way. He sees it as requiring you to be a role model and a constant life-long learner who builds up themself to keep growing. It's about connecting with people as more than just a transaction but a true relationship. Tanur talked about a very interesting struggle to fit in the box of society enough to actually fit into the world while also being removed from the game of it enough to be able to be fine if it all goes away or trouble befalls you.
