Are you a fan of any team sports? Perhaps you have already watched one of the NBA games, or maybe a 90-minute football game in FIFA. What do you think makes a champion team? Is it the “superstar” players? Or have you been part of a sports team, a school club, a group project, or volunteer work? Do you remember what it felt like working with a team? The saying “two is better than one” perfectly describes what it means to be in a group. Working together with your peers makes the work more efficient and effective. To top that, collaborating with other individuals gives you different perspectives and ideas that you might never think of yourself. But have you ever wondered how teams effectively work in organizations with thousands of employees?  In this episode of People of Purpose, Tanur Badgley had the chance to sit with Leo Bottary, the founder and managing partner of Peernovation, LLC. Leo is the award-winning author of three books, including Peernovation: What Peer Advisory Groups Can Teach Us About Building High Performing Teams (2020). He is also a keynote speaker, workshop facilitator, podcaster, Rutgers University adjunct professor, and CEOWORLD Magazine Advisory Board Member and Opinion Columnist. This is the final episode of the show! After 128 episodes, I have decided to practice that I preach, and make the tough call on priorities and pressures in my life, which means this show will be setting with the sun today. Whether that's forever or for now is not relevant because "forever" is not happening today. With all the demands on my time, I have been facing my own burnout – something I've had as a central theme in many episodes in this show. To protect and love myself, I've taken an inventory of all the things that I am committed to, where they are in the grand scheme of building toward my goals, whether they've served their purpose, and how I might be able to move forward without them. Though it was a hard decision I've grappled with for several months, ending the show here made a lot of sense. Do a Day is not going anywhere, however, with all the resources at your fingertips, as ever. You can still get the book in paperback, Kindle, Audible, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook and more. You can still do the Do a Day Masterclass, or sign up for 1-on-1 coaching with me. And the entire back catalog of episodes of the show will still be available for you to go back, listen to, and grow from. With all the stories and inspiration in the 127 episodes that I've released before this final one, I know there is at least one spark that every person in the world could use to start the flame that lets you Go Out and Do It! Respect for all my past guests: Season 1 I kicked the show off sharing the story of Do a Day. Charlie Gilkey shares about how being smart makes you strong. Evan Ruggiero reminds us through his cancer batter that rising up even when half of your world vanishes is possible. Amy Schuber taught us that you are the inspiration you seek. Ryan Caligiuri shared his mantra that there are no set backs, only set ups for what's next. One of my favorite artists, MC YOGI, talked about how all things grow in darkness Anne Sugar shared her battle with cancer as a way to see how you can trust your body even when it betrays you. Chris Wirth hit on his message of never quitting on living the life you deserve. David Ralph reminded us about the power in our lives if we connect the dots. Claude Silver shared her story (for the first time) of why she is who she is today and how that's showed her the importance of Heart in leadership. Elizabeth McCourt talked about the empowerment we can take from building our own resilience. Josh LaJaunie shared his story of overcoming extreme obesity--not just for himself, but for the world around him. Michael Nulty talked about his multiple suicide attempts and how he found rebirth out of depression. Mark Metry shared the importance of taking responsibility for your life and what you can achieve as a new person. My good friend, Aaron Keith Hawkins, talked about how we need to have influence over ourselves if we want to influence anyone else. Kelsey Abbott helped us Find Our Awesome through self-confidence and curiosity. She also gave me a quote I've used almost daily, "What you I say is about me. What you hear is about you." Dorie Clark reminds us of the important of perseverance and consistency if we want to achieve our greatest goals. Sonya Looney, world female mountain bike endurance champion, was just awesome, but had a key message around vulnerability and honesty with ourselves. She also gave me another gem of an idea around being stuck. Rather than being negative about the feeling, she recognizes it's a sign of something big being about to happen. Tim Fargo talked about the humility and balance we can find in unexpected places like failure. The amazing Dr. Jason Brooks shared the importance of being dedicated to finding your purpose and its transformative power on our lives. Jen Arnold shared her story around food and her weight and how that inspired her to change how we look at wellness and knowing ourselves. Lee Havern shared how he overcome depression and recognized the interconnectedness between mental and physical wellness. Emmitt Muckles left us charged up and recognizing that prosperity has nothing to do with money. Terri Levine, who lives in extreme, debilitating pain, showed how you can still find power and heart and use that to create something. Leigh Martinuzzi talked about finding his hidden Why and what that can unlock. The great Dick Vitale shared a power packed message of inspiration and making the choice to get up and move forward no matter what hits you, as he's done throughout his life. Season 2 Steve Gordon showed how falling down may be necessary to reach new heights Robb Holman talked about the power of letting go so we can find meaning and purpose Lindsey Heiserman inspired us to not let our past stories be part of our right now Charise Colbert shared her journey coming out of domestic abuse Sara Quiriconi talked to us about how to live free of all the cancers in our life Syd Finkelstein on how to be a Super Boss leader Ariana Robinson Danquah shared how to rise up when you're stuck in the middle Jon DeWaal gripped us with his story of falling off a roof and how that helped him see how to get through life's toughest transitions John Zeratsky talked about what he discovered to achieve the most, and it has nothing to do with productivity Josh Perry taught the power of gratitude even in the face of life's greatest challenges if you want to come through them thriving Mark Crandall shared his trauma story to help us see how facing our trauma's allows for growth Adam Schaeuble got us all fired up, and he also inspired with his approach to reimagining your life – and making it come true Sandy Vo talked about her journey to find clarity and peace despite a foundation of turmoil Cornell Thomas is the epitome of the "What's Next?" attitude winning over the "Why Me?" mentality Sandra Younger taught us her Come Back approach to be a victor, not a victim of tragedy Jenn Swanson talked about her journey off loss, gratitude and realization that you are your best investment Howard Jacobson shared how losing his father inspired his mission to fight diseases of ignorance with the wisdom of lifestyle Brooke Siem retold her amazing journey navigating her way out of a life of medication for mental illness into a life of discovery Tanur Badgley showed how to become a person of purpose through his journey starting with a fall off the side of a mountain Gary Bertwistle talked about the power of authenticity and discovering your mojo Frank King went into how thoughts of suicide taught him to go after what he really wanted, and why so many people need support as they face moments that lead them to these thoughts Mary Shores talked about the power of serving others as she went from dented to thriving Nick Elvery shared his journey from addiction to peak performance and what sparked the change Jaime Jay got vulnerable as he retold his story of multiple experiences with homelessness to being in a place of gratitude and contentment Dai Manuel talked about the importance of living as you need to, from your own perspective Blaire Palmer showed how the greatest thing we can bet on is ourselves Season 3 Dov Baron forced us to look at what's really going on, magnifying it, and then using that insight to truly grow Episode 056. Transporting From Darkness to Your Future Vision with Sarah Centrella Episode 057. Listen in this interview as I reflect on the different stages and challenges in my journey of purpose the day after my Thai fiance received her visa to the U.S.   In this interview I was in Bangkok and interviewed by my valued friend Nikita Yatchenko while he was visiting family in Moscow. I think our interview captured so many of the challenges people who are on purposeful paths are facing. Topics like staying true to the goals you’ve made to yourself as you and your circumstances change - pursuing money within purpose - maintaining self care while having an enormous amount of responsibility. These are each so important to develop a stance toward and have a proactive plan in place for how you will handle all the shifts that come when pursuing a personally purposeful path. Bryan Falchuk was a guest of People of Purpose on episode 015. He came into my life by serendipity on his 80 something podcast interview. His story of losing more than 100 pounds and overcoming the pain of his wife's battle with cancer is inspirational. Today he runs marathons and inspires people to live a better life every day through his book, Ted Talks, and now his podcast Do a Day. He asked me to be a guest on his podcast to share my story of how I used my rock bottom experience nearly dying after a major fall at Yosemite National Park to live a life more alive and purpose driven. Below is his writeup:  "After suffering many injuries and a major concussion when he fell off the side of a mountain, Tanur was forced to relook at the idea of purpose, the choices we make to relearn life, and how to actually live it.  Tanur had me on his show a while ago, and I was blown away by the depth of his soul and his humanness, and knew I had to have him on my show one day. Let's just say I wasn't let down." Tanur Badgley is a school teacher, blogger, and host of his own podcast, People of Purpose. Fascinated with understanding the unique gifts he's been given and how he is shaped into a higher purpose when he chooses to live with full appreciation of these gifts. At age 19, during the summer break after his freshman year of college, Tanur was hiking in Yosemite National park with his father and younger brother. When his younger brother decided to venture off the beaten path and got stuck, Tanur found himself on a small ledge with no safe way down. Tanur ended up barrel rolling down the mountain, and sustained multiple injuries, but miraculously none of them were fatal.  Three years later, Tanur finished college without a plan or purpose. he found himself working a soulless corporate sales job, battling depression, and suffering from a second concussion. He finally found his path and purpose in 2015 when he packed up and moved to Phrae, Thailand to become an English teacher to 400 5th and 6th graders. During this time he kept up his blog, Student of the World, with information he found out about himself and the world through teaching, volunteering on a organic farm in Cambodia, trekking to Mt. Everest Bas Camp, sitting for a 5-day meditation course, and his month-long yoga teacher training certification course in Rishikesh, India.   One year later, Tanur felt happy and whole with his new life style, so he decided not to renew his teaching contract, opting instead to vagabond and couch-surf across Southeast Asia, the U.S., and Canada through family and friends. During this time, Tanur started his podcast, People of Purpose, in October of 2017 because he felt compelled to go beyond himself and begin a project that shares the stories and wisdom of all the purposeful people he met along the way. People of Purpose features guests who live with a high degree of intentionality, are leading communities toward positive change, and are treading a path that is very authentic to their passions and purpose. People of Purpose has expanded to now include a biweekly newsletter where Tanur shares what he's been experiencing and dwelling on to grow in his purpose and how they can be applied to your life as well.  After 15 months of odd jobs and moving around, Tanur finally moved to San Francisco in July of 2018 where he's working on getting his Masters of Education in one year through an accelerated program and teaches 7th grade at a urban, public-charter school in San Francisco. Tanur is driven by the purpose he can express through each of his endeavors and projects and the consistency of learning and challenging that helps him grow into his purpose which is "to be a conduit of God's love by accepting everything He is, opening himself to learning challenges through difference, and using his gifts to live, purposefully, in order to help others find their purposes and fulfill their potential." You can follow Tanur on his journey through Facebook and Instagram at @peopleofpurposepodast Bryan has been so generous to grant me republishing rights so we could share this with the People of Purpose audience.  Listen as we talk about:  How intentionality and purpose are the key themes to both this interview and Tanur's life journey  How Tanur chose the more risky choice while on the ledge with his brother, and it turned out to be the more foolish choice.   How Tanur was frustrated with the rescue team because they focused their help on him, while his brother was still on the ledge and in danger.  How he got his second concussion while he was angry because he was on the wrong life path and letting it effecting his day to day.  How Tanur got to focus on himself while healing from his head injury and it helped him define his purpose and how to live for his own interests.  How he dropped everything in America and moved to Thailand to pursue a more peaceful life.  How he used the time and the new perspective to move forward from his last relationship.  How Tanur is positive that he wouldn't be where he is now if not for the travel or the concussions.   How his teaching job has allowed him to see that teaching is the most proactive force for good.  How difficult walking the line between being in the world, but not of the world is for him.          Sign up or hear more about our Path to Purpose course via peopleofpurposepodcast@gmail.com   Join our purpose seeking podcast community at...   Facebook   Instagram   YouTube Channel   Facebook Group - Purpose Seekers     Sign up for the Monthly Newsletter by emailing: peopleofpurposepodcast@gmail.com   Help More Find Their Purpose by Donating to the Podcast

Tanur Badgley is a school teacher, blogger, and host of the People of Purpose podcast. He is fascinated with understanding the unique gifts he has been given and how he is shaped into a higher purpose when he chooses to live with full appreciation of those gifts. He believes we all have these gifts and can use them to unlock our infinite potential through pursuing our purpose. Tanur started his own path to purpose after a near-death experience falling at Yosemite National Park at the age of 19. Three years later he finished out college without a plan or a purpose to pursue. He found himself working a soulless corporate sales job, battling with depression from a devastating breakup, and eventually lying a dark room in the cold Minnesota winter after suffering his second major concussion. After three weeks of healing in the dark and two months of rehabilitation, Tanur was able to learn how to truly listen to from  his heart. During his work disability, he put in motion everything he needed to move to Thailand. and become a teacher.  In September of 2015 Tanur moved Phrae, Thailand where he taught and tutored English to 400 local 5th and 6th grade students from surrounding villages. He wrote nearly everyday in Thailand regularly publishing themes of his learning in his widely read Student Of the World Blog. He infused his blog with what he learned about himself and the world through teaching in Thailand, volunteering on an organic farm in Cambodia, trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp, sitting for a 5-day silent meditation course, and his month-long yoga teacher training certification course in Rishikesh, India. Just over one year after moving Tanur found himself much happier and whole. He decided not to renew his teaching contract opting instead to choose an indefinite period of vagabonding and couch-surfing Southeast Asia, the U.S. and Canada through family, friends, and followers from the U.S. and Canada. This period lasted for 15 months. It was in this period that Tanur created, launched, and began hosting his People of Purpose podcast in October of 2017.  He felt compelled to go beyond himself to begin a project that shares the stories and wisdom of all the wonderful purposeful people he had met throughout his personal journey into purpose. People of Purpose features guests who live with a high degree of intentionality, are leading communities for positive change, and are treading a path that is very authentic to their passions and purpose. The podcast constantly inspires him and those listening to better align intentions with actions to live a more fulfilling and inspired life. In its first year the podcast has featured 30+ guests and 40+ total episodes. People of Purpose (PoP) has expanded to now include a regular newsletter where Tanur shares what takeaways on what he's been experiencing and thinking about to grow in his purpose and how they can be applied to your life too. The podcast has now added a private coaching practice called Path to Purpose. Tanur expects a fully-interactive, comprehensive online course will be made available in 2019 that draws from the practices he's learned from his guests and his personal path of purpose. In July of 2018 after 15 months of traveling, teaching online, and finding odd jobs Tanur moved to San Francisco, California. He is completing an accelerated one-year Master's of Education program and teaching credential as a full-time student and 7th grade social studies co-teacher at an urban, public- charter school in San Francisco. He is driven by the purpose he can express through through each of his endeavors and projects and the consistency of learning and challenge that helps him grow in his purpose which is "to be a conduit of God's love by accepting everything he is, opening himself to learning challenges through difference, and using his gifts to live purposefully in order to help others find their purpose and fulfill their potential." Key Points from the Episode with Tanur Badgley: Intentionality and purpose are the key themes to both this interview and Tanur's life journey. Tanur talks about decisions to experience via immersion so you get full-in rather than dipping your toes into things is how you can really grow. We talked about the intersection of immersion and introspection. When Tanur was 19, he, his younger brother and father spent part of their summer hiking and climbing in Yosemite National Park. His brother took a route off the path, which landed him stuck unable to get down from where he had gotten as many of the rocks he used to climb up had loosened and fallen out. Tanur went to try to help him, and ended up stranded on a small ledge with his brother. He tried to go for a ledge above them, grabbed hold and started to make it up until rocks let go under his hand as he was one grab from the top, sending him spinning head over heals over and over again as he tumbled down over 100 feet. He landed on his butt, but had hit his head multiple times, and finally stopped in the waterfall they were climbing by. While the wiser choice would have been to stay on the ledge and wait for search and rescue, he chose a bolder path which ended up being the foolish path. Tanur soon passed out from his injuries and head trauma while his brother was still stuck on the ledge. Their father finally made it to the top via a safer route and then saw what happened and quickly went to get help, which took seven hours and took them into night time. He remembers moments of consciousness where he was frustrated that the help was focused on him while he brother was still in danger. Tanur saw himself as being as hurt as he could possibly be while his brother could fall off the ledge. He had whiplash, a concussion and fractures in his cervical spine as well as deep tissue injuries to his butt – all of which he still deals with today. Somehow, in the moments after the fall, he felt a lot of peace. He made it, he was still there, and he was overall ok, which gave him a sense of not squandering his opportunity in life. To get to a point of not squandering opportunity, he needed to know his purpose in life, and sought to learn more. Of course, that needed to wait slightly while he recovered from the damage to his body and brain, and was totally reliant on his father to care for him for several weeks and even more as he worked on the injury to his brain. Three years later, Tanur found himself in a similar situation – he got another concussion while playing basketball. He was angry and it was impacting his decisions and behavior, so it wasn't surprising to him that he ended up in a situation where he would get hurt. He had lost his grandmother, broken up with his girlfriend, and was in a sales job he did not like, which just meant things were boiling up inside of him, and because his life wasn't aligned with what he cares about, he wasn't making progress in dealing with everything. With the space from all of it that his doctor's note excusing him from work for a month due to his concussion, he dug into the self-work to face the pain and anger. Through his work, he focused on how to live a life that wasn't for someone else but was for his own interests. He dropped everything and decided to move to Thailand to become an English teacher, meditate and live in a more peaceful way. He also used the time to finally move forward from his last relationship. We hit on the irony of how bad relationships can be harder to get over than the good ones. He is clear that he wouldn't be where he is today if not for the travel but even for the concussions. He finds himself thankful for both of those experiences. His work as a teacher showed him how it is the most proactive force for good. It's about saving lives before they go down a bad path, if you see it that way. He sees it as requiring you to be a role model and a constant life-long learner who builds up themself to keep growing. It's about connecting with people as more than just a transaction but a true relationship. Tanur talked about a very interesting struggle to fit in the box of society enough to actually fit into the world while also being removed from the game of it enough to be able to be fine if it all goes away or trouble befalls you. Today’s podcast episode is a new kind of episode. It’s actually a podcast episode that I’m republishing from my friends' podcast - Catching Z’s: The Millennials Guide to Mindfulness. The guest in this episode is me, Tanur Badgley. In my first ever guest appearance on a podcast my friend, mentor, and podcasting accountability partner Nick Zolfo and I really broke down my 10-day Vipassana meditation course the day after I completed my course in Thailand. For those of you that don’t know, Vipassana is a technique developed by Gotama the Buddha 2500 years ago. The word Vipassana means seeing things as they really are. Vipassana is about removing the root of your impurities through self observation and mastery of the mind with the goal of happiness and liberation from suffering.     I decided to ask for permission to publish our episode directly into People of Purpose. Not because of this feat that I genuinely am proud to have accomplished, but because I hope it nudges you to do a course yourself. I think one mark of my success after leaving the course is if I can do my part to get the people I love and respect and wish the best to do a ten day course of their own!          ------------Reccommended Resources:--------------       My Teacher S.N. The tables have turned and your host has become the guest! I figured it was time listeners got to know their host better. I've been hearing a lot of intrigue from episode 000 in which I introduced my story and my purpose.  If you wanted to know what I'm doing with my life, what experiences have shaped me, and ways in which I think you can seek and find your purpose this is your episode. For today's episode I asked my good friend Austin Schauer to interview me. Austin has a unique combination of being seriously-minded, but also hilarious and able to add a lighthearted touch to deeper conversation. I think he does an excellent job at asking good questions and drawing out substantive answers. Another reason I asked Austin to host this episode is because we share many common experiences. Austin and I both grew up in Topeka, Kansas and were even born in the same hospital. We were in a middle school rock band together,  went to the same high school, and did policy debate together. We also have both taught in Thailand.  Austin actually just arrived back from Thailand. It was a treat to catchup for the first time in a few years back in our hometown. I admire Austin's enthusiasm for life and his faith in following his unique path. After graduating from the University of Kansas, he got his Master's degree in English from the University of Oregon. He is planning to move to LA soon to write sketch comedy. I'm so thankful for all the preparation Austin put into preparing for and delivering this episode. Please enjoy this episode with your host Tanur Badgley.   Resources Mentioned:-------------- Letters to a Young Poet - Rainer Maria Rilke Yes Man - Danny Wallace  The Tim Ferriss Show Designing your Life - Bill Burnett and Dave Evans KIPP charter schools   Join our purpose seeking podcast community at...   https://www.facebook.com/peopleofpurposepodcast/   https://www.instagram.com/peopleofpurposepodcast/   https://www.facebook.com/groups/370599930049519/?source_id=146822282503735
