Over the last nearly 100 episodes of Security Breach we've discussed a wide range of strategies for protecting the manufacturing enterprise. But perhaps the most polarizing of these has been Zero Trust. While some unwaveringly champion the cause of this approach, others question the ways in which it is typically deployed. Perhaps this dichotomy is best represented in Palo Alto and ABI Research's The State of OT Security report. It found that 93 percent of those surveyed were familiar with Zero Trust, and 87 percent found the approach to be the right fit for protecting OT environments. However, half of those participating in the research also stated that there are practical blockers that prohibit implementation. In the end, like most things in the cybersecurity world, the answer lies in striking a balance between restricting access and implementing safeguards against time-consuming processes. Our guest on this week's episode is Don Hicks, CEO of Optilogic. We saw during the pandemic how badly our ports were jammed with all of the many imported goods we needed and wanted to keep us happy while stuck in our homes. The congestion had eased a bit in the past year or so, but now things are beginning to jam up again. What's causing that congestion? Our guest has some answers as well as advice on how to deal with these new problems.  Software giant Microsoft Corp. and the German supply chain management and e-commerce solution provider Arvato  plan to team up to develop plans for what they call a “self-managing warehouse of the future.” They call this the “Moonshot” research project, and say it will be powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and cloud computing.Shipments of autonomous industrial lift trucks are expected to double from 2024 to 2025 in North America and Europe, driven by a declining industrial workforce and related demand for automated and tech-connected equipment. That's according to data from global technology research firm ABI Research, which was released earlier this month. Many companies across a variety of industries are now testing and validating private wireless technology through proof of concepts and field trials to understand its benefits. Nokia, in conjunction with ABI Research, recently conducted a survey of more than 1,000 senior executives in organizations across manufacturing segments including automotive, machinery, metal fabrication, electronics, consumer goods, chemical and oil and gas.  More than 90% said they were considering 4G/5G as part of their mission-critical, control, and communications network upgrades, while 38% said they would use 4G/5G as their primary technology supporting mission-critical operations.    Is there widespread commercial deployment yet? There is clearly considerable interest across many manufacturing sectors. As well as field trials, some manufacturers have driven ahead with commercial deployments. However, the adoption process is still at a very early stage.  One reason is that manufacturers typically have a long factory asset lifecycle, which by definition makes the adoption of new technology a slow process. Also, manufacturers are under constant pressure to keep up with demand and production schedules. Introducing downtime by implementing new technology is not an option.  It must also be remembered that 5G is an emerging technology designed specifically around industrial applications. Many of the features and functionality that manufacturers want still lie in the future – such as time-sensitive networking, high-accuracy location and positioning, and 5G industrial IoT.  There will also be a delay while standards are defined, and while chipset manufacturers produce the silicon for these features and functionality, which then has to be integrated into the relevant machines. All this means that it may be a while before we see widespread adoption.  What will the benefits of private networks be for manufacturing? The adoption of private wireless networking, together with edge computing, will be a foundational next-generation infrastructure that will enable manufacturers to become more productive and flexible.  It will deliver the ability to upgrade processes that existing technologies use, such as machines being tethered to an ethernet cable, or wireless systems that work only with a certain type of technology, such as Bluetooth or LoRa.  LTE/5G private networks are poised to harmonize and simplify future network operations for manufacturers. They will also enable the deployment of more automation, such as mobile robots that can increase the speed and throughput of material handling. Such networks facilitate the use of HD video for inspection for quality control, which brings reduced waste and increased output that help to meet sustainability goals.  One of the most important benefits is in the area of worker safety, which is of primary importance to manufacturers. Equipping teams with personal protective gear fitted with wireless sensing devices, for example, means supervisors can be alerted to a hazardous situation such as a gas leak.  Examples of Nokia enabling industrial sites to deploy private wireless Butachimie, an operator with a chemical plant in France. It wanted to reduce production costs and simplify its overall manufacturing processes. In partnership with Orange Business Services, Nokia deployed a private 4G wireless network solution that supported systems such as closed-caption TV, push-to-talk, push-to-video, and industrial IoT sensing. Arcelik, a multi-national appliance manufacturer, where Nokia participated in the deployment of Turkey's first 5G-ready private wireless network at a washing machine manufacturer. Alibaba, the largest retail e-commerce company in the world, for which Nokia deployed a private wireless network in a 30,000-square-meter warehouse connecting more than 100 automatic guided vehicles that delivered a sizeable increase in efficiency.  Five tips for a manufacturer considering the deployment of cellular infrastructure Do not delay in starting this journey. With the world situation unstable, there are persuasive reasons to hold off deployment – but there may never be an ideal time to get under way. Start with a few use cases where improvement is most urgently needed.  Define your KPIs for success – and make sure you get buy-in from IT and OT within your organization. All your teams will have to be on board to enable successful adoption. Select use cases that have achievable results within a relatively short space of time – ideally, in less than 12 months. For example, replacing a legacy Tetra voice network with an LTE network that supports video and high-speed data rates can deliver tangible benefits almost immediately. Add some industrial IoT sensors to existing machines and processes that are experiencing higher than expected down times. By combining the data generated with that produced by the machines already, you should improve your condition-based monitoring and be able to roll out predictive maintenance programs.  After your initial success, you can graduate to more advanced use cases such as the introduction of autonomous mobile robots to improve overall efficiencies.   Above all, your deployment journey does not have to be undertaken alone. There is a burgeoning ecosystem of partners with the technical knowledge and expertise that will work to understand your business needs – trust them with your digital transformation process.

Telcos must adapt to avoid being squeezed out of the burgeoning network-as-a-service (NaaS) market, claims a new report. According to ABI Research, the NaaS market is primed for growth. It expects that by 2030, nearly 90 percent of global enterprises will have migrated at least 25 percent of their network infrastructure to be consumed within a NaaS model. The growth is being fuelled by increasing enterprise demand for cloud-native agility, multi-cloud accessibility, and services that can dynamically scale to support digital transformation. This demand, the analyst firm reckons, means the NaaS market could be worth as much as $150 billion by 2030. Telcos, provided they are in a position to capitalise, could snag up to $75 billion of that sum. “Telcos must seize the opportunity to dominate the NaaS market, as revenue generated from connectivity provision will continue to decline. However, their investment strategy, business, operational, and ‘go-to-market' models are not ready to deliver a competitive NaaS solution,” said Reece Hayden, distributed and edge computing analyst at ABI Research, in a statement on Tuesday. “The market is immature and highly fragmented, but telco market revenue will exceed $75 billion by 2030 if they act now and transform technology, culture, and structure to better align with the requirements of the NaaS market.” When Hayden refers to technology, he means telcos should virtualise their network infrastructure to offer cloud-native services. They should also focus investments on network automation, and roll out value-added services like 5G slice-as-a-service, for example. In terms of culture, ABI said telcos need to develop vertical-specific sales strategies and adopt a consultative process to help bridge the gap between enterprises' awareness of NaaS, and their understanding of it. “To drive short-run sales, suppliers must educate and tailor their sales strategy to focus on first adopters – start-ups and SMEs – and specific verticals,” Hayden said. Finally when it comes to structure, ABI recommends telcos reduce internal fragmentation, focus on cross-business service continuity, and establish strong partnerships across the industry. “Although it seems like an expensive and risky uphill battle, developing NaaS will be crucial to the long-term upside,” Hayden said. And if telcos don't get their collective act together, interconnection providers and hyperscalers will be only too happy to fill the void. ABI notes that the likes of cloud connectivity providers Megaport and Packet Fabric already offer agile NaaS solutions, while Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure have extensive cloud-focused NaaS offerings and huge reach. “Telecom operators remain in the best position to lead the market as long as they recognise their service and innovation limitations, invest and restructure successfully, and focus their messaging appropriately,” Hayden said. However, “if telcos miss this opportunity and drop the ball, interconnection providers and hyperscalers will be waiting and willing to catch it.”

Cellular service providers are shutting down their 3G networks this year, a shift that could impact legacy wireless systems that some fleets are still using, some experts say. The 3G networks are being shuttered to free wireless spectrum for existing 4G LTE and still-expanding 5G networks. The move will support growth for systems, devices and applications that need more bandwidth for improved speed and latency. However, it will cause service issues for fleets using 3G-connected systems for equipment such as electronic logging devices. ABI Research on Feb. 14 released a report that estimated at least 350,000 Class 8 trucks nationwide will be affected by the overall shutdown of 3G networks.

Ransomware attacks draw headlines when they take down major operations: hospitals, cities and most recently, a US fuel pipeline. Not only do cybercriminals scam businesses demanding large sums of money or they'll wreak havoc on their computer systems, this week's gas shortages showed how it can also have broader impacts.But ransomware against individuals — specifically, anyone who uses the internet — can also be very damaging. Hackers can lock computers and threaten to delete or expose sensitive information and photos in exchange for money.The concept predates the widespread adoption of the internet. In the late 1980s, the inventor of ransomware attacked the attendees of the World Health Organization's international AIDS conference with infected floppy disks, asking for $189 to decrypt files on their computers. Nearly three decades later, the US Justice Department recently said 2020 was "the worst year to date for ransomware attacks." Security experts believe attacks against both corporations and individuals will only continue to grow because they're easy enough to execute and people are paying.Here's what to do if you've fallen victim and how to protect yourself.How it happensCriminal organizations behind ransomware attacks don't care if the victim is an individual or a business — they just want to get paid. Ransomware is often obtained through social engineering — an act of someone stealing personal data by using information gleaned from their social media account — phishing emails or getting someone to click on a link on a website. It's especially prevalent on pornography and pirate websites that promise free viewing. Ransomware kits are also sold on the dark web, a part of the internet not detected by search engines where cybercriminals often sell and buy illicit materials.Older computers running operating systems that are no longer supported by the manufacturer, such as Microsoft's Windows 7, and don't offer security updates are more susceptible, as well.Once the ransomware has been clicked, a hacker can gain access to that computer and demand a ransom to relinquish control. Because the system locks as soon as it's infected, it's not possible to negotiate with the criminal. Many times, hackers will urge people to pay with cryptocurrency, such as bitcoin, which can be received anonymously and is harder to trace.The biggest motivating factor behind these incidents is money, and sometimes a criminal will use fear tactics, such as threatening to publicly expose sensitive photos, to entice people to pay. "When criminals attack individual users, they often ask for small amounts of money, as they know most individuals can't or won't pay thousands of dollars to get their data back," said Randall Magiera, cybersecurity expert and professor of information technology at Tulane University.What to do if you've fallen victimThe FBI's general guidance is that victims should not pay a ransom. "The FBI does not support paying a ransom in response to a ransomware attack," according to the FBI website. "Paying a ransom doesn't guarantee you or your organization will get any data back. It also encourages perpetrators to target more victims and offers an incentive for others to get involved in this type of illegal activity."If a hacker gets a credit card number and goes on a shopping spree, a bank can often reverse the charges, but the use of cryptocurrency makes funds nearly impossible to get back. Some common malware infections can be reversed with existing cybersecurity tools but many cannot."Ransomware groups evolve their tactics generally when they see that cybersecurity tools can counter them," said Michela Menting, research director at ABI Research. Some security researchers have tools to decrypt ransomware, but they're not always reliable because many ransomware versions exist.People who are hit with ransomware should treat their computer as though it's compromised even after it's been unlocked. (together, “Tesla”) and Panasonic Corporation of North America and Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. (together, “Panasonic”) entered into a 2021 Pricing Agreement (Japan Cells) (the “Agreement”), effective as of October 1, 2020 until March 31, 2022, relating to the supply by Panasonic of lithium-ion battery cells manufactured by Panasonic in Japan. The Agreement is subject to the Supply Agreement between Tesla and Panasonic (and/or their respective affiliates) dated October 5, 2011, as amended, and sets forth, among other things, specific terms with respect to pricing, production capacity commitments, purchase volume commitments and planned investments over the term of the Agreement."     "Tesla (TSLA) has announced a new battery cell deal with Panasonic through an SEC filing today. It’s the latest of many recent moves from Tesla in an attempt to secure a large battery cell supply to support its ambitious expansion goals." writes Electrek: "Historically, the cells that Panasonic has been supplying Tesla with from Japan have been for the Model S and Model X programs. Recently, Panasonic disclosed that they were starting production of new battery cells with better performance for Tesla."   No indication which cells these are. Lots of speculation it means Panasonic are making the new 4680 form factor cells.  The Plaid edition will use those cells with no indication the other S/X models will change from 18650.   I say no to anyone else making the 4680 cells. So much of the IP will sit with Tesla. Although many compare Lucid to Tesla, Rawlinson called Lucid the first EV to compete with traditional luxury manufacturers such as Mercedes, BMW and Porsche. A week ago, it'd be easy to dismiss foldable smartphones as a trend that never became a full-on fad. After all, Samsung's Galaxy Fold model, at nearly $2,000, famously broke for early reviewers, and the newly-launched $1,500 Motorola RAZR flip phone -- twice the cost of an iPhone 11 -- touts mostly lacklustre features, including a small battery and plastic screen.But Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip phone, announced Tuesday at a press event in San Francisco, could be the device that breathes new life into the buzzy concept that borrows heavily from designs of the past.The 6.7-inch smartphone folds into a square about half its size, with a small rectangular display on the front cover for notifications. It comes in three colours — purple, black and gold — and goes on sale Friday February 14 in select stores and online.At $1,380, the Z Flip is far from affordable, but with a new, sturdier design and almost as much computing power as the Samsung flagship smartphone, the company could be onto something."After years of complacency in the smartphone market, waiting for some design innovation, there is little doubt that foldable smartphones are set to become the next technology innovation trend," said David McQueen, research director at tech advisory firm ABI Research. "Despite the obvious and immediate issues with getting them to market -- notably high barriers to entry, extreme hardware innovation, seamless user experiences and current eye-wateringly high prices -- foldable displays are set to become an important form factor in future product portfolios bringing much needed innovation into device design."Beyond the nostalgia factor, there's a lot of appeal in a phone that shrinks in size and shuts close. At a time when smartphones light up and scream for us to grab them with each notification, snapping the device down is a refreshing change. (Like the RAZR, the Z Flip features a small display on the front so you can still see notifications come through if closed.)Upon first impression, the Z Flip is the clear standout in the emerging foldable phone wars. Unlike the RAZR's plastic display, the Z Flip features a layer of ultra-thin glass that opens and snaps into place with ease. It packs a powerful processor and decent battery life and does most of what you'd expect from a smartphone these days. The Galaxy Z Flip stays true to its name by adopting the clamshell design typical of flip phones (the Galaxy Fold folded vertically outward, similar to a book).The change to the hinge here is critical: It now features a small, internal brush-like system to push out debris and opens and snaps into place with ease. (Samsung claims it can open up to 200,000 times without damage.)The downside of making the hinge horizontal, however, is a noticeable crease that resides in the centre of the display, where users are often swiping and opening apps; you can both see it and feel it. It's a reminder that manufacturers are still trying to figure out how to approach the design. It's rumoured that Apple could be working on a foldable concept, as well.But for now, it's hard to get over the price -- something that will likely pigeonhole it as a niche product. It's only $20 less than the high-end Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, which boasts 5G capabilities, a super responsive touchscreen and an incredibly powerful set of cameras. Considering the Flip Z's price is $600 less than the Galaxy Fold, it signals Samsung is trying to figure out its place in the market.Another key factor in determining the price is materials; the original Fold was basically two thin smartphones sandwiched on top of each other."This time it's one smartphone cut in half, so there are some price savings to be had," said Ramon Llamas, a director at research firm IDC. New research shows that the future of online retail is about augmented reality. According to ABI Research, AR is a useful tool for online shoppers who are unable to interact with the products they want to purchase. Retailers like Target are already adopting augmented reality into their online shopping experience. Target Beauty Studio is an app that lets you try on makeup via the power of AR. Nick Finill, senior analyst at ABI, notes that AR is not as viable for in store shoppers stating, “For consumers in brick-and-mortar stores, however, AR can disrupt the customer journey and provides little additional value overall.” Let's hope that ABI's predictions for the future of online retail become a reality.

Femtocells are just starting to be deployed in a broad range of applications with major network operators announcing rollouts in the USA, Europe and Asia.  They are basically small cellular base stations that people can put in their homes or businesses. They connect using a broadband connection (DSL, Cable, Fiber, etc) in the home or business. ABI Research forecasts that the total femtocell market in 2010 will reach 2.3 million units, and will exceed 45 million within five years. In this podcast we take a look at this emerging communications technology.Here's some of the questions we discuss and answer: What are femtocells? How many phones can they support? Are products currently available? Let’s pick one and dig a little deeper on the device features. How about AT&T since it is the newest offering. So, you need to have a broadband connection on the site in place? Why is there a GPS radio in a Femtocell device? What about Femtocell Quality of Service or QoS? Are the Sprint and Verizon products 3G like AT&T’s? What about pricing? Is there a monthly fee? So, we had talked about the problem Mark was having with lack of cellular signal in his home and office. Would one of these in his home and another in his business solve his problem?
