In today’s episode, we are delving into the hot topic of Digital Vaccine Passports and Certificates. We outline the complex mix of technology, privacy and practical issues in a global context. As we did in Episodes 24 & 25, we look at the significant practical, technical and privacy issues surrounding how nation states and governments want to use technology to prove human beings can travel internationally, cross borders in the EU and get access to domestic venues, events, retail outlets and much more besides. We consider the lack of effectiveness of the Track and Trace apps in the UK & EU and wonder how acceptable solutions can be found for Vaccine Passports and Certificates - a wider problem involving citizens, businesses, medical records and often new and emerging technology. Again, we find ourselves asking the same question: how do we find a rapid and effective way to discuss and agree the extended use of our data to manage this pandemic and halt the damage from lockdowns? We urgently need a forum to be able to have these discussions. As if our lighting community needs more disruption, we are poised for a radical change in how we make, distribute and sell our products. We have experienced two digital revolutions already in communication and computation. We can communicate instantly across the globe at no charge and computers are integrated into our lives. Digital fabrication is the third digital revolution. When we can make our own lighting sources, heat sinks, optics and luminaires in our garage or locally at a store with a larger 3D printer (3D Kinkos?) then business as usual is over. Container loads from Asia, our sales and distribution network and other peripheral support processes cease when costs equalize though local 3D printing. This will happen incrementally at first then accelerate to exponential growth as we experienced with communication and computation. The revolution has already begun with choices of 3D printers available on Amazon Prime for under $200. The Lighting Research Center has expanded their LED Lighting Institute to include content on 3D printing. Nadarajah Narendran, Ph.D. is the Director of Research at the LRC and is the Professor teaching a hands-on 3D lighting class. He has been leading a team that conducts research and educational programs to accelerate the development and market transformation of lighting technologies. The seminar culminates with participants designing, building and evaluating their own lighting fixtures including custom 3D printed components. Femtocells are just starting to be deployed in a broad range of applications with major network operators announcing rollouts in the USA, Europe and Asia.  They are basically small cellular base stations that people can put in their homes or businesses. They connect using a broadband connection (DSL, Cable, Fiber, etc) in the home or business. ABI Research forecasts that the total femtocell market in 2010 will reach 2.3 million units, and will exceed 45 million within five years. In this podcast we take a look at this emerging communications technology.Here's some of the questions we discuss and answer: What are femtocells? How many phones can they support? Are products currently available? Let’s pick one and dig a little deeper on the device features. How about AT&T since it is the newest offering. So, you need to have a broadband connection on the site in place? Why is there a GPS radio in a Femtocell device? What about Femtocell Quality of Service or QoS? Are the Sprint and Verizon products 3G like AT&T’s? What about pricing? Is there a monthly fee? So, we had talked about the problem Mark was having with lack of cellular signal in his home and office. Would one of these in his home and another in his business solve his problem?
