Now that Election Day 2024 is in the rearview mirror, what did we learn? Amanda Tyler and Holly Hollman look at the results and what they might mean for our country and the protection of faith freedom for all. They discuss where we saw religion used on the campaign trail, what we might expect to see in the next four years under a second Trump administration, and ways all of us can make a significant difference in local communities.   SHOW NOTES Segment 1 (starting at 00:37): Did Americans vote for authoritarianism when they voted for Trump? Holly mentioned being in Georgia after the elections for BJC's Walter B. and Kay W. Shurden Lectures on Religious Liberty and Separation of Church and State. You can learn more about the presentations from Dr. John Compton during that event, focused on the politics of secularization, on our website at BJConline.org/ShurdenLectures. Amanda mentioned her current book tour for How to End Christian Nationalism. Her last stop in 2024 will be in Richmond, Va., this weekend, but she will be back on the road in 2025. Visit EndChristianNationalism.com for details and ways to order the book.   Segment 2 (starting at 13:42): Where did we see religion and Christian nationalism in the closing days of the campaign and its aftermath?  Click this link to watch remarks from President-elect Donald Trump on election night, and click this link to watch Vice President Kamala Harris' concession speech on election night, both via C-SPAN. For more on the January 6 attack on the Capitol, read the report itiled “Christian Nationalism and the January 6, 2021, Insurrection,” created by BJC and the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Amanda sent an email to the BJC community after the election. You can read it on Baptist News Global: This is the time for our movement to meet the moment If you want to receive emails from BJC, you can sign up on our website: BJConline.org/subscribe Amanda mentioned being in Austin, Texas, on Monday to testify against the troubling Bible-infused curriculum proposed for Texas public schools. For the latest, read this article by Troy Closson for The New York Times: Texas Education Board Backs Curriculum With Lessons Drawn From Bible. Amanada and Holly discussed the issues with this curriculum in episode 2 of season 6: Oklahoma and Texas try to force Bible teaching in public schools.  We want to hear from you! If you want to connect us with an organization doing good work in your community, contact Joy Pettigrew, BJC's community partnership manager, at jpettigrew@BJConline.org. An organization does not need to be devoted to countering Christian nationalism, even if that might be the outcome of the work they are doing.  If you are in North Texas and want to get involved in the North Texas Organizing Project, contact Lisa Jacob at ljacob@BJConline.org.    Segment 3 (starting 32:51): Good news about school voucher initiatives Don Byrd wrote an article for BJC's website about the rejection of school vouchers in Kentucky, Nebraska, and Colorado: Voters soundly reject school voucher initiatives in multiple states For more discussion on the problems with school vouchers, listen to episode 8 and episode 9 of season 5. Respecting Religion is made possible by BJC's generous donors. You can support these conversations with a gift to BJC.

Harrisburg photo/journalist' Amanda Mustard's grandfather was a pedophile. Chiropractor Dr. William Flickinger preyed on young girls, including his daughter and granddaughter – Amanda's sister. Mustard has made a critically acclaimed documentary called Great Photo, Lovely Life, that can be described as compelling, one-of-a-kind and hard to watch at the same time. In the film, Mustard confronts her grandfather and explores a complicated family dynamic. Her grandfather shows little or no contrition for his actions and says he will be forgiven by God. Appearing on The Spark Thursday, Mustard talked about why she made the documentary,"I feel like I almost didn't have a choice because the more that I learned about the kind of pain and damage that my grandfather caused, I really didn't want to continue the silence. So as hard as this has been -- it took over eight years -- I just felt like I couldn't put it down because I just wanted to do better moving forward with my generation." Watch the trailer here. [caption id="attachment_244279" align="alignleft" width="697"] Amanda Mustard and her mother sorting letters to be sent to potential victims of her grandfather's sexual abuse[/caption] In the film, Mustard and her mother confronted Flickinger calmly rather than with anger. He answers matter of factly, shows little remorse and says that over the years, little girls kind of threw themselves at him and they liked it (the sexual abuse),"I don't think that he was particularly interested in in offering an apology. And also he was never really given a reason in his life to he didn't face many consequences. He didn't really have a reason to feel particularly bad about it. But I do think that's why I'm led to think that there was some psychopathy at play where he's just kind of there's some there's some screws loose for sure." Mustard added,"I think he's again very warped, very, very warped. You're going down there in this kind of quote unquote confrontation. I was approaching this with two hats. I'm a family member that was raised to normalize this. And this film has been a process of me normalizing myself to this, because that's unfortunately the nature of these things. And also, you know, I do have journalistic training and I was approaching him with that. So, I kind of did my best Louis Theroux impression and approached with curiosity. I knew him well enough that anger and screaming and yelling wasn't going to get any anywhere, it wasn't going to get me any answers that I wanted. Approaching him the way that I did is why he was so open. So, yeah, it can it's jarring, I think, for people who have not been in the situation and know how kind of complex and uncomfortable and contradictory generational trauma is and having a perpetrator in your family." Great Photo, Lovely Life will be screened at Midtown Cinema in Harrisburg Sunday afternoon at 1:30 and Tuesday night at 7:30. It also is on HBO Max this month. On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show: Nashville edition, we are joined by singer/songwriter's Amanda Kate and Riley Braker!AMANDA KATEBorn in a no-stop-light-town in Red River, NM, Amanda Kate Ferris grew up equally inspired by her small-town upbringing and her mother, Kathy Wright, an artist and entertainer herself. As one of the original “Dean Martin Golddiggers” on the 1960's TV show, 18-year-old Kathy often collaborated with The Rat Pack's crooners, embracing the era's glamour. The apple didn't fall far from the tree, and young Amanda was singing as early as two years old. Inspired by her mother's tales of performing on the stage and screen, she developed her own voice in the church. Amanda added songwriting to her repertoire at age 14, looking again to follow in her mother's footsteps as a full-time musician and artist. During her mother's long sets at Honky Tonks between California, New Mexico, and Texas, Amanda fell in love with the music of The Judds, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill, Leanne Womack, and Brooks & Dunn, all of which heavily influenced her current sound.  Her love of Country music led her to chase her dreams in Nashville. Over the next few years, she went through multiple groups, opportunities, and countless hours spent on her craft in Music City. On the brink of letting these long sought-after dreams go, Amanda decided that she needed a change of pace and settled in with her family. After she and her husband welcomed their first child, Amanda was back on stage, this time performing Carrie Underwood songs in a national touring cover band, Blown Away. Their incredible renditions of Underwood's hits led to an unsolicited and highly coveted spot on Executive Producer Jimmy Fallon's new show for E!, “Clash of the Cover Bands.” Through Underwood's iconic songs, Amanda was able to fulfill her love of entertaining and singing, but she felt a calling to again create her own original music.  The show was a full circle moment for Ferris, appearing on the same network that gave her mother her start over 50 years ago. Off-screen, this allowed Amanda the opportunity to highlight her new original music, simultaneously releasing her self-titled EP to rave reviews, including editorial placement on Spotify's Texas Country Now, the largest Red Dirt Playlist. In early 2022, Ferris' love for traditional Country sparked the interest of renowned producer Jimmy Ritchey (Clay Walker, Mark Chesnutt), with whom she recorded five new tracks reminiscent of the traditional country stylings of Ferris' favorites from the 90s. Look out this fall for “Baby Don't,” Ferris' debut on Texas radio. “Baby Don't” honors her Texas Country roots and showcases her captivating vocals. This lead single will be followed by an EP in early 2023 to reflect upon her western influences and love of Country music history. A cowgirl at heart, she spends any free time riding her horses with her family at Rockin R Ranch in Palmer, TX.  On the road, Amanda has graced the stage with such acts as Tracey Lawrence, Bailey Zimmerman, Deana Carter, Warren Zeiders, Chase Rice, Priscilla Block, Casey Donahew, Josh Abbott Band, and more.  RILEY BRAKERRiley is a gifted singer-songwriter, with a voice tailor made to tell her heartfelt stories of life as a young adult. She crafts her tales of love, woe, and regret, and infuses her characters with so much life, the listener feels as if they are experiencing the events first handy

Maintain Your Perspective: 3:15: Remember, don't make rash decisions based on fear. If you're looking to be afraid, you'll find it, if you're looking for opportunity, you'll find that as well. 5:25: People are going to keep living. You just have to look at it from a daily, weekly or monthly basis. 8:33: Hal Elrod's book, Miracle Morning, is a great book for those looking for perspective. 12:43: Depression is anti-people and anti-movement. So, to reverse the effects of depression, you've got to get around people. You've got to start moving. Strategy for This Time Period: 14:10: For now, we're not buying new rentals. We're not trying to catch a falling knife before it hits the floor. We simply just don't know where the floor is just yet, so we're being ultra conservative. 16:17: Refinance! Amanada scored a 3.125% refinance on her personal property from 4%. That's huge savings over 30 years. 18:23: Now's a great time to learn how to find your own deals. We're shifting our marketing to C class or lower since we believe those properties will always be in demand. 21:45: If you don't know what to do, go out to those people who are still buying. Cash Reserves: 23:52: It's difficult to build cash reserves during a crisis or recession. But look into the transactional side of investing to build that up. Wholesaling or wholetailing if you can. Our Way of Business is Shifting Slightly: 25:40: We're reducing the 75% rule to be conservative. We're using DocuSign and ShowMojo. 29:30: We still need to maintain properties and get them leased. Designer Amanda Lindroth joined us all the way from the Bahamas to chat with us about her home collection, book, her interior design work, and all of the joys (and difficulties) of decorating homes in your favorite vacation spots. We even talk about the Dunmore Hotel where she used our upholstery pieces. You'll be shocked to hear all that goes into maintaining this beautiful property! What You’ll Hear on This Episode: Trials of towels hanging on display where they don’t need to be, soapy stoves, crazy sinks and backordered rugs. Triumphs over a beautiful blue outdoor rug, sink and special chair finds. Amanda would have been a designer sooner if she knew that was a viable option! Amanda grew up living in a house with perfect mathematical scale, and that taught her about proportion right off the bat. What it was like for Amanda to grow up in South Florida in the 1970’s, and how it influenced her design now in the Bahamas. What people look for when decorating on an island home and resort. Warning — this will make you want to go on vacation ASAP! Amanada was intentional with learning about color, and studied it in a serious and motivated fashion. Why Amanda loves a pink wall, and it can be a neutral to go with everything. Why decorating for people’s second and third homes can often be easier, but they still may get sticker shock when it comes to tax and duties of the island! How Amanda navigates doing business in so many locations, and having a team all over the world. Setting a tone for using timeless antiques with a modern and contemporary touch. The places to spend money and really invest in great quality pieces, and what areas we can super glue it all together. Amanda’s thrift shop mentality suites life in the Bahamas well, and it’s not easy to replace things so she pays attention to every single thing she brings in and how she can reuse and recycle. Amanda’s book, Island Hopping, that takes us everywhere from Antigua to Cranberry Island. What we can expect next from the Amanda Lindroth product line, including lighting in early 2010.

CONTENT WARNING This episode contains frank discussion of abortion. Political commentary will not be tolerated. This episode was such an interesting one to edit and listen to because abortion is not something I have dealt with. However, I know that many women have and on Sh-t You Need to Know, I like to include perspectives from all sorts of people. Amanda and I have a great conversation how why she decided to abort, how it has affected her life now, and what she wishes people would know about her decision. We also talk about how to talk to people about abortion, very #meta, I know. Amanda Kingsley is a life coach that aims to show women their superpowers. But before all that, she attended midwifery school and practiced as a doula for 3 years! Amanada has been committed to women's health and health issues since day 1, and uses her experiences to help guide women through their feelings surrounding abortion. https://www.amandastarkingsley.com/ CONTACT ME / FOLLOW ME ON THE MEDIAS: instagram: http://www.instagram.com/realmarthariley email: martha@shityouneedtoknow.com call/text me: (301) 941-7448
