I share some updates and some talks I'm giving soon, along with the recording I took of when I was practicing my talk for the Matrescence Festival, organised by Claire Tonti and Lizzy Humber. In the talk I share about where the ‘perfect mother myth' often starts in our own lives, what it is, how it connects to the broader ‘tank' of motherhood that we're all ‘swimming' around in, and how mothering can be a catalyst for our own growth and development. In 1958, the group was formed by Tacoma, Washington residents Don Wilson (rhythm and lead guitar) and Bob Bogle (lead and bass guitar). They originally performed as the Impacts and the Versatones before finally settling on The Ventures. Nokie Edwards (lead guitar) joined in 1960 and they recorded their first big hit, a Chet Atkins cover entitled “Walk, Don't Run.” The Ventures lineup in the studio also included Skip Mooreon drums. In 1960, the song peaked at #2 on the Billboard's single chart amid stiff competition from Chubby Checker, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, and Bryan Hyland. Drummer Howie Johnson replaced Moore in 1960. Mel Taylor became The Ventures permanent drummer in 1962 until his passing in 1996. From 1960 through 1972, The Ventures consistently toured worldwide and charted 37 albums. Stormy Daniels. You may have heard the name. Especially if you've been a conscious, breathing being with ears over the last week, chances are pretty high! Well, four years ago, I was featured right next to Stormy in the opening Playbill of Playboy's Anniversary Issue dedicated to, of all things, freedom. I had a feature about women being free to break out of the "brains or beauty" boxes. She had a feature on the heels of speaking out about her affair with Trump about being free to break out of the "hero or whore" boxes the media put her in. Now, she's the center of Trump's unprecedented, explosive, and politicized potential indictment and arrest.... and here we are. Here's my view of it all that no one seems to get. Podcast Introduction: This episode includes William W. Tanner, the publisher of the Sons of Utah Pioneer's (SUP) magazine; Wayne Hinton, the organization's 2020 national president; and Thomas Alexander, the 2015 national president, all engaged in a discussion with Speak Your Piece host Brad Westwood, about this all-male Utah history organization: its origins, it's membership (today you do not need to be a desendent of a pioneer to join, nor do you need to be member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints); and its flagship history publication the Pioneer. Regarding the magazine, this graphically engaging magazine has been in production since 1995, and its January issue delves into Utah's campaign for statehood. The interview includes a lively discussion on the messy history of statehood. In the end each guest tells something they think most Utahns would not know about Utah's statehood story. To see the complete shownotes including brief biographies of Tanner, Hinton and Alexander go to: Speak Your Piece (Utah Dept. of Heritage & Arts)Origin Story of the Sons of Utah Pioneers: Proposed first in 1907 as "the Sons and Daughters of Utah Pioneers," this fledging organization expected both men and women to take part, urging all ancestors of Utah's pioneers, who arrived during Utah's earliest Euro-American settlement period (1847 to 1869) to join-in. Despite some very grand intentions, and inaugural conference that included LDS Church President Joseph F. Smith as its keynote speaker, the organization gradually stop functioning. Why? One reason was six year prior, in 1901, another Mormon pioneer organization, known as the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) had been founded. This organization quickly became a promoting force in “honoring Utah's Pioneers (inspired by the 1897 fiftieth anniversary pioneer jubilee celebration).” The Sons idea was eventually revived, this time in Provo in 1923. This gathering of “Provo men” became the BYU-based George Albert Smith Chapter, and serves today as the oldest chapter in the organization. In 1933 after a Provo SUP member, Lawrence T. Epperson settled in Salt Lake City, the organization came to the capitol city, and shortly thereafter expanded into a national and international organization. Here is the website for the SUP.Since the mid-1930s these two gender based, statewide history organizations (the SUP and DUP), have worked in parallel, and at times together, to honor, document and promote Utah's Mormon pioneers. To read Dr. Thomas Alexander's ten page history of the National Society of the Sons of Utah Pioneers click here.In celebration of Utah's 125th statehood anniversary the Utah Department of Heritage & Arts produced a half-an-hour program aired on January o4, 2021 Thrive125: A Utah Celebration. This is the last in a four episode series on Utah's statehood story. To listen to these other shows click here: Leo Lyman, Ken Cannon and Neylan McBaine.

You’ll also hear Rob and Vic interview Tiffany Stevens of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee on how she got there, what she does, and current issues concerning the JVC. Show Notes 00:45 Recap of Fashion Week and the jewelry trends and best jewelry so far. 07:42 Are the 90s coming back into fashion and what does it mean for jewelry? 09:10 Trade wars and tariffs on China, and how this affects the industry. 15:40 Overview of JCK’s print and digital plan for 2020, including change in magazine frequency. 17:50 JCK’s 150th Anniversary Issue—a print keepsake that will still have value. 19:10 Weird Story: A dairy farmer in Singapore proposed by putting a ring on a cow’s udder. 22:15 Rob Bates and Victoria Gomelsky interview Tiffany Stevens, President, CEO and General Counsel of JVC. 22:30 Tiffany covers her history and beginnings at JVC and what drew her to the jewelry industry. 24:44 Tiffany gives some background on JVC’s history, mission, and what they’re doing now. 27:20 Tiffany talks about how lab-grown diamonds affect the JVC mediation practice. 28:35 Rob asks Tiffany how consumers can get in touch with the JVC if they have an issue they want to bring to their attention. 29:45 Tiffany speaks on what the State Department asks of the industry regarding sourcing. 33:15 What you can do to show you’re compliant: filing suspicious activity reports. 39:00 Rob asks Tiffany how effective Anti-Money Laundering laws are in flagging things. 40:15 Tiffany speaks on the FTC guides and their aftereffects. Episode Credits Hosts: Rob Bates and Victoria Gomelsky Guest: Tiffany Stevens Editor: Levi Sharpe Producer & Engineer: Natalie Chomet Plugs: jckonline.com, @jckmagazine, jvclegal.org Show Recap Fashion Week Highlights Vic covers some of the best jewelry moments of the week, and some emerging trends that she has noticed. Some takeaways are a strong 60’s-70’s structural trend, especially from Marc Jacobs. These striking pieces show that fashion designers may be starting to acknowledge jewelry design and craft rather than adding jewelry as an afterthought. Ulla Johnson paired her outfits with pieces from Grainne Morton, a U.K. designer that does these sculptural earrings and necklaces with lots of dangling pieces. Another designer, Brandon Maxwell, paired denim outfits with colored stones and lots of chains. Vic has noticed chains as an emerging trend that will extend to 2020. Are The 90’s Making a Comeback? Vic and Rob notice that some 90’s styles are starting to make a comeback, and they speculate what it could mean for jewelry. Besides the Tin Cup pearl necklace, popularized by the movie it was named for, Vic can’t pinpoint any jewelry styles that were big in the 90’s, and characterizes it as a sad time for jewelry. She supposes that every time an era’s trends come back, they do so with a dash of the modern sprinkled in, which could bring some hope for jewelry trends moving forward. Trade Wars are Back 15% tariffs were put on products from China beginning on September 1st. Though many products were exempt, jewelry products were not among them. Though some large manufacturers say they are not affected, others are sorting through the chaos. Rob explains that it’s not as simple as not purchasing products from China. Many small parts, boxes, and other essential items are made in China. This adds up. New Print and Digital Plan for JCK JCK’s print frequency will change for 2020 from seven issues to four, keeping a spring, pre-show, at-show, and fall holiday preview issue. The focus will shift to digital, including the podcast, webinars, web coverage, and more. Though this is a change, it is in line with the rest of the industry. The upcoming 150th Anniversary issue is an example of a timeless print issue that may not translate to the web in the same way. JCK will keep its foot in print, while strengthening the already solid digital presence. Weird Story: A Moo-ving Proposal A farmer in Singapore proposes to his girlfriend by placing a diamond engagement ring on a cow’s udder, sparking incredulous reactions from a ring-shaming Facebook group, questions of animal cruelty, and a plethora of bovine-inspired puns. Interview: Tiffany Stevens JVC, founded in 1917, has covered a lot of issues over its history in tandem with whatever is going on in the jewelry industry. Its mission is to help all those along the supply chain with any compliance issues that they are experiencing. Tiffany covers new types of fraud that had been uncovered as the lab-grown diamond industry begins to grow. She advises on how consumers can get in touch with the JVC if they have an issue they want to bring to their attention. Tiffany speaks on what the State Department asks of the industry regarding sourcing. She also talks about AML laws as well as the FTC guides and much more.

Her disarming charm works its way into her acting technique." While Broadway World.com praises… "Brinkley is still beautiful and is a strong presence on stage. She fits the look of Roxie who is a wannabe glamour girl from the chorus. Brinkley brings a charm to the part that makes Roxie seem more ditzy than coldly calculating. So. A year. Amazing. Both in how long it seems, and how it seems like just last weekend I sat down and wondered "what's this podcast thing all about."I'd thought about a greatest hits episode, but in the end, with questions from the listeners waiting (very patiently) for answers, I went for new content. Hopefully that will be the theme of Year 2.The poem I read, Miniver Cheevey, can be found all over the Internet, but here's one place. My Facebook account, discussed on the show, is "Dashing Docteur." Hope to see you there. Here is the episode. And the kittens, well, here are the kittens:
