Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Indecision and internalized authority figures, published by Kaj Sotala on July 7, 2024 on LessWrong. A trauma book I was reading had an interesting claim that indecision is often because the person looks for the approval of an internalized authority figure (the writer is a Jungian therapist so attributed it to looking for the approval of an internalized parent, but I think it can be broader) but is unable to predict what action they would approve of. I feel like that has some intuitive truth to it, in that when I don't care about anyone's opinion (or if nobody ever finds out) then it's much easier to just pick one action and commit to it even if it might go badly. But one of the main reasons why I might struggle with that is if I fear that anyone would judge me for doing things incorrectly. Or it can be a conflict between different internalized authority figures. "If I do this then X will be angry at me but if I do the other thing, then Y will be angry at me". Or just the expectation that X will be angry at me no matter what I do. This also reminds me of the way I think a big part of the appeal of various ideologies and explicit decision-making systems is that they give people a clear external ruleset that tells them what to do. Then if things go wrong, people can always appeal (either explicitly or just inside their own mind) to having followed The Right Procedure and thus being free of blame. The most obvious external example of this is people within a bureaucracy following the rules to the letter and never deviating from them in order to avoid blame. Or more loosely, following what feels like the common wisdom - "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM". But those are examples of people trying to avoid blame from an existing, external authority. I think people also do a corresponding move to avoid blame from internalized authority figures - such as by trying to follow a formalized ethical rule system such as utilitarianism or deontology. Of course, if the system is one that easily drives people off a cliff when followed (e.g. extreme utilitarianism demanding infinite self-sacrifice), this isn't necessarily helpful. Now what was supposed to give relief from the pressures of constant inner judgment, turns into a seemingly-rigorous proof for why the person has to constantly sacrifice everything for the benefit of others. At one point I also wondered why it is that being very confident about what you say makes you very persuasive to many people. Why should it work that you can hack persuasiveness in that way, regardless of the truth value of what you're saying? Then I realized that extreme confidence signals social power since others haven't taken you down for saying clearly wrong things (even if you are saying clearly wrong things). And that means that siding with the person who's saying those things also shields others from social punishment: they're after all just doing what the socially powerful person does. And given that people often project their internalized authority figures into external people - e.g. maybe someone really is trying to avoid their father's judgment, but when seeing someone very confident they see that person as being their father - that allows them to avoid internalized blame as well. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org

If we accept an authority figure, does that mean we have to change? What if we don't want to change? What if we think we are doing pretty well just as we are? Maybe we need to look in the mirror and answer some tough questions about ourselves.

What can we all learn about ourselves and how to get what we need from hearing from those who are struggling to get what they deserve and are entitled to receive? Many of us struggle with asking for what we need. What happens when you aren't getting what you need from someone in a work position that is charged with providing that service to you? Although field supervisors are contractually obligated to provide supervision to students, they can sometimes fall short in their responsibility. What can we all learn about ourselves and how to get what we need from hearing from those who are struggling to get what they deserve and are entitled to receive?

Mark H. Harris, film critic and author of The Black Guy Dies First: Black Horror Cinema from Fodder to Oscar

The Cinematography Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2023 59:41

Mark Harris has enjoyed watching horror movies since the age of about 10 or 12. Growing up in the 1980's with so few Black characters on TV or in movies, he always noticed when there was a person of color onscreen. It stood out even more in horror, and the Black character would inevitably end up dead since they were never the main character. As an African American horror movie fan, he decided to start keeping track of the countless ways in which Black characters were killed. In 2005, Mark started the website Black Horror Movies, where he reviews the portrayal of Black characters in genre movies all the way back to the beginnings of cinema. Mark's website provided a lot of the background information he and co-author Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman needed for their book, The Black Guy Dies First: Black Horror Cinema from Fodder to Oscar. While the subject matter is serious, The Black Guy Dies First is a fun read, written with humor and insight. It includes lots of pop culture references, timelines, photos and concrete examples of Black representation in horror. Mark and Ben discuss many of the topics and issues raised in The Black Guy Dies First. Horror movies have always been seen as the ugly stepchild of Hollywood, and many people still think of horror as inconsequential. But this also allows horror movies to be transgressive, and push boundaries because the expectations for it to perform with mainstream audiences are low. Scary movies have a tendency to explore different avenues and reflect society's fears and anxieties. Race in America is one of the biggest touchstones as far as fear and anxiety, so it's valuable to analyze it as part of the horror genre. The trope of “the black guy dies first” is a history of how Black characters have been marginalized in movies. Since they are never the lead character, they are disposable. One of the exceptions, Night of The Living Dead, was ahead of its time, because it had a Black character in the lead. This made it an outlier in the history of black characters dying. Other cliches and stereotypes Mark sees that marginalize African Americans in horror are: The Best Friend, The Voice of Reason, The Authority Figure (such as a Black cop), The Sacrificial Negro (the character who somehow decides not to save themselves, even if they could), and The Magical Negro (who is just there to help the white main character, such as in The Shining.) Mark does see the horror genre finally changing for the better- Jordan Peele's Get Out was a runaway smash, which has allowed for more Black leads in horror movies and across all film genres. And he was genuinely surprised that Peele's NOPE got any kind of Oscar buzz in 2023 (though it did not receive any nominations.) Other recent films such as His House, Master, and Nanny actively explore the social issues and history of Black trauma. Mark agrees that the best way to increase diversity in front of the camera is to increase diversity behind the camera. When people of color are writing and directing, it empowers the development of strong characters and provides opportunities for diverse points of view. In Hollywood, there has always been the excuse that too many Black leads in a movie would make it a “Black movie” and therefore not appeal to all audiences or do well internationally. But now, a lot of blockbusters have people of color as the lead, which seems to prove that this attitude is changing. At the same time, it's important for filmmakers to not necessarily try to make the next Get Out- often, social commentary can feel wedged into the storytelling, when it didn't need to be. Mark feels that the key to Black horror is to show range in the storytelling, but it doesn't always have to be so serious. As a genre, horror is the most self-aware of its tropes and tendencies, so it is constantly challenging itself to change things up and find better ways to scare you. Dealing With Divorce When You're a Highly Sensitive PersonNearly 30% of us are highly sensitive people – or HSPs – and if you count yourself in that group, it makes divorce a materially different experience. Today on the show, we welcome Chris Lyon, a relationship author and facilitator. She is a coach, board certified hypnotist, certified in Applied Neuroscience and Brain Health and she's been helping people with relationships with themselves and others in her practice for 23 years. Chris talks with us about the challenges of going through a divorce when you're an HSP.Chris explains what HSPs are and why it's valuable for everyone to understand what it means to be one. The divorce process can be particularly challenging for HSPs, who tend to internalize and look at everything through only their perspective. She says it's a process of learning to move out of internal focus and into external focus – which could help before, during, and after divorce. That external focus could be shifted even by moving the conversation out of emotional thinking and into logical thinking, ie. focusing on the math side of things for a while. This helps get them out of their fear center. Chris talks about the importance of empathy with HSPs, which can be hard to come by, particularly when rejection is distorting their view. How do you find that empathy then? It can be a challenge, but it can take the HSP out of crisis immediately. We talk a bit about the difference between sympathy and cognitive empathy, or learning to understand what your ex wants. We also talk about why being defensive is the weakest position, and why therapy can be an incredibly valuable tool to help get through this difficult time. It's a wide-ranging conversation full of great information for everyone – not just HSPs. Upon reflection, I know the role my dysfunctional upbringing has played in my workplace experiences. This week's episode 205 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about the 24 ways adult child traits show up in the workplace!Support the show by becoming a Patreon member! In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I'm sharing a chapter of the ACA fellowship text, affectionately known as the “Big Red Book”. Chapter 14 is called “Taking Our Program to Work” and details how the traits of adult children of alcoholics and dysfunctional families show up in the workplace. The first 12 items of the “Working at the Laundromat” list are as follows:We confuse our boss or supervisor with our alcoholic parent(s) or qualifier and have similar relationship patterns, behaviors, and reactions that are carryovers from childhood. We confuse our co-workers with our siblings or our alcoholic parent(s) and repeat childhood reactions in those working relationships. We expect lavish praise and acknowledgment from our boss for our efforts on the job.Authority figures scare us and we feel afraid when we need to talk to them.We get a negative “gut reaction” when dealing with someone who has the physical characteristics or mannerisms of our alcoholic qualifier. We have felt isolated and different from everyone around us, but we don't know why.We lose our temper when things upset us rather than dealing with problems productively. We busy ourselves with our co-workers' jobs, often telling them how to do their work.We can get hurt feelings when co-workers do things socially together without asking us, even though we have not made an effort to get to know them and join in the social life.We are afraid to make the first move to get to know a co-worker better, thinking they will not like us or approve of us.We usually do not know how to ask for what we want or need on the job, even for little things. We do not know how to speak up for ourselves when someone has said or done something inappropriate. We try desperately to avoid face-to-face confrontations.Stay tuned for episode 206 where I share items 13-24 from the list! Be sure to tune in to all the episodes to receive tons of practical tips on living a more whole life and to hear even more about the points outlined above.Learn more about Fragmented to Whole at https://higherpowercc.com/podcast/ LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Ep. 194. Was there ever a time that an authority figure said something to you, and as a child, you took it as true? I'm thrilled to have Professor Jody Hironaka Juteau back today. She brings both a wealth of expertise as well as colorful personal anecdotes. Today, we invite you to bring some of these long-held beliefs forward and question whether or not they are serving you now. As children, we don't always have the ability to negate things that are said to us. Unfortunately, those comments can sometimes impact us greatly. The wonderful news is that you don't have to continue to hold these beliefs. What might your life hold if you were to let those old narratives go? Another beautiful aspect of querying into these spaces is that it can allow us to show up more thoughtfully in the lives of others too. Jody Hironaka-Juteau has over 20 years experience as a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS) working with children, teens, and adults in hospital and community-based settings. She has worked in the areas of physical medicine and rehabilitation, mental health, sensory impairment, and developmental disability. Currently professor of Recreation Administration at California State University, Fresno, Jody served as administrator in the College of Health and Human Services for over 9 years. She is recognized for her expertise and experience in the areas of diversity and inclusion training, collaboration, and higher education leadership. In her leisure time Jody enjoys spending time with family and friends, cycling, golfing, and playing the ukulele. Milestones to Manhood is a way for fathers to help connect with their sons through a Christian right of passage.  The book is a blueprint that specifically instructs a dad in how to do this for their 13-year-old sons.  The idea is for the boy to look back at that point in time where he became a man.  The book outlines the steps to take and how to do the specific events and can also be modified for any family. The book outlines specific steps that help make a father and son relationship stronger as well as giving the son other men in the family or mentors to look up to.  There is a beautiful element of surprise for the son in this right of passage that will take him out of his comfort zone. This can be done for sons of single moms as well by trusted mentors and men in the church.  It's important that these sons also have mentors to look up to and go to for advice.  There are 4 ways that separate men from women. 1. Physical Strength 2. Authority Figure 3. Men are called to be natural leaders, the head of household 4.
