Icons represent ideas that are bigger than themselves.Myths are stories that represent ideas that are bigger than themselves.Archetypes are symbols of recognizable patterns of behavior.Letters of the alphabet are symbols (graphemes) that represents sounds (phonemes,) just as notes on a sheet of music are symbols that represent sounds.A role model is a personal icon, an archetype that you have chosen to emulate. The human brain loves symbols and patterns. This is why we embrace icons, myths, and archetypes. When we recognize a pattern that has been stored in our subconscious, we call it intuition. When we hear a pattern that has been repeated too many times, we call it a predictable cliché.Icons, myths, and archetypes evolve with each new generation.I was born in the 12th year of the 18-year Baby Boom generation that began exactly 9 months and 10 minutes after the end of World War II.Marilyn Monroe was the iconic sex symbol. The Statue of Liberty, Yankee Stadium, Yellowstone, and Woodstock were America's iconic places. Rolls Royce, Cadillac, Corvette, Camaro and Mustang were iconic cars. Tetris, Pong, and Pac-Man were iconic video games. The mythic stories of Baby Boomers were mostly about combat. Sometimes we fought the Indians of the Old West. Sometimes we fought the Germans, or the Japanese. We fought the Establishment. We fought for justice. Or we fought just to stay alive. And we always won.Our definitive male archetype in these mythic stories was rugged, brave, independent, and honorable. John Wayne, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery.Baby Boomer female archetypes were smart, pretty, and strong; Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews, Sophia Loren.Lots of movies ended with a wedding. These societal forces shaped the birth cohort known as the Baby Boomers.Gen-X was shaped by an entirely different set of icons, myths, and archetypes.Millennials had icons, myths, and archetypes that were all their own, as well. The Gen-Z cohort believes it is their responsibility to straighten out everything that the Boomers and X-ers screwed up.Gen-Alpha is determined to make their own decisions and decide for themselves what they want to do. They will be the vanguard of the next “Me” generation.Fortunately, there are elemental beliefs that bind us all together. It is upon those beliefs that successful customer-bonding ad campaigns are built. Openly name these beliefs and they lose their magic. If you claim to possess them, no one will believe you.EXAMPLES: Never claim to be honest. Just say something that only an honest person would say. Never claim to be a perfectionist. Just do something that only a perfectionist would do. Don't tell people that you are an author or a podcaster. Just give them a copy of your book. Invite them to be on your podcast. If you would win the hearts and minds of tomorrow's customers, this is what you must do:Imagine that you are standing face-to-face with three perfect customers and they are each looking into your eyes. The first one says, “Talk is cheap. Don't tell me what you believe. Show me.”The second customer says, “Tell me a true story that lets me know who you really are, including the price that you pay for being you.”Customer three says, “If you betray me after I have given you my trust, I will burn you down so hot that grass won't grow for 100 years.”Now you understand cancel culture. Frustration created it, and social media fuels it.People are looking for someone who really is...

Why Misogyny May Be America's Most Dangerous Ideology: The Role of the Manosphere in Political Assassinations and Mass Shootings

In a week dominated by the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, Cynthia Miller-Idriss' insights as the founding director of American University's Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL) are particularly valuable. Her new book about what she identifies as “the new misogyny and the rise of violent extremism” is entitled Man Up. But its message might be summarized as Man Down in its attempt to temper the violent fringes of what she calls the manosphere. Miller-Idriss, one of America's leading researchers on violent extremism, argues that misogyny is the cause of today's troubling rise of political assassinations and mass shootings. Her research across seven countries reveals that hostile sexism ranks among the top three predictors of support for political violence. She traces a disturbing pipeline from seemingly innocuous self-help searches by lonely young men to radicalization by influencers who blend fitness advice with violent scapegoating of women and minorities. Miller-Idriss documents how 60% of mass shooters have histories of domestic violence, yet this connection rarely appears in media coverage when targets aren't explicitly gendered. Her work suggests that what she calls "the law enforcement arm of patriarchy" is crucial in preventing both left and right-wing political violence that has reached levels unseen since the 1970s. 1. Misogyny is a Cross-Ideological Predictor of Violence Hostile sexism ranks among the top three predictors of support for political violence across seven countries, appearing in both left-wing and right-wing extremism. This suggests misogyny functions as a mobilizing force that transcends traditional political boundaries.2. The Domestic Violence-Mass Shooting Connection is Underreported 60% of mass shooters have documented histories of domestic and intimate partner violence, yet this pattern rarely receives attention in media coverage when the eventual targets aren't explicitly women. This represents a missed opportunity for early intervention and threat assessment.3. Generation Z Shows Unprecedented Acceptance of Political Violence While 93% of Baby Boomers believe political violence is never acceptable, only 42% of Generation Z holds this view. This generational shift reflects young people's loss of faith in political solutions and their perception that "there is no political solution" to major issues.4. Online Self-Help Searches Create Radicalization Pipelines Innocent searches by lonely young men for fitness, dating, or financial advice often lead to influencers who mix legitimate self-improvement content with violent scapegoating of women, feminists, and minorities, creating pathways to extremism.5. Community-Based Early Warning Systems Could Prevent Violence Nearly every mass shooter makes plans and leaks intentions to someone beforehand, but communities lack accessible resources for reporting concerning behavior that falls short of immediate FBI involvement. Mobile advisory centers, like those used in Germany, could fill this gap.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. On this week's episode, host Ted Asregadoo sits down with two of his biggest Billy Joel fan friends, Jeff Giles and Jason Hare, to discuss the recent HBO documentary, And So It Goes. Jeff is the founder of Popdose, host of The Record Player podcast, and creator of the new site Harmonic, while Jason is also a co-founder of Popdose and an avid triathlete. Ted, who was once a DJ imprisoned by the monotony of adult contemporary radio, has a complicated relationship with Joel's music. Forced to play the same nine hit songs on repeat for 13 years, he now has an aversion to tunes like "Piano Man" and "Just the Way You Are." The conversation about the documentary leads to a much deeper discussion of Joel's albums, particularly his 1982 masterpiece, The Nylon Curtain. Both Ted and Jeff agree that this melancholy and often sad album is Joel's creative peak—a personal and generational biography of being a Baby Boomer. In contrast, Jason shares a more foundational love for Joel's music, recalling how hearing "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" as a kid was what inspired him to start taking piano lessons. Join the trio as they dissect the documentary, debate the brilliance of The Nylon Curtain, and explore Billy Joel's music. ______________________________________ This episode of Planet LP is sponsored by Steve Fox's Old School. The live CBJ Manufacturing Conference podcast brought together three leaders—Dawn Ealy, Steve Coleman, and Wendy Mihm-Herold—to map out strategies for addressing Iowa's looming workforce crisis. With 240,000 Baby Boomers set to retire by 2030, the conversation underscored the need for employers to proactively leverage automation, retain senior workers through flexible arrangements, and intentionally engage the next generation of Gen Z talent through workplace learning initiatives. This episode made clear that manufacturers cannot afford to choose one approach over another. Automation alone will not close the gap, nor will simply retaining retirees or hiring more Gen Z. Instead, success depends on a comprehensive, three-pronged strategy. The panel's message was unequivocal: all manufacturers must act now to invest in technology, people, and partnerships—or risk being left behind as the talent pipeline shrinks and demand continues to grow. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with our summer intern, Nathan Oyer, who's about to head back to Binghamton University. In this episode, you'll hear a candid introduction with Nathan about his experiences as a TAP intern, then we'll dive right into the training session Nathan led for our team. He shares his insights and research on what makes Gen Z tick, from their love of authentic marketing to the language and wellness trends driving their travel decisions. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why understanding the differences between generations is key when crafting messages and campaigns aimed at Gen Z versus Millennials, Gen X, or Boomers What makes Gen Z unique as consumers, including their desire for relatable, authentic, wellness-oriented experiences How language and slang can both help and hinder brands when communicating with Gen Z Why relatability, authenticity, and micro-influencers now matter more than celebrity endorsements when engaging with Gen Z audiences What role wellness plays in Gen Z's travel and purchasing decisions, and how destinations and brands can tap into this trend How Gen Z views and responds to cancel culture and why transparency and a willingness to learn from mistakes are so critical Bridging Generational Gaps in Tourism Marketing To market effectively, it's essential to understand the context and experiences that have shaped each generation. Nathan outlined a generational roadmap, from Baby Boomers who value face-to-face connections, paper mail, and research-driven marketing—all the way to Gen Z, born between 1995 and 2009. Unlike previous generations, Gen Z grew up with technology at their fingertips. They're digital natives, expect user-friendly web interactions, and are famous for their short attention spans. Where Millennials (born 1980–1994) might be drawn to nostalgia and Instagram, Gen Z's heart belongs to TikTok, Snapchat, and real-time, less-curated microcontent. Slang to Improve Storytelling One playful, but important, aspect discussed was slang. Gen Z's ever-evolving language isn't just about new words; it's a reflection of community, humor, and relatability. Nathan led the TAP team through some current favorites (like “NPC,” and “no cap”), but did share a word of caution that slang is tricky territory for brands. Using slang can humanize a brand and make content pop, but if brands try too hard or use trends after their expiration date, they risk coming across as “cringe” (Gen Z's word, not ours). Wellness, Sustainability, and Social Responsibility Wellness isn't just a trend for Gen Z, it's a lifestyle. They're proactive about their mental and physical health, seeking out travel experiences that contribute to self-care and well-being. When looking for ways to engage Gen Z travelers there are lots of opportunities around trips like spa retreats, vegan experiences and sustainable stays. To connect with Gen Z, brands have to blend strategy with sincerity: adopt the right language, stay up to date with trends, and continuously center authenticity and purpose. By their very nature, the metals, minerals and mining industries have often set the standard for jobs that are at once remote, dirty and dangerous, and as such are facing a particularly acute shortage of workers as Baby Boomers retire. But new cutting-edge technologies such as AI are poised to change that outlook, according to Derain Pillay, global vertical lead for the MM&M markets with Honeywell Process Solutions. Control's Keith Larson caught up with Derain at the company's recent Honeywell Users Group meeting in San Antonio to discuss how technology is reshaping how work gets done in this essential global industry.

What kinds of changes are you seeing from Gen Z and Millennial leaders? Workforce demographics are shifting these days, as more and more Baby Boomers retire, opening up higher-level management and leadership positions that Millennials and Gen Zers are rushing to fill. This wave of next-gen leaders is bringing a tide of change, ditching old ideas of professionalism and proving that bold and authentic is the new standard.Amanda Litman literally wrote the guidebook for this new and decidedly different generation of leaders. “When We're in Charge” explores why the old ways are fading out and the fresh approach to authenticity, professionalism, and clear communication is going to revolutionize the workplace. Listen to today's podcast... What does the makeup of your team look like? Are they mostly from the Baby Boomer or Generation X era? Do you have any Gen Y's or even Millennials working for you? For the first time in contemporary history, there are four generations in the workforce — Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z. With employees ranging in age from their late teens to their 70s, leaders must tailor their management styles to fit their multi-generational workforce, who work with different value sets and expectations of each other. This age difference can make it a bit more challenging for leaders to handle. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency!  Here are today's Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating our diverse workforce on Baby Boomer Recognition Day Don't confuse your teams by phrasing orders as suggestions: Boomer managers are often reluctant to give clear, direct, specific instructions. Although you really mean “Do it,” often we use phrases such as “You might want to consider…”, or “Have you thought about…” Gen Xers and New Millennials (Gen Yers) hear these as suggestions. They're caught off guard when you're later surprised to find out they didn't carry out your directive in they way that you intended. Talk with them about more than just work. Be a leader, not a friend: Knowing and being interested in your employees isn't the same as becoming their friends. What they're looking for is a role model, a mentor, and a leader—not a buddy. Reward good work quickly: Gen X and Y employees are used to instant feedback and gratification. Think knowledge exchange, not knowledge transfer. As technology changes, your younger generations have the upper hand and experience. Allow them to shine as they show others how to adapt. With 4 generations in the workplace, a strong leader can juggle these vastly different expectations, communication needs, and views about the workplace. We are in an unprecedented time right now where there are 5 different generations in the workforce. As a people leader, how can you effectively manage that wide spread of ages and background, keeping them motivated, engaged and productive? My all-star special guest today is author Dana Dillard and she's simplifying how to manage 5 different generations at work. From 18 to those in their 80s, here's the definitive source on how to manage anyone on your team by having a better understanding of what they've gone through (generationally) and how they view their work. Here's how.  My all-star special guest today is Dana Dillard and she's simplifying how to manage 5 different generations at work. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: First, she defines each of the 5 generations: their age ranges and distinct qualities typically found in each generation currently in the workforce. With 11,400 Baby Boomers retiring every single day in the US, she gives advice on succession planning for those who remain and career planning for those who exit. How each of the 5 generations prefer to give and receive effective communications and how often. What the very best ways are to reward and acknowledge the accomplishments of each of the 5 generations. When assigning projects, what you should keep in mind with each generational worker. …and ultimately, what you can do with this information to bring together the 5 generations at your organization. Q: Are you ready to learn how to manage 5 different generations at work? If yes, this one is for you. It's time to #DoTheThing! Sylvester Stallone's been in the ring for a lot of rounds. Even though he, a few years ago, hit the big 6-0 birthday, he was still doing Rocky - Rocky 6. It was called, "Rocky's final round." Sylvester Stallone is one of the millions of Baby Boomers who have hit a challenge for which some have not been prepared - aging. I was intrigued with what Stallone had to say about people he knows. He said, "You see billionaires who have everything, yet inside they're still the same lonely, insecure people." You think you've got it all figured out, but when you turn 60 or, you know, whatever age seems to make you feel like you're getting older, there's this little hole inside you. You realize you're always going to be somewhat half full...or are we. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Why We Can't Find Peace." I call the cycle so many of us go through in our life journey the "As Soon As" syndrome. I'll be happy, I'll be fulfilled as soon as I graduate, as soon as I get a good job, as soon as I get a better job, as soon as I'm going with someone, as soon as I'm married, as soon as I have kids, as soon as I'm not married, as soon as I can get a home, as soon as I retire; it just never ends. And "as soon as" never comes. It's one disappointing answer after another. Until, like Rocky's creator says, we just give up and accept "this little hole inside" us as being "unfillable." The ancient Jewish king Solomon knew that feeling. He was so wealthy and so powerful he was able to own or experience every "as soon as" that his heart could conceive: every purchase, every woman, every achievement, every pleasure. Here's his conclusion, recorded in his personal diary, the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible. I'm reading from chapter 1, beginning with verse 8, our word for today from the Word of God. He says: "The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing. What has been will be again, and what has been done will be done again. There is nothing new under the sun. I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind." Pretty sad, huh? And pretty much the human experience. But Solomon went on to diagnose why nothing and no one on earth can ever fill the hole in our heart. He said, "God has set eternity in the hearts of men. Remember your Creator in the days of your youth. Fear God and keep His commandments" (Ecclesiastes 3:11; 12:1, 13). What we've been looking for all our life is something that will last forever, because we've got this eternity thing in our heart. The hole in your heart can only be filled by something as big as all eternity. And that means only the God who made you can fill it. Not a religion about God, but God Himself, living in your heart. And that's impossible because of the choice we've made over and over again to do our life our way instead of God's way. God calls it sin and He says that our sins "have separated us" from our God. But He's also acted with unspeakable love to demolish this wall that keeps us from Him. And He says in His own words, "He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins" (1 John 4:10). Translation: I did the sinning; Jesus did the dying. Then three days later, He came back from His grave to prove that He and He alone can give us life that's eternal. For millions, the search for what goes in that hole in our heart has ended at the cross of Jesus Christ. In a transforming moment when you say to Him, "Jesus, the wrong person's been running my life. I resign. I'm holding onto You as my only hope because only You can remove the wall between me and my God. So, Jesus, I'm Yours." If you've never had that liberating, load-lifting, purpose-filling, hole-in-your-heart-filling experience with Jesus, let this be the day. In fact, if you go to our website you can find there a lot of wonderful information to be sure you belong to Him. It's ANewStory.com That hole inside you is so big only God can fill it. And at your invitation, He will - today.

Generation Z—born 1995 to 2010.7. Generation Alpha- born 2011 to 2021.-What are some of the factors that influence a generation?1. Culture – What are the cultural outputs of an era?  Who were the greatest music artists, the best actors / actresses, the best movies, the fashion icons.? All these aspects tell us a lot about what a generation stands for; what they cared about, and how they wanted to be seen.2. Social–  What are the social structures, especially the family and parenting styles, both have a huge effect on who we are. In the United States, family structures have evolved throughout the years: from the prevalent nuclear family that most Baby Boomers are familiar with to today's multi family structures that include nuclear, blended, multi-generational, and single parent households.3. Economy – Economic booms and busts always had a huge influence on attitudes, beliefs and behaviors of a generation. 4. Political – The political context is also a significant factor especially if it includes extreme events like wars or wild card events like terrorist attacks. Think Vietnam war for Baby Boomers, or September 11th for the Millennials. These events are not only  memorable but also play  a major role in how a generation views the government and its actions. Trust is another dimension we carefully consider in generational research.5. Technology –  Constantly evolving,  technology always puts its mark on a generation. It influences every aspect of our lives including communication, mobility, learning, and so on… each generation has a few major technologies that shape their behaviors and lifestyle.MY NEW NORM Podcast-Email: mynewnorm@email.comCommunity / MERCH: www.mynewnorm.shopFaceBook: @mynewnormInstagram: @mynewnorm_podcastmynewnorm.buzzsprout.com/ / YouTube.com/@mynewnorm
