Cook (fl. c. 1725 – c. 1760) was an English cookery book writer and innkeeper. In 1754 she published Professed Cookery, which went on to two further editions in her lifetime. Living in Hexham, Northumberland, in 1739–1740 Cook and her husband, John, became embroiled in a feud with a well-connected local landowner, Sir Lancelot Allgood, following an argument over an invoice the Cooks had issued. Although they were later exonerated, Allgood continued his attack on them, forcing them to leave their inn and move. Their finances suffered and John was imprisoned for non-payment of debts. To earn money, Cook wrote The New System of Cookery in 1753, which was reissued as Professed Cookery in 1754. In the work, in addition to a range of recipes, she included a poem and an "Essay upon the Lady's Art of Cookery". This was an attack on Allgood's half-sister Hannah Glasse, who had published a best-selling cookery book, The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy, in 1747.Further editions of Professed Cookery were published in 1755 and 1760; a revised edition, containing a selection of the recipes from the first edition, was published in 1936. In the first two editions of the work, Cook was stated as living in Newcastle upon Tyne; for the 1760 third edition, she was living in lodgings in Holborn, London. The second and third editions of Professed Cookery cover several areas, including a critical analysis of Glasse's work, traditional English recipes and an essay on household management that includes a biography of a friend and Cook's autobiography. Vampires, demons, and a trip to Hell—there's a lot to discover in author Jonathan Fortin's Lilitu series, and in this episode, he's sharing all the details about his recent release, “Bloody Caleb.” 22-year-old Caleb Schwartzenfeld is a vagrant violinist struggling to make ends meet in the cutthroat squalor of Victorian England. Armida hopes that second language learners might glean insight from her experiences on how to walk through their fears and insecurities in life by providing them with techniques that can help them manage their inner voice. Just last month, The U.S. Supreme Court handed a victory to Montgomery County parents who object, for religious reasons, to the school system's use of LGBTQ+ themed books in classrooms, saying parents should be allowed to opt their children out of such classes. Nesbitt's poems frequently deal with humorous, relatable situations that verge on the madcap. He is the author of numerous books of poetry for children, including Believe It or Not, My Brother Has a Monster (2015), The Biggest Burp Ever (2014), Kiss, Kiss Good Night  (2013), The Armpit of Doom: Funny Poems for Kids (2012), The Ultimate Top Secret Guide to Taking Over the World (2011), The Tighty-Whitey Spider (2010), Revenge of the Lunch Ladies (2007), Santa Got Stuck in the Chimney (2006), When the Teacher Isn't Looking: And Other Funny School Poems (2005), and The Aliens Have Landed at Our School! (2001), among many others. In addition to writing books, Nesbitt has also written lyrics for the group Eric Herman and the Invisible Band. His lyrics are included on the CDs What a Ride (2007), Snail's Pace (2007), Snow Day (2006), Monkey Business (2005), and The Kid in the Mirror (2003).Nesbitt's poems have appeared in hundreds of anthologies, magazines, and textbooks worldwide, and were included on the television show “Jack Hanna's Wildlife Adventures” and in the film “Life As We Know It.” Nesbitt is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.
