Their mission on the night of November 10, 2004, was to clear a block of 12 buildings, where it was thought six or more insurgents had taken shelter. A Bradley Fighting Vehicle was supposed to provide fire support, but a malfunction on its 25mm cannon meant the platoon would have to kill or capture the anti-Iraqi forces (AIF) without it. WHO CONTROLS THE 450,000 NATIONAL GUARDSMEN? Governor Abbott, Texas Governor, has sued the Biden Administration over the ability to punish guardsmen that did not want to take the COVID Vaccine. It set up a legal challenge about who controls the National Guard when not federalized. Law professor Jason Mazzone at the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign, discusses the case and the legal issues involved. This requires a discussion of the Constitution and Militia Clause.

Alwyn Cashe is an American hero from the Iraq War. After his Bradley Fighting Vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb, even though he escaped with minimal injuries, he went back to the burning vehicle seven times to pull his unconscious men to safety before they were consumed by the flames. As a result of his heroic efforts, he died from burns that covered most of his body. All of those burns he received because he risked his life to pull his men to safety. Alwyn is a true American hero. He cared more about saving the lives of others than his own. As Christians, we also need heroes we can admire. We need to know the stories of Christian heroes of the past so we can learn from the example of their lives. Join us as we learn how to follow Christian heroes of the past and how to be one in the present.

Guest - Christopher Adams  Chris is a US Army veteran who served 13 years on active duty as a communications specialist before being medically discharged in 2009. During his time on active duty, Chris deployed twice to Iraq. His first deployment was to Anbar Province in eastern Iraq from 2004-2005 and his second was to Baghdad during The Surge from 2006-2007. Email: christophernadams@ymail.com What You'll Get From Today's Show Chris tells us a little about his early life growing up and the circumstances that led him to joining the Army. Chris recalls some of his most vivid memories of going through basic training as a slightly older recruit and assignment to his Army career field as a communications specialist. Assigned to a mobile response unit in Washington D.C., you'll hear Chris' experience on the scene at the Pentagon in the days following the 9/11 attacks. Chris shares a little of what life was like for a soldier stationed in South Korea in the early 2000s with 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment (1/9IN), 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (2/2BCT). In what was probably a first, 2/2BCT, already forward deployed, was alerted and ordered to deploy from South Korea to Iraq. Chris recalls that period of shock and surprise of getting told the news. Chris relates some of his experiences with 1/9IN in Iraq's volatile Anbar Province during his unit's 2004-2005 combat deployment.  Fresh from his deployment to Iraq, Chris relates his journey straight to a new home in the United States at Fort Carson, Colorado. 1/9IN transforms from a heavy combined arms battalion with Abrams Tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles to a light reconnaissance squadron, now designated 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment (3/61CAV), equipped with only HMMWV (Humvee) trucks and heavy machine guns. Chris describes his experiences during the train up period with 3/61CAV in Colorado and then back to Iraq for what would eventually become a 15-month long deployment to eastern Baghdad in 2006 during The Surge. Chris shares some of his experiences from his second Iraq deployment, explaining how it was different from his previous deployment a year earlier.  Chris reflects back on his Army experiences, some of the strong friendships made, and his sometimes difficult transition back to civilian life after a medical discharge.    Resources Related to the Topics Discussed in Today's Episode 9/11 Inside the Pentagon. 04APR2003: Two weeks into the invasion of Iraq, SFC Paul Smith was found himself just outside Saddam International Airport tasked with setting up a hasty enemy prisoner of war detention area. His team found a triangular shaped courtyard that would do the trick and they set about checking for enemy soldiers in the area. One end of the courtyard had a metal gate and as soon as some of Smith's Soldiers neared the gate they noticed a substantial enemy force moving on their position. Fire erupted as they notified the rest of their team who were now running to take up defensive positions. Identifying upwards of 100 Iraqi soldiers, SFC Smith called on a nearby Bradley Fighting Vehicle to ram the gate and begin engaging targets. Three M113 Armored Personnel Carriers arrived and joined in the fight with their .50 caliber machine guns to support Smith and his men. Before long, one APC was hit wounding the crew of three. Running low on ammunition, the Bradley was forced to disengage in order to resupply away from the fight. The damaged APC now served as the only heavy machine gun to defend the position. With Iraqi fighters occupying and firing from a nearby tower, Smith's men now faced fire from at least three directions. Recognizing that a retreat could roll up the larger American position, SFC Smith manned the APC machine gun and directed the driver to position the vehicle so he could alternate fire between three enemy strongholds. From the tower to the gate to the walls and back, SFC Smith stood steady at his machine gun repelling an enemy force of over 100. As the battle ended, Smith's machine gun fell silent and he was found dead at his position having suffered thirteen separate bullet wounds in the engagement. SFC Paul Smith's actions allowed his team to hold on in the face of an overwhelming enemy force. His continuous machine gun fire stopped a strong enemy attack in their tracks and saved the lives of countless American Soldiers. For this, SFC Smith would be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

I have to take care of my boys.”’ After his Bradley Fighting Vehicle caught fire from a roadside bomb Cashe made good on that commitment when he saved 6 soldiers and an interpreter in 3 trips back to the BFV.  Cashe succumbed to the burn injuries he sustained during his rescue. Thunder Run: The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad by David ZucchinoThis selection serves as an introduction to this fine book. Purchase the book at your favorite book seller or Audible. Overview of the book. In one of the boldest gambles in modern military history, just three battalions and fewer than a thousand men launched a violent thrust of tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles into the heart of a city of 5 million people and, in three bloddy days of combat ended the Iraqi war. Thunder Run is the story of the surprise assault on Baghdad-one of the most decisive battle in American combat history-by the Spartan Brigade, the Second Brigade of the Third Infantry Division (Mechanized). More than just a rendering of a single battle, Thunder Run is a candid account of how soldiers respond under fire and stress and how human frailties are magnified in a war zone.

Look at the very feeling of the tension of warfare or the extreme version of anger or rage that sometimes is solidified in the form of a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Look at that closely. Look at the impulse to go to war with others or go to war with oneself. Find a way to observe that. Online of course at Craig Peterson dot com you can watch me by going to Craig Peterson dot com as well. You can see the video of today's show here me in the studio, doing it all by myself hitting all the buttons and moving things around. busy busy times. And we got these two articles here that I really, really wanted to get to right now. And so that's exactly what we are going to do. This is kind of interesting. If you have been watching what's been happening over in Syria, and you see that there are the US troops, Syrian troops, Turkish troops, and Russian troops. Okay, this is a very interesting problem. I'm going online right now as we're talking because I wanted to pull up this other article that I read this week. And let me see here. I think I can pull this up. I'm going to show you this picture over on over on the display. So always takes a second right. And I will pull it up, but Russia has a tank over in Syria right now. And they've had it there for a little bit. Okay. And Okay, here we go. Okay, I got a picture of the tank. Let me pull it up. Okay, so if you're watching this on video, you'll see the tank up there right now. But this is a remote control tank and if you look at it, I got I tell you it looks pretty substantial. It's got a pretty heavy gun on it. That's definitely bigger than I don't know might be a 20. Mike Mike definitely bigger than a 50 Cal. It's got looks like for larger tubes, which are probably for surface-to-air-missiles, and for smaller tubes in my BRP. Geez. But this is a picture of the robot tank that's been used by Russia over in Syria. And it was supposed to be leap forward for Russia. But it just plain old did not work. Well. It's had a lot of problems. It didn't fight well. And they revealed it and tested it. It's called a year on nine by the way, and it is remote controlled. They admitted that it didn't meet their requirements. Okay. It's modern Russian combat unmanned ground vehicles, UGV. They're not able to perform the assigned tasks in the classical types of combat operations. In other words, once it hit the ground in Syria, it just didn't work right for them. James, you know who James is right? That's the big military contractor review company that said the system had demonstrated high performance in an operational environment. But Russia came out with a statement that they just plain old didn't agree with it. And there are a lot of these that are in development right now. DARPA, which is our US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has been developing things like this tank, and also some armored vehicles that are operationally or what they're doing is they're calling these optionally ma'am like the Bradley Fighting Vehicle replacement. And Russia has been much more aggressive towards developing These UGV is unmanned ground vehicles than the US has. But it's interesting to look at, but they were an absolute failure. So now getting to this article that appeared in Ars Technica, this is a picture I'm holding up the article here to the camera. For those who want to see it. You can also see it at Craig Peterson dot com. But on October 18, they announced that there were four companies that have been selected to build the prototype light robot, robotic compact vehicles for the US Army. These are non-developmental prototypes. And what that means is they're based on existing technologies, and they need to be deployable immediately, you know, while it's gonna take a while to ramp up production, but it needs to be something that can be deployed very, very quickly. there we're calling it the robotic combat light vehicle to next-generation combat vehicle. We want these things to be manned or completely remote controlled. For companies that were chosen to develop these first prototypes RHDT Global Oshkosh defense QNQ and Textron. They've already got some combination ground vehicle robotic systems. It's going to be interesting. Textron is based on how one house rips RM five. Have you seen this thing, by the way, the rip saw em five, look it up online and do a search on doc go for the rip saw all one-word RIPSAWM five. These things are amazing. And by the way, one of them was used in fast and furious. Do you remember that thing? It had a just like a tank. It had tracks And it moved really, really fast and could go over almost anything. There was a TV show that kind of featured these guys how and how very cool stuff they've, they've also got backwards backwoods I should say, wheelchairs, so the people that are paraplegic or even in some cases quadriplegic, potentially, but paraplegic, and they had don't have use of their legs can go hiking in the woods because it's kind of a mini tank that they're sitting on top of how and how just amazing what they're doing. Textron is partnering with FLIR and of course they make sensors and cameras, infrared stuff, so it's going to be interesting to see what comes with that I'll kind of keep an eye on this one as well. Our Robo tank I do like this. This picture is obviously an artist rendering although, you know, obvious, right? It looks like it's a real tank sitting in the woods. The next thing time into this our next article, and this is about Microsoft. I think this one is the coolest hack also from Ars Technica this week. They're calling this their dream Walker. And it's a virtual reality system. And right now you have to wear Let me see, I'll pull this picture. Oh, I don't have this picture handy. But it's absolutely amazing. Because it's so huge. Okay, right now the guy has to wear this big backpack. He has to wear a special helmet. There are special transceivers on him but you know, watch this, this is going to end up being on a smartphone. In fact, the rumors are that the iPhone 11 that'll be coming out next year. They might not make it into the I mean the 12 the coming out next year, might not make it into the iPhone 12 might be the iPhone 13 unless they skip that number. They are Developing Apple's developing some very cool glasses that have full VR functions. So with this, the researchers and Microsoft have developed some with some VR, which is virtual reality technologies. And it lets you remain fully immersed in a virtual world while you're in public places traveling on foot. So think about this for a minute. If you're walking to work in this city, you can actually be involved in this virtual environment. While you are still, according to Microsoft safely navigating a given route in real-world environments such as a daily walk to work, while seeing themselves strolling a different VR world such as a city, they're choosing. Very, very cool. So this is in their research division. They actually have a prototype that is working, and this is something I think we could expect in the future. They're saying that any Potential obstacles the user encounters while traversing real space are recorded by real-time sensing technologies in the VR operettas including a dual GPNGP deal band, GPS sensor to RGB depth cameras and a Windows mixed reality provided relative world track. In other words, roadblocks, post boxes that might be in the middle of the sidewalk. All of those are going to appear in your VR world automatically. So you know, to navigate around them. Moving carts, everything very, very cool. So that's coming our way. And I'm coming your way again. Here. In our final segment, we're going to talk about a Facebook lawsuit and vulnerabilities that we are not addressing in our businesses when it comes to apps. For any of you who have previously been or are currently being chastised for your addiction to first-person shooter games, the United States Army has your six.The Army recently announced that it will begin testing robotic combat vehicles that are remote-controlled by crews from the back of modified Bradley Fighting Vehicles dubbed Mission Enabler Technologies-Demonstrators, or MET-Ds. The tests are scheduled to begin next March at Fort Carson, Colorado. Crews will acquire and fire at targets with M113 armored personnel carriers that been retrofitted with the MET-D system. These RCVs utilize 360-degree situational awareness cameras and a remote turret for the 25 mm main gun.Additionally, each MET-D will have a crew comprised of a driver in the aforementioned Bradley, another soldier responsible for the main gun, and four other soldiers controlling two additional vehicles performing platoon-level maneuvers, and providing cover fire with 7.62 mm machine guns. After these tests, the Next-Generation Combat Vehicle Cross-Functional Team, as part of the Army Futures Command, will use soldier feedback to improve the vehicles and design future evaluations.Additional tests scheduled for next May will see how the RCVs work in unison with a light infantry unit in performing reconnaissance and basic security tasks. Initial feedback has the chain of command impressed with how quickly the crews have gotten a feel for the MET-D controls. Looking even further forward, the Army sees three RCV variants: a light version transportable by helicopter; a mid-sized version that can fit on a C-130 aircraft; and a heavy model that would require a larger aircraft for transport. Infrared vision kits with a target range of at least 8.5 miles are also on the wish list. The main goal is to develop robotic combat vehicles that utilize soldier skills without placing them in the direct line of fire.

“You’ll find there is room for us all” In May 1988, at the age of 20, McVeigh graduated from the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. While in the military, McVeigh used much of his spare time to read about firearms, sniper tactics, and explosives.[16] McVeigh was reprimanded by the military for purchasing a "White Power" T-shirt at a Ku Klux Klan protest against black servicemen who wore "Black Power" T-shirts around a Military installation, primarily Army. He was a top-scoring gunner with the 25mm cannon of the Bradley Fighting Vehicles used by his 1st Infantry Division. He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, before being deployed on Operation Desert Storm. Speaking of his experience in Kuwait in an interview before his execution, documented in McVeigh's authorized biography American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh & the Tragedy at Oklahoma City, he stated he decapitated an Iraqi soldier with cannon fire on his first day in the war and celebrated. He said he was later shocked to be ordered to execute surrendering prisoners and to see carnage on the road leaving Kuwait City after U.S. troops routed the Iraqi army. McVeigh received several service awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal. McVeigh aspired to join the United States Army Special Forces . After returning from the Gulf War, he entered the selection program, but washed out on the second day of the 21-day assessment and selection course for the Special Forces. McVeigh decided to leave the Army and was honorably discharged in 1991. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_McVeigh Editorial -Chase- Public Access America There comes a point I think when it should be mentioned, public access America does not believe violence and anger are ever the solution. We were created in and of the ideals that information is the real power. That being said, the frustration with situations in which a group, race, ANY, are singled out and treated with disregard of laws should be held accountable. We the people have a power that is being hidden away from us by magician politicians that believe and maybe rightfully that we can be silenced. Your silence is their victory, as the writer of this I think McVeigh was right in believing that the attacks at Ruby ridge and Waco went horribly wrong. His shock and outrage were a normal reaction, I do believe as an opinion that his actions were also horribly incorrect. Violence in anyway only provokes violence and justifies the divide. Sound Clip Sources Hearing: Oversight of the European Reassurance Initiative, House Armed Services Committee Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, July 13, 2016. Witnesses: Major General David Allvin: J-5, US Air Force, US European Command (EUCOM) Rachel Ellehuus: Principal Director, Europe & NATO Policy, Office of the Secretary of Defense Tom Tyra: G-3/5/7, US Army Timestamps & Transcripts {06:10} Chairman Vicky Hartzler (MO)- "Foremost of these challenges is a resurgent Russia." {08:12} Rep. Jackie Speier (CA)- "Recent events in Europe have underscored this threat. For example, Russia has occupied Crimea and has fomented the continuing separatists struggle in eastern Ukraine. Across Europe and in particular along Russia’s border, the threat of Russian intervention is on many people’s minds." {11:45} Major General David Allvin - "The strategic environment in Europe has changed drastically over the past 30 months. One of the key reasons for the growing instability has been Russian malign influence, coercion, and aggression against NATO allies and other partner nations. Since the illegal annexation of Crimea and the Russian activity in the Donbass region of Ukraine, the potential for Russia to further advance their military adventurism into NATO countries has demanded a strong response. We at U.S. European Command have been working to assure our allies that our commitment to Article 5 of the Atlantic Treaty is iron clad." {15:59} Rachel Ellehuus- "The three challenges that I see post-Warsaw, and as we continue to think about the future of ERI, are, firstly, institutional adaptation—we need to find a way to make NATO more agile in terms of its decision making, command structure, and defense planning; secondly, defense investment—and that’s not just monetary but also in terms of political will—we need to encourage folks to continue to increase their defense spending and to support operations both within the European and transatlantic theater and further afield; and finally, we need to combat internal political challenges and resist those who seek to divide us or undermine the international security order." {18:10} Major General David Allvin -"We find that within the European theater, we see a more aggressive Russia that is influencing on the periphery states of NATO, and so given the current correlation of forces that might exist in a conflict, specifically with the United States, we do not have nearly the forces we had after 25 years of the degradation of the forces in Europe. This has been understandable because there have been other national-security priorities that have actually taken precedence in other parts of the world. However, we find ourself now with smaller number of forces from all services, as well as the appropriate equipment, in order to be able to field and to respond to any other Russian aggression, and I would say that what ERI has done is it is rapidly enabled us to reverse that trend." {20:35} Rachel Ellehuus -"So we’ve seen the French carrier, Charles de Gaulle, deploy in the Middle East to help us with some of our stress on our naval and maritime Forces, we’ve seen cooperative arrangements to use one another’s bases, and we’ve seen host nations stepping up. So when we send our forces to the Baltic states, host nations such as Poland and the Balts are stepping forward to provide that infrastructure and support." {26:40} Rep. Jackie Speier -"You had indicated to me privately that the troops that we will have stationed as part of ERI would be engaged in military exercises, and you had suggested that the numbers may be as high as a hundred per year, some smaller, some larger. How many of these are air shows?" Major General David Allvin: "Ma’am, I actually wouldn’t put an air show in the—" Rep. Speier: "Good." Major General Allvin: "—category of exercise. When we refer to these exercises, and when I say a hundred, some of these are small, maybe company-level exercises, but these are building that understanding that cohesion at the unit level, and I would say those are the most prolific. However, with the initial funding we’ve been able to receive through ERI, we’re able to have exercises at the larger level, the battalion level and above, which really help us understand the inner operability between formations, because we understand that U.S. European Command will not be the sole entity that will have to defend against Russian aggression; we will be fighting with our allies and partners in the region. And so these broader exercises, these higher-level exercises, really enhance that confidence to be able to fight and maneuver and do combined-armed warfare beyond just the United States but in the coalition." {29:33} Tom Tyra -"In the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, you would see 80 M1 tanks and 140 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, 18 artillery systems, a number of mortar systems and smaller pieces of equipment. So we would end up with that plus the support vehicles that enable that to fight. Then, there would be a rotating brigade that would bring identical sets of equipment. As you delivered the Fires Brigade, you would expect, a another hundred or so artillery systems, either tube or rocket launched to be added to that Fires Brigade." {52:16} Rep. Beto O’Rourke (TX) - "What are the potential risks of this strategy? What could go wrong?" Major General David Allvin: "So, you actually touched on it very well, Congressman, is that there is an escalation risk here." Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about Spc. Andrew Lamkin, a combat medic, "With another Soldier’s help, he dragged PV2 McCauley to a sector of the rooftop that seemed safer and less exposed. Upon reaching it, however, SPC Lamkin and his patient were immediately taken under heavy rifle and RPG fire from insurgent gunmen across the street. Without regard to his own safety, SPC Lamkin used his own body as a shield, and began to stabilize his seriously wounded comrade as withering fire raked the rooftop around him. SPC Lamkin realized that PV2 McCauley was unconscious and choking on his own blood. He quickly opened the casualty’s airway using a “J-tube,” enabling him to breathe although he was unconscious. The enemy continued to hammer the rooftop with RPG and rifle fire, but Lamkin shielded PV2 McCauley’s body with his own. Securing the “J-tube” with 550-cord in order to move his patient, SPC Lamkin called for the evacuation vehicle. Before he could evacuate the casualty, however, SPC Lamkin helped carry him over a four-foot high wall, under fire, and then down three flights of stairs to the evacuation vehicle - an impressive show of stamina and strength. On the ground floor, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle tasked to evacuate PV2 McCauley backed up to the door. As the wounded Soldier’s squad placed him in the Bradley, SPC Lamkin continued to scan for insurgent fighters. He identified two that were repositioning to interdict the MEDEVAC vehicle, and killed them both with accurate rifle fire. SPC Lamkin demonstrated his expert marksmanship, medical skills and conspicuous gallantry; he is truly the epitome of the combat medic." Matt from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly collaboration to bring the inspirational, true stories of the men and women fighting for us around the world to the radio. This week, Matt focused on SGT 1st Class Paul Ray Smith, the only soldier to win the Congressional Medal of Honor in the war in Iraq so far, For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty: Sergeant First Class Paul R. Smith distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy near Baghdad International Airport, Baghdad, Iraq on 4 April 2003. On that day, Sergeant First Class Smith was engaged in the construction of a prisoner of war holding area when his Task Force was violently attacked by a company-sized enemy force. Realizing the vulnerability of over 100 fellow soldiers, Sergeant First Class Smith quickly organized a hasty defense consisting of two platoons of soldiers, one Bradley Fighting Vehicle and three armored personnel carriers. As the fight developed, Sergeant First Class Smith braved hostile enemy fire to personally engage the enemy with hand grenades and anti-tank weapons, and organized the evacuation of three wounded soldiers from an armored personnel carrier struck by a rocket propelled grenade and a 60mm mortar round. Fearing the enemy would overrun their defenses, Sergeant First Class Smith moved under withering enemy fire to man a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on a damaged armored personnel carrier. In total disregard for his own life, he maintained his exposed position in order to engage the attacking enemy force. During this action, he was mortally wounded. His courageous actions helped defeat the enemy attack, and resulted in as many as 50 enemy soldiers killed, while allowing the safe withdrawal of numerous wounded soldiers. Sergeant First Class Smith’s extraordinary heroism and uncommon valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Third Infantry Division “Rock of the Marne,” and the United States Army.
