In today's special Books with Hooks, Carly and CeCe are joined by guest literary agent, Jenni Ferrari-Adler who represents Susie Yang (whose novel, White Ivy,  was the #BookswithHooksBC pick for June).  Jenni helps Carly and CeCe evaluate three query letters, in the process discussing leaning into specificity;  sprinkling backstory info rather than dumping it in;  setting up your bombshell moments with the right information; and the importance of emotionality in sample pages. CeCe and Jenni also illustrate how subjective agent opinions can be when reading pages and how the process works when an editor is evaluating a manuscript. After which, Bianca chats with author, Kath Jonathan,  and freelance editor, Lisa Rivers,  about how an author can maximize their interaction with a freelance editor. In the chat, they discuss what kind of info an editor likes to see from the author; breaking up a book into quarters for edits; making point-form notes for each chapter; handling the emotional turmoil after getting edits back; how editors push for the emotional truth and elevation of a manuscript; determining if a scene really needs to be there (get out your highlighter!); how to know when you're ready to approach an editor; and how endurance and fight can help you meet your goals. We're talking about one of my favorite things to talk about when discussing business. And that is MINDSET! When I first started my business 10 years ago, mindset was not even a blip on my radar. No one was talking about it. And if they had talked about it, I would've thought it was ridiculous. I would have thought mindset has nothing to do with running a business. How wrong was I! Nowadays, mindset has become a bit of a buzzword—it's everywhere you look. In this book, Kim shares an honest roadmap every breast cancer fighter needs on her journey to recovery.   Episode Highlights 01:38 – Kim says her first book ‘Life Reconstructed' is the book that came out of her breast cancer experience. 02:48 – There's a chapter that refers to the interviews with people, how cancer affected their lives, states Kim. 04:50 - In this book, Kim has shared how Corey (her husband) and she got through the cancer journey. She also talks about how she dealt with the physical pain and with the people who say hurtful things. 06:01 – Kim suggests how to communicate better with your husband during this tough time. 08:09 - You probably need to let that partner know how you're feeling that is too much and that you need a break. 10:06 – Kim shares that her oldest one is not very talkative.  12:27 - It was definitely a process of healing and growing together as a family, says Kim. 14:37 - Your book will be a good guide a good best friend to have in their purse or their knapsack, says Dr. Carla Marie Manly. 18:16 – When we're going through this think about, what we can do when we get to the other side that would be just kind of celebrating, getting through this together. 20:05 – Kim shares, they give away free mastectomy pillows at their website. So, if someone going through cancer and needs pillows after surgery, they give you support.   Three Key Points This book would help to understand the person who is going through cancer and how they are dealing with it. What exactly is a mastectomy or what does that mean when you say flat reconstruction, that kind of information to help them understand the medical side, but then there's also a lot of emotional side to it like how can we help this person? How can we understand what she's going through?  Kim shares, one can get tested for a gene and if they have a certain mutation, then their chances of breast cancer are extremely high. If we are going through a hard thing like this, it's okay to feel overwhelmed and stressed out and not want to go through it and just feel those emotions. Don't try to be superwoman. Go through just one day at a time.    Tweetable Quotes “My book is like reconstructive the subtitle is navigating the world of mastectomy and breast reconstruction.” – Kim Harms “When your stress is high like that, and you're going through something so painful, relationships are affected.” – Kim Harms “I also share the experience of many other women that I interviewed during the process.” – Kim Harms “We didn't realize what was causing the friction.” – Kim Harms “Being together with your family through this difficult time. Not only gave them the gift of compassion but also really craved a lot of healing.” - Dr. Carla Marie Manly  “We went on a backpacking trip which we've done a few times but with our boys and it ended up being this crazy trip.” – Kim Harms   Resources Mentioned Helping Families be Happy Podcast Apple Dr. Carla Marie Manly Website LinkedIn Twitter   Instagram Kim Harms Website Facebook Instagram Podcast Editing

#109: How to Recognize and Overcome Perfectionism, with Suzy Bills

Deliberate Freelancer

Today's guest is Suzy Bills from Utah. Suzy  is an editor and author and a faculty member in the editing and publishing program at Brigham Young University (BYU). She was previously a lead editor for the Joseph Smith Papers, and she's owned a writing and editing business for more than a decade. Suzy's book, “The Freelance Editor's Handbook” is being published this fall by the University of California Press. She is also starting to offer business consulting and coaching for freelancers. Suzy began freelancing on the side in 2006 while working as an editor full-time. She became a full-time freelancer in 2011. She started at BYU as an adjunct professor and was offered a full-time position in 2017. She continues to maintain her writing and editing business. Perfectionism is a personality characteristic that causes people to strive to be flawless. That causes them to set really high standards and be quite critical in how they evaluate their performance. It often leads people to think they shouldn't make any mistakes. Perfectionism can be destructive, but it can also have positive qualities. Suzy saw perfectionism in herself and worked to turn it into a positive attribute. Perfectionism can lead to obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, eating disorders and more. There are two types of perfectionism: adaptive/constructive and maladaptive/destructive. With adaptive perfectionism, people set high standards and are motivated to reach them in encouraging and exciting ways. This can lead to happiness, a sense of meaning and satisfaction with life. With maladaptive perfectionism, people set high standards but aren't optimistic they can achieve them. It leads to self-criticism, stress and low self-esteem, which often leads to burnout. And too much stress on yourself can actually lead to lower performance on a project or task. Overcoming perfectionism is mostly about changing our thinking. We can be working on the exact same project but look at our goals and success in different ways. Perfectionism causes some people to not even start their freelance business. It causes freelance business owners to not reach out to new clients, to not start new services, to discount projects and give refunds over small mistakes. Humans, including copy editors, aren't perfect. Industry standards say 90% accuracy in editing is achievable and acceptable. Copy editors are not always going to be 100% accurate. (This is also a good reason to hire a proofreader later on.) How can we recognize and manage perfectionism? Practice being self-aware and catching yourself when you're in a perfectionism spiral. Are you using your perfectionism in a healthy way? Perfectionism might manifest as being cruel to yourself. At that point, put your thoughts on trial. Stop being the prosecutor and be the objective judge or jury. Find and evaluate the evidence that shows what you are thinking is not accurate (for example, success on a last project, this client rehired you). You may also identify an area of weakness. That's OK. If that happens, create a plan about improving that weakness. Ask yourself: Where was the breakdown that led to that mistake? It is a process issue, overwork, lack of sleep or lack of skills? To encourage a positive mindset, create a mantra that works for you and repeat it multiple times every day. It might feel silly at first, but you will start to internalize it and believe it. Accountability partners can also help reassure you when you're being too hard on yourself. It's also important and helpful for people to talk about their mistakes and weaknesses to normalize that we are not perfect. Write down your thoughts, especially because people tend to ruminate on the bad thoughts and situation. Writing can help get it out of your mind and allow you to move past it. Keep a record of positive feedback, whether in an email folder, a smartphone “boost bank” folder or in a praise jar. If you do discover you made a mistake, you are likely to react physically. So, change that physical reaction. Take deep breaths, move your body to relax it. Walk around. Go for a longer walk. Next, take responsibility for a mistake with a client. That actually increases respect for you. Then, create an action plan to prevent that type of mistake in the future.   Biz Bite: Set Aside Professional Development Time Every Week   Resources: Suzy's book, “The Freelance Editor's Handbook” http://writingandeditingbysuzy.com Suzy Bills on LinkedIn ACES–the Society for Editing Episode #70 of Deliberate Freelancer: Techniques to Deal with Anxiety from My New Therapist Episode #71 of Deliberate Freelancer: 3 Failures and the Lessons They Taught Me

This week's episode is different to my usual episodes, because this time I'm being interviewed about my work as an editor, and the person asking the questions is on my best friends in the TV world and that is long time collaborator, producer director Paul Symonds. Go check out episode 7 for my interview of Paul. And the reason we are doing this because over the last year of doing this podcast I've had several people ask me about my work etc etc and it was Haider Zafar who messaged me on LinkedIn and suggested I get a former guest on to host the interview, so here were are! And in this interview we look back at my career over the last 20 odd years and how I actually got into TV with no qualifications or even knowledge of how to use a computer, the way I approach an edit and work with others and I have some tips about how to get into the industry.

City life was exciting and full of challenges. A busy social calendar, attending graduate school at New York University, and starting a career as a budding magazine journalist all added to the mounting pressures that she faced. It was at this point that she began to look for an outlet to release stress. One day, Janna walked into a yoga class and everything changed. Eventually, she set out to pursue a new career as a yoga instructor.Janna moved back to Pittsburgh, and she fully immersed herself in yoga instruction. When her home studio faced either sale or permanent closure, she took a leap and bought it, and Inhale Pittsburgh was born. Although Janna changed careers, she never left journalism. A highly-critical review of three medical treatments for women in the UK found thousands of lives had been harmed because officials failed to listen to safety worries and often dismissed them as "women's problems". We spoke to the BBC Health correspondent Anna Collinson, and to Baroness Cumberlege about her review. And we heard reaction from Clare Pelham, CEO of the Epilepsy Society, and Mary McLaughlin, who has campaigned for women affected by pelvic mesh in Ireland. The typical two-hour movie that audiences enjoy across the world daily is the culmination of a year or multi-year process. Projects fit for the big screen or the flat screen take months to put together once filming starts, but by the time it hits the desk of freelance colorist and finishing editor Mike Nuget, it is expected to be finished within days. Nuget gets films fit for viewing by perfecting audio, color, and other fine edits. This can be an extremely pressure-packed job, and with ever-changing technology, Nuget has continually had to adapt to the tools at his disposal. “If I’m not thinking about my job then I’m falling behind in a way,” he said. “I’m constantly learning something, whether it’s just watching a tutorial online about software that I already know and it’s just tips and tricks from somebody else, or it’s a completely different software that I’ve never heard of that I want to learn about.” An editor’s toolkit is essential for not only quality work, but an efficient workflow. Though there are many, Nuget cited Cinedeck’s cineXtools specifically as one of his favorites and calls it an indispensable program for saving time and increasing efficiency. CineXtools allows editors to make small changes to an exported file without having to completely rerender the final piece. He estimated that the ability to insert an edit into a file using Cinedeck’s software once saved him at least 21 hours on a project, which carried the added benefit of reducing costs for his client as well. The ability to stay sharp and in tune with new pieces of equipment keeps Nuget in demand by some of the largest names in television and film. With a portfolio that includes work for HBO, Netflix, ABC, NBC, ESPN, and Hulu among other major networks, he said his flexibility on multiple editing platforms, coupled with 20 years of experience, keep him busy. While there is pressure to learn quickly and turnaround projects sometimes within the same week, Nuget takes time to enjoy learning the nuances of different editing software services while doing his job. He advised young editors to make YouTube their ‘best friend’ and puts together tutorials on basic editing tips to continue preparing the future of the workforce.

‘I’m about to upload my story, can you quickly check for me,’ is a phrase Lynne Stringer hears a lot in her day job as a freelance editor and it drives her crazy. Her advice is we need at least two rounds of editing and preferably more, especially if it is our first book. Timeline errors, plot inconsistencies, structural problems, grammar and spelling problems, and everything else problems all get a mention during our chat today and I’m going to brave and suggest some of us may never look at the editing process with such fondness ever again. Editors are our ‘objective eye’ and their job is to tactfully and gently guide us through the process of making our babies the best they can be – after we think we’ve already brushed their hair and cleaned their teeth. You may find Lynne’s advice confronting, and some of the prices she quotes even more so, but if our work is going to be our business card, brand and representative out there in the big, wide publishing world, then we’d rather get it right, wouldn’t we? Lynne tells us how…but I can’t guarantee we’ll like it. You can find out more about Lynne and her work http://www.lynnestringer.com/ (here.) Read Full Transcript Lynne Stringer Melinda: Welcome to another episode of Writer on the Road. Today I've got with me a wonderful woman by the name of Lynne Stringer. It's someone I've been wanting to speak to for quite a while because Lynne does the very thing that I think I'm brilliant at and I'm actually very bad at and it's called editing. For all of you who know anything about Indie publishing the first piece of advice that any of us give you is get yourself a professional editor because no matter how many times you read your stuff you miss the mistakes and I have a case point, I've been putting a little series of podcast interviews in the last few days and I think I'm rather brilliant and my daughter will edit them for me and go through them and there are glaring mistakes that I've read ten times and those mistakes are just there. Welcome Lynn. Lynne Stringer: Thank you very much Mel, it's great to be here. Melinda: I'm very keen to talk to you about the editing process. But first of all would you like to tell us a little bit about yourself so that my listeners have an idea of what you're about or where you've come from, where you're going, all that kind of stuff, so that they can switch me out and tune into you. Lynne Stringer: I've been working with writing ever since I was a child really, I've always loved writing. My father's a writer also. I gradually got into it more and I actually studied a bit of journalism, became the editor of a newspaper, just a small one, which I was the chief journalist for and editor of for seven years. After that I started working with a company called Wombat Books doing some editing first. I was editing non-fiction works for them. Then I started editing their fiction as well because I just seemed to have a knack for being able to do that. I finished up working with them as an editor, although I still do some freelance for them when required, but I finished up that last year and started working for Amanda Greenslade at Australian eBook Publisher who I believe you had on the show recently as well. Now I do editing for her, I also do my own private editing work as well. It's not an easy task because as I like to say an editor's job is to tell you that your baby is ugly and needs plastic surgery which no one likes to hear. Melinda: Lynn's never said that about my work because otherwise I'd hit the off button. She can actually say that my work's beautiful before we start. But the truth of the matter is, Lynne and I were having a brief conversation before we started tonight, all of us, even the best of us, even English teachers, miss the most basic of things when it comes to reading our own work because it becomes very familiar to us. That's why I've got...
