We welcome Joe Lee, head coach of Bullis School, back to the Gill podcast to discuss his experience at the Paris24 Olympic Games. Joe is the coach of 400m runner Quincy Wilson. This is his third time on the podcast, be sure to go back and listen to his first episode where we learn his journey in this great profession and his second episode where we discuss the Olympic Trials and his qualifying for the Olympic Games. Joe doesn't hold back as he shares his insights into how they learned Quincy wouldn't be running the Mixed 4x400m relay, the consequences of that decision, and the mental state of athlete and coach as they prepared for a potential leg on the men's 4x400m relay event. Matt Zigler is a teacher, artist, and maker. He is currently the Bullis Innovation and Technology Lab (BITlab) Coordinator at Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, where he works with students and teachers to bring design thinking and the Maker process into traditional content area classes, teach Maker related classes, and oversees a state of the art Makerspace and Fab Lab. Matt has presented on how to design and build a Makerspace that meets the needs of specific schools, how to create a culture of Making and innovation, and how to develop Maker programming for all levels of ability, K-12. The Maker movement has been an excellent opportunity for people to become producers rather than just consumers, and schools are recognizing the value of offering students the tools, materials, and skills necessary to design sophisticated and meaningful projects. But teaching technical skills should not be the end goal: At its best, a Maker education teaches students to think and act in creative ways that can be applied to difficult challenges in all areas of life. Matt's book Three Modes of Making (release date Dec 23/Jan 24) provides a framework for Maker courses in upper grades that teach students creative-process skills through three key Maker modes: Imitation, Modification, and Innovation. On this episode, we discuss the three Maker modes and their associated skill sets  to provide educators with ideas for helping students be creatively purposeful.Matt's class also created The Wheelchair Stroller project, and his students ended up all over the news, including NBC Washington and the CBS Evening News!Listen to more ideas from Matt on Ep 211Connect with Matt:Website mattzigler.comTwitter @BullisBITlabMedium medium.com/@matthewziglerChris Woods is the host of the STEM Everyday Podcast... Episode 49 of The BMT is the second installment of BMT Kids with Jada Pierre! Jada was born December 3, 2002 in Houston, Texas.  Jada's mother, Melonie Barrow, began coaching another athlete when Jada was just 6 years old.  Jada would attend practice with her mother and would just run around having fun.  One day, she asked her mother if she could run at a track with her older god sister Lexy.  Jada ran her first race at the age of 7 and has been going ever since.   Jada was always the smallest running in her age group and would always miss making the finals in her events the 100m and 200m.  At the age of 11, Jada was introduced to the hurdles as well as the multi events. She liked the hurdles but not the multi events.  The first few years of hurdling were interesting and she was determined to learn. It wasn't until she was 13yrs old she began to be more competitive in the hurdles and sprints.  Jada started high school at C.D. Hylton in Manassas, Virginia and had a phenomenal freshman year. Not only was she a stellar athlete she was also an honor roll student at Hylton.  She suffered a knee injury at the very end of her freshman year and it would impact her sophomore and a portion of her junior year.  She transferred to Bullis School in Potomac, MD to complete her junior and senior year.  Jada trained hard in the pool and limited track work to ensure she would be able to compete. Just as Jada began to show form, COVID hit and the indoor and outdoor season was cancelled.  Jada maintained a 3.5 GPA at Bullis school. Jada continued to train throughout the summer and fall in anticipation of track meets.   December 4th and 5th was her debut and boy did she show out.  At that meet Jada put times down, that placed her number 1 in the 60mh among high school girls and number 3 in the 60m dash among high school girls.   She has continued to make great strides on and off the track. That's like, based on a feeling.  When I saw those pieces, I could see within those dancers what they were feeling when they were doing it and every movement had an intention. In this episode, we’re going in a slightly different direction. Since we’re here to explore the future of educational technology in higher education, we thought it would be interesting to talk with someone who is currently teaching our future students. Stacey Roshan teaches at the Bullis School, an independent K12 school outside of Washington, DC, where she is also the Upper School Technology Coordinator. She’s well known for flipping her math classroom, introducing students to new material before class through online explanatory videos she creates, and spending class time helping students learn math by working problems on their own and in small groups. She uses a variety of technologies in her teaching, all in very intentional ways to help students learn math and learn how to learn. The students we see in our college classrooms don’t come in as blank slates. They have a variety of prior learning experiences. This conversation with Stacey Roshan will provide the Leading Lines audience with a little insight into the kinds of experiences and expectations our future students will have, particularly about the use of technology in learning.
