J.W. Marriott had a gift for seeing what the public needed and made sure to give it to them. Marriott is the epitome of Entrepreneur to Empire. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. Here's one of those. [ASAP Commercial Doors Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast. I'm Dave Young, sitting here with Stephen Semple, and we're talking about people that built empires. Empires, sir. Not just a little business, an empire. As usual, Stephen whispered the topic into my ear just as we were counting down to start recording. And the word is Marriott. I guess that's a name, the Marriott, I don't know if it was one guy or a family. I know that it ended up being a bunch of Marriott's involved, but the Marriott hotel chain. Stephen Semple: The Marriott Hotel chain. Marriott Corporation. Dave Young: I'll tell you what I know about them. And this is weird. A Mormon family? Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: And most of the brothers that were involved, maybe in the beginning, but anyway, they were all members of the same college fraternity that I was in. Stephen Semple: Is that right? Dave Young: I didn't know them, but that was the talk about them, "They're these BYU Sigma Chi's from Utah." Stephen Semple: And John Willard Marriott and his wife Alice, very devout Mormons and part of the origin of the Marriott chain actually starts with them doing a mission in New England. Dave Young: Cool. Anxious to hear the story. Stephen Semple: It started in March 5th, 1927 by John Willard Marriott, which is part of the reason why one of the Marriott's is the JW. Dave Young: Sure. This goes back way farther than I knew. I think by the time I was aware of them, this was the eighties. Wow. Big history. Stephen Semple: And today they have over 9,000 properties. There's a whole pile of different badges under it. Dave Young: Brands. Stephen Semple: And million and a half rooms, 400,000 employees. They do like 23 billion in revenue. And look, everyone knows the name Marriott. Dave Young: I think it qualifies as an empire. Stephen Semple: I think it does. And it starts with JW traveling to D.C, Washington, D.C after doing a mission in New England. And he experiences this really hot, humid summer, and he thinks to himself, "This city needs more places to buy cool drinks." He returns home to Utah. He finishes his degree at the University of Utah and returns to Washington where he buys an A&W franchise in Columbia Heights. Dave Young: Good idea. He should have invented air conditioning. I think we've talked about. Stephen Semple: That would've been a better idea. Dave Young: I always have to slide in some little weird bit of trivia that I know, but back in the days before air conditioning, the British Foreign Service actually paid people tropical pay when they were stationed in Washington, D.C. Stephen Semple: Wow, because it is so ugly in the summertime. Dave Young: It was dank and humid. Basically it's a city built on a swamp. Stephen Semple: It pretty much is. Dave Young: He buys an A&W franchise in? Stephen Semple: Columbia Heights. It's a suburb of D.C. It's great in the summer. Business is great in summer. Really slow in the winter. Because at the time, A&W did not sell food. They started off, first of all, it's just root beer. Now he gets permission to sell food, but does it under a different name called Hot Shop. Dave Young: Hot Shop. Shop or Shot? Stephen Semple:

In Shaun's own words:As a young boy, growing up in Virginia, I used to pour over house plan books from the local library for hours! I was fascinated with interior design, architecture, and what HOME represents to all people. I found that rooms and our environments can influence us in many ways including our emotions and our life experiences. I continued my hobby of design, and architecture appreciation throughout my teen years. I initially followed a career path in Musical Theater, but that is a story for another time. After discovering that I preferred roots to wings I decided that the traveling life was not for me and honed my skills in hospitality management with the Marriott Corporation. It is there that I found my love of service and helping others realize their dreams. I moved to the Palm Springs area eight years ago after falling in love with the architecture and the natural beauty of the Coachella Valley. I am extremely grateful to be able to help others find their piece of paradise here in our glorious valley.Contact Shaun: https://shaunwaters.com/Photo: Copyright Wilkinson/2024Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

David Ibarra is a leadership consultant and entrepreneur. He is the founder of eLeaderTech, the Ibarra-Brito Group, and the David Ibarra Enterprises.  David's life is a testament to overcoming adversity. Born to immigrant parents and placed in foster care at a young age, he began his career washing dishes before becoming the youngest franchise owner of a Marriott Corporation division. As founder of the Eb Bauer Foundation, David has awarded full scholarships to 134 students and continues weekly mentoring sessions through "time tithe," sharing his wisdom with those seeking guidance. Our host Jim engages David in an insightful conversation about fear as motivation, the challenges of making versus giving away money, selective charity based on execution not just intent, and the importance of cultivating one's talents despite economic hardships. David reflects on key figures who shaped him—a fifth-grade teacher who nurtured his academic growth; Robert Farrell who introduced him to 'Think and Grow Rich'; Marriott's support that led him into entrepreneurship; and mentors who complemented his skills. He advises aspiring non-profit supporters to scrutinize organizations' effectiveness before contributing their time or money. Despite receiving knighthood for his contributions, David remains dedicated without any bucket list but lives out principles leading towards a rich life encompassing family, friends, faith community health—and financial wealth.

It also owns the Roy Rogers brand and operates 13 hotels in the mid-Atlantic. They talked about franchising, legacy brands, and Roy Rodgers. The connection with Roy Rogers started with Jim's Dad, Pete Sr., who began his career with the Marriott Corporation in the mid-1960s when he was hired to begin their fast food division. In 1968, they launched Roy Rogers Restaurants with the first restaurant in Falls Church, Virginia. They expanded the brand, and Pete Sr. eventually became the Executive Vice President at Marriott, overseeing Roy Rogers division and some other restaurant concepts throughout the 1960s and 70s.“Dad did feel very strongly about the Roy Rogers brand, loved the brand, of course, it was in its inception,” Plamondon said, “and knew what it meant in the quick-serve arena.” - Jim PlamondonIn 1979, Pete Sr. left Marriott and in 1980 became a franchisee of a Roy Rodgers in Frederick, Maryland. He believed in the brand and recognized its strength and opportunity, so he wanted to get started as an entrepreneur, according to Jim. His dream was to run four or five restaurants, but little did he know it would grow into something much more significant.“The brand itself grew to be 648 restaurants under Marriott,” Plamondon said. After having careers of their own, Jim and his brother Pete Jr., who also owns the business, joined their father in the mid-1990s. They bought the business from their father and eventually bought Roy Rogers from Hardee's parent company, CKE Restaurants Holdings.

On this episode of The Talent Development Hot Seat, Andy welcomes guest Lee Cockerell, retired Executive Vice President of Operations for the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. He held that position for more than 10 years, and during that time, his responsibilities encompassed a diverse mix of operations that included 20 resort hotels, four theme parks, two water parks, five golf courses, a shopping village, and much more. Lee Cockerell joined Disney in July 1990, and prior to joining Disney, he spent 17 years in various executive positions with the Marriott Corporation and eight years with Hilton Hotels. During his career, he shifted his leadership style from the classic command-and-control to become a more modern, inclusive leader, leading with empathy and discipline and creating an environment where people wanted to come to work. In this episode, you'll hear: How Lee Cockerell overcame a turbulent childhood and began his career in hospitality and eventually landed at Disney. Why insecurity propelled him forward and how continuing to move forward transformed him. Experience, education, and exposure were key to creating a new mindset. What Disney did to reinforce diversity, equity, and inclusion and why Lee Cockerell believes it made the destination so popular. What you can learn about leadership from moms and how you can apply it to your leadership skills. His approach to talent development and creating great leaders and why it's all about the human factor. The three things Lee Cockerell focused on in his role as a Disney EVP and what you can learn from his approach. How Disney maintains its culture of workplace excitement. Why offering opportunity encourages employees to stick around long-term. The types of training Disney offers and how they determine what training is needed. What diversity and inclusiveness are and why these qualities are so important for companies to have. Why you should do the things that make you uncomfortable and how it can change you for the better. Lee Cockerell's proudest career accomplishment. The biggest mistake he's made in his career and what he learned from it. The trend in talent development and leadership he's following right now. Why he recommends reading The Effective Executive by Peter Drucker and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. One piece of career advice he would give to anyone looking to accelerate their career. Author and leadership consultant, David Ibarra, joins Blair and Theresa today to help you discover what you truly want from life. David shares his thoughts on how success is a combination of where he feels like he is comfortable, be it family, faith, community, health, and yes, wealth. However, life for him was not about money but about freedom. Listen as they discuss facing the fear of poverty and learning from adversity. We need to get away from the negative madness and realize that we are in charge of our own thoughts.   About the Guest: David Ibarra Author of “Stop Drifting: Become the Switch Master of Your Own Thought and Pivot to Positive,” David R. Ibarra is a leadership consultant and successful entrepreneur in Salt Lake City who blazed his own trail to success after being raised in the Utah foster care system.   At 28 years old he started his first business, beginning a career that spans the restaurant, automotive, and leadership consulting industries. David wrote “Stop Drifting” as a chapter within his “Life Purpose” journey. He is dedicated to working with employed adults who often drift through life unsatisfied. His leadership coaching focuses on developing talent and teaching individuals how to become goal setters and achieve a positive work experience, which creates the freedom to find success in other roles including family, faith, community, and health.    Humble Beginnings David's story began as the son of a Mexican immigrant father and a rural Utah mother. When his parents divorced, 2-year-old David and his 3-year-old brother Mickey were placed into foster care until they reconnected with their father as teenagers. At eighteen years of age, David started his career in the hospitality industry as a dishwasher. Ten years later, he became the youngest franchise owner of Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour Restaurant – a division of the Marriott Corporation.   Business Leader David held several positions for the Marriott Corporation, and was the general manager of a large automobile dealership. Risk Management Doesn't Happen by Accident - Learn How to Plan Now

The primary focus of risk management is the protection of resources from losses due to legal action and the activities associated with risk management are easily adapted to a dental practice. The focus of these activities is directed at identifying areas of legal vulnerability and taking steps directed at mitigating or eliminating these risks. Additionally, purchasing insurance to offset potential financial losses is essential to risk management. The current areas of legal vulnerability center around issues of (1) absence of consent to care, (2) negligence, and (3) breach of contract. Consent to care, to be valid, must be informed and granted voluntarily. To meet the test of "informed," the information given to the patient must be in understandable language and contain the risks, benefits, and alternatives to the recommended treatment. Otherwise, it may not provide much of a defense. In addition, the patient must be given an opportunity to have his or her questions answered. Obtaining consent in the treatment of minors requires the signature of those with legal capacity to grant consent. Being creative, however, does not always equate to optimal results. In other words, asset protection plans which are elaborate or suspect are likely to collapse under the scrutiny of a judge or jury. In the wake of litigation, you will be expected to describe specifics about how assets were transferred, and why. If the explanation is not sound and compelling, the court is likely to rule for the plaintiff, leading to disastrous consequences. The objective here is making it as difficult as legally possible for litigators, creditors, and others to win a judgement against you, or your business. Creating such protection litigants on notice that going to court will require an expensive lawsuit that could stretch on for months or years. When the Marriott Corporation split itself into two corporations in the early 1990s, their primary motivation was dividing cash rich assets from its lawsuit-prone operations. Now, as a dentist, you may not think you need to worry about this since your assets are nothing like those of a resort giant like Marriott. However, this lesson should be used by every dentist who wishes to build a veil around their assets and practice. All over the country, business owners are discovering the benefits of establishing multiple legal entities in an effort to alleviate the risk of civil litigation. Building an asset defense strategy is paramount, and must be done before you are facing unintended consequences. While most dentists will not be sued as often as global hotel chains, plaintiffs are winning million-dollar judgments against dentists. Cases range from allergic reactions to anesthesia, failure to diagnose ailments to procedures resulting in permanent nerve damage, and more. And lawsuits against dentists unrelated to dental care can be just as real (slip, trip, and fall lawsuits; wrongful termination lawsuits, sexual harassment, and discrimination claims). We live in a litigious society. Therefore, one would think that few dentists would be shortsighted enough to operate as sole proprietorship's or general partnerships, leaving themselves personally liable for a judgment. However, surveys tell us that as many as 50 percent of dentists in the United States were practicing without the benefit of legal structures, leaving them vulnerable to a host of non-medical liabilities. Whatever the actual number, any dentist practicing as sole proprietorship's is personally exposed to unlimited legal liability in their business operations. Being in business without legal protection is like riding a motorcycle without protective headgear – all it takes is one incident. What might not be obvious to the dentists who are operating under one all-inclusive legal identity — such as a professional corporation, or PC, a professional association, or a Professional limited liability company — could be just as risky. I knew one doctor who had more than $2 million in his professional corporation’s accounts receivable. Another dentist told me he held almost $1 million worth of real estate owned by his professional corporation. One lawsuit against these professional corporations could result in a total loss of the corporation’s assets. Many corporations have learned (the hard way) that combining business assets with business operations in one legal entity, they risk losing everything in a single lawsuit. The new rule of lawsuit protection is simple: Keep your business assets separate from your business operations. So, how does one achieve this measure of protection? Simple, cash-rich assets such as buildings and land should be kept in separate legal entities, such as limited partnerships or limited liability companies. Otherwise, one lawsuit against a dentist can drain his or her corporation entirely. Instead, professional corporations should own as few assets as possible so they do not become a target of litigation. There is no right or wrong way to diversify. There are many variables to consider: How many dentists participate in the practice? Are the building and land owned or leased? What is the value of the professional equipment? Following are some general principles dentists can use to protect themselves from lawsuits directed at either the practice or the dentist specifically. If you own land, buildings, or both, talk to your legal advisor about holding them in a distinct legal entity from your dental practice. If the same corporation owns property and operates the business, both are jeopardized by one lawsuit. Just as Marriott divided its assets into two corporations, you can limit what assets are exposed to a lawsuit by dividing your real property from your professional practice. My entity of choice for holding assets is a limited partnership, or LP. Your LP then leases the land, building, or dental equipment it owns to your professional practice corporation. Your professional practice corporation now owns no assets, but functions as your operating company: it employs your employees, pays expenses, bills insurance companies, and collects fees. Now, when a patient sues your professional corporation, it has no assets to be seized in the lawsuit. Depending on the value of the equipment in your practice, you might want to use the same principle in owning your office equipment. If everything from the lobby chairs to the CBCT machine is owned by your LLC and leased to the practice, then all of your business assets are insulated from lawsuits. With the fast rate at which dental equipment traditionally depreciates, however, smaller offices may find this unnecessary. Nevertheless, let’s say a dental office owns $400,000 in new equipment and falls victim to a judgment which forces a sale of the dental equipment. This event could effectively put this practice out of business. Let’s say the same dental practice is sued, but this time all of its assets are owned by a separate entity — perhaps the popular limited liability company. In this case, a plaintiff’s attorney would be unable to touch the business assets. Therefore, if the dental corporation is closed, the dentist is free to reopen under a different corporation and subsequently lease all the same equipment to the new practice, effectively never missing a beat. Our firm believes too many dentists operate their practices like a family business. Having helped many dentists set up their business and legal structures, this area “trips up” more dentists than any other. Suffice it to day, if dentists go to the trouble of having corporations, they need to run them like corporations. This means yearly meetings of corporate officers. It means minutes are recorded and filed at all meetings. And above all, it means spouses cannot go grocery shopping with the corporation’s checkbook. Courts can pierce the corporate veil all too easily when dentists get lazy with the details of their corporations. In case after case, dentists open themselves up for trouble when they mingle their family finances with their dental business. Also, remember that liability insurance is not perfect. Judgments may not be entirely covered by insurance policies because of payout caps or exclusions. For instance, one dentist found out a lawsuit filed against him fell under a policy exclusion. This oral surgeon was held personally responsible for more than $300,000 in a judgment. The lesson is clear: Although you may faithfully pay your malpractice premiums, nevertheless, you could have to pay a large judgment with your personal assets. Exhausted Protecting personal assets requires more than simply deeding assets to spouses. Today, courts consider these practices, in response to a lawsuit, to be a form of fraud. For this reason, a growing number of dentists title their homes, savings accounts, and investments to separate legal entities. Much like dividing land and buildings from a dental practice, some dentists wisely title their family assets to trusts, limited partnerships, or corporations. If your home is owned by a correctly drafted legal entity, it is much harder for a court to seize. Some forms of ownership, such as the LP, even can serve as a deterrent from lawsuits ever being filed against you. An LP includes wording that not only makes assets held in the partnership almost impossible to seize, but also may require the plaintiffs to pay the taxes on these items. In fact, many attorneys will retreat if they discover assets are owned by a limited partnership. The principles are simple First, divide your business assets from your business operations. Review carefully the nature of your business and professional activities. Can you logically divide the business or professional activity into two or more separate entities? For example, why does the dental practice have to include the laboratory? Why can’t the A/R be kept separate from the PC? Why must your PC also own your office? Dividing the ownership of your assets can literally save them when a lawsuit strikes. Second, keep your personal life separate from your professional life. If private and professional assets are mixed, both are made vulnerable in lawsuits. Third, structure yourself to withstand litigation before a lawsuit occurs. Any steps to rearrange your assets after a potential lawsuit occurs can be ruled fraudulent by the courts. Using asset protection principles before a problem arises, however, is seen as smart and strategic. The same measures taken after a lawsuit-prone incident occurs can be ruled evasive and fraudulent. As you restructure your assets, make sure your lawyer is fully versed in modern asset-protection principles. Equity stripping Although the idea of borrowing money from a bank when you don’t need it may seem counterproductive, when used for the purposes of “equity stripping” it not only makes sense but could be the wisest financial move you’ll ever make. It works like this: You take out a bank loan and secure it with property of your business that is shown on the balance sheet (such as equipment, real estate, a vehicle, or even receivables and inventory). Should creditors or a litigant attempt to seize the encumbered assets, they would first have to pay off the bank loan, likely rendering the entire exercise without financial gain. Despite the simplicity and rock-solid effectiveness of this strategy, rarely do we hear of financial advisors talking about this with a client. The reality is that your success and stature as the owner of a prosperous dental practice make you a target for a wide spectrum of potential misfortune. From creditors, judgments, divorce, tax audits, partnerships gone wrong—there are many forces that can quickly erode or drastically reduce your business and personal assets. Few professionals have as much to gain from asset protection as private-practicing dentists – operating with the reality of business and malpractice liabilities. There has never been a better time to consider your set of circumstances and make necessary changes to protect yourself, your practice, and your family. Sit down with your wealth management professional or financial advisor to evaluate your liabilities and insurance policies. What assets might you have overlooked, or might have grown in attractiveness to potential litigants? The quickest and most cost-effective approach to gaining blanket coverage is to take out a large umbrella policy to safeguard assets. Placing your assets in someone else’s name, such as your spouse or adult child, usually places them beyond the reach of any legal action directed at you or your business. Sole Proprietorship in Dentistry (DBA) A sole proprietorship means doing business as yourself – you and the company are the same entity for legal purposes. While it’s rare for private practices, it can be more common for associates working as independent contractors. Select CPAs may recommend a sole proprietorship for your dental practice because • You report income and losses on a 1040, not a corporate tax return. • If you start your dental practice from scratch, you can take advantage of the losses on your 1040 in the early years, likely before your business starts making and reporting a profit. Other legal and accounting professionals may advise against a sole proprietorship because • If you’re sued for medical malpractice, your personal assets can be taken. • It makes the web of personal and professional finances very difficult to separate. • Your personal credit is at risk. • As an associate, your profits are subject to self-employment tax; you will pay payroll taxes as an employee and an employer. • You will pay more in Social Security and Medicare taxes. Professional Corporation (PC) A Professional Corporation (“P.C.”) is simply a corporation for licensed professionals, like doctors or lawyers. This structure can be appealing to a single dentist because • Financials clear – your income is separate from the practice’s income and profits. • The corporation can provide health insurance to you as its employee and deduct the cost as a business expense. • Caps on self-employment taxes. Because of its corporation status, however, PCs • Require more paperwork. • Require formal annual meetings. • Pay franchise taxes. A Professional Limited Liability Company (PLLC) A group of licensed professionals that want to form an LLC must form a PLLC which ensures that all managers of the entity must be of the same licensed profession. PLLCs are often recommended for dentists opening/starting a new practice: • PLLCs offer the tax and liability advantages of a corporation • They are generally considered to have less of an administrative burden, meaning less paperwork. Drawbacks of a PLLC include: • A dentist’s Medicare and self-employment tax liability is capped based upon the profitability of the practice, not personal income, so the tax burden will likely be higher. Making the S-Election for Dentists? An S-Corp is often referred to as an entity. However, Sub-Chapter S is actually a federal election and doesn’t affect how the state sees your business. It does, however effect the taxation for you and your practice. Electing an S-Corp may be advisable • Because only the income paid to employees is subject to employment taxes. Other distributions made to owners are not considered wages and aren’t taxed as such. • If you’ve selected to form a PLLC. Because of the self-employment tax savings mentioned above, it can be a good match for a PLLC, which has less burdensome administrative requirements making for a ‘best of both worlds’ match.

And we really pride ourselves in taking care of our associates. Deborah Marriott Harrison, Global Cultural Ambassador Emeritus Marriott International (r) and host Andy Ockershausen (l) in-studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Our Town. And I'm so delighted to have in one of the most important people in representing the families and I could probably, the number one family in Washington was the Marriott family, and I'm so delighted to have Debbie Marriott Harrison on Our Town. Welcome to Our Town, Debbie. Deborah Marriott Harrison: Thank you Andy. I'm delighted to be here. Andy Ockershausen: Well, our relationship, my relationship personally goes back to Marriott for many, many years before you were born, probably. Because being a big part of Our Town growing up at WMAL and Channel 7 and the Washington Star is my background, and you know what the Star was like when you were growing up in Our Town and- Deborah Marriott Harrison: Yeah, my brothers used to deliver the paper. Andy Ockershausen: I say, right. It was Our Town. It was a small town. What's happened now has been an explosion. But thank you for remembering that there is a WMAL that was in Our Town and thank you for what you have done for the Marriott Corporation and particularly when you worked at ... your story was working at the Key Bridge Marriott? Marriott's First Two Hotels - Twin Bridges and Key Bridge Hotels - A Bit of Our Town History Deborah Harrison: Yes. Andy Ockershausen: How many years? Deborah Marriott Harrison: Oh, just one summer after I had finished my freshman year. Andy Ockershausen: Oh, you just did it in the summer time. Deborah Marriott Harrison: Yes. I just did it for the summer and that was our second hotel and it is still our oldest hotel in our portfolio because the first hotel was the Twin Bridges Hotel. Andy Ockershausen: Do I remember that well. Deborah Marriott Harrison: Yeah. Opened in 1957 near the 14th Street Bridge and we sold that in the late 80s and there's nothing on that lot right now. It's an empty lot. Andy Ockershausen: The Windjammer Club. Deborah Marriott Harrison: Yes, The Windjammer Club. And- Andy Ockershausen: It was a bottle club I remember that well. Deborah Marriott Harrison: Sirloin and Saddle, the restaurant. Andy Ockershausen: Well, the motel opened up where it used to be a national airport and before national airport there was another field there- Deborah Harrison: Right. Hoover. Andy Ockershausen: Were Marriott had a catering business. Deborah Marriott Harrison: Yup. Hoover Field. And the Pentagon is, and the Pentagon is there now. Andy Ockershausen: And yeah. Right. And so that was the beginning of the catering business, but the hotel business, your grandfather opened that hotel, I remember it had a sign. It was the only sign I've ever seen on the 14th Street Bridge and the Washington signs, at the exit to get to the Marriott Hotel. Can you ... you were too young to know that. Deborah Marriott Harrison: I don't remember that. You're right. I don't remember. That's really neat. Andy Ockershausen: There was some political pressure to get that done. But it was done. The only motel that was highlighted on the bridge leaving town, was the Marriott Twin Bridges. And there were twin bridges and then Marriott got into the hotel business and then opened up in Rosslyn. Was that your next big hotel? Deborah Marriott Harrison: The next one, two years later was the one was Key Bridge in Rosslyn overlooking Georgetown and the river. Andy Ockershausen: And it was a real, a motor hotel. It was a small structure. Marriott Started Out in the Hotel Business with Motor Hotels

Gary Cohen: That's correct. Andy Ockershausen: Why would you leave SUNY and come to Northern Virginia? Gary Cohen: I got my first my first job experience, my first job offer, excuse me, from the Marriott Corporation. They ran a group of restaurants down here. Some of you that have been around a long time might remember them, Joshua Tree and Phineas Prime Rib and some of those old restaurants. I joined them out of college and it's a funny story when I joined them. People said to me, "Why do you want to move to Washington? You've never left Long Island in your life?" I said to them- Andy Ockershausen: Yeah, that is strange. Gary Cohen: I said to them, "I don't want to spend my life on 495, the Long Island Expressway," so I come down here and now I spend my life on 495 the Beltway. Andy Ockershausen: Well, you picked the right people to go to work with because they are farsighted and they were growing. That's part of Our Town is Marriott, of course. Gary Cohen: Sure. Andy Ockershausen: The children were born here. The family was here. I knew Mr. Marriott through a lot of charity work that we did with him and he was a fine man. A Start with Marriott - The Joshua Tree Gary Cohen: In those days, they were trying to diversify and they had their hotel division. They had what they called their "dinner house restaurant division." I worked. I was by the dinner house restaurant division. Creating Magic in Your Life and Business to Live a Life of Abundance!Creating Magic may sound mystical and bit far fetched. However, if you've ever experienced the magic at Disney World Resort, you know it's real. Well, at least it seems real. Our feature guest today, Lee Cockerell, is one of many who make the magic happen at Disney World and many other organizations around the world. Even the US Military has endured the magic Lee Cockerell brings to leadership. Meet our Feature GuestLee Cockerell is the former Executive Vice President of Operations for the Walt Disney World® Resort. "As the Senior Operating Executive for ten years Lee led a team of 40,000 Cast Members and was responsible for the operations of 20 resort hotels, 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, a shopping & entertainment village and the ESPN sports and recreation complex in addition to the ancillary operations which supported the number one vacation destination in the world." One of Lee's major and lasting legacies was the creation of Disney Great Leader Strategies which was used to train and develop the 7000 leaders at Walt Disney World. Lee has held various executive positions in the hospitality and entertainment business with Hilton Hotels for 8 years and the Marriott Corporation for 17 years before joining Disney in 1990 to open the Disneyland Paris project. Lee has served as Chairman of the Board of Heart of Florida United Way, the Board of Trustees for The Culinary Institute of America (CIA), the board of the Production and Operations Management Society and the board of Reptilia a Canadian attractions and entertainment company. In 2005 Governor Bush appointed Lee to the Governor's Commission on Volunteerism and Public Service for the state of Florida where he served as Chairman of the Board. He is now dedicating his time to public speaking, authoring a book on leadership, management and service excellence titled, Creating Magic…10 Common Sense Leadership Strategies from a Life at Disney. Which is now available in 13 languages and his latest book, The Customer Rules…The 39 Essential Rules for Delivering Sensational Service. I show you how to generate all the leads you can possibly handle by evaluating your existing marketing and showing you how to dramatically reduce or eliminate the money you’re currently spending while significantly increasing both your response and conversion rates. I can typically double or triple your current response rate...but a 50 to 100 times increase isn’t out of the question. And best of all, the strategies I'll teach you will continue to work for you month after month for as long as you're in business. But listen, I know talk is cheap... and I know that you’ve heard these types of claims before, so put me to the test and let me prove that everything I've just said is 100% true. If you will invest just 45 minutes with me, I promise that I will find you at least $10,000 in additional revenue that you can begin to put in your pocket this month... and every month moving forward. We can do this 45 minute session over the phone as an added convenience to you... and I promise during the time we're together that I won't try to sell you a thing. But there is one catch. I'm writing a book detailing the strategies I use to find $10,000 for any small business owner, and my publisher has asked me to include a few additional case studies in my book. I would ask... In Jennifers first episode # (https://remarkableresults.biz/e176/) she lays out the base of TechForce and the Futur Tech Success Campaign. This episode is an update to the program and brings you the powerful metrics from the Beauru of Labor Statistics as to the number of technicians needed to fill the ranks in the next 10 years. Key Episode Talking Points: The Technician Shortage, how do you fix the problem using the Tech Force Foundation? The data is updated to see the gravity of the problem/solution. A three-fold change (increase) in the demand for technicians The real need is 75,900 demand over a ten year period. Acronym Mentioned: CTE – Career and Technical Education. Why does all this matter: There is a real demand to put resources behind it. There are many jobs that exist in the future and the numbers reflect it. We need to be sure they are good paying jobs by running better operations. We must collaborate to accomplish a positive force in the industry. We do not have enough young people who want to enter the industry for a myriad of reasons. We are a professional industry and that message needs to get through. Mentoring, Speaking, Training Aids all needed. Tech Force and the Future Tech Success Campaign will create a central resource. Kathleen Matthews on being a Democrat in Our Town~ "I'm a Democrat, and the Democrats in this area really care about our country, and they’re trying to figure out how they make a difference in the current political environment. And I’m all about being part of that process, and helping give voice to the values that I think are so important." Kathleen Matthews, DNC-MD Chairwoman, (right) and Andy Ockershausen, Our Town host (left) A Ockershausen: I met our very special guest probably 40 years ago or close to it, in the lobby at WMAL, she was waiting for an interview. I want her to tell that story. To me she was Kathy Cunningham, but over the 40 years that she has been in Our Town, she's accomplished so much. You know, far less being the anchor at WMAL-TV, but WJLA. I still call it WMAL-TV. She had a top level position at the Marriott Corporation. She ran for Congress, and she's going to be named Head of the Democratic Party for the state of Maryland. But my friend and very dear friend, Kathleen Matthews. Welcome to Our Town. Kathleen Matthews: Hey Andy, how are you? It's good to be here. A Ockershausen: Well your first day on the job was at WMAL. I knew that you had gone to Stanford, and you had a great educational background. I said why would this woman with all this talent, want to work at this radio station? And you came in the lobby. From Stanford to Washington DC and WMAL AM630 Kathleen Matthews: So I have to tell you, that as I came into the lobby up from the first floor, through the elevator. I felt like I was going in this time-warp. It was still so familiar to me, and I will never forget getting off that elevator, coming into the lobby, and hearing the voices of Harden and Weaver, and the incredible electricity that this place exuded. It was joyous. It was fun. And I had been looking for a job for a couple of months, having graduated from Stanford. A Ockershausen: Great school. Kathleen Matthews: Coming across country, wanting to be in the nation's capital because I was passionate about politics. I wanted a new adventure, and I really believed in journalism. Because this was after Watergate. This was after Woodward and Bernstein had broken open the whole Watergate crisis, and Nixon had resigned. And Washington was like the center of the universe at that point. And so here I was in Washington, in this amazing environment. And I walked in the door, and I thought if I can work in this place, I will be the luckiest woman on earth. And I came in and did a series of interviews. And I remember meeting you too, because you've got that same energy that really represented what WMAL radio was at that time. A Ockershausen: It was electric. Kathleen Matthews: Radio 63, I mean it was the most listened to radio station. It had a huge robust news department, amazing public affairs department. They did documentaries on the air, and also then the Great Talk, and it was so much a part of this community. And the job I was interviewing for was called, "editorial director". It was an entry-level job, but it sounded so important. And my job was to do the research on issues, and then write editorials for the station management. And in those days, 40 years ago, we were editorializing get the guns off the streets of Washington. A Ockershausen: Oh absolutely. Editorials were on Guns and Metro Kathleen Matthews: We talked about this being Dodge City. D.C. was Dodge City. And so we said, "Get the guns off the street." We said, "Let's build a metro-system. We need funding to be able to build a metro-system for the nation's capital." I mean, think about what the city was like back then, and where we are today. A Ockershausen: Kathleen, but all the things you talk about were so important, because the electricity that you felt was from the people in the newsroom. They loved what they did. You know I used to kid some of them about, "You know you're probably making a dollar an hour because you're here 20 hours a day.
