Matt Stephens is impressed by David O'Doherty's cycling knowledge, and in particular, his obsession with the racing bikes of the late 1980's that's led him to own a collection so big he now operates on a ‘one in one out' basis. David is famous for being one of the most successful Irish stand up comedians of all time, with a host of awards and appearances on QI, 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Would I Lie To You, and the upcoming series of Celebrity Bake Off. But given his chosen subject on Celebrity Mastermind was The First 100 Years of The Tour De France, surely he'll ace the hometown quiz?

Stuart MacBride was born in Dumbarton and raised in Aberdeen; abandoning his studies to become an architect, he went to work on the oil rigs, scrubbing toilets. He then tried out careers as an actor, a web designer, and a computer programmer, all the while writing away after work – he wrote four novels before his first, Cold Granite, was published in 2005. Since then, he's become one of our most successful and prolific crime writers, with twenty-four titles in all, sometimes labelled as “tartan noir”. His latest, about the hunt for a serial killer, is called No Less the Devil. Reviewers say things like “this isn't a novel to read over dinner”, or “slick, gruesome and brutally intelligent.” Gruesome crime-writing apart, Stuart MacBride's other notable achievements include winning Celebrity Mastermind (his subject was A.A. Milne) and coming first in the World Stovies Championship. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Stuart MacBride reveals how his “very dull” childhood developed his imagination as a writer, and how he first discovered crime fiction in the Aberdeen public library. He went to the library every day, read under the covers at night, and borrowed new books the following morning, moving on from the Hardy Boys to Dashiell Hammett. For Stuart MacBride, music is essential; he listens continually when he works, and his latest novel was written entirely to the soundtrack of Wagner's Ring. Alongside Wagner, choices include Beethoven, Purcell, Bruch and Holst. He also introduces music by the Australian composer Sean O'Boyle, a concerto for didgeridoo, which he loves because it's so dark. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 3

Are you a 'flusher' or a ‘binner'? We're talking about getting rid of tampons and towels. What makes you decide whether to flip that bin lid, or just drop and flush? New research is out which says 2.4 million tampons are flushed down UK toilets every day leading to sewer blockages and pollution. We talk to Martha Silcott who's developed a simple product to encourage you to bin and Daisy Buchanan who says more needs to be done to make a product which flushes without causing environmental harm. She's finally arrived! Ms Marvel the latest character from the Marvel universe. What's special about her? Marvel's first Muslim superhero. Newcomer Iman Vellani, stars as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel. We also have Martine Croxall, BBC news presenter who was chose Nellie Bly as her specialist subject on Celebrity Mastermind. Last year we talked about "Hot Girl Summer". Olivia Petter, relationships writer at The Independent and Lydia Venn, Features Editor at The Tab discuss.

Andi Osho is what the cool kids of our day would call your typical "Slashie", meaning she cannot be defined by just one occupation. She is an award-winning comedian, writer, actress and on top of that she is the only person to win Celebrity Mastermind, not once, but twice. For the past eighteen years Andi has graced our screens in a variety of ways from comedy shows such as Live at the Apollo and Mock of the Week, to dramas such as Michaela Coel's HBO/BBC, I May Destroy You and BBC 1's Line of Duty. In this episode, we discuss everything from Andi's drive to continue to innovate herself even when the road ahead is not clear, her frustration with the comedy world as a Black woman and how she is now at peace with the idea of not having her own children. We're also joined by dietitian Ruth Wood, who gives us some insight into the best foods and nutrients for us and why that 7pm spin class might not be the best idea after all.

He serves it with boundless charm and an engaging twinkle of the eye.You might also have found him as the amiable and accomplished host on the local version of the UK quiz success, Pointless. The television platform seems the likely home for Humphries who grew up with an appetite for television variety and who is the son of a former ABC weatherman. Early forays into a television studio ignited an ambition to entertain and amuse.Humphries also hosts a passion for musical theatre. He was recently triumphant in the series of Celebrity Mastermind where his special subject, was The Musicals of Stephen Sondheim. His charm and personality are reminiscent of the television Gods of yesteryear, but with an essential contemporary edge. He is equipped with a smile as broad as a bridge, a mischievous glint that hints at naughty and a masterful way with words - indelible assets for satirical comedy and television variety. He spoke with Stages examining the challenge of writing and delivering comedy in present times, quiz shows and of course, the magic of the musical.
So. This podcast episode almost didn't happen because I'd forgotten to put it into my iCal (I find any diary that isn't paper so confusing, don't you?) and on the allotted day, I had a text from sound engineer Chris saying 'We're outside!'. Needless to say, I was not inside. I was half-an-hour away having breakfast with my friend Viv. It is a testament to Adam Pearson's kindness that, when I spoke to him, harassed and sweating as I ran for the train, he didn't seem remotely put out. 'It's very on-brand to fail at turning up,' he quipped. Anyway, I'm so glad Adam stuck around because when we did sit down to record this interview, he was utterly phenomenal. Adam is a broadcaster, actor, campaigner and documentary-maker (and also Celebrity Mastermind champion) who has lived for most of his life with the incurable genetic condition, neurofibromatosis which causes benign tumours to grow along the nerves. In his case, the tumours are mostly on his face and they have severely affected his physical appearance since the age of five. Adam joins me to talk about what his condition has taught him: from standing up to bullies at school to confronting the people filming him on their cameraphones when he ventures outside. He talks about the discrimination, the name-calling and how he has managed to channel his anger into changing the world for the better. Along the way, we discuss the pressures of social media in a culture that has learned to value superficial aesthetic 'perfection' at the cost of other, more meaningful characteristics. And we talk about his failure at dating, which involves once taking a Swedish woman to Ikea (it seemed like a good idea at the time) and possibly the most offensive joke you'll ever hear about why he was barred from eHarmony - listeners of a sensitive disposition might like to turn away for that bit, but I've left it in because it will give you a sense of Adam's humour, which is an integral part of how he has learned to survive. I hope you enjoy the episode. PODCAST 49 AND FEELIN' FINE.What can I say, about Rick O'Shea?(#poetry) He has worked in Irish radio for almost 25 years and has achieved so much in that time. His book club is hugely popular and he is constantly working at book festivals, talking to authors and reading ceaselessly which sounds like a ruddy dream life.Rick and I sat under a tree outside RTE Radio Centre earlier this summer with the Fair City set in the background and it was wonderful to get to chat with him about his long and winding career. They discuss pant retirement etiquette, being in a double act that actually like each other (for now), the curse of the Independent comedy couples photo shoot, the most money that's ever changed hands for GCSE art coursework, the power of being a fan, Celebrity Mastermind humiliations and how not to respond to criticism. In a festive first we pit BBC Washington Correspondent Gary O’Donoghue against Watchdog’s Nikki Fox and BBC Ouch’s Simon Minty in a ferocious battle over disability dilemmas. Would they disturb a couple getting close in an accessible loo if they were desperate? Would they swipe left or right on a dating app if the person in question was also disabled and we get the lowdown on the horror stories of appearing on Celebrity Mastermind. Presented by Beth Rose. Produced and edited by Emma Tracey and Helen Weaver.
Robins had a bit of a night of it last night. Classic Robins. That didn’t stop a complete Hammer show from taking shape though. Elis gave yet more tasty insight into the British film industry and the Queen questions came thick and fast in preparation for John’s appearance on Celebrity Mastermind. There were some quallo emails this week too, as well as the usual Humblebrags, Shame Well and a Mod or Rocker Made Up Game! Remember, you can get in touch on Saturday@radiox.co.uk (if you’re on e-mail. You’ve got to be on e-mail), and you can tune in across the UK every Saturday from 1pm til 4pm! Keep it session. Wine Show TV host and IWSC Wine Communicator of the Year, Joe Fattorini, absolutely charms the W25 ladies this week. A gifted storyteller, Joe fills us in on some of the striking stories behind Season Two of Wine Show TV, and shares the single most stupid thing you could do when running the Bordeaux Marathon. Speaking of marathons, this episode is worth the trip - we go long and laugh hard. Joe’s not only won the BBC’s Celebrity Mastermind, but also our most embarrassing wine story honour to date. Show notes at WineTwoFive.com Joe Fattorini, Wine Education, Wine Show TV, Wine Stories, Podcasts, Wine Writing, Entertainment

With Kirsty Lang. Two versions of Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers have been reunited for the first time in more than sixty years. Sunflowers is one of The National Gallery's best-loved paintings and it will be shown alongside another version from the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. Art critic Martin Bailey discusses what seeing the paintings side-by-side tells us about Van Gogh's methods, and why the paintings are so captivating. In the film, Grudge Match, Hollywood heavyweights Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone star as old boxing rivals who come out of retirement for one final match. Hal Cruttenden, comedian and recent winner of Celebrity Mastermind - with, as his specialist subject, The Rocky Films - reviews. Author and political cartoonist, Chris Riddell, discusses his gothic novel for eight year olds, Goth Girl: And The Ghost Of A Mouse, which has won the children's category for the Costa Book Awards. Chris Riddell talks about the overlap between the world of Westminster and children's books, and his love of puns and literary references - including the ghost of a mouse who says "call me Ishmael". Following the publication of Justin Bieber's surprisingly cheerful police mug-shot, Daily Mail columnist Viv Groskop joins Kirsty to assess the art of the celebrity mug-shot. Theatre director, Max Stafford-Clark, former Artistic Director of The Royal Court, talks about his new book, Journal Of The Plague Year. Described as a 'howl of rage' against the drastic funding cuts to his renowned theatre company, Out Of Joint, the book details Max's correspondence with the Arts Council, and he makes his case to Kirsty for public funding of the arts. Producer: Rebecca Nicholson.
RHEFP 2013 #12: Bo Burnham, Milton Jones and Paul Gannon - Deus Ex Machina. Apologies to completists, but the first couple of minutes of today's podcast got lost in a recording malfunction, but only cos Jerry spotted it was recording wrong, so in fact the majority has been saved, rather than a little bit lost. Hopefully from thereon in it's OK as Rich chatted to Milton Jones about whether comedians need writers, Planet Mirth, Celebrity Mastermind and Christianity. Paul Gannon comes on to do a set about ghosts, before a now non-jet-lagged Bo Burnham finally makes an appearance to discuss how it's possible for the internet to turn you into a global megastar (nonsense), who chose the paint in his bedroom, cockroaches in his sink and offensiveness in comedy (real, imagined and made-up). If anyone has illegally taped the show the lost bit may be reattached, but otherwise only the people who were actually there will get to witness an underwhelming piece of non-magic and hear about the Me1 Vs Me2 Snooker Podcast (also available on British Comedy Guide and iTunes).
Rich is coping with the imminent closure of the Tempting Tattie and with having had his second Celebrity Mastermind nightmare of the month, but luckily Simon Munnery is on hand to out Top Trump Rich on numbers of Fringes plus talk of what happens if you drink half a jar of Nescafe in one pint of water, Edinburgh feuds with unlikely foes, future movie stars falling face first into bowls of porridge, airships and what it's like to act as Banksy's lawyer. It's amazing stuff. And if that wasn't enough Matt Green is on hand for five minutes of stand-up and one lucky sinister fella is going to win a 25 Euro voucher to buy left-handed items at On The Other Hand - www.ontheotherhand.ie - if you come tomorrow you could win another one!
It's episode 9 of RHEFP and Richard is tired and not in the mood, but then audibly surprised at how well his half-arsed opening monologue goes down and he's rejuvenated and full of beans from then on in. He has tales of the changes that take place in 24 years in a chip shop, plus too much information about the actresses he has gone out with and the princess that he failed to seduce. His guest, Paul Sinha, is less impressively one degree of separation from celebrity fellatio (alas not Keith Allen) and used to fancy Richard before 'The King of Edinburgh' (Three Weeks) got too fat and old. Rich chastises Jack Whitehall for obvious plagiarism, is reminded of his cruel Celebrity Mastermind defeat and takes us back to 1995 when he was looking at his immaturity in Richard Herring is All Man. CJ from Eggheads rears his ugly egghead as well and there's some unpleasant stuff about how to improve the film Love Actually with sexual assault. With stand-up from Tania Edwards. Also there's a Kenneth Kendal health and sexuality update.
We've made it to episode 22, but will we get any further. And are the dark secrets of the twisting and turning Lost-style over-arching plot about to be revealed? Or will we just make far too much of the first birthday of the cumpkin? And did Rich take the lunch marmalade millions? Emma has tales of the 1970s and groping, whilst Dan reveals the singular of paparazzi and Christian has been the victim of crime. Richard's writing process is the subject of a soul searching documentary and he also looks forward with fear to his forthcoming appearance on Celebrity Mastermind, whilst looking back at his romantic trip to Prague, with deluxe clocks and cloacas all on view. Ultimately Richard may be about to discover the very meaning of (or lack of) his existence? Is this the end? For AIOTM and for Stephen Fry's Twitter account? If only we could turn forward time.
