Send us a textVocalist Sonya Leigh Surrett played piano and drums as a kid. As an adult, she wondered one night how musicians joined bands. By chance, a band clocked her at a karaoke night singing “Dog and Butterfly” by the rock group Heart. She talked to the guitar player, mentioned she had bought a new electronic drum set, and received an offer to play drums for the group. They liked her enough to bring her into a gig a few months later, for which she learned 40 songs on drums in a couple of weeks.Bassist Scott “Scottie Blue Sky” Rogers, meanwhile, was told by his father that he wasn't smart enough to be a musician. It wasn't until his adult years, recovering from a knee injury, that his first wife bought him a short scale bass, and during recovery, his friends came over and taught him how to play. Eventually, a group he played with was signed to a major label, and they started touring. Once touring wrapped up, Rogers moved to Denver, a place that stuck out to him during the tour.Rogers worked on Surrett's sprinklers after moving there, and after a while, it became clear there was more to their connection. They ultimately married in December of 2012, having discovered their mutual love of music. After playing together for a while, a connection in McCarthy's Pub in Longmont asked the two to put together an all-stars show. Gathering friends and creating a setlist, they formed a lineup ultimately dubbed Sisters of Rock. The name came from two of the original members, who were actually sisters. It has nothing to do with a lesser-known 90s song by Little Sister titled “Sisters of Rock,” but was rather inspired by the majority of the lineup consisting of women and the desire to make the band feel like a family. However, Sisters of Rock is an offshoot of the Heart tribute group Dreamboat Annie, which lifted its name from Heart's 1975 album. Ann Wilson is the powerhouse lead singer of the band Heart, whose celebrated classic debut album, Dreamboat Annie, came out nearly 50 years ago. Last week we featured an interview with her sister and longtime bandmate Nancy Wilson, so make sure to check that out if you haven't already. Today we'll hear from Ann, who's responsible for belting out and co-writing some of Heart's most iconic early hits, like “Magic Man,” “Barracuda,” and “Crazy On You.” Four years older than Nancy, Ann was the first Wilson sister to join Heart, a band that started out as a cabaret cover band. Despite undergoing multiple lineup changes since the '70s, Heart has released top 10 albums in nearly every decade in the last 50 years, and sold over 20 million albums worldwide. Outside of Heart, Ann has also released solo material, including an album in 2023 with her band, Tripsitter. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Ann Wilson about Heart's current world tour, and the Elton John album she sings before every show to warm up her voice. Ann also explains how she would strategically place guitars around her house when having parties at her Seattle home in the '90s to encourage jam sessions with guests like Lane Staley and Chris Cornell. And she remembers singing on stage with Grace Slick and Stevie Nicks, who Ann says really is a good witch. Guitarist and songwriter Nancy Wilson is one half of the rock band Heart, along with her older sister Ann Wilson. Nancy and Ann have been the face of the band since the mid-70s. Heart's first album, Dreamboat Annie, was released in 1976 right as the band was making traction opening for big acts like Rod Stewart and The Bee Gees. Soon their songs, like “Magic Man” and “Crazy On You,” started to take off in the States, and Heart quickly became a headlining act. Nearly 50 years since their debut album, Heart has experienced career highs—like a string of chart-topping hits and an induction into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame—as well as their fair share of personal and professional adversity. Today Ann and Nancy remain steadfast in continuing Heart's legacy. This month they embarked on a world tour—their first in five years. To celebrate Ann and Nancy Wilson's massive contribution to rock n roll history, we will feature conversations with both sisters over the next two weeks. Today we'll hear Leah Rose talk to Nancy about how the popular drugs of the ‘70s and ‘80s influenced Heart's sound. She also describes how being accepted by the musicians of Seattle's grunge scene helped her overcome Heart's fraught experience recording power ballads in the ‘80s. And she describes the lo-fi setup she used to score the soundtracks of her ex-husband Cameron Crowe's hit movies: Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, and Jerry McGuire. The apparent theft of two horses the night of Dec. 10-11 from property in the Tower Lake area north of Floresville has prompted an investigation by the Wilson County Sheriff's Office. A barbed-wire fence surrounding the field where the horses are kept appears to have been cut, Chief Deputy Clint Garza told the Wilson County News. Tire tracks also were found near where the fence was cut. “The tire tracks were leading in a direction that the property owners do not travel when leaving their residence,” Garza added. For this first episode of Season 3, we are joined by Ann Wilson. Known the world over as a founder and the lead singer-songwriter of the barrier-breaking band Heart, she is widely praised among the greatest singers in the history of rock. Her extraordinarily powerful voice has been sending chills down her audience's collective spine for over five decades, earning record sales of more than $35 million, an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. “Barracuda,” “Crazy On You,” and “Magic Man” are among the many songs she's written that now reside in the pantheon of rock's greatest hits. This past year, Ann sang with Disturbed's front man David Draiman on the duet, “Don't Tell Me" from their recently released Divisive album, and lent her voice to Dolly Parton's forthcoming rock record. From Dreamboat Annie to Disturbed, to Dolly Parton and beyond, Ann Wilson defies genre. This week we have the privilege of speaking with two original members of the band Heart -- bass player Steve Fossen and drummer Michael Derosier! Steve and Mike played on the first six Heart albums, from 1975 to 1982, and can be heard on hits like "Crazy On You", "Magic Man", "Dreamboat Annie", "Barracuda", "Love Alive", "Straight On", "Dog and Butterfly", "Even it Up", and more! They recount stories of the band's origin, recording some of the band's biggest hits (and a couple of deep tracks too!), going from playing clubs in Vancouver to stadiums all over the world, and some of their adventures on the road. We are then joined by Steve's wife, vocalist Somar Macek, to talk about their current band, Heart By Heart, which is resurrecting all the great music from Heart's iconic original era! PART ONE:Paul and Scott reflect on returning to large-scale concerts, and talk about their recent experiences seeing Paul McCartney and Pearl Jam.PART TWO: Our in-depth conversation with Ann WilsonABOUT ANN WILSON:Four-time Grammy nominee and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Ann Wilson is best known as the lead singer and co-songwriter for the band Heart, which she and her sister Nancy formed in 1973 and propelled to rock superstardom. One of the pioneering female-fronted rock bands, Heart's self-penned classics include “Crazy On You,” “Magic Man,” “Dreamboat Annie,” “Barracuda,” “Little Queen,” “Heartless,” “Straight On,” “Dog & Butterfly,” and “Even It Up.” In the mid-1980s they reinvented themselves as mainstream radio hitmakers with a string of successful singles, including “What About Love,” “Never,” “These Dreams,” “Nothin' at All,” “Alone,” “Who Will You Run To,” “There's the Girl,” “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You,” and “Stranded.” As Heart, Ann and Nancy Wilson have sold more than 35 million albums worldwide. Since 2007, Ann has released three full-length studio albums and two EPs. Her most recent, Fierce Bliss, which was released at the end of April, is her first solo album to include original material.
In this episode, host Ken Womack and powerhouse rocker Ann Wilson go deep into Beatles songs and their influence on her own work, the high school politics of fandom, and what the Beatles taught her about gender as a young rocker. Wilson rose to fame alongside her younger sister, guitarist Nancy Wilson, as lead vocalist in the rock band Heart, the first hard rock group fronted by women. In their heyday, Heart released numerous albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including "Dreamboat Annie" and "Little Queen," and "Dog and Butterfly," which generated hit singles such as "Magic Man," "Crazy on You," "Barracuda," “Straight On” and “Dog and Butterfly.” The band later enjoyed commercial success with a trio of albums, including the self-titled "Heart," "Bad Animals" and "Brigade," along with a raft of hits such as “What about Love,” “Never,” “These Dreams,” “Nothin' At All,” “Who Will You Run To,” “Alone,” and “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You.” To date, Heart has sold over 35 million records. Over the years, Wilson has earned her place as one of rock's most vaunted singers. Known for her operatic abilities and banshee screams, she was ranked no. 78 in Hit Parader's 2006 list of Greatest Heavy Metal Vocalists of All Time. And in 2013, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Heart. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/everythingfabfour/support

A microphone is a good enough platform for getting back at people, but an entire recording studio is even better. Popular music is littered with songs getting back at an ex lover, from Waylon Jennings to Taylor Swift, but a fair number of the tracks you know by heart are actually clap-backs to the people in the mixing booth or the record label offices. This week, part 2 of our 1978 interview with Paul McCartney as Paul talks about the joy of songwriting and striving for inner peace. We also play a clip from Christopher’s 1989 interview with Sir Paul as he discusses the creation of the classic “Eleanor Rigby”. We also have Tom’s brand new interview with Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies. Ed remembers the early days of the band with Steven Page and explains why onstage mistakes are sometimes the most memorable part of a performance. We also discuss how BNL made the cheapest video of all time (which ended up in high rotation on MuchMusic) and why the band was really let down by Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc from “Friends”. It’s a great chat. And we close out the show with some amazing ‘70s audio from Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart. Ann talks about the stories behind some of their biggest hits (including “Dreamboat Annie”) and how being sisters goes a long way to solving their biggest issues.
On this episode Trevor and Shane dive into Heart's classic 1975 Album Dreamboat Annie. They discuss the amazing origin story that lead to their success, dive into the history of the familial ties and love story, and rediscover classic favorites and tracks that they weren't as familiar with before.
Sound & Vision’s series, “Northwest Classics,” dives into the stories behind iconic records from the Pacific Northwest. In today’s edition, KEXP DJ Marco Collins and music journalist and author, Charles R Cross discuss Heart’s album, ‘Dreamboat Annie’ and Soundgarden’s record, ‘Superunknown.’ Support the show.
Heart hailed from and played in the Seattle area, but recorded this debut single in Vancouver, Canada. Dreamboat Annie appeared in Canada in the summer of 1975 and debuted in America on Valentine's Day 1976. In a male-oriented rock world the unusual sound of a female-fronted rock ensemble would both draw appeal and create friction that would drive a wedge between the group and their original Mushroom Studios label and propel them on to further success. Heart would go on to be almost a celebrity group in the MTV age of the 80's, but chafed against the insulting sexuality that the video producer's preferred.Ann Wilson is the lead singer and her sister Nancy is on guitar. Magic ManThe synth-driven track would be their second single released in both the U.S. and Canada, following different first singles in both countries. This song is about Mike Fisher, Ann's boyfriend at the time, and is somewhat autobiographical.Crazy On YouThis track would be the first single released in the U.S. Nancy's guitar work serves as a prelude to the song. This song is also about Mike Fisher, and about a culture that appeared to be falling apart with the Vietnam War, gas shortages, and other crises of the 70's. Nancy references the Moody Blues as an inspiration for this song.Soul of the SeaThis deep track is a softer, peaceful sound, again led by Nancy Wilson's guitar. It has a prog rock feel in multiple movements.Dreamboat AnnieThe album's title track is a less rock oriented and more acoustic and harmonic feel. It was released in four cuts - an acoustic version, the album version, a reprise, and a sequel. It hit number 17 on the adult contemporary chart. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series S.W.A.T. by Rhythm HeritageA radio charting track with a funky beat announced the start of the late night cop show.STAFF PICKS:“December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” by The Four SeasonsBruce's staff pick is the highest and last charting song by the Four Seasons. It hit #1 in March of 1976. The song was originally entitled "December 5th, 1933" and marked the repeal of Prohibition, but Frankie Valli persuaded keyboardist and writer Bob Gaudio to change it to a more nostalgic homage to Gaudio's affair with his soon-to-be-wife in the sixties.“Squeeze Box” by The WhoRob features the double entendre-filled hit from Pete Townshend that made it to #16 on the Billboard 100. Townshend wrote it after learning the accordion, and was surprised both that The Who recorded it, and that it was a hit.“Never Been Any Reason” by Head EastWayne's staff pick cranks up the 70's volume with this one-hit wonder. The song was recorded on their own label, as the band wanted to record this anthem their way.“Dream Weaver” by Gary WrightBrian's staff pick drifts into the Eastern-influenced music. In 1972 Wright accompanied George Harrison to India, and was inspired by the Indian culture and philosophy. Though Wright wrote the song on his guitar in about an hour, the track itself has no guitar. The song went to number 2 on the charts. COMEDY TRACK:“The White Knight” by Cledus Maggard and The Citizen's BandWe finish off this week's podcast with a CB-inspired comedy track which serves as a cautionary tale about relying too much on reports about the police from the CB radio.

Michael formed a sound company, Proshow USA which gave him an opportunity to work alongside some of the greatest entertainers of our time such as Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and other notables such as Bill Gates and presidents Bush and Clinton. His company has worked with many of the major artists in the music industry including providing sound production for Nirvana from their first theater shows continuing to their last show. More recently Proshow has focused on very large outdoor events around the country. Michael and Roger have committed to creating THE ONE VISION PROJECT, an ambitious endeavor that encompasses their life’s work, including an interactive web portal, four albums which draw from a catalog of more than a hundred songs, music videos, an autobiography and more. ALL TOLD was the first release to be followed by Heart Of The Blues, an album inspired by many wonderful trips to the deep south. Their band Human Tribe is performing on tour. It was a great pleasure to bring this interview with Steve Fossen to the Better Each Day listeners. He is a founding member and original bassist for Heart. His work on the albums “Dreamboat Annie,” “Little Queen,” “Magazine,” “Dog & Butterfly,” “Bebe le Strange,” as well as several greatest hits and compilations, has been a staple of radio since their releases, selling tens of millions of copies. In 2013, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honored the talents and contribution of the original six members of HEART: Ann and Nancy Wilson, Howard Leese, Roger Fisher, Steve Fossen and Michael Derosier. Steve and Mike are proving that they still have a lot of love left to give to the music world as they announce plans for their latest project – Heart By Heart. Driven to recreate the songs of HEART, while bringing the essence and purity of the group back to the stage, Heart By Heart was created to offer fans the unique experience that only those who were actually in the original band could offer. Steve Fossen, co-founder of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Heart. “With Mike and me at the helm, we can, once again, help bring out those musical nuances and ignite the energy within our own band that made HEART one of the most beloved rock groups of our time,” explained Fossen. In order to play the songs the way they were conceived, Fossen and Derosier surrounded themselves with musicians who shared their philosophy for excellence. Lead vocalist Somar Macek delivers a “jaw dropping performance” with her vocal range and stage presence. Fossen and Macek had been performing as a duo for years, often times naturally weaving their way into a HEART song as if being guided by a larger force. It was during their duo days, in fact, that Fossen actually started thinking about putting the band together. The name “Heart By Heart” came from Macek who said it signified their true feelings for one another. With the help of the legendary Randy Hansen on guitar and Seattle radio host Bob Rivers on keyboards, the band was off and running. But it wasn’t until the group was performing at a local show that they finally found what they were missing – Lizzy Daymont on guitar and vocals. “We were amazed with her musical talents and how well she knew the songs, one week later she joined us on stage as a member of Heart by Heart. In fact, when I heard Somar and Lizzy harmonize for the first time I had to hide my face because I thought I was going to cry,” said Fossen. Though not sisters they sing together as if they were. After the departure of Bob Rivers, Lizzy added keyboards to her duties, and 30-year veteran touring guitarist Chad Quist has joined in place of Randy Hansen. With the lineup complete, Heart By Heart’s mission is simple – to create music that is authentic, passionate, and true to HEART’s original recordings. After all, Fossen and Derosier, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 as members of HEART, would never do the music any injustice. “When I first discovered Heart By Heart, I thought they were just a HEART tribute band – a really, really great HEART tribute band. I was excited to meet two rock legends – Steve and Mike – and to hear the band in person. What I wasn¹t prepared for was how amazing this band sounded,” said Tom Moon, of Starleigh Entertainment. “It wasn’t just that they are all world class players and singers, they are, but what astounded me most was the authenticity with which they played the material. Heart By Heart is way beyond a tribute band, their performance is a real and impactful musical experience, once you hear what they do, you cannot help but be won over.” Heart Wikipedia Heart By Heart Home Page
