The second half of todays show preludes my next in stufio guests biography and our up coming topic for discussion his book! Biography I am an author who turned to writing after a career in the world of artificial intelligence and hi-tech software. I have spent many years researching the 1972 Andes flight disaster, first as a hobby, and then full time, leading to the publication of a comprehensive history of the event, "To Play the Game", which appeared in December 1972 - the fiftieth anniversary of the return of sixteen survivors after 72 days lost in the mountains. Desired CTA Send Audience To: This link gives information about my book, and my involvement in the Andes story. It contains links to the book and to interviews and other media interactions. About John Guiver My lifetime interest in the 1972 Andes Flight Disaster led me to travel to the site of the accident in January 2013 in the company of one of the sixteen survivors, Eduardo Strauch. Through him, I met many others connected to the story, including survivors Pedro Algorta and Coche Inciarte, whose memoirs I translated. Over the years, I have conducted numerous interviews within the close-knit passenger community, and have delved deeply into various archives, including that of Piers Paul Read who wrote the best-selling 1974 account of the tragedy, Alive. The detailed information I have amassed persuaded me to write a comprehensive history of this iconic event. "To Play the Game" retells the story both on and off the mountain, giving an in-depth look at the world from which the passengers came, and an analysis of the possible causes of the accident. The account is enriched by the stories of those who didn't return from the mountain, related through the eyes of their families, bringing much-needed balance to a history which has largely focused on the survivors. More recently, I was a guest expert on the May 2023 ABC 20/20 documentary "Prisoners of the Snow", a production for which my book was a major source. Mila White returns to the podcast, once again, to recap her “perfect” wedding with Fallon. She shares the choices she made that she'd make all over again, like spending a portion of her morning alone and having a day-of content creator who gave her & her husband the opportunity to see their wedding from a guest's POV. Then, she and Fallon answer a listener's question about wanting to enforce a color-specific dress code, but being met with opposition from friends and family. They wrap up the episode with a game of I Do or I Don't, and spoiler alert: no one's using their 2010 Pinterest board for their current-day wedding. Affordable Interior Design presents Big Design, Small Budget
It is officially the holiday season. If you're watching on YouTube, you can see behind me this light dusting of snow over my Connecticut landscape. The previous homeowner warned me he said Betsy, you are going to love this home in every season but I know the other seasons won't be as magical as the winter time. And he was not wrong. Last night, these huge flakes came down and just lightly drifted over every little thing. It just turned into a winter wonderland. In 2023, I will be dropping a brand new idea that I'm very excited about. So hopefully that'll keep you on the edge of your seats because the best ideas can come not when you're grinding in the day to day worried about payroll worried about clients worried about invoices. But when you finally step away, and are in a totally new different environment that triggers different synapses in your brain to be firing. And an idea that had been floating crystallized in my mind, and I'm so excited to share it with you. Most things in my life have come from bravely following curiosity. Not being sure, not planning too much ahead. But being curious and curious enough to do the work to see. What's that, like, you know, even as an interior designer, I just liked watching it on TV. I was like, Well, why don't I go work with somebody on TV? Why don't you just write to this person? I didn't know what it was going to be like, I didn't know the hours involved or even really much about this person. My advice to you is to bravely follow your curiosity wherever it leads, even if it leads to a new hobby, or just a new afternoon adventure, or a completely new vocation. Without further ado, let me get to the questions that are already in my mailbag. This episode, we discuss… [11:40] How do I create a color scheme when designing for people afraid of color? Part 2 of 3. In this episode, I read the middle portion of an essay I have written, which could become a chapter in a future publication. (Read in three parts.)Abstract:This essay charts how the term harmony came to be used by European and North American artists, designers, and educators as a qualitative descriptor of color usage and design. Originating in metaphysics and philosophy in BCE Greece as a method to link the functioning of the five senses, including color vision, the concept entered into the vernacular of design via architecture during the Italian Renaissance. Throughout the 19th and early 20th Centuries, theorists and educators claimed the authority to define objective harmonies in color usage and design; forming methodologies that have been ubiquitous in practice over the past 100 years. The final section of the essay, A New Canon, places the work of color theorists, Mary Gartside and Emily Noyes Vanderpoel in historical context so as to examine how their inclusion (and by extension, additional underrepresented color theorists and practitioners) may help us to understand how we may expand our contemporary approaches to color usage in all creative visual fields.
In this little episode, I talk a bit about creating a good color scheme using complimentary colors. I also have a surprise for you! This week's episode is the first half of my conversation with visual artist Kimmy Quillin. We spoke for nearly three hours over Zoom, her from her home in Brooklyn and me here in LA. We begin by talking about mornings, her coffee routines and how being heliotropic, time of day, and color inform her painting. How both her Wisconsin roots and her love of New York City, the city she's lived in for over a decade inform her work and personality. She talks about working in different mediums, the realties of living as an artist, our mutual love of Craigslist, highs and lows of releasing art and how she takes care of herself throughout it all. She's one of my favorite painters whose work can be seen on the walls of Good Move in Brooklyn (whose founder, Jules, has been on the podcast twice) as well as in Elle, Domino Magazine, and at Uprise Art. She presented her solo show Many Moons at Chinatown Soup in November 2019 (I was there) and at Spite Haus in January 2020. We met before I left NYC and share a bunch of mutual friends whom I polled for questions to ask her at the end of part two. In part two we talk more about her process—how she creates conditions for creativity, incorporating chance in her work, what she calls intentional chaos—and much more. Our last episode was about the #checkthebox mentality… if you haven't listened to it go do that, it will help you make sense of what this one is about. Your health… mental, physical, emotional… all of it is impacted by your choices. Your choices… the decisions that you make, through my lens are black and white… you either do it or you don't. Like Mr. Miyagi says in the Karate Kid… “do karate yes… okay… do karate no… okay… do karate i guess so… sooner or later get squish like grape… You can choose to hit snooze and go back to sleep… or you can choose to get your ass up and go move… You can choose to hit the bar after work, or you can choose to move. None of this is new information, but it is pretty black and white from my perspective.
Choosing colors for one room is tricky enough - but what do you do when it comes to choosing a color scheme for your entire freakin' home? Interior designer Lesley Myrick has tips on how to find the perfect white, light neutral, bold color, and complementary color to develop a kickass color palette.

Moving across the country can be stressful...and exciting! Top that with a move within weeks of a busy holiday season and you can amplify the stress and excitement by two! That's what is happening with listener Melinda, who is moving into a beautiful home with gray painted walls and brown carpeting. She asks what color scheme she should keep in mind as she tries to navigate decorating her new home with a gray and brown foundation. This question is a familiar one as many of us transitioned out of the beige trend into gray and didn't have a budget big enough to accommodate new flooring as well. In this episode I'm able to answer Melinda's question and more because she sent photos along with her question. Not only am I able to answer the question about marrying brown and gray, but I'm able to specifically address a few other elements within her room that could be outliers and need addressing in order to create a cohesive home environment as she settles into her new home with her family. Brand loyalty has become an extreme factor in consumer behavior, which means that brands need to be memorable to be competitive. This directly correlates to a brand’s website and website colors. The color scheme of your website needs to be attention-grabbing enough to keep viewers interested, but also align appropriately with the brand image and personality. Hot Tip #22 is to consider a color scheme. A carefully crafted Landing Page color scheme stands out and takes effort. An effort your visitor will assume carries over to your event, product, or service.

Hey, this is Clay. Welcome to another episode of The Nomics Update. Today I'm going to talk about color capitulation. So for some time now, we've really been proud of our branding. When we first started, we hired a fancy branding agency, and they're called Fuzzco. They've worked with MailChimp and other folks, pretty fancy team, and we developed this dynamic brand together, [00:00:30] and the way the brand works, I'm sure you've seen on the website, is that the colors change on the website based on the state of the market. So if the market's way down, the accent color across our homepage is red. If it's way up, then it's green, but when you traverse the spectrum from -2 percent down to +2 [00:01:00] percent up or greater, you are traversing this color continuum from red to green or from green to red. So if the market's in the middle, if there's virtually no change on a given day, then essentially, the website is purple, because that's roughly the middle point between red and green. So a lot of people don't like purple. It's kind of weird, it's becoming a more trendy [00:01:30] startup color, but the main thing that the people don't like is seeing a bunch of currencies in purple. People tend to really like these binary signals. So if it's up, even if it's up by only .01 percent, they want it green, and if it's down, even if it's down by .05 percent, they want it red. So I fought this for a while. I thought our branding scheme was cool. But [00:02:00] over and over again, I heard people say like, "Why is it when I change from the month view to the year view, the color scheme changes?" Well, the reason why the color scheme changes when you go from the month view to, let's say, a year view is because the market's up over the last year. Well, it was as of a few days ago. But the market's down if you take the month view. [00:02:30] Oh no, it's actually up six percent. Anyway, all kinds of people telling us they didn't like the colors. And the thing about a good product company, I think, is that you just don't fight with your customers. If you hear something enough, you just have to do it. So we're capitulating, we thought we were so smart and so clever with this design, but we're not. [00:03:00] We're not smarter than you, we're not smarter than our customers. So we are going to essentially make everything either green or red, which essentially means we're just tightening the band. So basically, the color spectrum from red to green is going to dynamically update from .2., from .2.5 [00:03:30] percent to point, I'm sorry, from .2.5, my God, I can't say this right. From .25 percent to -.25 percent, it's gonna traverse. So anyway, almost everything is going to be basic red or green. And if we have to tighten that color, that band as well, we will, and then almost everything will be red and green, which will be kind of sad, but we'll understand. [00:04:00] Anyway, thanks to everyone who so passionately argued for this. Eric Meltzer hated our colors for a while there. Ben Davenport, ex-CTO of BitGo and founder of that company and a really cool guy, someone who we like to learn from, sent in this feedback as well. And then just a whole slew of other people I won't name drop here, but [00:04:30] suffice to say, we heard the message loud and clear. We're going to do it. You hate the colors. Okay. Thanks for the feedback. Bye. I’ve been talking about finding a Color Scheme for your Home. My first suggestion was a field trip to the Art Gallery. Today I suggest a shorter trip...a way to find a Color Scheme in your own Home.
I discuss how you can use the colors in a painting to create a Color Scheme and then...how to use that Color Scheme in a Family Room.

When your business category is dominated by a single brand and all the other brands put together don't equal them, it's time to create a counter-brand. Counter-branding – business judo – is rare and dangerous. But when you're overwhelmingly dominated, what have you got to lose? Prior to the creation of their “Uncola” counter-brand in 1967, 7-Up had survived for 38 years as a lemon-lime soft drink with the slogan, “You Like It. It Likes You.” Yippee Skippy call the press, a soft drink likes me. As in Judo, the secret of counter-branding is to use the weight and momentum of your opponent to your own advantage. In other words, hook your trailer to their truck and let them pull you along in their wake. The steps in counter-branding are these: 1. List the attributes of the master brand. In the case of 7-Up, the master brand was “Cola: sweet, rich, brown.” Everything else was either a fruit flavor or root beer and all of those put together were relatively insignificant. “Cola” overwhelming dominated the mental category “soft drinks.” 2. Create a brand with precisely the opposite attributes. To accomplish this, 7-Up lost their lemon-lime description and became “The Uncola: tart, crisp, clear.” 3. Without using the brand name of your competitor, refer to yourself as the direct opposite of the master brand. 7-Up didn't become UnCoke or UnPepsi as that would have been illegal, a violation of the Lanham Act. But when you're up against an overwhelming competitor, you don't need to name them. Everyone knows who they are. Let's look at a current example: Starbucks. Notice how I didn't have to name the category? All I had to say was “Starbucks” and you knew we were talking about coffee. That's category dominance. In the February 2005 issue of QSR magazine, Marilyn Odesser-Torpey writes about Coffee Wars, opening with the question, “Starbucks will certainly remain top dog among coffee purveyors, but who is next in line?” A little later we read, “Many of the competitors in the coffee segment are Starbucks look-alikes; if you take the store's signage down, it would be hard to tell the difference.” Traditional wisdom tells us to (1.) study the leader, (2.) figure out what they're doing right, (3.) try to beat them at their own game. This strategy can actually work when the leader hasn't yet progressed beyond the formative stages, but when overwhelming dominance has been achieved, as is currently the case with Starbucks, such mimicry is the recipe for disaster. Are all competitive coffee houses forever doomed to occupy the sad “me-too” position in the shadow of mighty Starbucks? Yes, until one of them launches a counter-brand. To determine what a Starbucks counter-brand would look like, we must first break Starbucks down into its basic brand elements: 1. Atmosphere: quiet and serene, a retreat, a vacation, like visiting the library. Bring your laptop and stay awhile. They've got wi-fi. 2. Color Scheme: muted, romantic colors. Every tone has black added. 3. Auditory Signature: music of the rainforest, soft and melodious 4. Lighting: subdued and shadowy, perfect for candles or a fireplace. 5. Pace: slow and relaxed. This is going to take awhile, but that's part of why you're here. 6. Names: distinctly foreign and sophisticated. Sizes include 'Grande' and 'Venti.' (No matter how you pronounce these, the 'barista' will correct you. It's part of the whole Starbucks wine-bar-without-the-alcohol experience.) Counter-brands succeed by becoming the Yin to the master brand's Yang, the North to their South, the equal-but-opposite 'other' that neatly occupies the empty spot that had previously been in the customer's mind. Here's what a Starbuck's counter-brand would look like: 1. Atmosphere: energetic and enthusiastic. Running shoes instead of bedroom slippers. Leave the car running because we won't be here long. 2. Color Scheme: bright, primary colors such as are...
