He served as president and editor-in-chief of Congressional Quarterly, the editor of The National Interest, and the editor of The American Conservative, and he covered Washington as a reporter for the WSJ for more than a decade. He has written many history books, including the one we're discussing this week: President McKinley: Architect of the American Century. It's a lively read, a fascinating glimpse of fin-de-siècle American politics, and of a GOP firmer on tariffs — but a hell of a lot more virtuous than it is under Trump today. For two clips of our convo — on McKinley's heroism during the Civil War, and the reasons he differs so much from Trump — head to our YouTube page.Other topics: Robert's journalist dad and his conservative influence; his own career as a journo; McKinley's roots in Ohio; his abolitionist parents; his mentor Rutherford B Hayes; his time in Congress; the economic depression of the 1890s; the debate over the gold standard; McKinley's “front-porch strategy” besting the great populist orator William Jennings Bryan; his underrated presidency; his modesty and “commanding quiet”; his incremental pragmatism — in the spirit of Oakeshott's “trimmer”; ushering in American empire; the Spanish-American War; the sinking of the Maine; taking over the Philippines; annexing Hawaii; leaving Cuba to the Cubans; the Panama Canal; McKinley's strong support of tariffs; his later pivot towards reciprocity in trade; his lackluster record on race relations; his assassination by an anarchist; Teddy taking over; his bombast contrasting with his predecessor; trust-busting; McKinley's remarkable marriage; his wife's epilepsy; HW Bush; and if a McKinley type of conservative could succeed in today's GOP.Browse the Dishcast archive for an episode you might enjoy (the first 102 are free in their entirety — subscribe to get everything else). I have to say that I was a little nervous initially when I thought of sitting down with Robert Thomas Mullen. He has a list of artistic accomplishments that would make many of us feel a bit “impostery” as artists. However, it didn't take long for me to relax into our conversation and see that Robert, though extremely talented, had times when he doubted his own work, felt blocked, and experienced many of the same things we all feel but often keep to ourselves. He was honest, introspective, and humble, and I liked him immediately.Robert shares that having a full-time job helps him be a better artist allowing him the freedom to make for himself first. He talks about his amazing collection of brooches acquired over the years from other jewelry artists, the importance of fostering strong connections within the jewelry community, and his life long passion for collecting interesting objects from nature that one day may find their way into his work.Follow Robert:Instagram: @robertthomasmullenWebsite: robertthomasmullen.comRobert's Brooch Collection on Instagram: @my_brooch_collectionLove the Podcast?Support an episode: Click here to learn more!Without your support I couldn't continue the Slowmade Podcast. As humans, we sometimes see changing directions with our business, our art, our studies a step back. What if instead, we saw it as a natural pivot as we learn and grow and pursue our passions. We are excited to introduce you to Rachel Marie Kang. Rachel is the author of Let There Be Art: The Pleasure and Purpose of Unleashing the Creativity within You, which releases October 11th. Robert had the pleasure of talking with her about the book, the creative process and how we can participate in art, whether we consider ourselves artists, creatives, writers, or even none of those things. This book is a wonderful addition to your fall reading. It will draw you closer to God, while also giving you permission to participate in beauty and in creation in new ways. Rachel is a New York native, born and raised just outside New York City. She is a writer of poems, prose, and other pieces, and she is the founder of Fallow Ink. A mixed woman of African American, Native American (Ramapough Lenape Nation), Irish, and Dutch descent, she is a graduate of Nyack College with a Bachelor of Arts in English with Creative Writing and a minor in Bible. Her writing has been featured by Christianity Today, Charlotte Magazine, and (in)courage. Rachel lives and writes just outside Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband and two children. In today's episode we conclude our discussion of the Art House Dallas Origin series "On Patience". This is our final discussion on the Art House Dallas Origin series "On Patience". This week we talk about process, efficiency and how God is not nearly as concerned with efficiency as he is with our growth. What part does process play in our growth? And can we learn to enjoy the process of life instead of trying to bypass it in order to get to the conclusion of a goal? Welcome back from our vacation. We ended up taking a little extra time off around our vacation, but we're glad to be back for this episode as we talk about blending social circles in order to live a more congruent and integrated life. Between starting an art business, being involved in several different organizations, working at a church and having friends from outside those areas it can be hard to feel like you have many friends that are truly integrated into your whole life. That's our dreams, and what we talk about during most of this episode. This lesson is for the week of May 16-22, with Robert Miller as co-host.Brought to you by http://www.cedarfort.comRobert has been a full-time seminary teacher for the last 27 years. he has also taught institute, adult religion, and BYU-Idaho online classes. He received a Ph.D. in 2001 in Instructional Psychology and Technology. He is the author of the Isaiah a Prophet's Prophet series. Lynda Cherry has been a devoted student of the Bible and the scriptures from a very young age. As a nine year-old, she was captivated by the story of Moses and the covenant people at Mt. Sinai. Later, she learned from several rabbinical sources that that event was often viewed as a betrothal of God to His people. The many self-descriptions of Jehovah as a Husband to His people intrigued her, and she has spent a lifetime studying, compiling, and integrating various sources, including prophecies and symbolism throughout the scriptures, ancient temple rituals, and the Israelite holy days to reveal “God's love story” in its full beauty and depth. The beautiful allegory of the Redemption of the Bride tells the story of the House of Israel: her covenant betrothal to Jehovah, her adulterous apostasy from that covenant, and her restoration through His tender mercies and compassion upon her.Members of the church believe in the Bible and the Book of Mormon. The book of Mormon is another testament to Jesus Christ and chronicles the history of Jesus visiting the Natives in North America in ancient times. The book of Mormon was translated with priesthood power by Joseph Smith Jr. who was martyred as the prophet of the Church in 1844. The Church has grown to 16.6 million members worldwide, who love Jesus Christ and his restored gospel. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We are very excited to be speaking with Rebecca's Artisan Business Coach, Lara Cornell this week. We first met Lara through another artist and Rebecca worked through her book Maker's Mark. Just shortly after that is when Rebecca met with her personally, and ended up signing up for her 10 week coaching program. I (Robert) get a chance to dig more into who Lara is as both an artist and a coach, and how she has come to offer the services she does, which combine the art of business with the creative mindset to help you become an #ArtisanCEO. We are really happy to be introducing you to Corella Roberts today. I (Robert) got to know of her through hope*writers. She's an author, blogger, teacher, mom and missionary. Today, we talk about her book which was released last year, her writing journey and of course, faith. It's an encouraging story about how God can and does use unlikely, uncertain circumstances to grow you and shape you into who he wants you to be.Born and raised in northern Idaho, Corella's love for books and writing developed at an early age as her imagination was her only playmate for miles. After high school, she ventured off to St. Paul, MN where she earned a degree from University of Northwestern and first heard the call to be a missionary teacher. She married her high school sweetheart, Troy Roberts, and they moved to teach in a village of about fifty people in bush Alaska. After seven years, during which time they almost gave up on missions entirely, God saw fit to rekindle their desire to teach in unreached parts of the world, and they moved to Chiang Rai, Thailand. They have two spunky children who love cats and hamsters, they eat cheap Thai food to their hearts' content, and they support the amazing community of missionaries there through teaching and organizing community events. Recently, God has invited Corella to return to her passion for writing, and she published a book, Colliding with the Call, about the literal and spiritual wilderness she experienced in Alaska, and the surprise of finding God's fingerprints all over that part of her story.Find Corella Roberts writing content at:https://linktr.ee/corella.robertsYou can find Corella on social at:https://www.facebook.com/corellaroberts/https://www.instagram.com/corella.roberts/List of resources mentioned in episode, suggested reading & social media handles:The Lazy Genius - Holiday DocketHope*Writers - https://www.hopewriters.com/Colliding with the Call - On AmazonFollow Coffee Time Conversations, or Robert or Rebecca on Social Media: InstagramCoffee Time Conversations - https://www.instagram.com/coffeetime.conversationsRebecca - https://www.instagram.com/prince_beckRobert - https://www.instagram.com/robertprinceFacebookhttps://www.facebook.com/coffeetimeconversationsWebsitesCoffee Time Conversations - https://www.coffeetimeconversations.comRobert's Writing - https://recognizingthedivine.com

With Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, and Winona Ryder, this is a fun film that is parts funny, parts horror, and parts bizarre. It's showtime! We'll be back next year with a movie suggested to us by several YouTube commenters as our friend, Jared Wall joins us to do “Sardar Udham” which is a real-life revenge story about atrocities by the British Empire in India.Show notes: http://www.actualanarchy.com/259Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.comRobert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We invite the Profe$$ional A$$hole to discuss the Shining sequel, impressively of both the book and the movie versions, in 2019's "Doctor Sleep".Danny Torrance is all grownz up and still haunted by the events at the Overlook Hotel that happened when he was a child. He drinks to hide the pain and dull his shine, following his father's footsteps. He gains the resolve to right himself and encounters a gifted young girl who “shines” brightly to attract psychic vampires who want to hunt her down so he must help save her and finally rid the world of the Overlook. This is a fun discussion where our guest dons the satiric persona of Alec Jones, an imaginary half-brother to the famous “conspiracy theorist” who turns out to be right...just early in many cases. We will return next week with another horror film, John Carpenter's “Prince of Darkness” with the great Prof CJ of the Dangerous History Podcast.Show notes: http://www.actualanarchy.com/257Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.comRobert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. A bit of a somber occasion as a remembrance of the great Norm MacDonald who passed away recently with a review of a brilliant film, "Dirty Work" with the wonderful Raylene Lightheart.Dirty Work is a 1998 American comedy film starring Norm Macdonald, Artie Lange, Jack Warden, and Traylor Howard and directed by Bob Saget. It flopped at the box office, but has since gained a cult following. While not a great film this will be more of a celebration of Norm and his body of work from calling out the Clintons on the View, his Conan appearances, and of course the original fake news on Weekend Update where he went after OJ hard and told us how murder was now legal in California. IF there is one thing that is certain, married couples who own a business have more stress to work through in their marriage than couples who do not. IT doesn't matter if both couples work in the business or not. When you own a business in your marriage IT impacts your marriage. Marriage is work and we have addressed that many times on iWork4Him. If your marriage is struggling so does all of your life tend to be a struggle. If your marriage is a mess, it impacts everything you do & say. We as Jesus followers are supposed to be working on our marriages because they are to be a witness to our pre-believer friends all around us. Our marriages are to be a light. So how do we deal with the tension in our marriages caused by a business. Here to help us parse through the conversation is Robert and Kay Lee Fukui. They run a biznistry called PowerCouplesByDesign.comRobert and Kay Lee Fukui have a lot in common with Jim and Martha Brangenberg. You've probably heard Jim and Martha talk about how work and marriage really affect each other and if one is stressed then it's all affected. We can't just leave our marriage stress at the door when we come to work, especially if we work together. Robert and Kay Lee developed their business out of necessity after seeing the struggle with work becoming the mistress in their homes growing up. They decided to take the 2 year premarriage tools they learned and use them to help business owners strengthen their own marriages and build successful businesses. What a fun chat this was to talk about marriage and business and how they can thrive, survive, or die. One of the most typical struggles this couples has dealt with is that couples work too hard and don't have great conflict resolution skills. Learning how to leave work and resolve conflict can be keys to a thriving marriage and prosperous business. Rachel Kennerly of Just Add Liberty and Cannabis Heals Me returns to the stone-age with us to discuss “The Croods” in what may be a glimpse of civilization's future if we continue on the current trajectory. An eccentric cave family named the Croods – consisting of Grug, Eep, Ugga, Thunk, Sandy, and Gran – survive several natural disasters, predatory animals and the common cold by sheltering inside a dark cave, merely surviving. Is such a life worth living? Eep is dissatisfied with the over-protective nature of her father Grug “protecting” her from everything. She'd rather a dangerous liberty than a temporarily calm “safety”.Rachel is a lot of fun and we will have a great time discussing this with her.Join us next week as the great, Pete Quinones returns for only his second non-Kevin Costner movie and we delve into some vintage James Woods and talk about “Salvador” directed by Oliver Stone.Show notes: http://www.actualanarchy.com/249Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.comRobert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. A road movie and coming-of-age tale, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is consistently clever and even moving according to Roger Ebert's website. This is a suggestion by my long-lost co-host Robert, so I am sure he will have plenty to say on this one.Join us next week for the return of Johnny Profita of Peddling Fiction as we get into the summer film, Point Break.Show notes: http://www.actualanarchy.com/244Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.comRobert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. Inventory challenges continue to make headlines, but has the used car market shifted? "By the time you've ready about it in the Wall Street Journal, it's already too late." - The Wolf of Wall StreetFrom Robert Hollenshead's perspective, the market is softening, and cars aren't selling like they were 3-5-8 weeks ago. Inventory predictions for the latter half of 2021 have shifted after Ford receives a new batch of chips and prepares to ship thousands of F-series pickups.Buying inventory? The market is hot for creampuffs... always was, always will be. But what about the others? There is plenty of opportunity to pinch deals as sellers start to lower reserves hoping to fuel activity and sell more inventory! The VIN-dow Podcast is brought to you by Accu-Trade. This week we asked Bob, "What's happening in the market and what should dealers keep in mind when using market reports right now?"His answer... "Right now, market reports could be the worst thing you could refer to.... the market report is your enemy." Keep in mind:1. Expectations are not being met in the lanes. Sellers are not getting the money they were hoping to get and are no longer selling at 90%. We're seeing the average seller back selling around 40-50%.2. Market reports can't report no sales. Market reports report what sells. When people aren't selling, the report can't adjust to the market. Anyone relying on market reports to buy, continue to buy at prices that are not relevant to the market. Market reports are your enemy because they can't adjust until people start selling to the market. Until then... relying on them could get you into trouble! DC Glenn is half of Tag Team, the hip hop act that scored an enormous hit in 1992 with “WHOOMP! There It Is”. He started writing hip hop songs in the early 1990s. While DJ-ing in several clubs in Atlanta, he played Tag Team's new song “WHOOMP! There It Is” and it got an enormous reaction. The song has an upbeat, positive message and became a dance favorite. WHOOMP subsequently was featured in a number of movies. Recently, the song and Tag Team were featured in a national commercial for GEICO in which the song was renamed “SCOOP! There It Is”. DC talks about the history of this song and hip hop in general, and how the GEICO commercial came to be and launched the song into orbit once again. Robert's featured song in this episode is “Python” from the album PGS 7 by Robert's band, Project Grand Slam. Robert chose this song because, although it's not hip hop, it's a totally funky ‘kissin' cousin' to a song like WHOOMP. In this week's VIN-dow podcast, Robert shares where wholesale profits are made and why wholesale is no longer a "dirty" word. The most successful publicly traded companies are not looking to break even wholesale. Check out their financial statements online. Where you find "wholesale", you will find profits. Carvana and Carmax are doing it!Three rules to follow to make a wholesale profit: 1) Buy right to sell right. Make profit when you acquire, not when you sell. Avoid getting welded into trades by having a measurable, repeatable process in place to trade frequently, and at an advantageous price. When you offer what a car is really worth based on its condition, desirability, and history, you avoid getting welded into the trade. 2) Ask too little, and get too much. Understand the piranha effect. Carvana strategically asks too little for cars inducing the "piranha effect". By doing this they convert 99% of the time and avoid bidder fatigue (ie: bidding on cars but experiencing IF bids over, and over, and over again)3) Acquire challenged cars that you have no interest in retailing. Leverage your service lane. The best opportunity in your dealership? The easiest cars to acquire are the challenged vehicles sitting on your lot. Direct upload the daily RO's into Accu-Trade and have someone printing out live offers on every trade coming through service. You won't go to hell if you make a wholesale profit! In this week's VIN-Dow podcast Bob explores “Cheap” cars. It's a discussion worth listening to as we and automotive dealerships navigate the hyper-market we are currently in.Listen in as Bob defines:Those “cheap” cars that may seem cheap based on the market information at your disposal, but become very expensive when you can't sell them. And the actual “cheap” cars, that have the “double-take factor” for your clientele that move the metal. The VIN-dow Podcast is brought to you by Accu-Trade. We can upload any spreadsheet into Accu-trade for an instant condition report and offer for every trade running through your shop. The transparency that is brought to the reality of every VIN has never been revealed before. "Every vehicle going through the shop is an opportunity. Your bank account doesn't understand if it was a retail or a wholesale opportunity. " - Robert HollensheadDealers can then use ACV, Backlot Cars, or their own auction Marketplace through Accu-trade if they were so inclined. You can upload any spreadsheet to your Service Lane to automatically decode the true merits of the VIN. Your service lane is an immediate opportunity for you to acquire and market vehicles. Can your sales person justify why they need more $ for their customers trade? Not including your service department in vehicle acquisition is like eliminating a whole department at your dealership. "Uncertainty causes wars. Lack of communication, and uncertainty." "The rainbow of different needs of all categories of dealers it dictates that there has to be a common sensical, universal, agnostic set of solutions that let people have the capability of communicating with buyers and sellers, wholesale and retail." - Robert Hollenshead. Bob has built a suite of solutions that do just that: www.accu-trade.com Bob discusses how Carvana is selling partner inventory direct from dealers lots. They're doing the advertising and the source is happy to sell them this way. Carvana essentially becomes Amazon in this case. Carvana is agnostically listing cars that fit in a category with no cost of carrying the inventory. It no longer matters where the vehicle is located. The closest dealer facilitates the delivery. ie: more efficient distribution and a better consumer experience. Any OEM can be doing this right now. It's worked out for Amazon. The industry is going to have to create the logistical infrastructure necessary for dealers to sell inventory direct like Amazon. Truth is... there is no Amazon Prime for moving your inventory in 2021. But there are tools that can enable your dealership to do just that. For yourself, your dealer group, your OEM: https://accu-trade.com/ Need to build a logistic infrastructure for your dealership? Target Retail aka: consumer selection. A number that is based on the characteristics of the VIN, mileage, equipment, colour, condition, history, keys, service history, etc in the retail market. Target Trade, aka: adverse selection, or STRIV: Short Term Residual Insurance Value, an underwritten number that dealers can base a trade value on. Target Auction, aka: conscious selection. This value is what you would anticipate the vehicle bringing in an auction marketplace if the best end user was present. By adding a data-driven process you can trade cars without FEAR or uncertainty. You make money when you acquire vehicles, not when you sell them. By acquiring vehicles based on their VIN-specific characteristics, you're able to avoid welding yourself into cars that you can't retail or wholesale your way out of. 5:50 The hum-line or insurance number (target trade) gives the dealer confidence to call the car, then find the best end user. Does your appraisal process include an OBD reader for decoding the truth about each VIN? Know the status of the VIN before you acquire the vehicle to ensure profitability on every trade. 8:00 What process will allow you to mitigate the risk of losing a customer? 8:30 Target Retail based on the VIN-specific characteristics, mileage, equipment, colour, condition, history, keys, service history, etc in the retail market. Are you going to certify the car? That will bump up the relevant retail ask. It's not based on what your neighbour has going on, it's based on what you'd have to pay to replace that vehicle in it's current condition. 10:50 Who is the best end user? Bob shares a story of one of his friends that just took in an S-Class Mercedes at their Toyota dealership. It's competitively priced but the dealer can't sell the car. Problem # 1) He's in Florida and the car has no AC. Problem #2) He's only got one of them. What does this reveal? He is not the best end user. The theory that everybody is the best retail dealer for every car is simply not true. There is typically a better end user. 19:50 Be careful when you're buying. Some cars are colour sensitive, equipment sensitive, history sensitive. You need you to input these data points. It's not sustainable to buy trades without fully understanding the VIN-specific characteristics. The auction reveals a better end user that is willing to overlook certain items and pay the ultimate amount of money for that vehicle. Do you want to pay the ultimate amount of money before presenting the consumer with the condition of their vehicle to rationally understand where your offer is coming from?Like what you hear? You can't change something. In a retail market, there is the possibility of a higher price by adding warranty, better location, etc. Dealers can't hide vehicle characteristics. Can you rationally communicate to the consumer why their vehicle is worth what it is? Once you can, they won't argue... they have two eyeballs as well. How did dealers think about wholesale profit 40 years ago and what has changed since then? What if there was a process to help the consumer understand where their trade in value was coming from? New car dealers don't look at every car as an opportunity to make a profit. If it doesn't fit their retail makeup, they often assume that the vehicle is going to be a loss. That doesn't have to be the case if you have a process in place to protect your profits. 6:15 The most successful companies are not looking to break even wholesale, they recognize that there is a wholesale opportunity on every VIN. If there is no rationality in your trade-in process, it's hard to manage your trades and avoid welding yourself into a trade. By adding a process, everyone will be able to justify the value of the trade. ie: your customer can understand, the dealer can understand and the sales person can understand. With a process, you set the dealership up to succeed by taking in trades at what they're worth without the fear of losing the deal. With a process that clearly justifies value, nobody can argue that the car isn't blue... when the car is blue. With a process, you can make wholesale profit. Why wouldn't you consider this opportunity? The opportunity to trade a car for what it's worth rather than out of fear. 10:30 The theory of not making any money wholesale, is crazy! Why would any stakeholder be ok with not trying to make a profit in every silo they can at the dealership? 12:07 "If you ask too little, you get too much." The piranha effect is on. Carvana puts a little blood in the water every weekend, log in on Sunday and see for yourself. 13:40 You'll never see Carmax run a car off the money, that's why they convert 99% of the time. This ensures that the buyers never experience bidder fatigue. 14:20 Will you go to hell if you make a wholesale profit? 16:10 You make profit when you acquire, not when you sell. There is an opportunity to create a wholesale profit on every VIN that you acquire by adding a process at your dealership. The best opportunities are right under your nose... Do you have a service lane acquisition strategy?18:04 The best opportunities for wholesale profits are in mileage or condition challenged car that is sitting in your service department. 19:50 Reveal the facts and you can have a profitable wholesale department at your dealership based on transparency, not ignorance. 23:00 Are you going to ask too much or too little for a car on the block? If RHAS is capable of turning mega profits year over year, so are you! 25:12 Dealerships that leverage the process without fear of making wholesale profit will come out ahead. Next week ...
