How do you treat those you see getting ahead- in career, finances, etc. Do you cheer them on or try to bring them down? Written by Chris Benjamin
When people try to expand and grow in their own lives, it can make others uncomfortable or even jealous. This can lead to lack of support, judgment and people tearing you down to build themselves up and keep you in the same stuck place that they are in.In this Episode Deirdre and Renee take a look at "crab mentality", and how to break free from it to design your best life.
When a crab in a bucket tries to escape, other crabs instinctively try to drag it back down. All the crabs can easily escape from the bucket, but instead, they grab and pull down each other in a competitive manner, preventing any of them from escaping. The motto associated with this mentality is, “if I can't have it, neither can you”. Signs of Crab Mentality Immediately offering unwanted criticism/negative comments after someone is successful Inability to offer praise or congratulations in response to someone else's success Lack of compassion when others are struggling Feeling threatened when others are growing and achieving their goals Gossiping about someone's mistakes or failures to others Feelings of envy or hostility, wishing ill will on others Why do crabs hold each other back? Psychology today says, Crabs did not evolve in buckets. They evolved on seashores, where clinging to others promoted survival. A crab is not consciously trying to hold back its mates. It is not consciously trying to save them either. It is just repeating a behavior that was naturally selected for. But what happens when this point of view is reflective of the one that makes it ? Why does the motto generally become a “there can only be one” instead of “all of us can help each other come up together?” When one of us becomes successful? Why Successful People Leave Their Loser Friends Behind 1. Unsuccessful Friends Make it Impossible to reach your True Potential According to Sandy Nyugen, on crab mentality, We need to learn to work together and uplift each other because, truthfully, there is enough room for all of us to be successful. Crab mentality in our families and societies falsely convinces us that there are not enough resources (money, jobs, happiness, love, etc.). Letting go of the crab mentality also makes us more humble and helps us handle our losses and mistakes better. We have to learn to eliminate these toxic traits by practicing a growth mindset, appreciating our own strengths, and recognizing that others have strengths too. On the other hand, friends who question you every decision and have no desire to improve themselves, will always drag you down, making you feel worthless. Studies have proven that our personalities are primarily determined by the nature of our relationship to other people. 2. 2. Unsuccessful Friends Make You Feel a Lack of Purpose Another reason why successful people tend to dismiss adverse parties is because such an entourage can negatively impact their way of feeling about themselves. Moreover, people blighted by dramas, lack of commitment and ubiquitous comfort, will most likely try to drag down all the people around them who have ideas, visions and energy to do great things. On the other hand, hard-working & ambitious people can help you regain emotional balance and a sense of purpose. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/creative-habits/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/creative-habits/support

The famous philosopher Taylor Swift in her song, "Shake it Off," made the profound statement, "haters gonna hate, hate, hate." She was not wrong. The phenomenon, known as CRAB MENTALITY, where people react negatively, in terms of their thoughts, statements, or actions, to those who get ahead of them, even though there is no direct benefit to doing so is something everyone has to deal with at some point in their lives. The term crab mentality comes from observing crabs in a bucket, and all of them failing to escape the bucket because they kept pulling each other back the second one managed to get to the top of the bucket. Humans have the proclivity to do the same thing. This podcast discusses how to identify the very toxic crab mentality in others. Sadly, the problem often comes from those closest to you: friends, family, or loved ones. Let alone the negativity many endure from social media, co-workers, or the public at large. However, more importantly, this podcast discusses how to transcend the negative talk, actions, and limitations to achieve your best self.

I've mentioned how our differences have been but need not to be the cause of any conflict, but there are other things that can also use some attention within the same light of exposure. Some but not many people have spoken out about it before, but I think traffic is a perfect example of where you can see it and how it would take little effort to apply some meaningful differences. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/llpamessage4all/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/llpamessage4all/support

The Crab Mentality. A mindset that says "If I can't have it, neither can you". Do you ever see this in yourself or do you suffer from this in those around you? It is based in limiting beliefs and we need to eradicate from our mindset!

When a crab in a bucket tries to escape, other crabs instinctively try to drag it back down. This episode, we talk about how this is a mentality prevalent among Asian cultures — from being competitive with one another to thinking that “there can only be one” Asian in the room — whether at work or in social groups. We speak to Abby Albino and Mark Vallena, founders of Rise Tribe, a collective aiming to power the next Filipinx leaders, on how they're beating the narrative by supporting and making space for one another to thrive. From unpacking the toxic practice of “being the best model minority” to opening space up for those most disenfranchised, we hope this episode sheds light on how we can make space for one another. There are different kinds of mentality but the crab mentality is even crazy. You need to understand it and check yourself to be sure you aren't caught up in it.
This metaphor about crabs have been known for a long time. We use it to describe a persons way of thinking. It's a common habit amongst all Filipinos, but the truth is, crab mentality is almost everywhere in the whole world. Siguro guilty ka rin na minsan ka nang naging utak talangka. Feeling stuck or drug down by those around you? Even while teaching virtually, we can find ourselves surrounded by people who want to keep us where we are, in a perpetual state of burnout. In this episode, I get down and dirty about the “Crab Mentality” and explain how others around you could be keeping you from your true potential. I teach you how to evaluate your “Top 5” and provide you with strategies to bring people in your life who can, and will, build you up instead of tear you down.
If you've never heard of the "crab theory" or the "crab mentality" then this is an episode that you NEED to listen to. This concept is the reason that so many people just can't seem to get from where they are to where they want to go, and it doesn't really have too much to do with them. If you are that someone that is trying to get in shape, quit your job, or just pursue your dream, then the crabs are something that you need to be aware of.
Animalistic Behavior in people is evident when you think of crabs in a bucket and how this is similar to what many humans do when they see someone rising up to success and it's sad and maybe we should re-evaluate how we treat others including family friends and our own people --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chicano/message

Ever feel like the people in your life just don’t get you? Or like they’re trying, unconsciously or obviously, to keep you small? Ever hear about the “bucket of crabs mentality?” We humans get spooked when people in our life change - it upsets the energy dynamic, and makes us question their own choices… if we’re unaware and unwilling to talk about these things. See, when you rise up and make creative moves or take bold action, people in your life might get scared that things will change for them… (or they get a big jealous that they’re not taking action on their own dreams.) Most people don’t have the personal awareness to see their Crab Mentality. So people all around you might be unconsciously lashing out, reacting and trying to keep you small so their world doesn’t change One. Little. Bit. That’s why you’ve gotta trust your gut, name. You’ve gotta fiercely tune into your own knowing, your personal truth, and your own sense of self. AND, you’ve gotta surround yourself with people who are working on their own grand dreams who are going to cheer you on, not drag you down. When you’re an artist, healer-teacher, coach, doctor, or creative entrepreneur, you’re always striving to do something different. When you’re a high-achiever, you’re usually aiming to break barriers and create a new level of performance. Are you surrounded by people who will hold your hand while cheering you on? People who will tell you it’s ok to screw up - and to keep going? Every book, movie, painting, or important product you’ve ever loved or admired was created by someone with an idea that came out of the ether: YOUR creative ideas, business, or unique innovations may seem too risky to someone else, but YOUR gut knows. There’s something magic there. And it’s worthwhile to pursue it. Even if it doesn’t turn out exactly as we originally thought, we learn ourselves through the doing. And we might just make something better than we ever dreamed. This Friday, I’m leading a special training for your Creatrix soul, called:Grow Your Biz in 2019, Creatrix! In this compact episode, Sigi and Jezzie unpack the complexity of the social phenomenon in the Philippines known as the My Way Killings. They critique and discuss the New York Times' article "Sinatra Song Often Strikes Deadly Chord" by Normitisu Onishi and try to find their own answers to this not-well understood string of tragic events where some karaoke singers were needlessly shot singing Frank Sinitra's crooner classic, "My Way." Finally, Sigi and Jezzie make the case to check ourselves when we engage in the Filipino notion of having too much personal ambition, at the expense of the common good, otherwise known as kanya-kanya. Have you ever had a weird circumstance happen to you where you have wanted to go out there to chase your dreams but as soon as you make the commitment and you're excited to go and start building your future, the closest people to you start putting you down? All of a sudden that supportive, loving and caring friend has done a 180 degree turn and has begun to put you down and your parents are disagreeing with your actions... On this episode I discuss what is known as the crab mentality and why budding entrepreneurs get put down by the people closest to them.

This week, we respond to a letter from a listener who's been comparing herself to others and competing all her life: for fitness, intelligence, popularity, likes on Instagram, and even sobriety. Now, in her 40's, it's spilling over to her kids. So we uncover the phenomenon of crab mentality and how it plays out in our lives. How do we deal with this very human instinct to compare + compete? Is it always bad? Why do we do it, and is there any way to step off the hamster wheel? Music by Izzy DeVor
In an earlier podcast, 19 episodes ago, Obedience and Discipline, we looked at the valuable lessons we can learn from a Poodle. Today, we are doing to learn from crabs. Yes, crabs. A single crab in a bucket or cooking pot can easily escape. If there is more than one crab in the container, the other crabs won’t let him out; they will pull at his legs making it impossible to exit. And we humans often do the same thing. And we are acting like crabs, modeling crab mentality, with increasing frequency and mounting negative consequences. We are all familiar with the phrase that misery loves company. That’s frequently true, but there is more than just that going on here. If we have, for example, flunked a test, suffered a broken relationship or lost a job, there is a part of us that takes some comfort in not being the only one to suffer; not being the Lone Ranger. Misery can indeed love company. But crab mentality is far more complex. Crab mentality promotes failure, rewards it, and punishes success. The Resenting Success podcast will add to this part of the discussion. Specifically we have all seen the crab mentality reaction when someone from a group identified as oppressed supports successful people, and the concepts, e.g., personal responsibility, hard work and entrepreneurial capitalism that made those people successful. They are vilified, boycotted and accused of being traitors. By the way, traitors to what? Traitors to being unsuccessful? Are these people really being accused of turning their backs on the type of thinking that leads to failure and being accused of--yes, accused of --embracing thinking that leads to success. Yes, sadly, they are. Think about that; that is exactly--exactly--what is going on. In crab mentality thinking, no crab can be allowed to escape for fear that the other crabs will get ideas. What happened when Kanye West tried to leave the bucket? Or when it was discovered that a large number of women had voted Republican? He and they were scorned and criticised. And the disparaging comments were not based on facts and reasoning; they were focused on the inexcusable action of these people leaving the bucket. West, a black man, left the black, anti-Trump bucket. Boycott him. Women voting Republican were leaving the feminist, anti-Republican bucket. They must have been duped by the self-serving men in their lives. Ben Carson, is Yale and Michigan Medical School grad. This famed neurosurgeon pioneered the first successful neurosurgical procedure on a fetus inside the womb, performed the first completely successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins, and developed new methods to treat brain-stem tumors. He became the youngest chief of pediatric neurosurgery in the country at age 33. Today, he is the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development--HUD. But to those with crab mentality, Dr. Carlson, MD, who is black, is dismissed as an Uncle Tom for leaving the poor, black and fatherless at a young age bucket. On a broader scale, people trying to leave the dependency bucket are being aggressively pulled back by those with crab mentality. Victimhood is a tool used by the crab mentality crowd. “You can’t leave the bucket” they say, “Don’t you know that victims can’t leave?” Their fear, their dread, is that is some crabs leave and others will see it and want to do the same. And the crab mentality crowd can’t have that; its leaders are preaching the truth and finality of victimhood, the inescapability of poverty, the permanence of an early poor education so that they, the crab mentality leaders, can lead lives filled with attention, approval and financial substance. The very things they seek to deny those in the bucket. And the saddest of all, are the crabs in the bucket who buy into this lie and stay there. We are humans, not crabs. We can get out. And help others to do the same. In turn, those we help will help others. And if we love our fellow humans,

It's a dirty word to almost everyone. … But most are wrong about globalization. The left sees the exploitation of the world's poor. The right sees the exploitation of First World workers. The powers that be state their version of globalization involves political centralization and regulatory harmonization. There's probably some former Ron Paul supporters who think globalization is a bad thing that causes suffering, and I understand why they think so. I don't agree, and this way of thinking is just misguided. The Crab Mentality is when you put two crabs in a bucket, but when one of them tries to get out of the bucket, the other will pull it back even though the other crab could easily get out as well. It's a perfect example of "if I can't have it, neither can you." A prime example of this is when someone invents something that betters our life; some people think it only benefits the inventor because he earns the money from their invention. Because we have to pay for it, we don't benefit. Of course not, we all benefit from inventions such as automobiles, elevators, lights and even personal computers. I see the similar thinking with those in the financial markets. They think it's a zero sum game. If they win, there's a loser on the other side. However, the more that win and have the know-how on managing risk; the more participants there are in the marketplaces with generates more wealth. I know it's easy to become a skeptic, and you should be, but the world is still a good place, and they're people like me who want to continue to that. I know twelve others who aren't looking to keep you down either and can show you how to generate returns trading your money as they do.
